When I joined the Navy in 1989, I was issued a pair of NB 574’s for PT. They proved to be one of the most comfortable shoes I ever owned. Great for running but comfortable for casual use too.
I was in the Army 1987-1990. Same. I remember NB and Saucony being two of few brands at the small PX near the barracks no matter where I was stationed. ✌🏽💙👟
The made in USA line is absurdly well built, my 990 have lasted years and I have beat the heck out of them. Although I think the price has gone up like $60 in just a couple years, not sure I can justify that
The Made in UK materials are solid but the build quality is very shoddy. I bought a pair of MIUK 991s and there were a bunch of issues. Glue stains, misaligned panels, the 991 stitching on the heel of one of my shoes was off center. I did some research and the anecdata says that this is not a rare occurrence. I decided not to return because I was afraid that the replacement pair would be worse and I needed everyday beaters. Very disappointing for the price point. I've never had a problem with MIUSA pairs.
NB 574 are the only shoes that do not cause a lot of foot pain for me while walking miles and miles. I have arthritis in both feet and it is firm enough and also soft enough and most importantly WIDE enough. They don’t have grommets that push into tender foot bits. I can get two years of heavy duty walking out of a pair. They really hold up to trail walking as well as pavement. For me they are worth the money.

The New Balance 574 kickstarted the transition of my shoe collection into almost all New Balance shoes. Having wide fit for most of their models, I just never looked back!
This has been my favorite shoe for 15 years now. The best pair of shoes I ever had was some 574 “backpack editions” I bought back in 2013. They were made from nylon to be easy to clean, and they all had brown suede New Balance “N” logos. Best looking pair of shoes ever. I’d pay good money to get a replacement pair.
I started wearing the 574’s around 05-06 when I was working for footlocker. They used to be 2 for $65. Everyone was calling them dad shoes. Definitely one of the best sneakers ever made.
I‘ve been looking for a sneaker for work with a wider toe-box and after watching your vid I ordered the exact color as in the video. super excited about how they‘re actually gonna hold up after a 40 hour work week standing on my feet!
I had a beautiful black and yellow pair but I did wear out the sole pretty bad and they weren’t the most comfortable shoes but were okay. I didn’t like how much heel toe drop they had
NB 574 are my go-to. They're always comfortable. My favorite skeakers of all time are the "camper" series. Made of rip stop nylon and man made meterial. They lasted FOREVER. I wore them on and off for 4 years.
I stumbled on a pair of high top 574s for super cheap at Ross around ten years ago and I i fell in love. I have straight up duck feet, so i really appreciated the wide toe box too. I wore those things to pieces.
Been wearing 574 for almost 10 years now and definitely my favorite. Always thought they were the most comfortable but never realized they had a wide tow box, which is good for me as I wear double or triple wide shoes.
This was my first NB. I got it on sale for 50€ and it singlehandedly sold me on the brand. Comfortable, affordable and it held up amazingly. The upper is still in great condition after 3.5 years of every other day wear. I will only retire them because the midsole is worn.
I cannot begin to tell you how many pairs of 574s I've had over the years. Almost as many as the Made in the USA 99x's. I have three 574s right now, love them all and they hold up!
So my wife's old ugg boots were starting to fall apart on her so she wanted a new pair. I remembered you did a video with wild wool and just ordered a pair. What an amazing experience! Great ugg boot! Thank you for the recommendation
The NB374 toherther with the Asics gel lyte III and the air max 90 are my favourite sneakers, the profile, the shape, the sillhoutte and the comfort........ everything is just perfect.
I bought a pair of 574s on a whim 7 years ago and they still are in great condition! They are just as comfortable as my modern running shoes but look SOOO much better.
I have about six pairs of 574s plus five more in the rugged fashion and a set of 9060s. New Balance has been my favorite brand for the past five years.
I came across the 574’s two years ago and was shocked how comfortable they were. I’ve been rocking the same blue suede shoes since then in Tokyo and the mileage I’ve gotten is way better than any Nike. I’m sold and this will be the first shoe I rebuy in the exact same make/model. They have the standard 574 and the “classic” with I think higher quality suede and fit/form.
Had mine for already 3 years, been on a field trips, occasional jogs, at work (I work in retail), and sometimes to theme parks. These shoes are awesome, I got mine in a size 8.5 EE, n for a shoe to little to no foam, they are the most comfortable shoe I ever worn!!!
