I love how Reese De’What pronounces his last name a little louder each appearance.
This Is The Way! Lol
de’WHAT??
Kenan going "de'WHAT" is one of my favourite parts of SNL
"Dude, I don't care how crazy I am, this a pineapple" love her delivery on that
She should have just asked him to trade steaks with her.
3:10
It was probably a surprise to her what was under the plate cover.
Best line and perfect delivery loved it
@@HKatgreen makes sense, since she completely dropped her hockey accent
For people who don't know: that actually is the origin of the phrase! Gaslighting really does come from the film "Gaslight" which this is parodying.
Not gonna lie, I actually was looking this up to see as I glanced at your comment! XD
@@wardenm Get some Bergman.
Watching it, I was like...so he wants her brushed off into the asylum so he can find the jewels. Sure. On the plus side, Angela Lansbury was beautiful at that age.
@@amyrenaud7589 this and “witness for the prosecution” cemented Angela as an acting champ…
@@amyrenaud7589 she also has a few short scenes at this age in one of my favorite movies “ the picture of Dorian Gray” 1945
The fact that they were able to recreate the costumes from the film is absolutely amazing
SNL has an incredible wardrobe dept so I'm not surprised 👍
Kudos to the costuming staff.
This was actual footage of the film. Everyone knows that
Kate McKinnon’s role in this had me dead! This was so funny! Breaking her accent and just straight up like “dis a pineapple!” HAHAHA
Snl is gas lighting you.
@@RoyalDee-n9h >.> WHAT?!
Seems like Kate is in all these TCM skits! 😂😂😂
The way they even Photoshopped Kate and Will's faces on the poster 😂
😂😂🤣
I love all of Keenan's presenter characters. He and Bill Hader really know how to set a sketch
Don't forget Dan Aykroyd as Leonard Pinth-Garnell in the "Bad Conceptual Theater" sketches.
Kate is exceptionally good here. I cannot stop watching her saying "That was up?.. because to me that was not up!". Perfect delivery !
This is equally parody and a pretty accurate paraphrasing of the movie
I think SCTV did the same thing back in season 3 (it wasn't exactly like this, but they did do a parody of "Gaslight").
@@canaisyoung3601 was that the sketch where Joe Flaherty was trying to dump Andrea Martin out of a wheelchair off a cliff lmao its been a while since I've seen it.

It's tragic to think that most people watching this have no idea how perfect Chloe Fineman's portrayal of Angela Lansbury is here. Its like she's the only one of the three to have actually seen the film.
I saw the film and she nailed it!😀
Ingrid Bergman she portrayed Ingrid Bergman
@@twomblypublishing that's Kate McKinnon.
@@sthomson06 right, doing an impersonation of Ingrid Bergman ( someone incorrectly referred to the character she was impersonating as Angela Lansbury. In this movie Lansbury played the coquettish maid- Bergman had the leading role, and did an incredible job....one of my favorite movies of all time)
@@twomblypublishingyou misread :) the comment said Chloe Fineman was impersonating Lansbury which is correct.
Reese dewhat never showed us his wife but i automatically visualize leslie jones's livid face whenever he talks about his marriage
❤ Leslie Jones, miss her!
Don’t you mean DerTricia?
ME TOO OMG
OH THANKS GOD, IT'S NOT JUST ME
This looks like a good movie! Can’t wait to see its sequels, Gatekeep & Girlboss.
it is a good movie. You should watch the real thing
Normalization was the best movie.
@@henrybelman7424 At the Academy Awards, it won "Best Picture" and Ingrid Bergman won for "Best Actress". This film was also directed by George Cukor
It’s honestly really great.
It's pretty good finale. When the husband is arrested, she gaslights him she doesn't have the knife to set him free, but it's in her hands.
Will's "Ohhhh..my cuckoo darling" line set up to what I knew would be another adorably ridiculous cinema classic with Kate.
Kate McKinnon’s Ingrid Bergman never gets old… her Casablanca portrayal is HILARIOUS!!
I can't believe "...and I'm afraid its membrane as well" didn't get a bigger laugh. 😄
that was comedy gold
Best part of the sketch 😆
will is a genius!
Not enough Gen Xers in the audience maybe. 😉
Please help us dummies understand
SNL is gaslighting you into believing this is a parody. It's actually the real thing!
I know it's real. Not my fault no one cares about classic movies anymore unless it's that nostalgic crap from the 1980s and 1990s.
Is it a parody? Of what?
