- It's March 1970, and nearly half a decade since last wearing the crown, one of Panama's finest boxers staves off the young bull and chops it up to win it back, as the hard-living and even harder fighting Mando Ramos is stopped on terrible cuts around both his eyes in the 2nd defence of his WBC & WBA titles.
What is most surprising here then is the high pace in which Laguna is willing to keep, or perhaps had to with his legs not allowing him to stay out of range as he could at his best. Still an experienced and nuanced ring navigator, Laguna's superior handspeed, jab and shot selection allowed him to keep up with the young champion, whose output of consistently powerful shots to head and body never waned as the blood poured freely.

I remember when I went to the Olympic Auditorium to see this fight it was super packed, and the atmosphere was electric! Mando would always pack the place, He had this 50-50 love, hate relationship with the people but he had a lot of charisma, he could have been really great, but he never took the sport seriously, but he had so much talent. He is still remembered, Laguna was a great fighter, very elegant style, third best just behind Duran and Panama Al Brown and ahead of Eusebio Pedroza.
A friend of mine who used to live in Long Beach said he saw Mando all high too often.
Jackie McCoy couldn't control him.
He was sure a beast though.
Probably the best teenager fighter outside of Benitez.
You may have seen this fight somewhere. But not at the Olympic. It was too big to be held there. The fight took place at the L.A. Sports Arena.

Pedroza was an overrated fighter who held a bum version of the title.

Prefiero observar estás peleas en donde los boxeadores muestran una técnica depurada que las porquerías de peleas del Canelo, Chávez Jr. ectera, ectera y un largo ectera.

iSMAEL LAGUNA was the fastest fighter I have ever seen. He was so fast that I use to think that there was something else going on in here.

Dos reflexiones. En primer término, tengo dudas sobre un resultado entre Ismael Laguna y Roberto Durán con ámbos púgiles en su plenitud. En segundo término, es impresionante como Mando Ramos pagaba con palizas su indisciplina.

Doesn't Laguna looks superb here though? Fights out of his skin, retaining his smoothness and outboxing ability while upping his output and putting it on the younger, bigger man.

With that smooth boxing style, I don't understand how did Ismael Laguna lost against the great Carlos Ortiz twice after defeating Ortiz the first encounter of their trilogy.

I am sure that many people forget that Ismael was not a well man in his second go with Buchanan and that he was robbed once against Ortiz. A classy fighter.
Carlos Ortiz never robbed anyone out of a fight. He was a classy champ & could accept defeat without all the blah blah we was robbed BS.

@@antoniomoreno3142 De eso no tengo dudas. Fué un gran boxeador, solo que tampoco fue la quintaesencia de la dulce ciencia. Tenía defectos, como ya escribí antes, bailoteaba mucho y no era un gran visteador. Si le reconozco su estilo tiempista y de veloces golpes, clasico estilo de la rep. de panama. Pero de ahí a calificarlo como uno de los mejores de dicho pais........
