LR308 DPMS Pattern High Pressure vs Standard Bolt!

  • The reason for the 'High Pressure" design was to give more support at the primer area of the cartridge. The smaller firing pin diameter was to reduce primer cratering, piercing and popped primers especially for the 6.5 CM rounds. This was less of a problem with 308.

    Oh, just wait until you run their new dual ejector bolts lol from what I was told the single AR10/LR308 will come with the dual now, phasing out the single. The dual was stiff and in dire need of breaking in, I had 3 fail to fires back to back once it got hot. cartridge wasn't seating properly, firing pin not striking the primer well enough. Had to let the bolt cool down, then the problem went away. When I get home I'll take it all apart and clean the factory oil and crud out, lube it with my oil I run, and take her back out there and hopefully I don't have these issues again. Wilson can be a bear to deal with regarding the parts , but, their customer service is top tier. They will make it right.
    Not sure if I told you, I was shooting an M80 round, and the firing pin went right through the primer, nice clean hole and could see daylight. didn't knock the primer out just punctured a clean hole lol.
    Do you think my under gassing issue could be from the 1 piece gas ring? Ive read with the AR15's they work well but the AR10/LR308's people were having hell with them.

      One ejector hole is enough! Lol! Wilson does have great customer service and has resolved issues very quickly. With the D&H magazine problems I was having that I had purchased from them they offered a full refund or swap them out from a different manufacturer. Even if it was more money and all return costs paid for. They were very quick on this firing pin issue too! Just wish I didn't have to keep using their customer service! Lol! Don't know if your one piece gas ring is an issue but the one experience I had with mine was a brutal amount of friction and after 500 manual cycles by hand it wasn't getting any better. Replaced it with the three ring set-up and the disturbance in the force was mitigated!

      You asked where I have been! As I watched you building Ar15's one after another after another I began to get a little bored. In my own genre I have been shooting and buying different types of weapons...Tavor X-95, Tavor 7 and I also branched out to build a 308 AR. When I checked in on your channel again, you were still building more AR15's. I began looking at other channels for things that were more of interest.
      I can honestly say that I have found your '308' videos more interesting since it dovetails with what I have been doing of late. Up here, Washington state, the riding in the winter is a bit too cold to be enjoyable...so we ride when it gets warmer. Your interests match with mine...you are building a vintage Camaro, I have built a 66 Mustang, firearms are another interest we share... of course we both enjoy off-road riding...I also ride street...I have made the trip from West coast to East coast and back 3 times on my BMW! Overall I believe you have more disposable income than do I! Many things you speak to I already know, but often I will find a few worthwhile "nuggets" that you present. I have a greater drive towards piston designs than you...my favorite rifle is my LWRCI M6 IC. A great shooter! After watching you deal with many miles of desert terrain, I believe my typical rides up here have more variety of trails. Not that watching your videos makes me a vicarious expert! I look forward to your next presentation!

      Some manufacturers call them Magnum bolts but the majority refer to them as "High Pressure". The Odin Works and Wilson Combat complete BCG's come with three rings. The nitrided Wilson Combat BCG's that I ordered had the high pressure bolts and firing pins. Their replacement parts like the firing pin are standard and what they call MilSpec 308 and will not work on a high pressure bolt. WC still doesn't list high pressure bolts or individual bolt replacement parts so watch out for that! I have no idea why WC is so dorked up on some of their 308 stuff. KAK is another source for high pressure parts but I think all of their 308 bolts use the double ejector. YT does not allow redirect links.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  Год назад +1

  • @dadadadada4974
    @dadadadada4974 8 месяцев назад +1

    Question for you, with the replacement pin you got that had the thicker tapered end right before the tip, did you measure the pin protrusion? Basically measure depth from top of bolt to base, then top of bolt to pin, then subtract. The difference should get you the pin protrusion.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  8 месяцев назад

      I did not measure protrusion for the high pressure BCG. I wasn't able to see what would happen with the high pressure firing pin in a standard bolt because I don't have any standard bolts. The range I have come across for 308 Win is .045" - .060" and I believe that's the same for 7.62 NATO for both standard and high pressure bolts but I'm not 100% on this.

    • @dadadadada4974
      @dadadadada4974 8 месяцев назад +1

      I was wondering what the pin protrusion is on your high pressure bolt with the tapered end replacement pin (the one they sent you that had oil). I noticed the tip is a little shorter on the replacement they sent you. It looks like it would be less than .045”. Have you fired it with that replacement pin? Also, are both your BCG’s using the same style of pin (like the oily replacement they sent you)? I don’t think you showed the pin in your other BCG?

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, both my Wilson Combat and Odin Works high pressure BCG's have been test fired with the pins they came with and looking good. I also purchased a spare firing pin from KAK in addition to the WC spare after these build videos and did a test fit for both but not measuring the protrusion or test firing on those. They looks good visually. I do have an old Bushmaster gage for my AR15's. It probably wouldn't hurt to have one for my LR308's. • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  2 месяца назад +1

      It's mostly naming convention and has less to do with actual pressure. The "High Pressure" design uses a smaller diameter firing pin and bolt firing pin hole. Primer flow and piercing of the primers was becoming an issue more so with 6.5 Creedmoor than 308 Win. NATO primers for 7.62 are thicker and weren't really a problem. Recently ran M80 White Box and was still getting some primer flow even with the "High Pressure" design bolt. It's insurance to keep your rifle reliable using cheaper or more hunting oriented rounds which use softer primers. More and more manufacturers are making their 308 bolts the "High Pressure" design. Odin Works, Wilson Combat, JP Rifles and many others. The problem with Wilson Combat is if you buy their complete 308 BCG you get the "High Pressure" design but their individual replacement firing pin and bolt is the standard design. As of right now they still don't have the "High Pressure" individual replacement parts listed although that's the design of their complete BCG's.

Not completely sold on Nitride for BCG's as they usually use 9310 steel bolts which requires very careful heat treatment.