@@kylejonas3875 Of the movie "Gaslight".
The
De’what!?
Will Forte sneaking a Cypress Hill reference in this sketch is pure gold
I caught that too!!!
I was checking to find someone else caught that too!
I was actually pretty disappointed by both the lack of comments about it and the lack of reaction from the audience!
Especially considering their history with snl, that was absolutely priceless
yeeees ahahahhaah
This needs to be a weekly sketch, honestly. I still go back and watch The Birds one.
The Wizard of Oz is my favorite. The Will Ferrell cameo is hilarious 😂
@@salemmayhem6349 "WHAT WERE WE WEARING?!" 😆
The Birds one is screamingly funny.
Loooove the character building on Reese De'WHAT, he and his wife have been a part of my life for years now LOL
In the film Gaslight, the man isn't actually just dimming the gaslights! He told his wife he was leaving the house, but then he went upstairs or something and when he turned on the lights in another room it would dim the gaslights down where the wife was. She accused him of lying, saying that someone was in the house. He told her she was crazy because he didn't want to be caught :)
The film is worth watching.
But seriously, Gaslight is one of my favorite movies. Everyone should see it.
I just watched it tonight, but because I saw the parody first, I laughed the whole time. It was good though.
If you like, you could try the 1948 'Sleep, My Love' or the 1955 'Footsteps in the Fog'. Both have similarities.
@@MikeGreenwood51 will do!!
That audible "Oh my God" from the audience when he kissed the 18-year old maid. 😂
In the actual movie the husband BLANTANTLY flirts with Angela Langsbury in front of wife. He compliments how good she looks, how she out to give tips to wife, and he also gets extremely physically close to maid, and she looks at him with flirty eyes.
Reese De’WHAT is one of those lovable SNL characters I am going to cherish as long as Kenan Thompson is on the show.
For those of you that don't know, the real film Gaslight is on RUclips for free and it's brilliant! It's true the term came from the play and film. I'm proud SNL does these parodies to Introduce new audiences to old masterpieces.
Kenan can never leave SNL. It would never be the same without him.
Oh you crazy coocoo bird. That is not Kenan on SNL. That is Brad Pitt from Fight Club.
I don't know - I agree about Kenan being awesome, but this presenter dialogue is amateurish and childish. I mean, really. He is fantastic, but the scripts for him are not. Completely unfunny.
“& your membrane as well” 😂
I think the audience missed that part. Should've got more laughs.
That made me laugh out loud
YEAH that was under apreciated
It was a good line; maybe you have to be off a certain age
“I’ve been reading a rat all these years?”
Also Gregory, is an amazing author lol
Will's accent is giving me italian french englishman with a touch of mrs. doubtfire
Translation: it's a wildly inaccurate Charles Boyer vocal impression.
But I'll forgive it because I've heard worse watching Pepe Le Pew cartoons (coincidentally, Charles Boyer is one of the inspirations behind Pepe Le Pew. The other is Maurice Chevalier, but everyone focuses on the Boyer inspiration because one of the characters he played was named Pepe Le Moko. If you watch a pre-Hays Code Lubitsch musical [one made between 1929 and 1934] with Maurice Chevalier in it, you'll notice a lot of the characters he plays are like Pepe) and, come on, it's a parody. Parodies are supposed to mock everything about their subject (or a good chunk of it). Look at SCTV or MAD magazine in its heyday.
😂😂😂
“Can’t believe you told me it was 9 inches and I said ‘Oh, lucky me’”. “IT IS!!!!”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Funniest part of the skit. Every woman’s been there Paula. We’ve all been gaslit
Kate hasn't. Which makes it stupid since she's not even in to men. But okay, make insults about them. THAT is gaslighting.
Men have told you their penises were longer than you could actually see with your eyes and feel with your hand that it was? How the hell does that work? I want to try it.
lucky me im a lesbian
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 She was playing a straight character.
🤣😂😂
Chloe Fineman as 18-year old Angela Lansbury was fantastic!
I actually saw the film last year for the first time. Still holds up pretty well. Also, Angela Lansbury as an 18-year-old still invokes a face of a grandmother in this film. She’s got a weird sexy grandma face.
Same here!
My hubby thought Lansbury was hot stuff then I told him it was Mrs. Potts. He had no clue.
Stupid sexy grandmas.
yep, so people always look mature, some people always look young. Angela looked mature even as a kid
Anybody seen Lansbury as the princess in Danny Kaye's "Court Jester"? Young and beautiful in a low-cut dress, with hooded lids and a sultry voice. And completely spoiled and crazy. Perfect.
