It can't get any sadder than this... right? RIGHT?! I'm in for an emotional rollercoaster in this saga, I can feel it!
Sure bestie, only up from here!
Yes I totally didn't cry... or get angry... or cheer...
it's honestly incredible how they had basically one song to sell penelope as a woman you would burn down half the mediterranean to return to and they ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT. like damn ody, i get it, i would let eurylochus get smited by zeus for a chance to see her again too.
This Saga’s gonna make you cry.
It's going to make *we* cry.
Its gonna make *us* cry
Its an instant cry for me too
It has already made me cry so many times.
Simple fact of the world. Fire burns, water flows, Ithaca saga makes people cry.
"This is the saddest song", she said...
Oh boy, let's see her react to song 40...
Song 39 also.
Yeah she was getting terrified during this song...shes not ready for the next two songs lol
@@UltimateInnerSpirit right?
@@adamharith782 that one too!
I immediately laughed when she said that, song 39 and 40, can’t wait until she reacts to them
Modern archers with modern bows HAVE completed the 12 axes challenge but it would take a MASTER archer in those days. Plus no one else can string Ody's bow (in some legends because there is a trick to it, in others because it requires incredible strength, or both).
There are some theories due to the way the bow is described that it could have been an early composite bow, which is strung in a different way from the type of bow most people would have been used to at the time. Composite bows would have been very uncommon during that time period, so it's possible that the suitors had never even *seen* one, much less strung one.
@@EpicNerdsWithCameras I heard that it was a recurve bow, either way the trick was to string the bow in reverse.
@@xSaerandipity it is either Recurve or Reflex, the problem is we can't know for certain because descriptions are... sparse. We know this: It was "palintonos" which means roughly bent backwards. We don't know how much it bent that way or in what way it did so. Regardless it was a rare kind of bow for the area and these young idiots (most of the suitors at this point were in their 20s lore wise) had likely never seen one let alone had any idea how to string one (since both require more than simple strength regardless of possible enchantments from Athena).
@@xSaerandipity Got my terms a bit mixed up. Although it's worth noting that recurve bows can be composite bows, as the former refers to the style of bow, while the latter refers to the materials used to make the bow.
Ody's bow is called a "palintonos", which is "a composite bow that's bent backwards" (I've seen images and it looks very unlike most bows) and it takes a lot of strength to string.
So, the challenge is: 1) know how to string this bow, 2) have the strength to string, and 3) shoot through 12 axes cleanly.
Penelope stacked the deck in such a way that it would be hard for anyone to do it, but also was something that she knew her husband could do because she is amazing and is a match for Ody in the intelligent/cunning department.
It's actually wild that we are seeing your reaction to this animatic before Casper and Mortuis's reaction now that I think about it
😱 oh yeah!
"Give me a good love story"

Anna Lea truly is a queen, flawless casting!
So the "waiting" motif is one we have heard before but this is the first time Penelope is associated with it. It has previously been sung by Anticlea (Odysseus's mom.)
I'm still gutted every time I hear it from either of them!
Iirc, the earliest iteration of it actually is associated with Penelope, all the way back in Full Speed Ahead
🎶 Ithaca’s waiting
🎶 My kingdom is waiting
🎶 Penelope’s *WAITING*
🎶 For me
@ I have no ear for music I never noticed if that was the same progression! That's cool
@@sb-lx2dtThat’s true, but it isn’t the full waiting motif which we first heard in The Underworld where it’s the long stretched and high-pitched “Waaaaitiiiiings” x). Get why you said that tho
I didn't think about it much until I saw this comment, but playing back Odysseus singing "waiting" those three times, the one sung with Penelope sounds like a shorter version of what gets established by Underworld.
Cuz like the one his mom sings has "WAI" higher than "ting" so it's like WAI~ting...
And from what I can tell at least from Odysseus's singing:
"Ithica's waiTING~
My kingdom is waiTING~
Penelope's WAI~ting for mee~"
If that makes sense in text haha
The voice behind Penelope, Anna Lea is so talented! Crazy she’s only 20! Also Jen I don’t think anyone would be upset if you decided to double upload 👀😆
Wait, ANNA IS 20??? I'M OLDER THAN HER??? HOW?MM
@ ikk I’m older as well! Her bio on TikTok says 20!
