Boston is a STAPLE to anyone who has ever listened to Rock music.
The composition of this song is absolutely incredible.
We almost took music like this for granted in the 70's. I listen to it now and realize how absolutely talented bands like this were. No digital, no auto-tune, or time justifying, pure talent on analog tape. Then you consider this was done in a home basement studio... unreal!
Right?! I think about that all of the time. I knew it was good music when I'd hear it on the radio or my records/cassettes/cds, but it's only now (in recent decades) that I realize how INCREDIBLY AMAZING it is! Boston was my 2nd concert ever (after Eagles. Lol) Also, the fact that we could see these amazing bands LIVE! It blows my mind, but oh what memories! 😀👍❤
This is from the greatest debut album in rock history. Every song is great. Peace of Mind, More Than a Feeling, Hitch a Ride, Smokin’, There’s Something About You, Take You Home Tonight. You should hit them all Harri. When this came out in 1976 we were all mesmerized by something that sounded so futuristic. It still does!
I found out it was actually etched out of the top spot be Guns and Roses, Appetite for Destruction as the top selling debut album. But not by much. ;)

Harri, this is just one man singing and one man playing all of the instruments, then mixed in his basement sound room.Tom Sholtz and Brad Delp. Brad is the singer. This entire album is amazing!
Barry Goudreau is playing lead guitar on this one.
While Tom played most of the instruments (except some guitar parts!) and Brad sang (all of the parts, including all the harmonies), Sib Hashian played all the drums on this album except for 'Rock and Roll Band' which was done by Jim Masdea. On the back of this album was a story about how all of the musicians in this band met and knew each other, but that was a bunch of marketing bs. 3 guys could never do this live so they basically had to make up a band who could play this stuff live.

@@michaelbriefs9764 No, Tom didn't play the drums. Got that from Boston's album, "WE FOUND IT IN THE TRASHCAN, HONEST!" I read it in the Linear notes. He did everything else but the lead vocals on his home-made basement 24 track recorder. Presented it to CBS Records. They signed them right away!
Stop all this urban legend Tom Scholz/Boston BS. Tom did not play every instrument on this record. Tom does not play a single drum track and the record is better for that fact. Sib plays all drum tracks except for one and that one was played by Toms old long time bandmate Jim Masdea. Tom did NOT write all of the songs either. Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and he co wrote Smokin'
Barry who had been playing in bands with Tom and Brad since 1969 plays electric rhythm guitar on both Foreplay and Long Time. Barry also plays lead guitar on Long Time. Barry also plays electric rhythm on Let Me Take You Home as well as lead and slide guitars. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home. The singer is Brad Delp (RIP). One of the most versatile and underrated voices in rock. Their most well known song is More Than A Feeling and if you haven't heard it, then do so. It is the band at their best.👍👍
The most incredible thing about Brad Delp was that he could sing 4 part harmony with himself. that's right, every voice you hear on any Boston song is Brad doing multitracking to his own voice!

Harri, this song was on Boston’s Debut album, titled simply, “Boston”. This is in my opinion the greatest hard rock album in history. At the age of 18, my best friend and I (same age, one day apart) would drive around every Friday night checking out girls and Rocking out to Boston on the cassette deck. The old car was literally lurching forward as my buddy kept time to the music with his foot on the accelerator. 45 years later, we still agree, best album ever.
Spring 1977. Cutting class Junior year in high school, driving to the lake with my girlfriends, blasting the speakers to this song. Fabulous great, fun memories when we didn’t have a care in the world!

Saw this tour live in indy. Sammy Hagar fresh out of Montrose warmed up. Kick ass show. And, the whole debut album was recorded in the guitar players (Tom Schultz) basement...crazy.

THIS ALBUM WAS THE BEST SELLING DEBUT ALBUM EVER. EACH SONG IS GOLD.
This was a staple in my 8-track rotation back in '77, cruising around with my friends in my old '65 Fairlane! Makes me think of keg parties at the lake!
In '95 my best girlfriend had a '65 Fairlane! That's a gorgeous automobile & I can only imagine the times y'all had together.
Tom shultz played most of the instruments, over dubbing part after part, etc. had to find a band after the album skyrocketed, to play live.
Stop this Boston/Scholz urban ,legend BS. Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and the record is much better for that fact. All drum tracks excerpt one were played by Sib. Barry plays guitar on multiple songs and Fran plays bass on multiple songs. Brad plays guitar on one song. Brad, Tom and Barry (who introduced Tom to Brad) had been playing gigs and recording demos since 1969, so putting together the band was not a big deal at all and the band performed the songs on the demo for the Epic Execs BEFORE the record deal was signed by EPIC. Tom, Barry, Brad Jim Masdea and a bass player that rarely gets motioned were called Mothers Milk and they played these (early arrangements) songs years before this record was released.

To this day, December 1st, this music is so uplifting, and upbeat! Positive vibes emit, when their songs are playing! I absolutely love this band! I was born in 1970, and to this day, there is no other band like Boston!