I buy a pair about once a year and I’m sorted. They don’t really wear out but obviously the foam will compress a bit. Such a great shoe, I hope they never change.
In the 80s I was prescribed by a doctor a pair of silver NB. All I can remember is the inside was finished so well you could put your foot in it without a sock and couldn't feel ANY edge lines. It had a sole branded Vibram and the front "bumper" looked more pronounced. The only reason I remember them is I wore them for years until they fell apart in my hands. They were that comfortable on my impossibly wide and bony feet.
Been wearing 574s since high school and they've always been on-point. And yes, the wide toebox was the kicker for me back then, and still is w the Legacy series update.
I found a pair of New Balance at a Savers some years ago. I didn’t know anything about them but they were probably the best most comfortable pair of shoes I ever had!
574s have been my work shoe for the last four years. I get about 8-9 months out of a pair in harsh conditions (10 hr. Shifts running around, kicking doors open) In my experience the upper gives up the ghost before the midsole/ outsole. They are still comfortable when I have to retire them for looking a little rough.
Literally just bought another pair today , 574 Classic - I think I have 10 pairs in diffrent colorways - I have worn all brands and these are the perfect shoes for my feet, one of the only pairs of shoes that I wear down past the sole tread. I have 2 pairs of the 574 Legacy but to me the 574 Classic is the best - more comfortable, light and breathes better. Best shoe.
People really undervalue how good having a wide toe box is. I've been rocking 574 shoes since hs and I've never looked back. They're just a good balance of everything you need in a casual sneaker.
It's just good looking! No effing freaky attempts of creating a new image, but just a minimally stylish design. Details prominent enough to notice them when you're looking, but discrete when you're not. And not the ridiculously narrow toe boxes that 95% of new sneakers try to use to make them look sleek.
I fell in love with the original USA-made 993s and bought up some new old stock from an online seller after they were discontinued. It looks like it's been revived now, but I haven't bought a pair of new ones to compare with my old stock. I'll have to snag a pair of 574s at some point to compare. That wide toe box is attractive, and I look for shoes with that now. I don't love wearing shoes, and grew up going barefoot even when exploring the woods and blazing trails with a machete. I've always been picky, and now that I understand it better, wide shoes with a wide toe box and _just enough_ arch support seem to be what I was always trying to find.
I used to collect 574s, besides Palladiums, they're just the most comfortable sneakers I've every worn. Back in the 90's they also let long baggy pants drop in a way that the back of the cuffs wouldn't drag as much on the ground.
I bought a pair of 574s (identical to these) in 2017 and wore them 2-3 times a week for 7 years. I replaced them 3 months ago with another pair of 574s.
NB 574's were the first pair of shoes I purchased after I got out of the Army in 2009. They were probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I ever had. Looking back now I wonder why I went and purchased thousands of dollars worth of Nike and Vans shoes over the years.
I've become an NB head in the last 5 years. My oldest pair looks a little beat up but the outsole and upper are in great shape and while I'll need an insole due to the inside being well worn, those shoes will last me 10 years. Perfect shape for my wide feet. Most comfy sneakers I've owned, I niw have several. NB is my only sneaker now.
Back in the early 80's I was a teen at school and would have been called a 'jock' by you folks across the pond. Winter was Rugby and summer was athletics. I was in both respective school teams. I used to get my sports footwear from a dedicated sports only shop, no fashion shoes there. I had the 1st pair of Nikes (waffle blue and yellow) in the school and was laughed at when I turned up in my Adidas Los Angeles. Anyways, one day the shoe salesman showed my this new brand that they had started to stock called New Balance. It was by far the lightest running shoe that had ever worn. I was very impressed but as a sprinter & Discus thrower (yes weird combo back then) I stuck with my Adidas spikes and Nike all purpose trainer (can't remember model). I told my school team mates who ran distance events and wasn't long before most were buying them. I have never owned a pair of NB but have always been impressed with their technical design.
My girlfriend gave me a pair of these for my birthday and it’s my most used pair of shoes, goes well with a lot of outfits and super comfortable and very very breathable and light, definitely a thumbs up from me! 👍🏽
I was issued NB574 in the U.S. Army. I exclusively ran in NB574 and Saucony Jazz throughout my enlistment. I still have a soft spot for both models and have some amongst my adidas SL72s. The fact these “budget” runners are made similar to original specs is part of the allure. The 574 Legacy and the Jazz 81 are even more comfortable. ✌🏽💙👟
I wore the hell out of a chocolate brown suede pair I had in high school. Now I’m so happy they have easy to find width options in neutral colors. 4e white suede all day! Wish I had bought 3 pairs before they sold out.
