  • Today we talk about The Marvels, and about being a hater. Overall the film was fine, but it lacked something to make it special. The entire thing started and ended and it felt like the significance of the story was just a checkmark for the MCU story and they didn't push anything major. It was fine, but just fine...

Endgame was the perfect end for the MCU. It now feels like the guy hanging out at the bar after the last call still trying to get laid.

This feels like the old opinion that DBZ should have ended at the Frieza saga. But most of the show's most memorable moments occurred far after.
I think series like Loki show us the MCU has so many more great stories to tell. And this Kang war idea has me so excited.
That being sad, this movie certainly didn't show any of that potential... I just hope they can turn this ship around, because Phase 4 wasn't great...

Hax, please. The release overlap was literally, just a coincidence. And obviously these properties on two different mediums didn't compete with each other.
That being said I like most of what you said. The word that encapsulates this movie was "fine". As a Marvel completionist, it pains me to say it's utterly skippable.
But I do push back on your opinion on Kamala. I loved her performance, and I didn't think her story or genuine joy was cringe.
And as a man who hates Bollywood, I thought the dance number was clever, and just something new to throw in these very familiar movies.
But I'd love to hear your response, if you have the time. Please do more movie reviews!

    • @HaxDogma

Thank you Stan, always love seeing your notes! The overlap was in no way a coincidence. Feels impossible with the planning and money that goes into this stuff. You know? You may be right that they aren't competing, but the comparison was all I thought about since I watched them both on the same day. Feels like one had all the power to make something great, and the other was given just enough to continue the box office ATM machine.
Skippable is such a great word here, and I agree, I love Marvel and want to stay up to date for the next Avengers come together, but this really felt like it added nothing.
Kamala was great, loved the energy, loved the humor, look forward to more of that. Just sometimes it just felt weird to be in proximity to someone you're obsessing over? idk this isn't a major point for me, just more stuff on my brain while writing this :D
The dance scene really didn't bother me, I love dance and I love singing. Just felt like, of course the fem movie needs to include this because masc people are far too uncomfortable for this to be in the bigger films? Really thought it was cool, just funny banter about how I imagined that conversation going with what would market well to a fem audience haha
More movie reviews sounds like a plan :D

I don't think it's likely that the Loki showrunners knew when the marvels was coming out or vice versa, until they saw each other's release ads, too late to change anything.
As a viewer, watching invincible and Loki was way more important than Loki and the marvels
Invincible continues to be great, of course

I feel like these new Marvel movies are getting further and further from what Marvel was until Endgame. Like until Endgame, we had serious characters with serious problems who sometimes made jokes but all in all, they were focusing on solving a bigger issue than themselves and making hard decisions to solve the problem.
Now everything feels off. All the characters seem goofy and make too many jokes and seem too playful. Nothing seems to mean anything anymore. Even in The Marvels when the literal world was being destroyed and the fabric of the universe was being torn apart I couldn’t care less. I think this is mainly because of the characters being so unremarkable. None of them have any outstanding personalities or flaws or anything to make you interested in them, which also makes you less interested in the whole story. Even characters like Nick Fury who was a strict leader and no one dared to say a bad word to him, now is being stripped of this distinctive character trait and is shown making bad jokes and playing with cats. Honestly how far is this man from the Nick Fury in the Avengers movies?
This is what made Loki good. The flaws, the bad decisions, and the despair can be seen in him when everything is falling apart around him even though he did the best he could. This is followed by his ‘awakening’ where he learns to control time slipping because he is so desperate to change the fate of everything and at the end makes a hard decision because he went through this whole journey and learned this is the only way. Not like the new Marvel characters who seem to be the typical good guys who always know what to do and always find a way to a happy end.

Exactly. Why do all the post Endgame movies feel playful. Shang Chi, Wakanda Forever and Guardians3 are the only movies that had stakes but even the, except Guardians, they weren't well done.
I noticed they are trying to hard to appeal to pre teen girls lately, while totally ignoring 90% of their audience

Most MCU movies are just "fine" so I don't get all the hype that Marvel has fallen off a cliff. Financially? Sure. Creatively? Same old, same old. Like most MCU films, it almost instantly evaporates from the mind. I do agree Monica has the potential to be more than a wet nurse to the latest white women in crisis.

@@HaxDogma If post Endgame there was a clear storyline building towards something, anything, then I don't think the backlash would be so severe. But since the MCU is spinning its wheels right now, audiences are less forgiving of its mediocrity. They need a non problematic big bad, as well as a trio of charismatic heroes to lead the fight. I think originally it was supposed to be Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man, but with Chadwick's passing and Captain Marvel being so divisive (and now a flop), that just leaves an in-limbo Spider-Man and I don't believe he can lead an Avengers threat alone. Doctor Strange should be in the mix but he's becoming more of a supporting character with each new appearance. I'm not excited for the X-Men anymore because of how they're presenting Beast, and as much as I enjoy Pedro Pascal, he wouldn't have made it on my short list for Reed. The MCU is a mess and I'm not sure Deadpool 3 can fix it.