I think she was 17 when she was cast as Penelope ❤
@ you might be right considering the timeframe of epics production. Which makes it even crazier lol
"I don't think my heart can do this." oh, just wait, it gets better
10:59
Did you know that Odysseus was disguised as a beggar when he entered the palace but was recognozed by a servant because he had a unique scar on his leg?
The scar from the fight with Athena's boar
Ohhhh! That information definitely would have helped me in the next song 🙈
Oh my goodness I didnt catch that in the animatic.
Oh boi, better get a whole box of tissues for the second half of this saga xD
Just for some added context (even though I suppose others comments might have it). During the “waiting” in this animatic, they show Argos, Odysseus’ dog, and the spirit of his Mother again. Those two plus Penelope had waited since he left for war. His mother died waiting, Argos is barely holding on to life waiting for his master, and Penelope may be all that is left. (Yes, I know Telemachus is waiting too, but he hadn’t yet known his father before the war).
Some version said that Athena enchanted the bow so nobody else can use it (Telemachus took like 3 or 4 tries and almost got it). Some people thinks it's some sort of recurve bow or smth but basically the challenge all boils down to 3 things:
1. The knowledge of the technique to even string the bow
2. The skill to aim accurately into the axe heads
3. The strength required to fully draw the bow and shoot through all 12 of those axe heads
The fact that the suitor couldnt even pass the first step is funny af. They couldn't even string the bow 😂😂
The recurve bow part is from the term used for it in the Greek “palintonos” which translates as bent or curved backwards bow, which was the Ancient Greek term for a recurve.
When not strung, unlike standard bows which were straightish staves, it would form an almost horseshoe shape and the bow arms would need to be flexed all the way across the body of the bow to string it, which wouldn’t be possible with the standard bow stringing technique.
18:40 btw the reason why the dog is there is because while it doesn’t say it in epic the musical Odysseus does have a dog in the original story that also waited for him❤
And we don't talk about how the dog (Argos) immediately died after reuniting with Ody in the Odyssey
The most challenging thing about the Challenge that Penelope arranged is shooting through the axes, because arrows fly in an arc. This means that you must have incredible strength and precision and an incredibly powerful bow to shoot an arrow with enough speed that it flies straight for long enough to fly through 12 equally spaced axes. This would be a similar feat to shooting a barely visible target a great distance away and hitting the bullseye. It’s very impressive, and something that Odysseus was famous for accomplishing in his youth.
Penelope’s Challenge was basically “prove you are as good an archer as my Odysseus, and you can be king.” She knew it was nearly impossible because only Odysseus had done it before.
6:53 In some iterations, the maids who serve Penelope want her to move on. The maid peeking in through the door goes off to tell the suitors what she’s _actually_ been doing.
Penelope's challenge is actually much more cunning than initially appears. Its commonly thought that Odysseus used a special type of recurve bow (cant remember the greek name, something like Palimos), which would have been a really rare style in greece at that time. Recurve bows have a special way of stringing them that would not be known to the suitors, so in reality they have 3 challenges in one: Have the strength to string the bow, the intelligence to figure out the technique, and the skill to shoot it through the axes. If the suitor didn't have all 3, then he wasn't even worth consideration.
(Also, being pedantic, its the hole where the handle goes into the axe, with the wood handle taken out, so a weird oblong hole that would be difficult to shoot through one of, let alone 12. Not sure why most interpretations invent new holes on the axes to shoot through, its already got a hole)
The tree is where Penelope and Odysseys met and so it became the bed that they sleep in, as well as what the palace was built around, them in the middle of it all as king and queen. It'll slightly come up in the last song with the bed! It's a symbol that their love will never die
I can always count on you to cry as much as I do!!! 😂❤
😂😭
"I'd rather die than grow old without the best of you!" - Yup, she loves her husband just as much as he loves her
So no one could sting Ody’s now because it is a bow called a palintonos, which is Greek for "bent or stretched backwards". So even if they could string it by some miracle it would then take 200lbs to pull the string back.
