“Protect children” .. how about punish parents who allow their little kids on a platform that has age restrictions? I get that might be hard, but I’m sick and tired of lazy parents blaming everyone else for their lack of concern for their children.
Exactly. I’m 22 and I was one of the gen z who had early internet access. My mom thought I was just playing webkinz but that wasn’t always the case.
I agree, if you're not willing to parent your kids and feed them to the internet where ANYTHING can happen just to blame others for their decisions then WHY have kids in the first place? To have them as decorations or to be "aesthetic"???
@@levii6126 I'm 21. I think I first got internet access at around 12 or 13, so I had a good portion of my childhood without electronics aside from cable television. As happy as I was to finally get internet access at my house, it really wasn't a good thing. The first thing I searched was "p0rn" bc everyone in ELEMENTARY school was talking about it for some reason in really vague ways so I didn't actually know what they were talking about. When I asked, they said look it up. When I said I don't have internet, well, oh well! We aren't explaining it to you! I found gore videos, beheading, lots of p0rn, access to s3xually charged interactions with strangers on games like IMVU. If I have kids, they aren't getting internet access for a while. Maybe I'll let them have a phone once they're old enough to start going to friends houses so they can call me but I'll make sure I can see what they're doing on it. I know I hated when my mom would want to see what was on my phone, but it's so dangerous not to check. But kids also shouldn't feel scared about what their parents might find and know that if there is something inappropriate on there, it isn't really their fault. It's so easy to get sucked into stuff you have no business being a part of. I think I'll just have like, an xbox or wii with offline games that my kid can play at home in the living room where they can be monitored. I get that parents have lives apart from their children, but I also don't think it's that hard to avoid letting the internet raise them.
I get what you're saying, but you can't monitor every step a human makes. So there should be safety measures in place, IE: ID scans, electronic signatures, etc!

If a parent is incapable of monitoring their kids online access, they should t give their kids online access. Don’t act like parents are in the room, the majority of the time parents leave the room while kids are online. It’s always the same excuse of “not my kid” yes your kid!!

Well most if not all smartphones are manufactured in china, they arent worried about that as a privacy issue though. America already buys and sells all of our "data" though. Its about political control and the control of the spread of information imo. The world has never been able to communicate with eachother in the way we can now, I think the world governments wouldn't like that too much bc its harder to get away with things, we're all watching and judging them now.

Ed Marky said that the problem with the government was "generational" and that in order to get people to vote the way they want is to fix the "tik tok problem" they don't want us to have free information. My point is IF china wanted to "spy" on us and "take all of our data" dont you think they would just install that technology into smartphones secretly during manufacturing? Also the two arent really unrelated at all..? If america was so concerned about them potentially gaining access to americans private data from our devices through apps or whatever, why would we then allow those devices to be put together in the same country the government is worried about having our data stolen from, from those smartphones they produce? Im saying hypothetically if they wanted our info they would have it by any means necessary at this point. We have to worry more about our own government with our personal information ngl.

Tiktok belongs to Bytedance, a Chinese company. The reason why it's different from facebook is because any company or person in China is legally obliged to hand their data to the Chinese Government.
They would rather ban an app then make sure kids are actually safe in school from bullying and other problems

As an American, I am also confused as to why we're focusing on banning TikTok and not taking care of our country. (I don't really use tiktok besides to view the occasional video someone sends to me.) I get that TikTok isn't the best, and that there are issues but this is RIDICULOUS. And I seriously feel like them saying they must sell to an approved company is a really slippery slope. Not to mention all the people who's livelihoods are going to be affected. I don't like this AT ALL.

As an American, I really don't understand why Tiktok is the big deal instead of everything else going on. Housing is impossible to afford, people can't afford food, it's damn near impossible to find jobs, and gun violence is out of control.
I genuinely hate this country, and if I could afford to leave - I would. Anyone who thinks this is "the greatest country on Earth" is delusional.
those things are extremely complex issues and are incredibly difficult to solve especially in an instant. banning an app is very quick and easy to do especially if they believe it compromises the interests of a country. tiktok isn't just "sharing data" like any other app. please watch in depth videos about it and no disrespect to drama kween but, somebody who has more than a rudimentary understanding of law, politics and business ethics.

