My closest Sephora and Ulta is in the Mall and I started seeing more stand alone Sephora recently. When I go to Sephora they are always trying to sell me or my mom something and during sales it is very chaotic. Also I'm more likely to buy a huge range of products especially from black owned brands and skincare. Ulta has security at the front door but the staff are really helpful and I'm more likely to buy haircare, perfume and elf products. Also I think Ulta's point system because you can instantly use the points over Sephora trick for using 500 pts for just $10 off which isn't a good deal.

I was followed around Sephora after two girls were caught stealing while I was in the store looking to purchase a new fragrance. Once I selected the fragrance I wanted, the girl (Sephora employee) told me she had to take my fragrance to the counter and it would be waiting on me when I was ready to check out. It was a Jo Malone fragrance, which is pretty pricey, so I thought nothing of it…….UNTIL I went to take it back because I hated it. I purchased another fragrance; this time, the Sephora employee that helped said, “Oh no, I don’t have to take it the counter, you can hold it until you’re ready to check out.” I asked why the experience was different just days before. Her look was literally >>😳. So yeah….SOME Sephora employees do racially profile. Ulta….their employees seem to just let you be and don’t bother you unless you have questions. I prefer Ulta unless I need something they don’t carry.
Oh wow! Idk Sephora’s policies firsthand, but yeah… I’ve never had to give them my products to place at the counter until I was ready, so that’s very shady. 🤔 It’s so disappointing to hear about all the unpleasant experiences BW are having at both stories. I like both, but tbh I shop online more than anything unless I just wanna get out of the house. Sephora/ curbside is clutch and then the inventory at the Ulta near me is terrible and I end up having to order everything anyway.
I really like both! I have credit cards for both stores. I do think Ulta has a better point system just because at Sephora no matter what tier you are it’s always one point per dollar whereas Ulta you can earn up to 1.5 points per dollar. I only started doing my make up a few months ago and heavily spent at Ulta because their brands are more affordable but now that I’m getting the hang of things, I definitely pop in to Sephora to get higher name brands. I can definitely see myself moving more towards Sephora just because I want better quality products, but for things that are sold out both stores, I would probably go to Ulta just because of the point system.

I spend more money at Sephora in general though, especially now that I’ve gotten into more fragrances and higher end hair products. I do love Ulta! I get a lot of body care from them and when I’m shopping for gifts for other people it’s a go-to. 💕

I’m here for this video!! I’m for both, though I typical go to Ulta more than Sephora. I think it all comes down to region and what people are looking for. I just don’t really see how we can compare the two, lol. And I too thought that you go to Sephora for one thing and Ulta is for another thing. Ulta is like that bubbly friend (like Tracee Ellis Ross) and Sephora is more the refined friend (like unbothered Beyoncé??😂) we need them both in our lives. Off topic but I do feel like brands are starting to see the benefits of selling in Ulta, and I won’t be surprised to see more brands announcing their partnerships with them.

Okay so based on the malls you listed we are around the same area since I work in a mall close to Cumberland. I think I’ll try ulta since I’m just now starting off with makeup and the employee thing also doesn’t bother me since I work in retail so ulta it is.

Being a former Ulta employee, Ulta is still light years behind Sephora. The way the employees are treated is nothing to take lightly. There is hardly any gratis given to cashiers, the layout of the store is weird, fragrance sucks because we would always be out of testers. The skincare selection needs a MAJOR update. Then on top of that the prestige brands they carry I feel like no one really uses anyway. KKW no thank you, Benefit no thank you, Clinique (as far as makeup ) ,Urban Decay etc. Those brands aren’t IN. They also don’t offer free shipping like Sephora is doing since the pandemic and that’s also annoying. They do need to change their aesthetic. When I first started working there I did think the concept was so cool, but as I’ve gotten older if I want drugstore I’ll just go to the drugstore if I want higher end I’ll go to Sephora. I think that’s why it’s hard to get a certain vibe in Ulta because you have $45 foundation in the same place as $10 foundation. It’s not an inconvenience to me to go to two different stores especially when I enjoy just being inside one. I can go to Sephora and not even buy anything because I just enjoy being in there. Employees will be rude no matter where you go and that’s dependent on location. My local Sephora and Ulta I’ve never had a bad experience. Both stores can improve and yes Sephora’s point system is not good at all but I can tell over the past few years they have tried to come up with different offers and discounts. At the end of the day Sephora is a more luxury experience and I don’t expect to get many discounts at a store like that. It’s like comparing Macy’s to Saks 🤷🏾♀️
As a trans person, i have NEVER felt comfortable or like I deserved to be there in a Sephora, i have always felt condescended to and looked down upon and it makes me feel so guilty for existing. Ulta, on the other hand, makes me feel safe and comfortable, and i love the more accepting environment that my store has. That's just my personal experience, but I thought it was worth a mention :)

