- We analyse the [HDR Calibration] settings in GTA 5 (Grand Theft Auto V), & found the default values to be overly bright, causing the HDR presentation to look washed out.
Using a Canon reference monitor with inbuilt HDR analysis toolkit, we demonstrate how to get a better HDR picture with improved pop and depth on your TV (ideally with HGiG support) in GTA V.

We need videos like this for every HDR compatible game! Most games have HDR calibration menus that are useless or utterly broken
I don't know why the Xbox have a HGiG configuration menu and games have others inside.
Vincent needs an onlyfans or patreon. I’d sign up for it
Keep it up with every new game Vincent. We need your experience.
Totally agree
Cyberpunk video after new update will be awesome for us.
I have to say HDR has been an absolute pain in the proverbial when it comes to gaming. I love the increased contrast when everything is just right but goddamn I shouldn't have ot rely on an expert to analyse a game and tell me how to adjust hdr settings for individual games when I have a professionally calibrated tv and a console that has had it's hdr settings set to match the tv. Thanks for this video Vincent & for all the others you've put out for the PS5 and big release games, you're a bloody legend. Only youtuber for whom my youtube notifications bell tolls.
P.S. Gib aw3423dw review pls
Agreed. And the lingo to understand the calibration settings in games has gotten more confusing over time as well. It used to be that you had to match brightness with a logo that could barely be seen or something. Now it's like "HDR tonemapping midpoint" and "paper white" and I have frankly no idea what that means and what those settings should be. How white is a paper? What does tonemapping midpoint of 1.6 even mean?
on windows, hdr looks fine in games if you have auto hdr enabled, but the system itself (gui, settings menu etc. actually everything apart from videos and games) looks pretty much washed out
Sony and MS should force devs to develop HDR with hgig in mind
I think that most developers still haven't figured out how to properly implement an HDR calibration menu. Take Doom Eternal for example: there are 5 (five) sliders in the HDR calibration menu and no reference pattern. How am I supposed to know if I calibrated the game correctly?!
HDR itself is not the "problem" you believe it is.
The problem is that the Sony PS4/Pro, PS5 and Microsoft XboxesX are ALL CAPABLE OF HDR and thus have a built in calibration setting for HDR values yet most game developers, especially multi platform game devs ADD an additional HDR configuration setting INSTEAD of using the console's built in calibration settings.
THEN, it does not help that the average HDR capable HDTVs have different values and may need to have said values calibrated so we end up with possibly THREE different HDR settings to double check... and then there is the advice from a professional calibratior of HDR HDTVs that may or may not agree completely to your eyes.
This is why it's useful to be aware of how to change the and calibrate the HDR settings... once you know, you only have to worry about the particular game that may have screwed up HDR default settings.
Also this is bad for Rockstar Games because iirc they should have already shipped an HDR game with Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4/Pro and XboneX... therefore since 2018 Rockstar Games should have experience with HDR... nevermind that they kept releasing patches for GTA V so that it works on PS4 Pro and XboneX to run at higher resolutions and allegedly in HDR so this new issue with GTA V for PS5 and XbSX seems like Rockstar Games just dropped the ball.
Your gaming focused content is really appreciated! Thanks Vincent, for all the hard work.
Nice one Vinnie!
HDR continuing to be an inconsistent mess. 5+ yrs in to HDR and its still not always an upgrade as it should be
It’s not HDR itself that’s the issue it’s gaming developers not knowing how to properly incorporate it.
@@jayroman3384 Game developers, TV manufacturers advertising HDR with less than 800nits TVs, streaming services with different HDR quality...it's a mess really. A friend with a Sony X90J kept asking me about the HDR settings and just told him to turn off HDR in the PS5 menu and enjoy, I know HDR looks better if properly set but I'm not Geek Squad.
@@jayroman3384 The problem Is HDR... there are multiple implementations when there should only be one by now. The game devs understand hardware can be different and people set their hardware up differently hence the menu options in games to calibrate them. Hardware and content manufacturers/producers would have been wise to agree a better baseline for HDR early on. However Samsungs been the only major player to spend the first oled era touting their lack of brightness while making their TVs go twice as bright and then some so they are going to have wanted high mastering peaks whereas their main competitor and rival cant get close in HDR peaks and has to compromise by lowering the APL to a point where HDR loses almost all useful impact because the entire picture level can often look dull for the sake of say a pointless background light that no one even needs to look at. It is a sh1t show and the consumers have lost big time with HDR thus far when it should have been a massive universal upgrade for all by now by simply not chasing unnecessary nits/brightness levels.
