Two Major Hurricanes: Idalia to Florida & Franklin in the Atlantic…

- Two major hurricanes will be in the Atlantic Basin at the same time. This is the first time this has happened in August since 2010, with Hurricane Danielle and Hurricane Earl.
Idalia, which will become a major hurricane, will move into Florida late today and early Wednesday. A life-threatening storm surge will impact Tampa and points north through the Big Bend. Landfall could be anywhere from Apalachicola, down through Tampa. We've seen a history of storms sneaking into the West Coast of Florida early: Hurricane Charley, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Ian. If you are in a Hurricane Warned location, please have the preparations finished by early afternoon. For Idalia info in Florida, check out: wftv.com
Major Hurricane Franklin will curl around Bermuda, but stay south of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Life-threatening rip currents will occur along the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Region of Canada.
A strong tropical wave will bring periods of rain to St. Lucia and Barbados, south through Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago. It will very hot today in Jamaica through Puerto Rico.
Another strong tropical wave is coming off the coast of Africa. It could become Tropical Storm Jose, but the early indications are that it will stay out to see.
Please be safe in Cuba (with the flooding rain in Western Cuba) and in Florida. Idalia is strengthening!

The "Swing Around" possibility happens more often than people might think. The wildest swing around Hurricane, in my opinion, was Hurricane Ivan, a Cape Verde Hurricane forming Sept 02, 2004. It did not dissipate until Sept 25th 2004. At one point, it reached Category 5.

This was a perfect name for this storm. In the US Navy, the term "Crazy Ivan" refers to a Soviet Submarine that makes a quick loop around to see what's behind them...
Damage from Ivan was 26.1 Billion in 2004 USD. That's 42.2 Billion in 2023 dollars.
Ranked 10th costliest.
I think this is the most states ever hit by one single hurricane, can't verify through internet yet.
My point is, never take your eyes off of these storms, that can surprise you.

Thank you for that information! I was telling my husband I hope it doesn’t boomerang. I’m from Louisiana. I’ve been through two hurricanes that taught me to be prepared for hurricane season. I’m in Northeast LA, which is further inland, so we don’t get a direct hit, but it’s still scary. A hurricane has to be big, cat 4-5, and/or moving fast in the right direction to hit us.

Ivan destroyed the Cayman Islands and was the worst hurricane in my lifetime!!
Ivan was insane.

Thank you for that timeline at 7:22 I don’t know why almost all forecasters fail to do that. At the peak of high tide for beginning of effects here. Outgoing until 5am the next morning. Already saw a tide today that was higher than usual.

Thanks Brian. It is very refreshing to listen to you talk about Idalia. I have watched other broadcasts which present themselves as knowing exactly what this storm will do. For old timers like me who have grown up in the tropics I know these storms have a mind of their own but I fear all the new Floridians do not understand the current information is more about potential than actuality so if they are even close to the cone they should be wary.
