Banzai charges were banned since 1904 since the Siege of Port Arthur. By 1944 Banzai charges were more of a thing you do if the situation has truly gone dire. But of course in Iwo Jima it was a completely different story, most of the garrison was already demoralized and the hope of reinforcements coming was all but for nothing. So Banzai charges were done mostly out of desperation.

He only served briefly as the chief of staff of an army and otherwise was only commanding a division. As a divisional commander you do not strategically think out of the box in the way rommel or other field marshals did so he cannot be compared to them, he has no noteworthy achievements. In Iwo jima he used the difficult terrain to his advantage, but since world war two brought up thousands of generals like him most of them would have more or less been able to do the same thing. Iwo jima was doomed right from the start and he only perhaps postponed the inevitable outcome a little bit longer than another general would have.
He's not skilled, he's not pragmatic, much less rational minded. The disgust is well placed considering the situation of most of the world in 2023 for the sake of common sense. The concepts are ludicrous. Do businesses that are successful operate like this? Why are we being asked to accept nonsense like its scripture?

They lost over 90% of the garrision yet inflicted the most casulties in marine history on a 5 mile island with little food, water, ammunition, and no air/sea support...Wierd statistic. The rivalry between the IJA and IJN seems so utterly mad but when you read some of the things the different branches of the US military say about each other and how the politicians who've served in different branches have shown blatant favouritism, you can understand how such a culture is fostered and nurtured. I remember this being the third battle my grandma was on (America) he was on tinian and Saipan before never said hate once. But I knew just now from talking to him this was the worst battle.
I watched this movie with him and I felt bad for inviting him. he was a decorated war vet that tried to forget it and only came to see if for his grand son and cuz my grandmother said he’d be fine , I feel like a pieced shirt now.
My grandpa was in Saipan as well (I am Japanese). Crazy to think about how long its been since the war ended, and I pray for those who died on both side.

As a former japan occupied country, we actually support japan war against allied country, because we see japan as our liberators.
