Heartbreaking. I found the photos of my family's trip to White Island in 2011, and realised that we had the same tour guide. My mum recalls him as a very kind man, that enjoyed a good laugh. Thinking back now, I don't think we realised the extent of the risks. May he rest in peace.

Tragic. Anyone who visits this island is obviously rolling the dice, but anyone offering tours or promoting them is irresponsible at best and if you take someone there you should be held liable. The sulphuric acid in the air probably permanently damaged your lungs.
A false sence of security has formed because nobody died for the previous 100 years. I don't think tour operators should be blamed. No one involved wants this to happen.

Sadly Kelsie the blond female guide in this video is in an induced coma very badly burned in hospital , my heart goes out to her family and friends at this time . I recommend that if you go on one of these tours you say some sort of goodbye to your loved ones , this place should not be a tourist destination full stop .

The most recent update I can find has a reduction in the number believed to have been on the island down from 100 to about 50 persons. About 20 may be seen in images taken one minute prior who were actually in the crater at the time and place of eruption.
It's a beautiful island, but what is a safe distance from an active volcano many are asking that question. Considering they raised the level up and still took people out to the island knowing it had been more active than weeks before. Now people are dead because of failure to heed warnings. Very sad when money is more important than people's lives are.
It was Hayden Marshall-Inman. He was actually talking about an ash eruption happened in September that year (1:45) that made him quite nervous. Who would have thought it was just a preview of the worst possible thing to befall on him?

The circumstances of this eruption were a freak accident - a combination of factors that meant there was no warning. The island is called "WHAKAARI" Maori legend of "PUTAUAKI" AND "TARAWERA". putauaki left his wife tarawera to go to white island who he loved. Maori legend is mountains can move once but only at night, As putauaki was heading towards white island he noticed his son following him, he tried to walk him back to tarawera but the sun came up and they froze, tarawera noticed they were gone and she got angry and erupted, white island still cries for her love that's why she is active. Yes I know this cannot happen but that's our legend.

What they didn’t know is volcanoes can be sudden ‘Jumpscares’. Eruptions that isn’t seen or unpredictable but it happens. They’re doing those tours for money. It’s cash or the country will not have interesting places for the world.

I’m shocked that the guide is quoting geology info but left out that theres a difference between an active dormant volcano (which everyone assumed was the case here) and an actively erupting volcano (which is actually the case). But the guide is quoting geology data meaning they were very aware of the dire warnings being issued by geologists which raises the concern of purposeful neglect for financial gain...this is so sad.

Anytime you are close to an active volcano you are at risk. Whether it is this island or Mt. St. Helens or Kilauea being close involves risk. I have experienced the ash fall when St. Helens erupted and hiked out to the lava flows of Kilauea. You have to have respect for nature.

By the sounds of things it was a quick violent explosion. Camera photos 11 minutes before show no panic. So if they did know it was coming that would have been the worst part. The shock wave will kill you before the heat gets you takes alot of force to throw that much shit out
Scott F part of a volcanic eruption includes what is known as a lateral blast (a horizontal explosion that happens when the magma and debris are pushed out of a fissure under an enormous amount of pressure) which is what is most likely to have killed these people, not the ash which was blasted vertically up into the air. These tourists really should not have been allowed to visit White Island in the first place (an active volcano, not an island as such). What ludicrous tour operator would take tourists to walk around the caldera of an active volcano in the middle of the ocean, 80 minutes off the coast? I truly feel for the families of the innocent people who have been killed or injured, it was a tragedy waiting to happen. I know a little bit about volcanoes having studied geology at university and have been to Rotorua in New Zealand to see the volcanic activity there. The power that is nature is amazing and taken for granted. Volcanoes are not tourist attractions or fun parks.....a lesson that hopefully will be learnt now, albeit in a tragic way

It's an amazing place White Island its beauty yet scary force not to be reckoned with, one learns to accept nature when you live in the area and respect that it gives life and takes life. Drain the ocean and its 1.6km high, the part above water is 361m It's a very active volcano. The part above the sea is only a few thousand years old nothing in geological terms.
Your tour guide is my brother’s friend and she was on the volcano when it erupted and she is in hospital with 45% burns the eruption that happened last year killed 17 people she is safe

And dig hot pools at the beach at Hot Water Beach, above a shallow magma chamber. We live on an active subduction zone of two tectonic plates. If its not a volcano zone, it's a earthquake zone. Risk mitigation is carried out but sometimes we lose the gamble.
It's been Level 2 for literally ageeeeesssssss, Geonet (earthquake,volcano site) gives regular updates, it's been up and down for a couple of months now with the lake crater having high water levels etc but it was still safe to visit. The eruption was obviously out of the blue just like an earthquake with no actual warnings being able to be given hence why people were still on the island when it happened. The last major eruption was in 1914 and then a minor eruption in 2016 with just lots of cloud/a bit of ash coming out of it but otherwise it looked like a normal day.
@David miorgan New Zealand is not America, two completely different countries, with completely different governments and laws. So please don't compare two countries that are very different to each other. Also White Island should be banned because what happened could have been worse and there could have been more dead and missing people (that are more likely dead) than there is. White Island is an isolated Island where being evacuated is very difficult, the helicopter was down because of the heat and the rocks that flew from the volcano, while people on the boat suffered burns and breathing difficulties from the hot toxic ash. Now if this was in the country and not on an island then evaluating would be not so difficult as on an island, yes there can be injuries but not so bad as those on White Island. *And what the fuck!* everyone's lives are important. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have taken this same tour without any issues and the operators weren't to know it was going to erupt that day, even with a risk level increase, or they would't have taken tours! The operators didn't want their staff to die, and they had regular safety checks with NZ's work safety departments. It's bad luck, not a bad call bro.

