I realized mid-video that I forgot to include the clip that explains the method used for mounting the backdrops. My apologies.
I applied blue painters tape to the drywall then sandwiched double sided carpet tape between the blue tape and the backdrop. This holds the backdrops firmly in place but still give me the option to re-adjust if needed without destroying the drywall. This method has held the backdrops firmly in place and I'm very happy with the result.
Sounds like you have another video to make about how you installed them.
Haha. That's my wife that made the new logo. I think it came out great. She put a lot of hours into it... so many train details. I don't know how she can make sense of all those Illustrator layers. I gave her a little input as well, as she doesn't know much about the hobby. Well, not that I do either, but at least O-Gauge trains are near and dear to my heart.
I love the new logo! Thanks for connecting us. I'm super happy with it.
Good job on your backdrops and layout
Looks fantastic!!! At 75 years old and many layouts under my belt … I wish we had U-tube 50 years ago keep the videos coming watch them over and over!!!
the backdrops really bring everything up a notch
JD, I wish more guys would take my advice (which I explain in my CTT article) and practice patience. Guys get so excited and want to run their trains right away - then spend months regretting it. I see old guys my age doing it even today. The trains will come in good time, but the backdrop comes first. It takes discipline to postpone runnning your trains, but it's sound advice. Patience is key. The other tip I write about is coving the corners of the room. There are no 90 degree corners in nature, so your backdrop should curve around the visible corners of the layout - thus heightening the illusion of reality. You lose a small amount of layout space, but the effect is remarkable - especially in photos and video - if the backdrop is skillfully prepared.
I agree, putting up backdrops on my old Harpers Ferry layout was a pain. Its hard to be patient after years of waiting to run trains but it will be so much easier to do before my table tops and track are permanently attached.
Outstanding job on the backdrop especially knowing how difficult it is to blend! It looks flawless and natural and will make for some realistic photos!
Thanks Rich! And thank you so much for the tips/reminders while I was struggling through the process. I'm so happy with how it turned out.
Seeing that video of the 6 hookups of those Engines I am Speechless. You Are right Model Railroading is A Great way To Make Great new Friends.
I've got one of those trailer hitches on my Jeep. Funny thing is how it came with a safety notice on it that it wasn't to be used for hauling real railroad equipment. Folks see my Jeep and ask what type of trailer hitch it is, and then they laugh when they realize it's a train coupler. I tell folks that I just need to find an identical Jeep, put a coupler on it, and then I can have two A units back to back.
Layout will look good with those backdrops. Had a great time hanging out with you guys!
Thanks for having us!
Hi Jason, while dabbling in US 2R O scale amongst other prototypes and scales, I've followed you for a while now and, given time constraints, have managed to watch most of your clips over the last several years. I've been particularly interested with the progress you have made on your new layout and had to comment on the significant difference the backdrop has made to the layout's appearance. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.
Coming from a 2R O scale modeler, I greatly appreciate the compliment :)
Okay JD, just checking in on the progress on this very large layout you will have. Looking good. You are very fortunate getting to travel around to so many places and meet so many people. You are so right train collecting is not about how big your collection is, the size of your layout or anything else like that, it's about the friendships you make. My dad taught that to me way back in the early 1970's when he and I first got into trains. Your wife is an angel. Tell her someone out here in youtube land said so because she enjoys seeing the joy these trains bring to you. You guys seem like a great couple just from that tiny interaction on this video. Do the two of you work on this layout together? That would be great.
Shelby is still my girlfriend, for now ;) She typically doesn't help unless I've hit my breaking point with something and I ask for her assistance.
The backdrops are a great addition to your layout. As a photographer and videographer, a big part of my layout building is producing a layout that looks good in photos and videos. With an island layout the background was always a messy distraction, so I was pleased to be able to buy a roll of material for making banner signs. I cut of four sections which fit on each side of my layout, overlapping a bit at each corner. Then I painted them blue. I have begun to add some additional details, but that will be a long progress. Each section is hung on posts using hook and loop tape, so each section, or part of section, can be taken down for access to the layout, and for shooting ground level images and video. My backdrops also have the benefit of (mostly) keeping the cats off the layout. Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to more updates.
Thank you for the info Mark!
Awesome job on the back drop. The new AtlasO cars are very nice also. I picked up 5 so far. Glad you had a great time overseas.
Thanks David!
Incredible update Jason. You gotta love Norm's layout. He has inspired me to weather and then open up my weathering business.
He's the best !
Looking awesome I getting model tacoma rail I am really excited about it
Wow, Jason, the backdrops look awesome! I think you did a great job blending the backdrop with the blue paint. The backdrops really pull the railroad together nicely. I like the addition of the CONRAIL blue to your collection. What an opportunity to see all of those beautiful layouts. Thank you for the update. Very nice indeed! Bill B.
Thank you Bill! Appreciate your kind words.