In middle school, while wearing exclusively basketball shoes, I got a pair of 574s off the recommendation of a friend. I remember the moment I put them on. "Oh", I said, knowing a new world had burgeoned. Light, comfortable, balanced, clean. Undeniably better than the Jordans sitting next to them, for the requirements of a normal day. $60 retail, available with no hoops.
For people with haglund disease new balance 574 help a lot because of the high heels. I almost use only 574 shoes for 8 years and they saved me a lot of pain. In long term they became my worst enemy because they support my wrong type of walking, that gives too much weight to the front of the feet, adding other pain to the one on the heels.
I've mostly ever just worn vans, so when I bought these at $80, I expected them to last like a year tops. I've had them for two years and they're still comfy and look nice. Only complaint is the way the sole extends significantly past the back of the shoe, because it makes them uncomfortable to drive with.
When I worn-out my first New Balance 574 and drop my weight from 100 to 74 kg. I bought another 574. It is so damn comfortable and I love running with it although I am just recreational runner.
I used to collect these when I worked at champs sports from 2002-2006. Ive bought probably 40 pairs over the years. I only have seven left- after about 15 years the soles dry rot. Oh well they’re still cool to look at. Love 574s 😂 They were sixty bucks, two for 90 on sale.
The NB 574 is the only sport shoe I have used in the last 20 years. I have bought many of them. It is beautiful, super comfortable, not that soft, wide, durable… I have transitioned to barefoot shoes so I do not use them that much but they are still in my arsenal.
One of my all-time faves! J crew made some nice color collabs in ~2010s and I currently have a very nicely made Bodega 574 in ultra-hairy pig suede. Definitely one of the most comfortable sneakers out there.
Absolutely love my New Balance 574’s. I’m also a big Lems guy (I have 6 pairs!) so for me it’s a combo of lems and New Balances for the sneakers. I always buy the wide width in New balance to give even more room.
I wear my New Balance 574s and 9060s pretty much 50/50 throughout the week for about the last year. Through this side-by-side perspective, I can confidently say that the 574 is the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned, especially after it is broken in. I even prefer it to my Brooks, which I previously thought was going to be peak comfort (and the 574 was nearly $60 cheaper both my Brooks and 9060s).
I used to wear these New Balance running shoes in the 1980s but in the early 1990s I changed over to wearing Saucony Shadow Originals (not the 6000s). They look almost the same except the N logo is a curved stripe. I have wide feet so the Sauconys are more comfortable for me than the New Balances. Saucony still makes the Shadow Originals, they were only gray at the start but now they come in numerous color combinations.
Since suffering from plantar fasciitis for about 5 years I started wearing 574s. It was and still is virtually the only shoe I could wear without pain. I have 8 pairs and wear them everyday unless boots or normal shoes are required due to weather / function etc. I generally stick to the old school style tho.
Encap is a harder polyurethane circular heel pad surrounding a softer EVA foam. They insert these into their standard EVA foam. That's why you identified three different foam densities. This was one of New Balances' signature techologies back in the 1980s. The 574 was a decent basic running shoe but a little heavy and clunky compared to sleeker and lighter Nike, Puma, Asics and Adidas running shoes. The nearest equivalent was probably Saucony. They offered a D width, 2E width and 4E width in many of their running shoes which made New Balance popular with the people with wider feet.
This has been my everyday shoe for... I cannot even remember! Good quality, extremely comfortable, a ton of colors, and at an honest price. Could you ask for more?
Still have my 30+ years 574s in black and red. Except from the plastic back guard which broke and some front sole unglue they’re still going strong. Best longevity sneakers I’ve had, some other sole loses flexibility and brake, and some just desintegrate (Air 97s).
Thank you. I've been looking into getting a pair of New Balances for a while now. And now I have the perfect first pair of New Balance to go for. Seems a bit like Samba for Addidas to me. Good legacy and consistent value and quality. Great review as always, keep on keeping on

So my wife's old ugg boots were starting to fall apart on her so she wanted a new pair. I remembered you did a video with wild wool and just ordered a pair. What an amazing experience! Great ugg boot! Thank you for the recommendation
one of my favorite pair of shoes, i love the wide toebox and all the colors that new balance has.