There was a french couple, vulcanologists, that filmed craters in the most dangerous conditions, they took big risks but had a lot of experience, more than anybody probably, and were well equiped. While climbing towards the crater of a volcano in Japan suddenly a piroclastic flow shot down the slope at more than a 100 kmh and killed them, and 40 others, in a matter of seconds, caught everyone by surprise. Very dangerous places..., and these tourists apparently were dressed for a picnic while walking right into the crater...

With the tragedy that has occurred on White Island, it saddens me that this spectacular, must see tour will no longer be available to future adventure seekers. It has been a feature of tourism for 30 years without any major disaster, but like all of New Zealand's tours there is a risk of things going wrong. When I came to live here in 1965, my Family and I were determined to experience all of there was to see and experience. We went Bungee Jumping. Helicopter flight up the Mount Fox Glacier. Ski Plane landing at the top of the Franz Joseph Glacier,. Tours through all the Thermal regions of Rotorua. Caving in Waitomo. Bush trips etc. All of these had a risk element and could have turned in a second from fun to disaster. It didn't stop us and we all have wonderful memories of those times. Having said that, my Family sends its condolences to all those visitor's whose trip of a lifetime turned into a nightmare here in my adopted country. We grieve with you and wish you a speedy recovery . People will always do these risky things because it seems to be part of the Human species and horrible accidents will continue to happen not just in New Zealand, but in all danger spots on this World that are a magnet for the adventurous.

It's a beautiful island, but what is a safe distance from an active volcano many are asking that question. Considering they raised the level up and still took people out to the island knowing it had been more active than weeks before. Now people are dead because of failure to heed warnings. Very sad when money is more important than people's lives are.
The guide in the striped shirt at 1:50 is believed to be one of the guides who died there.
It was Hayden Marshall-Inman. He was actually talking about an ash eruption happened in September that year (1:45) that made him quite nervous. Who would have thought it was just a preview of the worst possible thing to befall on him?
And of course there were warnings issued last November that this volcano was active again!!!!!!

The circumstances of this eruption were a freak accident - a combination of factors that meant there was no warning.
Like climbing Everest, performing this tour came with risks and unfortunately this week things did not go well and there’s been a great tragedy

As putauaki was heading towards white island he noticed his son following him, he tried to walk him back to tarawera but the sun came up and they froze, tarawera noticed they were gone and she got angry and erupted, white island still cries for her love that's why she is active.

What they didn’t know is volcanoes can be sudden ‘Jumpscares’. Eruptions that isn’t seen or unpredictable but it happens. They’re doing those tours for money. It’s cash or the country will not have interesting places for the world.

I’m shocked that the guide is quoting geology info but left out that theres a difference between an active dormant volcano (which everyone assumed was the case here) and an actively erupting volcano (which is actually the case). But the guide is quoting geology data meaning they were very aware of the dire warnings being issued by geologists which raises the concern of purposeful neglect for financial gain...this is so sad.

Anytime you are close to an active volcano you are at risk. Whether it is this island or Mt. St. Helens or Kilauea being close involves risk. I have experienced the ash fall when St. Helens erupted and hiked out to the lava flows of Kilauea. You have to have respect for nature.

Perhaps as well as a gas mask, some sort of fire blanket to give you some protection if the volcano blows up.

By the sounds of things it was a quick violent explosion. Camera photos 11 minutes before show no panic. So if they did know it was coming that would have been the worst part. The shock wave will kill you before the heat gets you takes alot of force to throw that much shit out
Scott F part of a volcanic eruption includes what is known as a lateral blast (a horizontal explosion that happens when the magma and debris are pushed out of a fissure under an enormous amount of pressure) which is what is most likely to have killed these people, not the ash which was blasted vertically up into the air. These tourists really should not have been allowed to visit White Island in the first place (an active volcano, not an island as such). What ludicrous tour operator would take tourists to walk around the caldera of an active volcano in the middle of the ocean, 80 minutes off the coast? I truly feel for the families of the innocent people who have been killed or injured, it was a tragedy waiting to happen. I know a little bit about volcanoes having studied geology at university and have been to Rotorua in New Zealand to see the volcanic activity there. The power that is nature is amazing and taken for granted. Volcanoes are not tourist attractions or fun parks.....a lesson that hopefully will be learnt now, albeit in a tragic way

It's an amazing place White Island its beauty yet scary force not to be reckoned with, one learns to accept nature when you live in the area and respect that it gives life and takes life. Drain the ocean and its 1.6km high, the part above water is 361m It's a very active volcano. The part above the sea is only a few thousand years old nothing in geological terms.
Your tour guide is my brother’s friend and she was on the volcano when it erupted and she is in hospital with 45% burns the eruption that happened last year killed 17 people she is safe

We live on an active subduction zone of two tectonic plates. If its not a volcano zone, it's a earthquake zone.
Risk mitigation is carried out but sometimes we lose the gamble.

