This is based on the "Nonsense-talking wall" glitch and the "Empty text box" glitch from Earthbound. According to the Yume Nikki Wiki is not an actual glitch and is intentionally programmed to happen.
And he was god damn right, I've came across this glitch just casually playing the game lol (I was trying to find some sort of hidden stuff or something like this and here we go, a nothing-talking wall), and i'm pretty sure some percentage of people have done so as well
I would've missed it myself if there wasn't any indication there was anything to interact i wpuldve gone "oh, dead end" and went back my ass is not winning
I don't know why it's not shown here, but the event is actually creepier. The screen doesn't cut to black as shown here, it actually ZOOMS IN slowly while fading out. The first time I triggered the event I didn't know that happened. Imagine my reaction.
It's really strange that glitches like these can be so unsettling. I guess you just never expect games to malfunction, and when they do, you feel as though you've seen something that was never meant to exist in the first place. tl;dr, bricks were shat.
I think it happens more often than you think. I used to have nightmares as a kid where the game would crash or glitch out, and it would scare the shit out of me. Right after that, something fucked up would happen in my room.
Gyah! Agh...this was definitely intentional. x..x This is not the creepiest thing in the game, but...in a video game, the most disturbing thing I feel that can happen is the game crashing or glitching in an unsettling way, usually with (indeed) a jarring noise. Since this Famicom world IS a 'video game' in the game, this works extremely well... Having had nightmares where I'm playing a game and then it goes to glitchy hell, this is particularly chilling for me. o..O Thanks for sharing.
its funny coz its randomly determined when you go to sleep... so u can't go up stair and try again if the event is not happening, need wake up and sleep to try again...
@@igamine 1 year late but i think he did it wrong (since it's an event that has 1/3 chance once madotsuki falls asleep, so if it didn't triggered he must woke up and try again, same happens in face event)
I'm sure it's not a glitch and it was intentional. I mean, the way the glitch appears gradually as you talk to the wall, the glitch BGM fading before Madotsuki wakes up, the fact that Madotsuki wakes up. A real glitch would screw up as soon as you began to talk to the wall, the BGM would not fade, and Madotsuki would not wake up, instead you would have to close the game. Kikiyama made a good job here C:
@BTIsaac My scariest dream was of me playing Star Fox for SNES. I was going through the first level when Andross's face appeared in the background. My ship slowed down, as well as the engine sound slowing down, and the ship went upwards towards the top of the screen, where one of those ring things you fly through were. When my ship flew through that, the game spazzed, colors flashing in an epileptic fashion and the most chilling glitch noise ever being made. I will never forget that noise... o.o
How did someone find this out in the first place? Who honestly went to that specific spot in that specific room and pressed a button? Did someone look in the game's code or did someone legitimately figure this out though trial and error?
I'd expect people find out most of the secrets in YN and its fangames by just opening the game in RPG maker and looking for events or something. Edit: oops comment's 7 years old
I mean, I'm a very meticulous person when it comes to looking for stuff in a game like hidden items in Pokemon. Similar to that, I'd imagine someone scouring the whole room and pressing the interact button anywhere and everywhere they can in the room just to try and find if anything happens, especially considering the room is just empty and it seems kinda purposeless. Even though it's a dream game and things aren't always supposed to do something or make sense, I feel like that room's existence had to have a purpose from the start since it's in the deepest recesses of the dungeon (meaning max amount of times you can go DOWN stairs) and there were a couple stairwells going down through rooms with only the purpose seemingly for getting to that end room. Considering there's somewhat of a buildup to get to that room and the fact that it's empty makes me very curious, and so of course someone who got that same feeling scoured the whole room looking for literally ANYTHING to happen. I guess taking it from a game developer's perspective can help too, because why go through all of the trouble just to make those rooms and staircases just for the end of it to be empty? If that's the case then it kinda seems like a waste of time I guess tbh. Well, that's what I think at least.
I was just curious if the original methodology to discover this was pure insanity levels of trial & error or game code inspection. (Also holy shit 8 years have passed and I still remember this)
@@soupy-san well tonight i decided to revisit yume nikki and i stumbled upon this room here that i never saw before so for some reason i went to the only spot on the wall that actually did something and just spammed it. the room liked different and im like did it actually look like this when i came in? so hella searching later and i find this. so i guess i was just lucky to stumble upon this because of my meaningless actions

still a cool effect
Of course it's intentional. Madot wakes up afterwards rather than the game actually crashing for realsies.
lmao i had nightmares of games glitching out like this when I was a wee lad
Yeah when I first entered the room I immediately thought of earthbound lol
Of course
Becauze Kikiyama just KNEW someone would just go and talk to the wall!!
Or that they could open the map in RPG maker and find it more easily 👀

Maybe it depends on what version you have.
This was post so many years ago that the newer version might be different

the sound made me crazy
Game glitches terrify me. I used to get them all the time on my nes console, and every time I got one, I'd freak out and cry. :c
I used to have nightmares as a kid where everything would glitch out and and scary shit would happen soon after.
Like when you take out a game cartridge from a Gameboy or Gameboy advance while in the middle of a game, it just doesn't sound right lol
Behold, the hardest event to access in the game. (Also you are locked out of both access points after doing this)
Seeing how the menus in the area are a reference to Mother that's actually plausible.
It's really strange that glitches like these can be so unsettling. I guess you just never expect games to malfunction, and when they do, you feel as though you've seen something that was never meant to exist in the first place.

This glitch has to be intentional because it ends with the sound simply fading out and Madotsuki waking up.
one time something similar happened in my dreams... ... I think I crashed myself.

Thanks for showing the path to getting there
oh no, the tent glitch again
This reminds me of the Threed Tent glitch from Earthbound were you would also talk to a wall to mess up the game.

this isn't a real glitch in the game , the "glitching out" is an intended effect.