Because you were asking about the tree and sadly Jorge doesn't go too deep into detail about it. But in the actual Odyssey, Penelope Odysseus meet and fall in love at an olive tree that Odysseus later builds their wedding bed into and eventually the entire Palace of Ithaca around
It's not in deep detail, sure, but there was the whole cut song about the Olive Tree that eventually got replaced because Jorge wanted a more cathartic feeling from it
@Arkraiden yeah I've watched why he cut olive tree and I don't disagree it made for a better emotional song but it does seem to confuse people who don't know the mythology
Honestly, this is my favorite song of the Ithaca Saga. Penelope’s VA absolutely kills this track and immediately makes it obvious why Ody is so loyal to this woman. She’s amazing.
Anna Lea has my favorite voice in all of Epic. I saw her audition and knew it. The way she sings is so catchy to me. you explain it better than me. lol
YES! You did my FAVORITE Challenge animatic! 😭Its so good
No it's not the saddest. It gets worse lol.
New viewer here and love your notes on everything. Gonna keep watching the rest of this series as you put it out.
Truly a beautiful animatic and Penelope voice is just pure beauty.
The saddest part is Argos, Odysseus’ hunting dog dies after seeing him one last time but Odysseus couldn’t acknowledge him as he was disguised.
3:55 close, but not quite. Penelope’s instrument is a viola.
There are two motifs you might have recognized beyond the normal calls to Penelope.
The "waiting, waiting" is a recall to Anticlea in "Underworld" and later at the end of "Get in the water"
Another one is the suitors' "time is fleeting it's running out" wich is from the cut song "Man of the House" wich is also referenced in "Legendary" with the suitors chant of "Where is he, where is he, where is the man who'll take you to wife"
Really, this saga is gonna make you feel the full range of emotions. Happy, angry, sad, relieved, etc.
Just as a note, in some versions of the story, where the axes are set up, if anyone were to complete the challenge the arrow would hit Penelope. That way if any if the suitors did manage to complete the challenge they would kill her.
16:26 oh honey. It's nowhere near the saddest
edited the first part coz apparently I was wrong about it being a version of the odyssey
15:00 It's a popular hc for Epic that Penelope stands at the end of the axes so in the off chance anyone really was able to string the bow and shoot through the holes, they wouldn't be able to take her as his queen bc she'd be killed by the arrow. Not sure if that's what Jorge had in mind when he was composing the lyrics, but it does give some sort of new meaning to "I'd rather die than grow old without the best of you". The best to her was only Odysseus, anyone else was subpar, so she'd rather die. It's my favorite hc coz it just gives that extra flavor text that she's THAT loyal that she'd rather follow Ody in death
18:57 The tree is actually their bed! One of the most romantic gestures Ody was known for was that there was this olive tree he and Penelope really liked, and when they got married, he carved the tree into their wedding bed and built their palace around it. But the special thing about this bed is that the tree it was carved from is still alive, the roots are still attached to the ground and it still grows leaves. It's an incredibly romantic metaphor of lasting love and devotion to your partner
19:29 Another fun fact bc while the dog was featured in the official Legendary animatic, he's never been brought up in the songs (and you need to cry more lol). That's Ody's beloved pet Argos, and he's waited for Ody for exactly as long as his family has. He's an extremely loyal dog who waited at the gates of the palace every day in case Ody comes back. I believe he was Ody's childhood dog? Or at least a little older than Telemachus. Yeah the entire family, even their pet, is loyal af lol
Pretty sure Penelope sitting at the end of the axes is just a popular headcanon in the fandom, it’s never been in any of the translations of the Odyssey I’ve read
@@boowind4432 you’re absolutely correct in this.
Don't forget the short clip with the scar. One of the servants recognized Odysseus because he had a scar on his leg.