@@JDStucks And don't forget the LIONEL 2233400 O CONRAIL #8408 - LEGACY SW-1 due out around December 2022! What modern railroad doesn't need at least one SW-1, lol. Bill B.
Backdrops look great!
Jason - you have more energy than a nuclear power plant. The backdrops look good but you are right - you have to include them first In the layout. The layout is a monster -keep it going.
Background looks super nice, and fits perfectly with rest of layout.. looking good! Definitely expands the view. On board for the premiere.
GREAT VIDEO JASON ... loving the progress ... anxious to see the scenery start to come together ... backdrops look fantastic ...
Thanks Bob! Scenery will start soon enough!
Very nice! Good to see U.P. 3985 in the video, the real 3985 went thru my hometown yesterday as part of the "hospital train" headed to Silvis IL! I was a bit under the weather, so I missed it...
The backdrops look great they really show how big your layout is.
As a fellow model railroader and Detroit native, I love people who enjoy model trains. BTW I work at a train store and I thoroughly enjoy the job
Looks great man!
Back drop looks like it goes there . You have a wonderful layout . Thank you for sharing, enjoyed watching!
Looks fantastic
Jason, don't fret. It looks great and 100% better than anythi g I have ever done. And I was just as happy with what I ended up with. I can't wait to see more of of yours.
Thanks John!
Great layout videos combining building techniques with running of the trains.
Great to connect with you again, Jason. You've been really busy over the last few months and I'm glad Shelby was there to help. The backdrops look sensational and add a lot depth to layout. The skyblue paints you chose really look seamless to complete the upper area above the backdrops, so that went well. Remember visiting Cedar Point when I was a kid.Great fun! Hope you still have time to enjoy the rest of the summer.
Thank you Tom! Always good to hear from you.
The backdrop looks beautiful excellent job. Soon as I get out of fun time with the boys. I'm from New Jersey good to see some blue Conrail all your other New pieces excellent additions enjoy hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July
I could have hosted you and your attractive assistant to The Best Fettuccine Alfredo anywhere mine, and a trip to Everwild Distillery in downtown Sandusky for some libation and wonderful dessert! We'll catch on you on your next trip. And wow what a great couple weeks you've had. Hope you can set something up again to meet you all at Stockyard Express! Have a great 4th of July!
Stay Safe and Well and God Bless America!!!
Thanks Joe! We'll do it again at Stockyard Express. Happy 4th!
Jason...The back drops are fantastic. They add more realism creativity and use of all that open space. I like your new Conrail Dash 8 engine. Thanks for sharing.
The backdrops are amazing. Makes me rethink maybe I should move my island layout against the wall. That seem would drive me nuts also. Not sure if there is a way to blend the scenery together? At least the mountain(s). But like you said . It will be eventually covered up. My favorite part about the video. Is your hitch plug from Bob. I got to find one for my truck hitch. That is awesome. Looks like a nice weekend with some friends. Thanks for sharing.
Now I need a truck for the hitch!
Jas.....WOW.....you made some nice videos.....But this one....Mannnnnn..!!! This is a "GREAT video......all of it....cooltrains running....NS rules.......👍👍👍👍👍
That steam on the roundabout is just flat out cool!!!
Man, that sky paint job is excellent !!!
Love seeing the progress updates Jason! Keep up the great work! To this day you're still the person that got me into wanting to make a layout for myself going back and watching the videos from when you started in your parent's basement. That layout is still my idol to this day lol.
Lance, that's awesome to hear! I'm glad my videos have inspired you for so long and I'm glad you enjoyed the old layout so much. Hopefully you're enjoying this one so far.
Good Morning ☀️ from California. Always fun to see an update on your beautiful layout. Sounds like your a very busy person. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us.
Thanks for tuning in from Cali!
Great job on the backdrop.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great to hear from you, Jason. New logo is awesome and the backdrops look terrific! Thanks for adding the tip in the Comments on the use of painter's tape to provide some flexibility should you need to adjust in future. Loved seeing N&W 611 on the turntable (which is working like a charm). Well done and thank you!
I felt so dumb for forgetting that clip. Glad you saw the comment.
One can see the trains very well without “landscaping” and scale buildings and such. Very cool.
JD Victor from New Jersey how are you sounds like you had a great time sharing all your trains with all your train buddies one stop after next looks like a barrel of fun your layouts coming along phenomenal your train collection second to you know who some guy who lives in Georgia I think you all do a great job you keep us all interested in the hobby love watching the progress keep up the good work maybe you'll make it out to York this year I'm going to try and get over there and meet everybody I would love to meet you as well enjoy say hello to your lovely assistant

Happy 4th!
Looks nice, grate upgrade.
The backgrounds look great. If you hadn’t pointed out painting the top parts, I wouldn’t have noticed. They make the room look much larger.
Good to see extra coal cars too.
Beautiful work on the backdrops Jason, very enjoyable running session. Thanks for another great video.
Fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Being at C/P you were 5 min from my house!!!
