This is beyond incredible.Performance, instrument, engineering.....faultless. Totally enthralling. I am a professional organist myself and THIS is what I look for in performances! Something really authentic and exciting. This is dynamite and exactly what Liszt had in mind if you think about it. A thrilling experience. Liszt was a big fan of the organ anyway. I mean, why wouldn't he have been? lol
Hello :) I agree with you. If you are interested in watching the live performance of Helmut Deutsch at Saint Sulpice in Paris, here it is (at 57:30): ruclips.net/video/ouMUDIZ7H14/видео.html And if you like "dynamite piano", I am inviting you to watch this video with the piano transcription made by a pupil of Liszt: ruclips.net/video/UBcnm5Qw56w/видео.html Enjoy ! Best regards. :)
Two remarkable feats are at play here: 1 - The immaculate articulation and clarity of the performer. Both are essential for this piece to stand any chance in such a reverberant space. 2 - The ability of this awesome instrument to respond to the performer's touch. Uniquely with these instruments, the organist and the organ builder must share the accolades when such brilliant music is made.
Jacob Allinson I couldn't have said it better. This had me in an orgasmic puddle of years of joy. This organ is like a dream come true! So responsive...the action must be a dream to play. Stunning. Kudos to the artist. Top notch!!!!!!
Absolutely stunning Helmut. The memory of sitting in the cathedral with Dominique and others whilst you played this in your practice for the recital many years ago remains one of those artistic experiences one never forgets: the memory has never dimmed - I can hear that performance ringing in my ears. BRAVO! Absolutely stunning.
Superlative arrangement and performance from Helmut Deutsch, such exquisite taste in timbre! I don't think any conductor brings this piece in at 19 minutes, but Deutsch's tempi are totally appropriate to the organ - and he certainly suffers none of the balance problems that plague most orchestral renditions, with the brass totally swamping the strings in that heart-stopping fanfare. Thank you sanysov for sharing this one!
What an amazing performance of organist, registration, timing and the actual playing of the building (as the previous reviewer mentions!) This is the most satisfying arrangement of Les Preludes because of its uniqueness of quality. Bravo to organist and the one who posted to share with the rest of us who passed by. Wish others had the same enthusiastic and sensational experience we have shared. Unbelieveable that anyone would "thumbs down" this video. Obviously they are oblivious of the technical and artistic skills to pull off such a wonderful performance. Their minority explains the lack of understanding.
You are amazing in your conception of orchestration for the pipe organ and your ability to move the heart with your performance! Kudos! Thank you for making organ music exciting to hear and to feel!
My favorite instrument and one of my favorite Liszt compositions combined and a beautiful performance. Liszt would have loved it since he often transcribed his works for keyboard, orchestra, voice and whatever worked.
About this performance, I appreciate the wonderful restraint in the registration, the "together" of both hands illustrated in articulation, the gradual and exciting crescendo eventually to the use of the great battery of en chamade reeds and the precision evidenced in the accompanying keyboard work behind it all. BRILLIANT WORK, Maestro!
Chill? Hardly needed for providing an astute, accurate, sensitive and scholarly analysis of the performance. I suspect if any ‘chilling’ is required it’s from someone other than Mr Rider.
Liszt's music is never for the faint - hearted . I personally got past Liebestraum and the Consolation in D flat for piano and that was enough ! The Transcendental studies and others are best left for virtuosi to tackle and listen to .
Given the reports that he had a proclivity for showmanship, I’m sure Liszt would love Helmut’s transcription and interpretation. The electricity of this performance falls right in line with ‘Lisztomania.’ Love it!
+Steven Wrigley Steven - listen to Guilmants 1st organ symphony or Widor's 5th in its entirety. How about Vienre's Carrillion de Westminster or the Liszt BACH, Franck's B Minor Choral or his 1st and 3rd or the Grand Piece Symphonique. Try Dupre - Cortage et Litany
robert shaw those are all fantastic pieces! Some great recordings out there of this. However, this is a fantastic arrangement of Liszt. It translates better to organ than anything else I can think of.
HAHAHA!! When I spoke about the composition, I meant the organ's one!!.. Dominique Oberthur is the builder of St. Etienne cathedral's organ in Auxerre!!
Someone once said that the only instrument more versatile than the pipe organ- is the human voice... this is a formidable version of Les Preludes, and I think it is going to enter my list of favorite performances.....
It is always a real pleasure to listen to this transcription, it has an unusual fidelity. I recommend Schubert's Symphony 9... it deserves a transcription at this level. Simply stunning.
I heard this magnificent peice done some years ago at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and St. John The Divine Cathedral. One just need to close their eyes with this and imagine being in one of these vast cathedrals siting mid nave.
this organ makes a magnificent sound in the building. The console in INSIDE the organ . Although tracker action everything else is space age with push button stops duplicated on both sides of the console. In recent years there was some major water damage but I believe it is all back and working now.
I remember a documentary I watched pretty much as a kid. It would have been in the late 70's. The tracker action was first done with circular brass connectors at the junction points. It meant for a very noisy action. At some time way back, they tried triangular joints. That reduced the action noise a lot because the triangles met at each junction. I've never sat near this console but St. Sulpice is noisy as hell if you are close to it.
Search “Organ Recital by Helmut Deutsch at St. Sulpice” to see a new (as in, it was streamed live earlier today as I write this) video of him performing this!
Imo liszt would of tore up the whole modern organ repotoire with amazing pieces like this had he spent more time during his life at the organ and not just the majority of his abbe years....... Absolutely glorious
Although it is ''Molto Bombastico'' Franz Liszt..., You dear Helmut manage the super-accustic space of a giant Cathedral like Saint-Étienne until the finishline ? How dare you 😉🙃😇:) You keep it transparent for the audience... AND you do this by a wonderful accentful expression, permanently ''listening'' ('Witterung' in german) with you ears, finest antennas for transparence, keeping this up in souvereignity - even in Liszt`s worst `majestic flashs`... and what I admire most: with your mature expriance, to fill a Grand Church up with dignity, beauty and joy, swinging, promenading, causing the old Walls nearly to dance and smile... Being a nerd about church organs for 50 years, I never heard somenone reaching this christalline sound... Wow ! Love and admiration to you from here, heartly greetings to St.-Étienne !
He captures the deeply romantic aspect of this piece with a romantic organ! Excellent!
romantic organ, hahaha
@@MtFgt The organ, much like the human voice, can do almost anything if properly trained and "operated"...