@@boowind4432 I have no idea where it even came from, I’ve searched every source I can find and there is absolutely no myth or retelling where the “suicidal Penelope” head canon is even remotely true
@@zjmiller6627 yeah I always hear "it's in several iterations," "in different versions," etc etc, in what book or story is this the case because I also have looked it up, it's nowhere 😭😭 it's a good theory though for Epic
oh man your heart will break into 183927398493 piece just like the rest of us
Lucky mine broke into 183927398494 pieces
Literally lost it at your reaction to Penelopes incredible vocal jumps because I did the same, just 😮 it's the exact reason I watch people react to this song. It's so incredible, there's something about it that shows how conflicted her emotions are but also how skilled she is as an individual, it just immediately reflects someone going through a lot who has a lot of self control, but those emotions just keep peaking through. So happy to find your channel ❤
Hi, this tidbit about Penelope sitting at the end of the axes that you’re gonna see in these comments is actually a very recent fabrication/headcanon/misunderstanding of the lyrics, taking the metaphorical soliloquy of Penelope’s longing for Odysseus, “I’d Rather die than grow old without the best of you” as literal. No, she did not sit or stand at the end of the axes in case one of the suitors was able to string the bow and made the shot. She’s cunning and resilient, and wouldn’t do something so stupid. Furthermore, she loves her family, and in the Odyssey, Telemachus is actually the first person who gives stringing the bow a try. Furthermore, the suitors are vile and morally bankrupt but they’re certainly not idiots, they would be able to figure out pretty quickly that Penelope was trying to get herself killed if she was standing at the end of the axes that the Suitors were instructed to shoot through. Just clearing some misinformation, love your content.
It's the 'Calypso's curse' of the Ithaca Saga
@nudgificator real and true
@@nudgificator RIGHT?? While there have been several different cases of "Did you know that in _the original,_ *[Insert misinformation here]* " throughout the time EPIC has been coming out, these two cases specifically have made me just... so mad.

Unfortunately it only just starts here. I fully sobbed I was ✨unwell✨ at the end
The bow in and of itself was pending on the version made by Hercules or a gift from a foreign county that needed specific way to string in both versions how ever it did have a really high draw strength, making it impossible to string let alone fire straight
I will say this is one of my favorite sagas and it was like Jay put all these bangers in it. If you get a chance you should do the livestream afterwards

Pls do Orange’s animatic for Hold Them Down!
Gotta wake up at 5:30 for school but this is more important.
Probably my 20th time hearing this song e still crying like crazy…
In my head, every time at the beginning when she sings "Though I never thought that I'd resort to this, just know I'll be here.." I always think the next line should be Odysseus to rhyme with 'this' but we don't. Instead we get that lovely pregnant pause before jumping into the next line and its just such good writing!
You should do these next two songs together.
Great vid keep up the great work!
Yeah, The Challenge is definitely in my top 5 favorites of the entire show. Penelope's voice is just so RICH and warm and beautiful and she does so good at conveying her emotions through it. Also love seeing you get emotional :') Can't wait for the next songs >:D
I haven’t seen another comment explaining it so I will!
Odysseus’ bow is occasionally referred to as a recurve bow (varies from source to source). Visually, it looks different to how a ‘normal’ bow looks (Gwendy has animated it like this in her animatic but understandable if you want to save hers for a different video).
Essentially, the limbs of the bow are extremely curved ‘backwards’. A recurve bow only looks ‘normal’ once it is strung. Unstrung, it looks like it was curved inwards. You need a lot of strength to bend the limbs ‘backwards’ and then string it.
Ody was given his bow by a friend who also showed him how to string it. Plus, Ody is really strong so he has no problem with it. This is why the suitors wouldn’t be able to string it by themselves. Also, shooting through 12 axes would require a lot of precision. With our without the recurve bow, I’m sure that would be hard.
Thank you for reading my rant 🥰
Just got into your videos but I love all your insight! Can't wait for you to check out the rest of this saga! Itll wreck you 😫 (emotionally) so hold on
I keep rewatching this. Its so good.
Penelope's challenge is actually pretty much impossible. The bow Odysseus used was a very uncommon type of bow (I forget what it's called) that pretty much looked inverted when unstrung, and had to be bent back with nearly inhuman force (I think about 350 pounds if I remember correctly) AND required a special trick to string it. So aside from having to hit a nearly impossible shot that they weren't skilled enough to make, the suitors couldn't even string the bow because they lacked both the strength and the knowledge to do so. Only Odysseus himself could do it (and Telemachus in some versions), so completing the challenge would be how Ody proves his identity when he returns home. In some versions the bow was even enchanted by Athena so that even if the suitors had the strength to string the bow they still wouldn't be able to, but I think in Epic specifically they just are not strong enough. This challenge, as well as the trick with the shroud, shows how smart and cunning Penelope is, to the point that her mind rivals that of Odysseus, which is really why he fell in love with her to begin with. I love the way Jorge wrote her in this song!