I've got one pair for more than 6 years and still works 😄 Only instead of this mesh on top it has the same baggy material as these Lems in this video.
The wide toebox is solid gold. And I love the look, unbeatable.
I found a pair of New Balance at a Savers some years ago. I didn’t know anything about them but they were probably the best most comfortable pair of shoes I ever had!
574s have been my work shoe for the last four years. I get about 8-9 months out of a pair in harsh conditions (10 hr. Shifts running around, kicking doors open)
In my experience the upper gives up the ghost before the midsole/ outsole. They are still comfortable when I have to retire them for looking a little rough.
I have one pair of 574's for 6 years and they are still usable
I used a pair of these 20 years ago as a server. Other than having no grip in the kitchen they were fantastic.
Man, they used to have a 574 sport in a gunmetal and teal colorway. Freaking loved those shoes.
I used to make these shoes back in the day. In good ol Norridgewock Maine. My mother still works there. 30ish years
Have mine for almost 2 years and they still look and wear great! Might buy another pair after these get worn down.
NB 574's were the first pair of shoes I purchased after I got out of the Army in 2009. They were probably the most comfortable pair of shoes I ever had. Looking back now I wonder why I went and purchased thousands of dollars worth of Nike and Vans shoes over the years.
I love the 574. I have a high arch, very wide forefoot and narrow heels, and the 574 is the most comfortable sneaker I've ever worn.
This has been the one constant sneaker in my life since my teenage years. I always have at least one pair of 574s somewhere in the closet.
These are available on Catch in Australia for AU$30! That's about twenty bucks US. I just ordered a pair of these bad boys. Cheers mate 👍
New Balance is my favourite sneakers brand, bought about 20 pairs, currently have about 10 pairs and it never disappoints
✌🏽💙👟
Review the nicer made in the USA pairs
He has
I wore the hell out of a chocolate brown suede pair I had in high school.
As a nurse i wear the NB 574 platform sneakers they have been a Godsend for my feet ❤
I've mostly ever just worn vans, so when I bought these at $80, I expected them to last like a year tops. I've had them for two years and they're still comfy and look nice. Only complaint is the way the sole extends significantly past the back of the shoe, because it makes them uncomfortable to drive with.
The 574 and the 480 are two of my fav silhouettes of all time (480 is underrated too)
When I worn-out my first New Balance 574 and drop my weight from 100 to 74 kg. I bought another 574. It is so damn comfortable and I love running with it although I am just recreational runner.
Been wearing 574s for the last 20 years and nothing else. Perfect shoes.
I used to collect these when I worked at champs sports from 2002-2006. Ive bought probably 40 pairs over the years. I only have seven left- after about 15 years the soles dry rot. Oh well they’re still cool to look at. Love 574s 😂
They were sixty bucks, two for 90 on sale.
Thanks for producing awesome content. I grew up poor and always had wal mart shoes. Have you ever done cheap shoes from wal mart?
Yes he did
Check out his video “are Walmart dunks better than Nike” its from like 3 months ago.
He's also done Walmart boots and work boots.
I've had mine for roughly 2 years, they're great and comfy. Only downside is they are really slick if the ground is wet.
Are they runable or just for casual? Thanks!!
Me too-
Only shoes that work for my plantar fasciitis
Quite possibly my all time favorite sneaker. Fit me feet perfectly, are super comfortable, look great, and last long.
574s were my first pair of NBs, always a classic. The 990 series as well as the 991s and 993s are the best of the best now
Encap is a harder polyurethane circular heel pad surrounding a softer EVA foam.
I love 574s, one of my favorite sneakers ever. I’m currently wearing 420s though, very similar but like a stripped down version of the 574.
These and the similar Saucony shoes were always durable and so comfortable.
I currently have 4 pair and they’re all strait laced, like the 80’s kid I am!!
i own a pair of the red wing x nb 574 in the rough out muleskinner. 100% my favorite sneaker.
Thank you. I've been looking into getting a pair of New Balances for a while now. And now I have the perfect first pair of New Balance to go for. Seems a bit like Samba for Addidas to me. Good legacy and consistent value and quality. Great review as always, keep on keeping on
The New Balance MR00 Minimus was a masterpiece for road running. Never understood why it was discontinued.