As a European when I first heard of this I thought “wow they actually care about all the dangers it imposes on children (their mental health, creativity, concentration, …)” but then I heard their reasonings and it’s so ridiculous
it does lmao. i had tiktok and stuff for a few years, and it so badly impacted me in many ways. ive also noticed i have better memory than my 2 friends that use tiktok, might just be genes, but who knows..my attention span has also increased since i deleted it

Tiktok is mostly a source of MISinformation. Anyone can upload a video from one part of the world, claim it's from another part of the world, and become viral. And millions of people don't even question the credibility of those

6:08 I agree with this a lot. They should focus more on kids being killed at school rather than social media. For example, there was a nonbinary kid named Nex who got beat up at school and literally bullied to death and they only dismissed that with a "oh i guess we'll suspend the bullies for a little bit whatever" but they're more worried about a social media platform. They tell us "get off those screens" but they're more focused on social media than we are. I think it's *them* that needs to turn off *their* screens and take a look around them because I think an *app* is WAY less important than kids getting killed in school.
Life is tough you can't expect them to always be there and besides they need to stand up for themselves no matter the cost or way.

I'm not American but I find banning TikTok very ridiculous, there are more important things to care about instead of an app.

As someone who sometimes uses TikTok I only interact with good contents and if I find a video I don't like on my fyp I just click on "Don't show this content", it's very simple
The TikTok ban is because of what everyone agreed to in the terms and conditions please look this up further in depth from non influencers. TikTok has special tracking data that can track everything you do once your out of the app also they have access to every picture you’ve taken so hopefully you haven’t done so but usually everyone has taken a pic of ID or credit card for some reason. Your personal information they got it and you agreed to this exchange of information once you signed up. Now if a U.S. government official or their family etc has this app and has personal or sensitive information on their phone then the Chinese government also will have access to this. The reason why this is so big in government should make ppl wonder why it’s so big but most just think it’s the us trying to control Americans when it’s definitely not that.
The difference is , tiktok allow and powers those trends , instead of insta , like the publication is hold when reported and asked for plead (even if sometimes it dosent work)

As an American, I’m disgusted by my country. It’s too busy focusing on things that don’t matter to do anything about the things that do matter! I think that if we were to make schools safer, we would need to actually properly address mental health issues. Actually taking care of the young minds and emotions of the students. And that’s just one issue out of many.
Just remember that most of us Americans don't want the ban. I know it looks different from other countries but most of us would prefer our government deal with guns/universal healthcare etc etc etc.....but we have very very little power. Our government is run by the elderly (nothing against the elderly but these ones definitely don't understand what's going on) that are owned by big corporations. Its the same with abortion. It's been shown that most Americans are pro abortion, but our government doesn't care. Just please remember this before poopooing everyone here. We've been essentially hostages for a long time and some of us would love to leave because we can see a dangerous dictatorship forming.
Exactly! Big corporations, especially oil and gas, essentially own the US, and they line the pockets of every politician, so whatever is decided is in their favor, not the people's. "Every vote counts" only applies to the rich and those lobbying. If you can't afford to buy someone in power's support, your vote and voice mean next to nothing. After all, look at the recent fiasco at Colombia university, where students were arrested for protesting peacefully in a designated area FOR protesting. Those in power do not see the greater population as anything more than a means to make more money for themselves.

My main question is if the ban actually happens, what’s going to stop people from using one of the countless VPNs to access it from “another country”
@@trvnscended that’s so untrue, you just pulled that $ and statement entirely out of nowhere. If the ban does happen, it’ll take at least 9 months to a year before anything happens, they can’t stop people from using a VPN and it’s untraceable due to it having its own IP address. Also the only thing that would happen is it would be removed from the App Store meaning it’ll still be on your phone if you have it, but it won’t be able to receive program updates. Get educated

The worst that’ll happen is it get removed from the App Stores and tiktok won’t be able to send out software updates. Any device that already has it will still have it, there’s no way to delete it from everyone’s phone. Won’t need a VPN to access it from a device that already has it installed, but if you wanna use a PC you’ll need it.