@@tomwebb7091 nah. Again, it’s developers not HDR. Both Xbox and PS5 support HGIG. It’s up to game developers to actually utilize it, so that in game hdr settings should be a thing of the past. Don’t blame hdr when there’s solutions to deal with the issue, but game developers aren’t taking advantage of them.
@@jayroman3384 HDR IS the problem. Im not just talking about games. If you cant see why a pointless 4000 nit mastering, hell even a 1000 nit one goes to waste and looks way below par on the best TV for gaming ie an LG oled then dont bother typing any further
Always on point. Right when I booted this game up I knew the HDR looked way too washed out. I messed with the settings myself and they were still off but closer to what you had. I appreciate the video.
Thank you for making HDR simple and easy to understand I greatly appreciate your work!
You are, by far, the most informative channel for calibrations. Thanks, man... it is appreciated, greatly
Nice to see that you are fallowing the hype and give gamers tips like this! Very useful thanks!
Brilliant work Vincent, much appreciated. I was using 200 for paper white, your settings have drastically improved the image.
Thank you so much! I haven't been able to see anything in the dark in this game on my LG OLED, and this video helped me understand what all these HDR settings mean
I have an LG C1 and personally think HGIG is too dark for most games so I keep tone mapping on unless it’s absolutely horrible. But with tone mapping on I’ve found that contrast at 55 gave me the best results. 80 was too blown out for my preference. 220 paper white and 800 peak brightness.
I post this in case anyone has this doubt but if I’m wrong please correct me: When gaming on Series X with Dolby Vision there’s no HGiG setting, but iirc there’s no need for HGiG as Dolby Vision is getting the dynamic metadata straight from the console in every game, so it adjusts itself to the correct values HGiG would get you in plain HDR10, so it would just need the in-game settings Vincent mentions in the video. Thank you so much for the vid Vincent, Digital Foundry also does a fantastic job to know which graphical settings are the most optimal in every game but lack the knowledge and equipment you have for the HDR calibration settings, I think a lot of us come quickly *ding* to both your vids :)
Thank you so much!!
Can you please do an updated tutorial for Cyberpunk 1.5 PS5?
omg thank you so much, i turned on HDR on my monitor and tried playing around for hours, your gta v settings cleared up my inputs so much it looks great now the real HDR and not washed out
Contrast 80
Paper white 220
800 nits
This gives me the best HDR peak brightness on my LG C1 Oled in real gameplay, not on paper or theoretically numbers.
80/240/800
on LG CX
Looks incredible 😍
I was reading Reddit posts about it and people spent so much time messing around with it. I’m perfectly happy with what i got from this quick video that was to the point and not drawn out. Now, I’m gonna go play gta 5. Cheers.
Thanks Vincent. I appreciate the accuracy, but these settings lack pop on my LG C9. I much rather use the @GamingTech setting: contrast 80, paperwhite 230, peak brightness 800. Maybe not as accurate, but I think the overall picture better suits the world of GTA.
I'm absolutely with you on this. Paper White at 130 is waaaay to dark. I'm using an LG C9 and when it comes to the night missions you cannot see whats going on, even when in a pitch black room. I wish Vincent would actually play these games after he's posted the videos and he'd actually see that it's just too dark to be able to make out what's going on. I have Paper White set at 250.
@@MrDogtown22 just increase tv brightness?
Would have been nice to see what the custom HDR settings looked like during a night time scene 🌃
They look horrible at night. Unplayable. At least when I tried them on my Sony OLED.
You are a God amongst men.
Small g buddy small g.
@@khobia2 lol true
I would love an HDR video on Destiny 2 The Witch Queen. Bungie revamped the in game HDR controls and now people are having a hard time getting a good HDR picture again. Especially those with LG OLEDs like myself.
Yeah I just turned off HDR at that point. The image I had was super washed out so I went back to SDR.
@@Burgergio I actually have a really good image again by turning the midpoint to 0 but I want to see what's actually going on and if I have the best settings. I'm pretty happy with how it is now but with the default midpoint I agree it is incredibly washed out and not worth playing like that.
Nice to see! I also thought the sample picture looked overly bright when trying to adjust the parameters. Could you make this sort of videos for Demon's Souls Remake and Spider-Man/Miles Morales on PS5 too? In some specific levels I think my Demon's Souls looks overly black, but I preferred to leave it on default settings for now.
