Tadamichi Kuribayashi is perhaps the most underrated commander of the Axis Powers. Not only was he a skilled, pragmatic general who inflicted some of highest casualty rates the United States ever suffered during the war, but he was also a compassionate, rational human being. He evacuated civilians so they wouldn’t get caught in the crossfire, he shared the hardships of his men living in appalling conditions, he visited wounded soldiers in the hospital, he forbade the use of banzai charges (believing them to be futile and a waste), and he openly opposed going to war with the U.S. (believing it to be last nation Japan should fight). It is said that the Japanese government sent Kuribayashi to Iwo Jima, knowing he wouldn’t make it off alive. Kuribayashi himself knew defending Iwo Jima was an inevitable defeat, but he also knew if the U.S. captured it, Japan would be in full range of American bombers. If defending Iwo Jima meant protecting his nation’s civilians from those bombs for even a little while longer, then he would gladly defend that island to his last breath. The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted for over a month and resulted in nearly 28,000 American casualties, and it climaxed with group of Japanese soldiers launching a sneak attack on an American encampment before being wiped out. It is said this group of Japanese soldiers was led by Kuribayashi himself, making him one of last generals to lead from the front and die in the front. The reason his body wasn’t identified in the aftermath is because he wore the uniform of a common soldier, not an officer. Tadamichi Kuribayashi was one of the best men the Axis Powers had to offer during the war and it’s a shame he isn’t widely known like Erwin Rommel. I honestly can’t thank this film enough for giving him the recognition he rightfully deserves. Rest In Peace General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (1891-1945).
Not to understate Tadamichi himself, but Japanese Army commanders themselves are rather forgettable due to the overall performance of the Japanese Army. Even though relative to other Japanese commanders, he was superior, even at Iwo Jima, for every 1 American lost, 3 Japanese would die. And by every standard, that’s considered a pretty poor performance for a defender on what’s effectively a fortress island. Now of course that’s due to Americas vastly superior navy, air, and ground forces, but still.

Johannes Blaskowitz is perhaps even more underrated than Kuribayashi, at least in the humane department, because the latter gets this film if nothing else. The major general signed death warrants for Germans committing atrocities in Poland and was generally appalled by the behaviour of the army towards the population. In doing so he managed to earn the ire of Hitler himself that he would be the only major general not promoted to field marshal in 1940. He inexplicably committed suicide while held in detention even though his lawyers were convinced his name would have been cleared and he would have been shown as the prime example of how a general could have behaved humanely in the German army.
A tragic hero. Sources suggested he was aware that Japan was unable to win the war all along, hence was labelled as a pessimist and was sent to this island which he and high command knew very well was a suicide mission. Still he has done his duty to the utmost.
(Tennouheika) Banzai used by japanese soldier means long life to the emperor, banzai is a generic enthusiastic exclamation word like "hurray!" but literally is "Then thousand years of life", so "long life"
At the start of the war, the Japanese Navy and Naval Air Force were among the best in the world but they got wore down as the war progressed. As far as the army is concermed, while the soldiers were brave, they lagged behind in terms of quality and quantity of equipment such as rifles and tanks.

It might end up that way but it doesn't start that way. Guerillas don't have tanks or artillery pieces. These were soldiers who fought a conventional battle and when they are just about wiped out, they switch to guerilla tactics.