You got that right, girl.
3 - the fact that this organ actually has 16' chamades (that actually go into the 16' low range)
Really a breathtaking version for Organ of the famous LISZT-work- both, instrument and organist, are really GREAT......
Absolutely stunning Helmut. The memory of sitting in the cathedral with Dominique and others whilst you played this in your practice for the recital many years ago remains one of those artistic experiences one never forgets: the memory has never dimmed - I can hear that performance ringing in my ears. This organ has such a great voice with this pice it goes perfectly.Probably my favourite pice with liszt's BACH.
My gosh this is wonderful. it takes my breath away
Ah ...!!!! Merci.
Grande composizione, splendida esecuzione, fantastica condivisione che amo!
Grazie!
This is wonderful’ Absolutely wonderful!
To jest po prostu qwa GENIALNE! BRAVO!
Franz Liszt était un mutant. Brillante interprétation et très bel enregistrement. Merci.

Magnifique !!!! tout simplement, Magnifique Hubert Haye
The finest performance I've ever heard of this work. I only for one word for you: " Wow!!! "
So many goose bumps from head to toes!
You are amazing in your conception of orchestration for the pipe organ and your ability to move the heart with your performance! Kudos! Thank you for making organ music exciting to hear and to feel!

I agree totally. Stirring stuff. I knew a David Smith great bloke and sportsman.
Listening this music of heaven, my heart is flying high as an eagle in the sky... absolute beauty!
Beautiful, bravo. Une oeuvre splendide.

hey mr. 4 line comment, will you MAYBE chill?
Brother Lance, I am so very sorry my four lines of supportive comment "got your goat." Now I will chill. Peace.
hey red and cob
read your comment....
my take is you are either a goose, a complete goose
or slightly, moderately or perhaps completely nutty.
Chill? Hardly needed for providing an astute, accurate, sensitive and scholarly analysis of the performance. I suspect if any ‘chilling’ is required it’s from someone other than Mr Rider.
Congratulations!
love the string sounds at beginning

Superbe interprétation. Registrations très riches. Bravo, vraiment !
Merci Helmut.
Wow! Glorious! Wish I could've heard this performance live :-)
Absolutely amazing!
WOW! What a sound! Love this!
This is simply brilliant.
Liszt's music is never for the faint - hearted . I personally got past Liebestraum and the Consolation in D flat for piano and that was enough ! The Transcendental studies and others are best left for virtuosi to tackle and listen to .
Excelente performance!
Gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps.
It would be interesting to watch Liszt' reaction upon hearing his masterpiece played thusly, transcripted for organ!
Given the reports that he had a proclivity for showmanship, I’m sure Liszt would love Helmut’s transcription and interpretation. The electricity of this performance falls right in line with ‘Lisztomania.’ Love it!
Wow wow wow. This ticks all the boxes. This is my new favorite organ piece. That was epic.

Euh..
Someone once said that the only instrument more versatile than the pipe organ- is the human voice... this is a formidable version of Les Preludes, and I think it is going to enter my list of favorite performances.....

Bravo !
This is OUTSTANDING!!!!!!Loved it!!!!!!
Never heard this as an organ arrangement before. Interesting.
Me too.
WOW!! Just wow!
Splendid arrangement! Fantastic performance and all qualities are good: audition, recording, organs.
Totally magnificent playing .
As a commited Lisztian I give this two thumbs up. Awesome.
Bravo bravo bravo brilliance Super
Wow, Wonderful! Thanks to post and gimme the opportunity to listen to this.

Great interpretation, great organ!
It's even better than the original arrangement! Congratulations!
Merci

Listened St Sulpice recording. See my very critic comment in French. Don't agree with you, and coming back to this one!
A magnificent presentation.
Brilliant!
I like 4:27 the very modern timbre and generally the select of voices/timbres of the arrangement!
Marvelous!
magnifico
Imo liszt would of tore up the whole modern organ repotoire with amazing pieces like this had he spent more time during his life at the organ and not just the majority of his abbe years....... Absolutely glorious
This is an orchestral piece that has been re-arranged for organ - quite successfully, one might say.
As it is his own transcription I would think so?
D.Dengler o
je ressens la même "chose" que vous
Wow, just wow.... first time hearing this. Amazeballs!!!!!!!!!!
Perfect, but from 8:40 it is simply fantastic !
WONDERFULLLL!!!

The organ turns into a gun turret! Amazing!
a lot of sweet solo stops beginning around 12:00
Superb! thank you. I have a weakness for superbly written Romantic bombast. Just a character flaw. One I've no intention of removing.
Chapeau bas. Amanzing work.
impresionante
Absolutely superlative
Sparkling and overwhelming
vaya excelente arreglo, felicidades ante todo !
OMG, the Bombarda 16' en Chamade, terrifying, I can't imagine the "telluric" effect with TUTTI!!!
Magnificent!
Wow !!!
Sensacional!
Such an heroic piece. Nice copper Chamades!