Love to See All Those Trains Running That Is Awsome.
JD, your backdrops look amazing, you’ve done a great job with them and what a huge difference in your basement, makes me wanna camp out there. Ron
Your backdrops add so much realism to your layout Jason. I didn’t realize installing backdrops was so hard. Overall a great update video. Thanks! Keep up the awesome work! 👍😃🚂
Thanks for the update Jason. When I built my layout, I ended up painting that walls a blue that resembled a hazy summer sky, similar to the blue that is on your backdrops.
Looking great!😍
Awe thank you Shelby 😘
The back drop looks fantastic!!!! Thanks for sharing Jason.
Looks like you moved your layout outdoors. 😁 It looks terrific, plenty of depth. I prefer more scenic than industrial. All in ones taste and railroading. Thanks Jason
Glad you like it!
Great video, love the back drops, great job.
Nice video Jason! Always love to see layout updates!
Beautiful layout Jason; thanks for sharing. Always interesting material presented. Good to see some Conrail power rolling. 8-)
I Like it. If and When your Layout is Done I think it is Gonna Be a Kick Ass Layout when Done.
Great job Jason!
Really enjoying the meet ups and shared layout time with your friends.
Great layout update Jason! Backdrops make your layout look larger.
Awesome & beautiful train set project video
I love that knuckle hitch. I need that for my jeep.
Love the t-shirts and new logo also great job Jason ;-)
That backdrop looks awesome beats looking at drywall you making some good progress there I bet you make some more during the winter especially if he gets snowed in 👍👍
Dang, Jason. That’s awesome! I was so looking forward to meeting you guys that day. Hope to make the new date whenever that is announced. I have a super busy summer schedule. I hope to continue progress on my layout in the fall. I also just saw Top Gun: Maverick. OMG! It was insane!
Sorry we had to cancel. It will happen again.
Looks great! I'm sure Bob Ross would approve. Especially if you add some happy little trees.
Those box cars may be a bit to much color. However, kids love the color. If you have kids visit they would love them. Probably why my kids favorite engine at Greenfield Village is the blue Baldwin.
Keep up the good work.
Definitely will be adding a lot of happy little trees!
Love the backdrops. Mine are only 24 inches high. Yours look more realistic at 42 inches. Looking forward to future updates
Thanks Dale!
The backdrops look great! I can’t wait to see your mountain!
Great video. I love the new logo.
Cedar Point is my happy place. We went in late May.
Love the new logo. The backdrops are awesome Jason. Great update 👍
Hi Jason! That's so cool all you guys got together. You might remember me from that time at Olive Garden in York. Last York I briefly met Chris.
I do, Denny! Hope you're doing well.
Great layout update. The Conrail doesn't say C40-8W on the cab btw.
Great job on the backdrop and blending it in. Honestly looks great!!
Thank you!
The backdrops look amazing ! keep up the awesome work. youve inspired me to jump back into building my layout
That's awesome! Glad to hear it.
Awesome 🚂👍🚅
You are wrong .... you are Bob Ross. Do not beat yourself up as I do see a lot of progress. The Mona Lisa was not painted in just one day. Great work.
Wow. Lots of work = lots of fun!
Nice!!! Love your layout videos! I was at cedar point yesterday lol!
Good to see you back!
The backdrops really do look awesome!
Love the backdrop and also love your videos.
Thank you!
Another great video as always!! I love the new Conrail engine one of my favorite railroads, and the background looks awesome. Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks! Need more Conrail!
those rotary coals are awesome
Looking good hard work paid off on background 👍
I see Conrail is finally showing up on your railroad lol. Those backdrops look great but something I couldn't handle installing. I see we have the same taste in rolling stock. I own alot of the same rolling stock as you do. I was up in the air about the Atlas O BNSF buffer cars but after seeing them on your video I ordered a set for my unit tank train. Yeah hi-cube scale box cars normally sell pretty quickly. I always pre-order those, I was lucky enough to find 4 different road numbers of the Atlas O Berwick hi cube at reasonable prices a couple of years ago. Atlas O made 12 different road numbers of them but you still can't find them. Anyway looking forward to getting my Atlas O BNSF buffer cars and sell off the Lionel versions. The Lionel versions have issues with being too light and couplers uncoupling.
I see you listed the Lionel one already! lol. I'm still trying to add more Conrail. Won't ever have as much as you though.
Hay Jason. This is Tony. Never spoke to you befor. I tried to attend your live stream show but I couldent seen to figure out how to participate in the conversation. Maybe I'll figure out next time. Anyways I enjoy watching your chanal and watching your layout grow. Thank you Tony Savarino.
O scale Proto 48 does interest me these days. I have sold off a lot off a lot of my HO collection as I simply had too much. I would like to do an O scale a smaller Port Area switching layout in a poor area of town in the 1970s. I would like a video on prototype-like Switching Industries in O scale and showing your O SCALE technics.