It's been Level 2 for literally ageeeeesssssss, Geonet (earthquake,volcano site) gives regular updates, it's been up and down for a couple of months now with the lake crater having high water levels etc but it was still safe to visit. The eruption was obviously out of the blue just like an earthquake with no actual warnings being able to be given hence why people were still on the island when it happened. The last major eruption was in 1914 and then a minor eruption in 2016 with just lots of cloud/a bit of ash coming out of it but otherwise it looked like a normal day.

New Zealand is not America, two completely different countries, with completely different governments and laws. So please don't compare two countries that are very different to each other.
Also White Island should be banned because what happened could have been worse and there could have been more dead and missing people (that are more likely dead) than there is.
White Island is an isolated Island where being evacuated is very difficult, the helicopter was down because of the heat and the rocks that flew from the volcano, while people on the boat suffered burns and breathing difficulties from the hot toxic ash.
Now if this was in the country and not on an island then evaluating would be not so difficult as on an island, yes there can be injuries but not so bad as those on White Island.

It was never a good idea to have taken tourists to White Island in the first place, as was just proved by the people who were killed there.
"Ashes, ashes we all fall down" for since the beginning of man, we have made songs of catastrophes, natural or otherwise, this one is another and should not be overblown. People can choose their own paths, it's called natural selection when it succeeds or fails. As for me, I dont drink at waterholes with known crocs in them.
Such a shame certain opportunists have taken the opportunity to jump all over your video only for the purpose of shaming and critisism. You opportunists who are reading this, Robin and Laura have been providing valuable backpacker content for people in NZ for a couple of years now and this video is a year and a half old.

Robin and Laura I know how you're feeling with this video, I have a certain 2 or 3 videos on my channel which are hated by certain chinese people for similar fickle reasons. They come to my channel, slag off my videos, and then leave... they never watch any other videos. They think they're actually doing something meaningful by doing this.
I suppose look at the bright side, it's given the video and your channel more traffic... and the robot that is the algorithym doesn't really care *why* people are engaging (watching and commenting), it only cares that they are engaging.

I would like to know who considered it quite reasonable to allow a company to use it for tourism. Bad call eh!
Hundreds of thousands of visitors have taken this same tour without any issues and the operators weren't to know it was going to erupt that day, even with a risk level increase, or they would't have taken tours! The operators didn't want their staff to die, and they had regular safety checks with NZ's work safety departments. It's bad luck, not a bad call bro.

There was a french couple, vulcanologists, that filmed craters in the most dangerous conditions, they took big risks but had a lot of experience, more than anybody probably, and were well equiped. While climbing towards the crater of a volcano in Japan suddenly a piroclastic flow shot down the slope at more than a 100 kmh and killed them, and 40 others, in a matter of seconds, caught everyone by surprise. Very dangerous places..., and these tourists apparently were dressed for a picnic while walking right into the crater...
Crossing the Atlantic ocean can be hazardous too.

With the tragedy that has occurred on White Island, it saddens me that this spectacular, must see tour will no longer be available to future adventure seekers. It has been a feature of tourism for 30 years without any major disaster, but like all of New Zealand's tours there is a risk of things going wrong. When I came to live here in 1965, my Family and I were determined to experience all of there was to see and experience. We went Bungee Jumping. Helicopter flight up the Mount Fox Glacier. Ski Plane landing at the top of the Franz Joseph Glacier,. Tours through all the Thermal regions of Rotorua. Caving in Waitomo. Bush trips etc. All of these had a risk element and could have turned in a second from fun to disaster. It didn't stop us and we all have wonderful memories of those times. Having said that, my Family sends its condolences to all those visitor's whose trip of a lifetime turned into a nightmare here in my adopted country. We grieve with you and wish you a speedy recovery . People will always do these risky things because it seems to be part of the Human species and horrible accidents will continue to happen not just in New Zealand, but in all danger spots on this World that are a magnet for the adventurous.

Lake Taupo is part of a giant volcano if that went off it would be carnage.
Is such a sad story what happened here but do understand the odds are very slim of this happening
Tours here have been going on for many years without incident and is a very unfortunate situation but you are much more likely and at higher risk just driving in your car everyday

It’s owned by some private New Zealanders (who make a fortune off it) however they refuse to put any facilities in (like better wharfs, guard rails or helipads.) Unsafe!

Amazing that they allowed the general public i.e. tourists to go there to explore! Some adventure! Cost too many lives all for profit and greed by those tourist operators and these greedy cruise lines these days that pack people in like sardines also for profit and greed! Those aren't sleek elegant cruise ships of past decades since the 20s and 30s, they're not only floating hotels, they're ugly floating buildings! RIP to those who lost their lives and hope those who were burned survive their wounds. I'm sure they'll have CPTSD from this for years to come unfortunately!