It’s because we are on the brink of war. A lot of people really don’t realize how tense the situation actually is. I live in Japan and it’s very very bad right now. Everytime they test the sirens I almost throw up out of fear. One day there will be air strikes. To people who live in this region of the world the threat is real. TikTok is like a minuscule part of the issue that the media is obsessing over to distract people from what is actually going on.

I used to have a TikTok account (in like 2022), I barely posted on there and I didn’t really stick to one particular theme on what to post (I apologise if the grammar is bad). So I basically treated it like a RUclips short’s channel (which it kind of is/was). Then one day I decided to uninstall the app (but it wasn’t because of some of the things going on there) it was because it was the only app I dared sacrifice so that I could reinstall Snapchat and make a new account since I forgot my password to my previous account.

I despise tiktok to be honest It honestly went downhill during and after the pandemic but that's the vast majority of tiktok not everyone but most of them are questionable, creepy and just downright effed up like tiktok despite being the bane of my existence it shouldn't be banned but tiktok needs to do something about the harmful videos on its platform and I really don't think tiktok should be the BEST nor the FIRST place to look to twoards advice however cuz honestly...it's bad but then again what would ANYONE gain by banning it?

It’s already banned in China and India - and banned for installs on government devices within 16 countries. On paper it’s a red flag hinting malware and I bet governments know more than the citizens about this too. So why trust it?

I think tiktok is genuinely so terrible for us, as an educator. But I also don't think banning tik tok means we don't have other priorities. THAT BEING SAID I really do agree we have other things we need to do first. As a trans man, there are A LOT OF THINGS I CAN THINK OF that we can maybe do before banning tik tok. I deleted the app YEARS ago and it has helped me realize how little I was thinking for myself, and I pride myself in being a critical thinker. And I was like 16 when I deleted it, can you imagine the 12 year olds literally WASTING their childhoods being insecure over what aesthetic they are. Like actually what the fck. Having recovered from ED, being a trans person, an educator, there are so many personal examples let alone just generally applicable things that I find so harmful as just a GENUINE STANDARD on tiktok. As in that is WHAT it DOES. It doesn't mean there aren't other priorities, and I maybe don't think they even understand why tiktok is harmful, but I think EVERYONE could benefit from it going away. Take a deep breath and stop thinking about what other random people in the world are up to. Think about how many influencers exist now and think about the increasing nursing and educator shortage. What are we doing? This would seriously benefit our independent thought and I sincerely believe so. anyway.

Honestly, social media is toxic TikTok Instagram, all of them. People don’t connect the same way they used to people are obsessed with social media with clout and with fame. People are so out of touch with reality, and what’s really going on in the world that they can’t even stand the thought of not being able to numb their mind all day, watching mindless videos, and not actually face reality. I got rid of TikTok a long time ago and a lot of my other social media and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for my mental health.

I never used tiktok but I also didn't expect for such a ban to even happen in a country like this, I mean living in Russia I'm used to the government blocking everything and anything disagreeing with the current political narrative but to see it happen somewhere progressive and where free speech is one of the core values is just weird to me
I don't think such bans are a good thing, it's useless and it can ruin people's livelihoods, plus people will seek an alternative now and it's probably gonna flood other platforms with tons of bad lazily produced content as if there isn't enough already
I honestly just use Tiktok for cosplays, because that’s what Tiktok mostly was throughout its run (considering it may be ending) - cosplayers sharing their outfits. With that is also where a lot of my concern comes from … what will happen to the cosplayers? RUclips shorts isn’t as good at pushing out cosplay content, Instagram reels is a bit better with content variety but it is near IMPOSSIBLE to get a following on there unless you are someone who has a larger following on another platform, or the algorithm just so happens to be in your favor that day.
My problem with Tik Tok is the monitoring. It’s bloody awful. I’ve seen borderline adult content and graphic violence on there, as well as many disturbing lives. I have an account on Tik Tok and I have been sent at least three SA threats and too many death threats just for posting about my hobbies- this stress plus the stress of school really gotten to me. My accounts have been banned for no reason at all, but literal creeps somehow have their accounts up? In a lot of comments people have used uncensored language and I don’t understand how it didn’t get flagged up in Tik tok’s servers?