Tom Sholz played all the instruments -and recorded the whole album in his basement studio. I think Brad Delp was the vocalist for it.
I'm always amazed when I come across someone who hasn't heard this song before. It's like never having heard Stairway To Heaven or Born to be Wild. A staple of rock radio since the album was released, but unlike so many songs which got played until the records wore out, this is one that still holds that power (along with a number of other great Boston tunes, naturally).
That's an old Hammond B3 organ that you heard. This was released in 1976. The vocals are analog multi-tracks; the singer, Brad Delp (R.I.P.), sang all of the harmonies himself. The sound engineering on this album is incredible, considering that it was done in a self-built basement studio by the keyboardist/guitarist, Tom Scholz, who worked on it in his spare time while working full-time as an engineer at Kodak. If you liked the organ, then you need to react to "Smokin'" next.
@Gerald H He invented the "Rockman" guitar pedal, but it was post-graduation, while he was working at Kodak. In an interview I saw, he said that because he was recording in his basement, he couldn't have the volume of his amps & soaks to the level he needed (too loud for his neighbors). So, out of necessity, he built a pedal that he could plug headphones into that produced the same sound as the amps would. He got a patent on it and started a company to build & sell them to other musicians.
@Gerald H He did build his own recording studio by himself in his basement, which is impressive. I saw them in 2017 and Scholz was using something he called the "Hyper Space" pedal that could store snippets of what he was playing on-the-fly and play it back on command, allowing him to layer riffs while playing live. It was pretty cool. I don't know that he invented it, but knowing him, he probably did.
That is not a Hammond B 3. Tom used a Hammond M3 on the first two records. This record was mixed at Westlake Studios on their then state of the art API console. Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded at The Record Plant LA. All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C on their Quad Eight Console using a Neumann 87 solid state mic. Lastly Tom worked for Polaroid not Kodak
@@roccaclassico9028 The Rockman is NOT a guitar pedal. It is a guitar pre amp that can either go direct into the mixer and/or allow the use of headphones. The Sony portable cassette player the Sony Walkman was big at the time that the Rockman was first released. The Rockman was about the size of the Sony Walkman.
@@roccaclassico9028 The Digitech Whammy Pedal does some of what Toms pedal does but does it much better. Like EVH and other top rung guitar players at that time Tom used the Echoplex and it was the foundation of his so called hyperspace pedal.

I was in high school in the 70's and probably bought one of their first albums and was blown away. I went and told my buddies how incredible this band was and they said "sure". I had them come to my house and we listened to the whole album which has to be one of the best ever made. My buddies didn't say sure anymore they were transported to a new realm and the rest is history. I'm in my 60's now and did not realize that someday artists of this caliber would fade away and we have nobody doing this incredible music anymore.
Wow. Harri thanks for playing this, it brings back a ton of memories. I have cousins who have been in the industry for ages and one did promo work for this group (and for many other artists) when the 1st album was released. About that time my uncle passed away and the entire group came to the wake to pay their respects. Incredibly nice guys, and a genuinely kind gesture.
In the best possible sense, this song is truly "nasty". It rocks you on SO many levels, in so many different ways and you always are left smiling at the end...

Sophomore in high school when this came out. Totally awesome and I still listen to them all
In 1979, saw Boston play at the Met Center in Bloomington MN. They played Smokin' Foreplay and Longtime in a row, There was quite a bit of vibration going through the building (concrete and steel). During Foreplay a set of pipes rose out of the basement and hooked into the organ. Thought they were going to hit a harmonic resonance and bring the building down as there was so much on the bass notes. A little more than 20 years later the city was demolishing the building to put up the Mall of America. Took about 5 attempts to implode the building.
I remember those pipes coming up in Dallas, and how Tom ended that solo to jump off into the first riff of Long Time on guitar. Blow my young buzzed mind.
Some people included Boston in the Corporate Rock genre. I think because the recording sounded so slick and perfect.
From an oustanding guitar led rock album with terrific organ work made in a home studio I think and which still ranks as one of the greats which has never lost its appeal with oustanding songs, musicianship and dynamics.
I won this album off the then am rock/soft rock station WLEE, by way of answering an off the wall riddle, before it was released to the public-can’t remember Now, but the answer was either Railroad tracks or Trains. A few friends were tuned in that night as well,& as soon I was done giving my info & hung up, my phone started ringing off the wall!!!Ended up having a “Debut Party”with about a dozen who showed up, after I called 1 person to tell them it had arrived!!!Goood times back when!!!
Foreplay is meaning it is the opening “act” of the album, which you MUST listen to in its entirety!
When this came out I played the entire Album everyday after work for at least two months.
All instruments and engineering was by Tom Scholz. He had a friend come in to sing and another to help clean up the drumming. When he recorded this there was no band.

As for the engineering, Tom does not talk about this but it is none the less the truth. When Boylan heard Toms drum and acoustic instrument tracks that he submitted for the record, Boylan rejected them because they were "amateurish". Boylan then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms home studio to tutor Tom on how to record drums and acoustic instrument as well as proper mic technique. Boylan then ordered Tom to redo the tracks using the knowledge and skills that he acquired.
The band did in fact exist before the record was completed and released. The band as pictured on the back of the record recorded the song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad at The Record Plant LA with Boylan producing the track.

