  • This is a co-operative drill to practise footwork. The sword swings are not so much meant to be cuts but rather to give the defender's steps direction, timing and purpose. The base movement should be fluid and precise, but you can also freely include more creative actions.
You can read more about the exercise here: marozzo.com/th...

I can see how this drill could also work with other body targets as well. On the surface it looks like a drill to deal with leg shots, but in fact it's a great drill for non-linear distance management (by means of good footwork). Thanks Ilkka!

I want to start a HEMA club at my University. This will make for a good drill.

I think it would help with proper montante form and leg protection

Some Brazilian music in there, you'd have a Capoeira video.

Too much spinning, I think that would just reinforce bad habits that will get you owned in a match. The principal of the exercise is solid though.

@Phoenix 𝙾𝚙𝚎𝚗 𝙼𝚢 PROFILE Oh absolutely, as an exercise, this is good stuff. My issues is purely the spinning. Swordplay utilizes a lot of muscle memory and the spinning in this has a strong chance of training your body to do the wrong thing. Do the exercise without the spinning and it would be great.
Sure there are some situations where you would want to spin in a proper swordfight/sparring, but at no point are they in the situation where you would be safe to spin. Spinning in real combat and sparring is tactical and carefully timed. It's not flashy or done to show off.

@Christina 19 y.o - check my vidéó In greatsword use, spinning isn't defensive. Its offensive. You spin to engage separate opponents. So this exercise would really work for that. But like I said in the other replies, its solid as an exercise if you just drop the spinning.

@Ayleen Aislinn Depends where you're located really as it would reduce shipping if it was local. But Kult of Athena is popular for swords in general, tough they're better for sharps, There is also the Hema Shop and Hema Supplies, or directly from manufacturers such as Regenyei, Black Fencer, Kvetun, Castille or Sigi.
The steel practice sword they're using is called a Federschwert btw, or Feder for short.
You honestly not need one until you join a club or find a sparring partner who also has one. There are much cheaper options for solo training. Synthedic trainers are great for that and work for early days in a club.
