I think the reason Canute wants to save the Vikings above all others is because in his view they are "furthest from love". And if he can't save those furthest from love, how will he ever be able to save EVERYONE in his paradise? So they've gotta come first. And I tend to see the whole stopping the waves scene as him showing just how powerless he is in the grand scheme of things. A king is powerful, but is not a force of nature. So in his perspective he has to achieve his goal by any means necessary due to his powerlessness, as only God can command the waves.
You can bet Drott wanted to stop throwing punches way before one hundred, but that's what they had agreed on, and he couldn't disrespect Thorfinn by giving up early.
After the 32nd punch where thorfinn yells at him to get it over with and hurry up, you can see it in Drotts eyes. That he sees that hitting a defenseless man is just stupid and that he realizes he has to endure doing it 68 more times. I'm pretty sure that most people would be able to throw 100 punches and not fall over afterwards, especially a man with "bear killer" as his title. his guilt made each punch more taxing on his body, much more than hitting a boxing bag would.
@@Nonco-1 well it seems he was going for a kill punch every shot too so definitely exhausted himself much faster. when ppl box or practice with a punching bag, they dont go for these power shots becaue that wud be inefficient. but his resolve was definitely shaken after that speech. idk if its guilt but more respect and awe at Thorfinns resolve

There was also a real king Canute, and even a real Thorkell the Tall. I think Askaladd is a danish folktale. Kind of like Cinderella 'girl covered in cinders' Askaladd ' boy covered in ash'. Each folktale was meant to teach the youth of those days what virtues they needed to thrive. But remember. These people lived a thousand years ago. We know very little about them outside of their names appearing in a few different surviving writings. It's unlikely that Canute and Thorfinn ever crossed paths. But some things are there. Canute was actually christian. And we was an absolute savage as far as kingship goes. So I guess we know he survives season two lol

Seeing Thorfinn finally say "I have no enemies" is the greatest moment of the show for me. That music how how hard they hid that, its what both seasons entirely built this for. I was shaking even watching the reactiobn here, and both the sub and the dub absolutely nail it. That is the anime moment of the year, and its impact is going to last a very long time.
Although the methods are different, Canute and Thorfinn wants to find a paradise on Earth, not the one that God's promised in the Heavens with everlasting life. That's basically it.