Loved this ! I definitely agreed on most of the responses. I love both stores equally lol. I go to both stores for different products. I normally go to Sephora when I want something luxury (fragrance, high end makeup and skin care products/ body products). I go to Ulta more because it is convenient and has drug-store products ( which are definitely cheaper at Walmart or target lol). Ulta doesn't have the largest fragrance collection but they do have a good amount and they have ALOT of travel size fragrances that I get to use before I buy the full size from Sephora. The only Sephora's here are in JcPenny's and in the mall. When I traveled to ATL I fell in love with the Sephora in Lenox lol ! I too love Sephora's point system better then Ulta, I find that I never get discounts other than the " $3.50 off" discount when I go to Ulta. :( but for Sephora I just let my points rack up until its WORTH using them.

Okay so here we go lol. As soon as you said “when you walk into Sephora,” I finished with you get followed. Now mind you, I feel like Atlanta and Florida where you from may be wayyyy more diverse so that maybe why. Sephora fragrances are top tier so that is literally the reason I shop there. Other than that, I’ll shop online if I don’t feel like that energy or go to Ulta. Anddddd Ulta staff gives compliments and are very welcoming.
I totally get how the experience varies based on where you live. I really hate hearing that Black women are being racially profiled when we more than likely spend the most money in these stores. I honestly love Sephora & Ulta (especially for high end natural hair products) but I also believe I’ve had the privilege of having mainly black staff in both places where I’m from, but it’s sad that people are being racially profiled in other areas. Terrible we have to keep dealing with stuff like that…
Hey girl! I too, love both stores for all that they have to offer. I mentioned that same privilege in the video. Having lived in south all of my life and now Atlanta, the I experience extremely diverse staffs mostly everywhere I go. The racial profligate and overall discomfort BW are experiencing at both establishments is very disappointing.
I shop at both Sephora and Ulta. I prefer Sephora though. I have not been followed around at either but I have had a lot better customer experience with Sephora as the Ulta employees a lot of times don't even ask if I need help, or don't genuinely answer my questions. I've also seen a more diverse team at the Sephora's I have been too and the Black girls are like my homegirls.
Same!!! Thinking back, I've had better experiences with employees at Sephora. I haven't has any issues at Ulta, but it's just a different vibe all together. It gives very much help yourself. I loveeeeeee making friends with the Black girls at work. They're always a good time.
yessss i’ve has bas memories at ulta to the point where i spoke on it to a black employee (mistakenly). she walked away with that creepy ass smile and things changed ever since. nonetheless tho @ ulta i got traumatized from being followed around to the point where i’d purposely carry no bag or anything smh
I love this video. Needed perspective on both places, and you did a great job highlighting both 👏🏾. I love both stores for completely dif reasons. Sephora for fragrances, prestige brands, and Fenty (no Fskin is not at Ulta yet), and i go to Ulta for everything else. But if i had convenience and access to both stores, i would be at both equally.

Ulta staff are helpful and the variety of things I can find there is 👩🏽🍳😙 I just prefer affordable and drug store items plus those points chilllleeee! they can rack up quickly. *if you don’t have the Ulta app you should get it. You’ll see more on how to get points. They offer a lot of 2x,3x even up to 5x the points on specific items or purchases!

A lot of people are saying that Sephora just isn't convenient. There's a new Ulta near me and I like going there, but the stock is always low af on everything, so I still end up at Sephora.
I like going oth but from my experience where I am....I have the worse experiences in Ulta dealing with staff (they give off the think they better than everybody) but Sephora people be chill majority of the time. It do be loud in club Ulta. I be like dang turn it down a notch booboo

Regarding the point system, 2000 points in Ulta will give you about 125.00 off products, services, however you want to use them, so Ulta does have a better point system.
Sephora may have a better experience with "higher end" products; Theyre so stuck up in Philly. I usually go in with my headphones and ignore them. Ulta staff is usually far more friendly for a shopping experience. I do prefer Sephora for products though especially my scents

Sephora in my country doesn't carry Chanel but the large Shoppers Drug Mart stores do. Our Department stores carry Chanel as well.

I’ve been shopping online a lot more lately, especially for Fenty because they always have exclusive deals and sales on their website.
I used to stan ULTA now I prefer Sephora- customer service is excellent, rewards and skincare is everything! (I'm a NY esthetician)
And ULTA sends me all these coupons but can't use them on the good stuff 🙄

Hey girl! I thought this was so interesting, because I learned a lot about the experiences ppl were having at these stores. I love Sephora and Ulta, so it was easy to be unbiased lol Sephora does seem a little more inconvenient for most ppl as far as parking and location.