Omg Jennnn, your hair looks GORGEOUS!!!!!!
16:27 Oh you sweet summer child
Penelody, the couple soon to be reunited. She’s been waiting so long….
You’ll need a whole box of tissues for the second half of the saga 😂😅❤

Jen you should totally check out the image Jorge used in the "Waiting (7x)" part in the oficial livestream, ITS BEAUTIFULL, it shows her singing while the (absurd amount btw) suitors call out for her

Ahw sweetheart, this is nowhere near the saddest. You're going to cry both from joy and sorrow ❤❤❤
(Ps. I can't wait for song 38 abd 39 especially for certain things there!!)
Someone get this woman a box of tissues STAT!!!!
The sheer disgust on Penelope's face when she explained the rules. She despises most of those suitors. Fun fact. She had a favorite amongst them
You're gonna need a couple more tissues for the last 4 songs
Amazing analysis as always. also love the outfit
For the axe challenge, I always imagined it like a hardcore version of the "shoot an arrow off of someone's head" challenge, except the axe blades are swinging like a pendulum Tomb raider trap, with Penelope sitting at the end below the target.
I always picture just the axe heads stuck into a long table and the suitors having to shoot through the eye of the axes (the part where the handle normally goes), which seems more plausible as a challenge than having axes with a hole in the blades or a ring on the knob.
Just so you know the reason that was her challenge was because she knew that Odysseus is the only one who could do it :D ALSO BRING TISSUES FOR HOLD THEN DOWN AND WILL YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH ME AGAIN 🥲
i can already see your reaction to Hold Them Down
Youre gonna have to hold us down for the next one

yaaaayy.... please don't hold us down too long for next song
Man we are already here?! 😭
I love this musical so much 😢❤❤❤
Can’t wait for the rest 😩
IM SO EXCITED TOR YOU TO LISTEN TO THIS SAGA
The last song make me cry everytime so I don’t blame you.
Real quick, I just wanted to say, the “Waiting” motif isn’t Penelope’s, it was Anticlea’s (Odysseus’ mom) who died while he was fighting a war, now that she is no longer there, she takes the job of “Waiting” for Ody :)
GWendy also has a great animatic for “the challenge”
You grabbing some toilet roll tissues is so very relatable 😂
😂😂
No one ever mentions the Bonnie and Clyde musical. Which is a shame cause it's a masterpiece.
Love it!!
Sirens, in most mythos, have a sort of telepathic ability to know how to imitate your loved ones, or just those that you find attractive or alluring in general. So it makes sense that the Siren would have been able to mimic Penelope to a scarily accurate degree. Remember, Ody specifically called out the Siren NOT on being a poor imitation of his wife, but on getting details about him wrong.
So the real challenge there is stringing the bow, i don't remember the full lore behind it, but the bow is extremely hard to string and only Odysseus knows how to do it, so she knows none of the other suitors would be able to
Along with what others have said about it being a very unusual bow (that only Odysseus knew how to string), but shooting through the axes is a feat ONLY Odysseus has been able to accomplish.
Might I suggest something for if you do look at more The Challenge animatics? I'd say VirusAP's version is quite good. I really like the way they draw Penelope and, more importantly, they get the bow right.
A lot of the animatics i've seen have the bows looking like normal, just without a string, which is not what an unstrung recurve bow should look like. VirusAP (and also one other I've seen, though I can't remember who off the top of my head) draw not only a proper un-strung bow, they draw the specific type of bow Odysseus was said to have, which has a particularly pronounced shape when un-strung. It seems like a small thing, but I feel like it really adds to the sense of the challenge's difficulty. I saw the bow in that animatic and immediately understood why so many ostensibly strong men had so much trouble stringing it.
I just heard that song from Bonnie and Clyde the other day. It flopped on Broadway but saw success on the West End.
Oh God..... Next up is hold them down.... God help Jen cause no human would be able to
