A tragic hero. Sources suggested he was aware that Japan was unable to win the war all along, hence was labelled as a pessimist and was sent to this island which he and high command knew very well was a suicide mission. Still he has done his duty to the utmost.

Tadamichi Kuribayashi is perhaps the most underrated commander of the Axis Powers. Not only was he a skilled, pragmatic general who inflicted some of highest casualty rates the United States ever suffered during the war, but he was also a compassionate, rational human being.
He evacuated civilians so they wouldn’t get caught in the crossfire, he shared the hardships of his men living in appalling conditions, he visited wounded soldiers in the hospital, he forbade the use of banzai charges (believing them to be futile and a waste), and he openly opposed going to war with the U.S. (believing it to be last nation Japan should fight). It is said that the Japanese government sent Kuribayashi to Iwo Jima, knowing he wouldn’t make it off alive. Kuribayashi himself knew defending Iwo Jima was an inevitable defeat, but he also knew if the U.S. captured it, Japan would be in full range of American bombers. If defending Iwo Jima meant protecting his nation’s civilians from those bombs for even a little while longer, then he would gladly defend that island to his last breath. The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted for over a month and resulted in nearly 28,000 American casualties, and it climaxed with group of Japanese soldiers launching a sneak attack on an American encampment before being wiped out. It is said this group of Japanese soldiers was led by Kuribayashi himself, making him one of last generals to lead from the front and die in the front. The reason his body wasn’t identified in the aftermath is because he wore the uniform of a common soldier, not an officer.
Tadamichi Kuribayashi was one of the best men the Axis Powers had to offer during the war and it’s a shame he isn’t widely known like Erwin Rommel. I honestly can’t thank this film enough for giving him the recognition he rightfully deserves. Rest In Peace General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (1891-1945).

Not to understate Tadamichi himself, but Japanese Army commanders themselves are rather forgettable due to the overall performance of the Japanese Army. Even though relative to other Japanese commanders, he was superior, even at Iwo Jima, for every 1 American lost, 3 Japanese would die. And by every standard, that’s considered a pretty poor performance for a defender on what’s effectively a fortress island.
Now of course that’s due to Americas vastly superior navy, air, and ground forces, but still.

@@roy6907 you talk nonsense it's like you put Tyson at the time of his glory against a lightweight champion. And everyone expected the lightweight to fall on the first punch. But the lightweight held on throughout the fight stopping Tyson at times, in the end the lightweight fell knocked out. But it is a Pyrhus victory. Your Americans facing an army with the same means did not pass... He is an excellent general who did the job but could not do more. I would have been ok with you if after the months of bombardments after a week the island would have surrendered

@@roy6907 casualty rate was nearly 1:1 if you include the japanese who hid after the battle as casualties. americans strength was 5:1 just in ground troops with complete air and sea superiority.
considering they held out for 5 weeks on an area of 8 square miles while inflicting more casualties than losses themselves i'd say he performed far better than you could expect especially since this was practically at the end of the war

It might end up that way but it doesn't start that way. Guerillas don't have tanks or artillery pieces. These were soldiers who fought a conventional battle and when they are just about wiped out, they switch to guerilla tactics. The Japanese army in China never used guerilla tactics because they were beating the Chinese.

It is surprising that Japanese infantry never adopted a sub MG, but Im not sure if their eventual gradual defeat can be put down to this, as it did not prevent their phenomenal success in 1st year of the war.
The tanks were flimsy compared even to western tanks of the early war , but how much of the Pacific war or even China turned on tanks? Tanks making a difference was only patchy here and there small scale.

Section 9 is such a disgrace...anime is another disgrace that is made because of American comics influation on Japan after the war. War will keep happen if Americans don't experience being defenders of their homeland. They must experience the same pain that many countries felt...to make them truly understand the war. Those Americans were those that sent weapons to the places that are at war, to make the war endless.

But when the veterans of a war cames home they´re no longer welcome, because they have many to tell, many things that the other citizens don´t want to hear. About the lie that war is honor, about the victims, the destruiction, nowbody wants to hear it. You rember Rambo (the first film)/ When he returned he wasn´t welcome in his country.

Japanese army rifles and equipment were inferior. I'm no expert but their rifles lacked power to knock down or badly hurt a man if they didn't kill the target. They were used to fighting the Chinese, who had worse equipment than they did. Go to Wikipedia and search for Battle of Khalkhin Gol. It was in 1939 and the Soviets mauled the Japanese. You're right that island fighting is not the best terrain for armor but what they had didn't match what the Americans had, who fought on the same terrain.

I don't know about the rockets that the Japanese Army had, but their equipment from rifles to artillery to digging equipment was not up to the Allies, esp the Americans. If you watch the movie, the Japanese are digging beforehand. If they were Americans do you think they'd be digging with shovels & picks? They'd be using bulldozers & earthmovers. The Japanese Army lacked all of that. They were used to fighting Chinese, who were worse off. The Navy was top notch; it just couldn't replace losses.

Did you Know, Mao killed 7x more Chinese then Japan did. but its irrelevant to this, why is it, on every WW2 Japanese related video, people always bring out Nanking, why can't it just stay on the subject of the video

250,000 civilians were executed by the Japanese in Nanking, never forget the atrocities they inflicted on unarmed civilians.

@Easyway1 yes. Sweden is Richer than Finland in every way. And wasted land, lets not talk about Finland. The whole country is wasted land haha. First puppet of Sweden in OUR control , then in Russian control, feel bad for you. You want to talk about war? Well Swedens been in way more wars than Finland and won more than you can imagen. Have FInland won against Russia? No, theyve fought hard, but they didnt win the winter war nor the continuation war. Have Sweden, Yes. Look up Battle of Narva.