I had the musical equivalent of an orgasm when I first heard this song played at a high school pep rally in ‘77. I instantly fell in love with Boston and throughout the years, acquired every one of Boston’s albums. Bradley Delp is one of the all-time most capable rock singers. Too bad he passed at such a relatively young age! So glad to see I’m in such good company with all the fans who’ve checked in! Way to go, Harri!

This is from Boston’s self-titled debut album, released in ‘76, which has been one of the most successful debut albums of all time, as there is not a single “throw-away” track that didn’t deserve your attention! This was still in the day that album rock was the order of the day and one tended to listen to an entire álbum at a time to supplement the hits you might catch on radio.
Tom Scholz literally engineered the sound heard on this album by creating analog electronic effects that when incorporated with the layering production in his basement studio enabled a never-before heard rock sound buoyed by Tom’s innovative guitar work, technology and mixing. Even with the myriad of analog and later digital effects created since ‘75, the prototype effect boxes handmade by Scholz were sought after for decades.
With writing, performing, engineering and production to Tom’s credit one could go on at length about the sound and he created. That said, it is also fair to say that there would be, and also still is, no Boston without the legendary vocals of the late, great Brad Delp. The music world tragically lost him much too soon. Indeed, the musicians assembled to tour this album brought about an equally stunning experience that blew the audience away!
It was more than two years before Boston released their 2nd album, and another eight years before their 3rd album in ‘86. Though not prolific, the band only released 6 studio albums from ‘76 to 2013 - with each of the first four charting in the Top 10 in the USA. There were hits on each of these four, however it is this debut album “Boston” that stands as legendary in the company of “Dark Side of The Moon”, “Pet Sounds”, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “Led Zep 4”, etc.
Even the slog headed music industry critics tended to give this incredible album it’s due despite it’s unusual path to release. You will likely enjoy going down this rabbit-hole. Another fine reaction, Harri. 🙏 Thanks.
Best "Garage" band ever.
The Boston third stage album has a similar foreplay and song (The launch), but I recommend listening to most songs on the album as most are worthy of a listen: Can'tcha say, Amanda, To be a man, My Destination, We're Ready, and Cool the engines.
Love your reaction, When (1976) I first heard this album, (and you MUST listen to the entire album), I knew it would be in the R&R HOF !! This album was entirely the idea and work of one man, Tom Scholz, an MIT grad in Electrical Engineering, who quit his job at Polaroid, (I think), built his own brand of guitar electronics ("Rockman"),and single-handed played all instruments and recorded this in his basement - not a studio. (his BASEMENT)
He did get Brad Delp's help on the vocals (another genius idea) - but all the rest was Scholz. He didn't pull a band together until after the album came out and he realized he needed to start touring. He is a freaking genius !! His interview is on The Tube, right now. Keep up the good work.
Scholz has a masters from MIT in mechanical engineering. Tom did not record or play all of the instrument tracks on this record either. Barry plays on three songs if you count Foreplay and Long Time as two songs. Fran plays two songs. Sib plays drums on all songs except for one. Brad plays acoustic 12 string on one song. All of Brads vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C and not one device in the signal chain was made by Tom. Brad and Tom knew each other since 1969 when Barry introduced them. Brad sang on the demo tape that eventually got Epic Record Company's attention and that led to the project being assigned to producer John Boylan. Brad signed the same record deal and at the same time as Tom
Also the band was assembled BEFORE the record deal was signed because the record company execs heard that Mothers Milk (the name change was suggested during the later stages of the recording process )at that time was just Tom working in his home studio. Brad, Barry and Tom had been playing gigs and recording demos years before this record was recorded and released.
Tom has a problem with exaggeration and with self aggrandizement and Tom has not been the most honest and transparent person when it comes to telling the story of this record and who did what on in. After all the litigation, Tom had to start telling the real story because the truth came out in the litigation process. The liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record are a much more accurate and truthful explanation as to who did what on this record.

Bradley Edward Delp the vocalist commited Suicide back in March of 2007. He was so talented, one of a kind. He was only 55. Boston was incredible.

Best concert I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to a lot! We lost Brad Delp too soon but, Tom Scholz is the master of the guitar! MIT grad that made all of these sounds alone in his basement.
This music is what for decades old and still holds up amazingly well.

Tom Scholtz graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT
at time this debut album came out, it was a very 'progressive' album, it was released at the height of the Disco era, a period of transition in rock music.
This is one of my favorite Boston songs! Love that pause after the intro! As I've gotten older, I really appreciate acoustic guitar, even when it's mixed in with hard stuff like Metallica. I've also seen bands that have grown up with me (lol), like The Scorpions, do some of their songs more in an acoustic way then when we were first young. Got all that? We grew up together. I went to college with an 8-track tape player and listened to Wishbone Ash "Phoenix" religiously !