Loved this ! I definitely agreed on most of the responses. I love both stores equally lol. I go to both stores for different products. I normally go to Sephora when I want something luxury (fragrance, high end makeup and skin care products/ body products). I go to Ulta more because it is convenient and has drug-store products ( which are definitely cheaper at Walmart or target lol). Ulta doesn't have the largest fragrance collection but they do have a good amount and they have ALOT of travel size fragrances that I get to use before I buy the full size from Sephora. The only Sephora's here are in JcPenny's and in the mall. When I traveled to ATL I fell in love with the Sephora in Lenox lol ! I too love Sephora's point system better then Ulta, I find that I never get discounts other than the " $3.50 off" discount when I go to Ulta. :( but for Sephora I just let my points rack up until its WORTH using them.

Ulta is definitely clutch for their travel size fragrance collection. It’s almost like Sephora is doing away with theirs because the one I go to only has the full-size bottles on display. 🤔

Okay so here we go lol. As soon as you said “when you walk into Sephora,” I finished with you get followed. Now mind you, I feel like Atlanta and Florida where you from may be wayyyy more diverse so that maybe why. Sephora fragrances are top tier so that is literally the reason I shop there. Other than that, I’ll shop online if I don’t feel like that energy or go to Ulta. Anddddd Ulta staff gives compliments and are very welcoming.
I totally get how the experience varies based on where you live. I really hate hearing that Black women are being racially profiled when we more than likely spend the most money in these stores. I shop online a lot now that I pretty much know what I want and need. What’s funny is that not dog doesn’t like Sephora, but she like ulta. 😂

The employees overall do a great job at making you fell comfortable. I wish it was the same way for the hair stylists, nail techs and food service providers here though. Online shopping is where its at!!! I love getting packages.
I honestly love Sephora & Ulta (especially for high end natural hair products) but I also believe I’ve had the privilege of having mainly black staff in both places where I’m from, but it’s sad that people are being racially profiled in other areas. Terrible we have to keep dealing with stuff like that…
Hey girl! I too, love both stores for all that they have to offer. I mentioned that same privilege in the video. Having lived in south all of my life and now Atlanta, the I experience extremely diverse staffs mostly everywhere I go. The racial profligate and overall discomfort BW are experiencing at both establishments is very disappointing.

I shop at both Sephora and Ulta. I prefer Sephora though. I have not been followed around at either but I have had a lot better customer experience with Sephora as the Ulta employees a lot of times don't even ask if I need help, or don't genuinely answer my questions. I've also seen a more diverse team at the Sephora's I have been too and the Black girls are like my homegirls.
Same!!! Thinking back, I've had better experiences with employees at Sephora. I haven't has any issues at Ulta, but it's just a different vibe all together. It gives very much help yourself. I loveeeeeee making friends with the Black girls at work. They're always a good time.
yessss i’ve has bas memories at ulta to the point where i spoke on it to a black employee (mistakenly). she walked away with that creepy ass smile and things changed ever since. nonetheless tho @ ulta i got traumatized from being followed around to the point where i’d purposely carry no bag or anything smh
I love this video. Needed perspective on both places, and you did a great job highlighting both 👏🏾. I love both stores for completely dif reasons. Sephora for fragrances, prestige brands, and Fenty (no Fskin is not at Ulta yet), and i go to Ulta for everything else. But if i had convenience and access to both stores, i would be at both equally.

I love Sephora cause I am Rouge status! There point system is the best!!! I hate I have to drive way to the St. John’s Town center frfr! That sucks. I also like Ulta they have great sales and coupons!! Only thing I hate when I go into Ulta is there’s this one ☝️ lady at the Roosevelt Ulta who always ask do I need help! 🙄 she ask every damn five minutes!

I loved this video and comparison. I’m definitely an Ulta Gworl! My Sephora gives off snobby and judging vibes as well. Ulta staff are helpful and the variety of things I can find there is 👩🏽🍳😙 I just prefer affordable and drug store items plus those points chilllleeee! they can rack up quickly.
*if you don’t have the Ulta app you should get it. You’ll see more on how to get points. They offer a lot of 2x,3x even up to 5x the points on specific items or purchases!

Regarding the point system, 2000 points in Ulta will give you about 125.00 off products, services, however you want to use them, so Ulta does have a better point system.

Sephora may have a better experience with "higher end" products; Theyre so stuck up in Philly. I usually go in with my headphones and ignore them. Ulta staff is usually far more friendly for a shopping experience. I do prefer Sephora for products though especially my scents
