  • In this video series we are going (or at least try) to make our own version of the CUBLI, based on Arduino.
Original CUBLI video: • The Cubli: a cube that...
In this first part we will make a test bench to test the balancing capabilities of the system in only 1 degree of freedom.

So I just tried to make this balance with this motor and I don't think it is possible. The motor is a very high rpm (1000KV) and low torque motor (torque is much more important for this application). It takes this motor a few seconds(!) to change direction, which I think is because it is a sensorless brushless motor. This means it will just fall over when you try to tell it to change directions. Also you likely need a way to measure the angular velocity of the wheel, eg an encoder, so you can account for that in your control algorithm. There's a few other youtube videos with working examples.

Yeah don't bother with this guy. He probably saw the Cubli video and thought "I can make that" but when he actually tried it he found out it was too difficult and stopped (hence no updates in over a year...)

I have done sucesfully similar project. You can check out here ruclips.net/video/8RsnoAd-GSI/видео.html. For your problem with motor i recommend using pmsm motor, or cheaper and easier - dc motor. We are controlling the torque here, and in dc motors torque is directly related to current (with torque constant specific to the motor), so by controlling the current you can control the torque.