Who else want to see a sketch of our boy De'What with his wife?
Reece’s Wife: REECE, de”WHAT” ARE YOU DOING WITH THIS MARRIAGE?!?
They would need to get some ridiculously well known actress for maximum comedy potential. Like Lupita Nyongo or something
This has been my absolute favorite Reese DeWhat performance by Kenan, stellar job (;
I watched the movie after this. What a classic.
1:57...I'm upset that he made a Cypress Hill "Insane in the membrane" reference and only ONE PERSON in the audience got it. Tragic.
1993 was long time ago.
gas light is a legit film the story is a close in wife sees the gaslight go on and off and tries to leave but doesnt, the husband was really looking for jewels from her side of the family, its pretty good I recommend it
"insane just like your brain and I'm afraid it's membrane as well"...underrated but I appreciated that
"I'm afraid your membrane as well." Only my 90s peeps laughed.
Chloe was so good in her impression that for a sec it felt like a real old movie ! Give her biggest roles, she is an excellent actress !
I love how he says his own name as if he's being startled mid-sentence. "Reese DeWHAT!" 😂
you just know its going to be good when its a cinema classic sketch w kate
Love the episode with Emma Thompson, the actress who can't stop talking, and when Kate in Cassanlanca 😁
Well actually have you ever been disappointed with any skit Kate was in first time I ever saw her I thought she is a good actress and comedian SNL for years has reputation for new young talent every time some cast leave and they bring new ones aboard u worry u won't like it but then you love all new replacements everything SNL IS KING
well kate acts bad in this....she reads too much and without hide it :( It's annoying. I love her always, but in this she failed. It happens
Who knew the word “membrane” could make me chuckle so nostalgically
All jokes aside, Gaslight is a great movie and I HIGHLY recommend it!
9 inches lmao. If that’s the case I experience gaslighting every time I get on Grindr 😂
not enough people in the audience laughed at the Cypress Hill joke.
INSANE IN THE BRAIN!!!
Reese De’WHAT?! gets me every time.
I'm currently experiencing gaslighting by my landlord. This video is spot on. It helped me to realize that the accuser is avoiding the issue and placing the blame on me. Thank you SNL
I was hoping the joke was going to be about the modern overuse of the term. I actually was gaslighted (gaslit?) by an ex, right before the term became fashionable. Some very intricate lies are involved in gaslighting.
Y'all use it any time someone tells you to calm down.
"Honey, you're literally SCREAMING in the supermarket because you can't find your phone."
"He's GASLIGHTING me!!"
The ‘9 inches’ part had me laughing hard. Talk about being gaslit 😂😂😂
This is my favorite Kenan character.
Same
This is the real thing. They gaslit you into believing it wasn’t real
they planned it all along. it spans generations. and they call it _the mandela effect_
I’ve missed Reese De’WHAAAATTT!!!! a lot.
"Gaslight" is a REALLY good movie.
Every time I love Kenan's comments about Reese's comments about his failed relationship life with his wife
"And the gas bill is going to be insane! Just like your brain, and I'm afraid its membrane as well."
I think it's funny that the term is gaslighting, but the gas lights dimming was the ONLY thing he was doing unintentionally lol
No he intentionally dims them.
@@lisab9541 I will not be gaslighted by someone who doesn't even have the decency to do it in person
Whoever played the maid nailed re-creating Angela Lansbury in the role. She was perfect.
In my house gaslighting is when I light a match after my wife rips one under the blanket 😂
Thank you for this. A lot of us women have seen or heard references to this film, but had a hard time understanding it well enough. Your portrayal explains it perfectly! Guaranteed, you have saved lives with this. Bless you!
1:29 kate has made a career out of that expression. just cracks you up by the sheer naughtiness 😂
“I can’t believe you told me it was 9 inches and I said ‘oh lucky me’”
Grindr, basically.
Did he just give her a rock? Elmo would be livid.
either a rock or a potato
Elmo and that rock. 😂😂😂
LOL @ the one dude that got the Cypress Hill reference.
Reece De’What!! Glad to see you back fam!