While Loki show was really good, for second half of the season I was just "Why the heck does Loki have time powers now?!" Without any explanation he got powers that outclass any time-master including He-who-remains. Remember, all TVA time power runs on timepads and other technology, without it everyone are just humans, including HwR. Yet Loki can time-travel, freeze time around him, revive entire timelines with a touch of hand.
I get it that he destroyed the Loom and became the loom himself, but it was never really clearly explained what the Loom itself does. First it was said the the Loom is the power source for TVA, and with its destruction the TVA will be destroyed. Then we see that the timelines also get spaghettified when loom breaks. Finally we are told that it's a failsafe, it's there to destroy the world and reassemble it again in case HwR dies. But then, well, just blow it up! That's exactly what Loki did. But then we see that without the Loom the timelines start to fade and Loki needs to revive them by, err, holding the timelines in his hands and pumping his green magic into them?.. In the finale, I think, story consistency and in-world rules were sacrificed for wow-effect.
Any my second objection to your video is that while inside Loki things happen a lot, outside of the show the series really does not change a tiniest thing.

I think the movie felt a little disjointed. Like they had to do a bunch of rewrites. That could be because it was tied to Secret Invasion...probably the worst thing Marvel has ever released by a mile, and they had to do a whole lot of rewriting and reshoots to try and fix it. It felt like a movie that was done then they decided to go back and redo and cut and paste. Marvel really needs to stop doing that. They always fall back on the "well we can fix it in post production" crap. If it isn't good the first time chances are it wont be the second time either.

Ironically a much better movie was the one ALLUDED to, namely, destroying the kree, getting married in a marriage of convenience on singing and dancing planet, obviously having more to do with valkyrie since they act like old friends, and of course goose taking out more skrees and saving the day.
What was NOT 'fine' about the movie was the whole point of the movie and how it was blown off, namely, that Captain Marvel basically destroyed not just the war, but the whole society, and the whole plot was used for a 'girl moment' of "sorry I couldn't call you Monica but I'd just destroyed a society and thought you'd hold it against me".
And all the way through the movie that doesnt' seem to bother her one bit, even saying "I don't like that name" of 'annihilator'. Thats Tony Stark level of guilt that was the point of Civil War, but its given no characterization in this movie AT ALL. Its a 'girl film' and a 'fun romp' all about the dancing hero who, by the way, destroyed an entire society and now 'just feels mopey'. The fact is that she's NOT the hero in this at all until the end, but again, thats nowhere in the script.
Had this come out just after Civil War most people would be liek "WTF just happened". Its main saving grace has been that ALL marvel movies have been so crappy that this one is not bad by comparison.
So what is really bad is that so many people are hating on it just because they are all women in it pretty much, but hardly any criticism like this of the actual movie which is, well said, 'just fine'. When you spend THAT kind of money on a movie, 'just fine' shouldn't be what you were going for.
At least when I saw Captain Marvel I coudl tell people that it was a GROWN UPS movie, where the female lead (who is supposedly so powerful) is captured in the first ten minutes and literally mind raped. It also wasn't a great movie, but it was far better than Endgame, where the plot was superheroes inventing a time machine in a weekend. I coudl tell people at least CA had a more grown up plot than a giant purple sock who needs five magic rocks to disappear half the population.
THIS movie, to all the haters all we have is 'its just fine'. And "at least its not as bad as 'the eternals'.

Unpopular opinion: I liked the Marvels better than the finale of Loki. I found that a bit confusing and only liked it better after a re-watch. I did not have the feeling Nick Fury was helpless during the movie. He was just not at the center of the action, and in the end he saved everyone with the Flerken manouver. And Captain Marvel had only destroyed a dangerous AI. If you stopped Chat GP, would you seriously consider that this would damn the earth? She could not know this would lead to the destruction of the whole planet. This was definitely not intentional, and I think there was no way she could have expected that. And Kamala Khan seemed very much like a teenager to me, not an adult woman. And I could sympathise with her being star-struck. And Monica was in no way enabling bad behaviour. It seems to me, that we watched different movies.
And I also don't think it was intentional, that Loki and The Marvels were out the same day. There were probaly different people who scheduled the movies and Disney+. 2 years ago, they wanted to have 5 films and 6 shows every year, with plenty of overlap. I'm glad, they did not do that.

    • @HaxDogma
      @HaxDogma  7 месяцев назад

Oh I agree entirely, she is not solely responsible for the planet's civil war. But she did kill the thing that was keeping them alive and thriving so she is a little bit on the hook for that. Not enough to make the entire drama with her not going home about that, but that's what they did so we have to take this at face value, she feels responsible for the planet's civil war. Which is why this felt so ridiculous to me!
Kamala Khan can act like a teenager, but she looks like an adult woman, and she is an adult woman. I wrote fan-fiction for InuYasha, I can sympathize too, we're weird and that's okay now. But yeah writing about someone you'll never meet, and then being this obsessed with someone directly in front of you are two very different things to me. Which is why I think this felt so weird, to me!
The overlap may not be intentional but nothing was happening this week (one week after both launched) why not have one of these airing today? Like nothing new came out today!

The ending of Loki, or even the whole season of Loki was very arbitrary, with characters knowing what they're supposed to before they could have heard any context on what their new information means