I was just thinking about this character driving home from work the other day. . I need more of this sketches. “That’s not why I’m here, I’m not a good guesser, just ask my wife” 😂
😂😂😂he narrates the movie so eloquently lol then he shouts out De’ what like a nightclub DJ. 😂😂😂
As a lover of the original film, it’s by far my favorite Film of all time. This was gold ! Hahah spot on 😂
More skits like these please this was a good one, I was watching the real one the other day lol 😂
@Becky Gornecki me too!😀🤗💡👍
@@SuperMarioBrosIII yess 🤗 👍🏻
Hey this looks like a docudrama of my childhood home in Pine Valley, Alabama.
I've heard claims that the 1944 movie is better than the 1940 original, but I still prefer the 1940 version. It's more intense and emotionally engaging. The 1944 version can be over the top, and in that way, this parody really matches the 1944 American version much more closely, just as announced.
Reese’s wife: “Guess what I’m making for dinner!”
Reese: “I don’t know, a mess? Worst. welcome. home. from prison EVER!”
HERS!
I used to think gaslighting was when your car's gas light would trick you into thinking you were low on gas, even though you still have about 30 miles worth of gas left.
i feel like the real movie here is the life of reese de'what - we keep getting tiny glimpses into this mans life and with every revelation im more and more intrigued
Lol at the three people in the ‘live laugh’ who got the insane in the membrane reference
A friend of mine was a journalist that covered 45(DJT). The thousands of cases of gaslighting had her livid.
Gaslights were common in residential use even into the early 20th century when electricity was becoming more common. In rural areas people had neither, relying on oil lamps I suppose. Wealthy farmers could have their own generators but most farmers probably did not if they were away from cities. Would be interesting to know when gas lighting stopped being available in urban areas - though it was used for stoves just like today - and gas heat at some point replaced coal furnaces.
I love the prop, the book 📕 “How to Gaslight Your Wife”..
Damn they made a Cypress Hill joke and not one person laughed.
1:53
Yes, that is clearly a Cypress Hill joke/reference. But delivery just didn't feel/seem funny whether it was timing or delivery. And both Kate and Forte are very funny and skilled professionals.
Too subtle.
It was definitely a delivery error..If he woulda said that stuff in the rhythm of track..just a little even..he would have gotten a laugh...and why the hell is THAT the only damn song ever referenced from Cypress Hill..aside from a really cool scene out of Parks and Recreation where "Hits from the Bong" got referenced...
@@johndow7689 There was no delivery error. What makes it funny is that he delivered it in a serious way and as if it could just pass off as a regular line of dialogue.
"That was up" took me outttt😂😂😂😂😂
Now you know the source material, now you know the context, and yet 95% of you will continue to completely misuse the term "gaslighting." Thanks for trying anyway, SNL writers.
This is the funniest book about gaslighting i have ever read.
I remember these videos so well, they are some of the funniest skits
There's something about Kate's performances and this Cinema Classics material that is a perfect fit.
"Worst welcome from prison EVER!!!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hers'!
👏😂
For anyone wondering, the gaslights would dim because he was turning on the lights in the attic so he could search it for her murdered aunts jewels. Three guesses who murdered her.
Of course MGM pretty much tried to gaslight audiences by trying to pretend that their 1944 Boyer/Bergman film was not a remake of the earlier 1940 Wynyard/Walbrook picture, which was actually better, as well as being more faithful to Patrick Hamilton's original stage play. They even went so far as to try and destroy all copies of the 1940 film in an effort to erase it from memory. Fortunately it was not lost entirely, and is now available again in a restoration by the BFI.
Actually one of my favorite movies 😂
Reese De'WHHAAAAT!!!
I love how SNL makes a point for the society and make it so funny at the same time
I "And I'm afraid it's membrane as well" LOOOOL!!!!
"...and I'm afraid its membrane as well."
This is basically the movie, it's a good one too
Whenever I hear Reese de'WHAT, I know it's gonna be a great sketch.
I remember watching Gaslight for the first time as a kid because she had the same name as me--I didn't meet another Ingrid until I was in my 30s. I HATED HATED HATED my name (growing up an Ingrid in BFE Louisiana in the 80s was no treat), but Ingrid Bergman was so beautiful and poised... she was the kind of "ingrid" I wanted to be.
Obviously I fell significantly short of classy and elegant, but the comfort of there being another person with my name meant a lot to me as a kid.
(Also, Kate McKinnon nailed this impression--and her Tippi Hedren in the SNL 'The Birds' sketch was equally spectacular)
Would love to see both of them in a comedy motion film. Both these artists are super talented
The way Kate says 'dude' cracks me up.
LOVE CINEMA CLASSICS ❤️