🙏 please continue doing more analysis in other games
I knew GTA V was too bright upon loading it up because I watched your Horizon Forbidden West HDR video and knew what to look for. Thank you so much for doing these videos for these HDR games!
Best channel when it comes to settings and information, keep it up and may the one who sees all bless your soul!
I noticed it when I first started playing on my Series X. I turned my contrast to 50, paperwhite to 250 and peak brightness to 1500 and that seemed to work. Pretty much a perfect balance that allows you to see all the detail in the sky and around the ground, without washing anything out. I have a 2000 nit set, so 1500 works for me. The paper white is what I found made the biggest difference. Once that was that right, I noticed a bunch of detail that was missing before.
204 is technically the spec for Hdr content. Your TV sounds very capable so maybe worth trying 200. It's mostly dependent on your room if you have a lot of headroom to get that pop effect with higher average brightness levels so it may not matter but give it a go
@@beachkid843 what's 204?

I studied this technologie and it’s my work now. But damn, your video’s are more advanced then all the shit we’ve ever learned in school.
Some people say when I’m doing a job for them somethin like: “damn how’d u know al this. I understand it now but do not expect me to repeat anything what you juist said”.
At those moments I always think: well there’s one man. And he is a true god on this subject.
I Reccomended your video’s to some of the people I work with. it’s always nice to have a quick head’s up before doing a job. So your video’s are helpfull in my professional life. When I frogot something myself, then there’s you to explain it to me in a way it couldn’t be better. And when i come back from a day of work and I startup my ps5 with a Bravia tv. What I’m willing to say: Doing good things man. Really apprecciate te efford u put in al this videos. Keep it going man!
Oh, yup, this definitely made the HDR performance of GTA V on my LG B9 way better. With standard settings it was kind of cartoonish-looking but now the colors look far more reasonable.
I’ve been waiting for you guys to do this, you’re always my reference guide for HDR settings.
this comment is just for myself to check back in the future, so please ignore it

This guy is an absolute genius! Helped me choose a 65” A90J a few months back. Best telly ever!
I was waiting for this video! What should my HDR settings be for the Sony X900H?
Thanks, looks more realistic inside, and bright spots stand out more outside.
So for example on the sony X900H I should use:
Contrast: 100
Paper white: 130
Peak brightness: 1000
I have tried these settings and the picture looks better.
You might need to lower the paper white a little more, because at peak brightness of 1000, a paper white of 130 will still push it to 1100 nits
@@Yogarine oh really, around 120?
@@showman9690 Yeah, maybe lower even. I put Paper White at 100 on my TV (also an X900H :D) and that seems to look fine. Unfortunately I don't have a monitor with built in brightness graph to see the actual values. :(
@@Yogarine alright i will try it, thanks for the advice!
Thank you HDTV Test 😁
While I appreciate your videos that detail what settings do what and what works best, I personally find that having to constantly adjust games for the best HDR to be both confusing and tedious. I never know whether what I am seeing is actually what the developer intended!!! Not only do we have to adjust the game settings but there's also settings in the TV as well for tone mapping! Sometimes I adjust a game to the recommended settings but it looks too dark and the HDR impact is reduced over the standard settings on my LG B9 OLED using HGIG. Sometimes switching to DTM on over HGIG looks brighter and has more "pop" but I am told that isn't how it should look. So confusing really.
I thought HGIG was supposed to take all the hassle out of using HDR in console games? If anything it has just made it more complicated as very few games actually support this so you still have the major inconvenience of having to adjust up to three sliders for HDR in the games. There really needs to be some kind of simplification for HDR for games in my opinion. This isn't new tech any more so it should be more user-frieldnly than this. After all, when I'm watching a movie I only have to worry about having the correct picture mode selected as the TV takes care of everything else and no further messing around is necessary on a per-movie basis; no fiddling around with multiple sliders to get a decent HDR movie experience! So why are games different? Why can we not have the simplicity of HDR movies for games as well?
I'd wager that 99.99% of people playing games on 4K HDR TVs are just using the default game setting as they know no better. The other 0.01% of us the ones hopelessly confused about what are actually the right settings to use!
Just don’t worry about it and play the game
@@aadamkhan5217 😂😂💀💀
My tv doesn't even have tone mapping or HGIG but I used Vincent's settings and the game looks better than I've ever seen it look before. Just live with the uncertainty.
Looks like you had rough night. Party on Vincent!
Even without these settings, I think the HDR implementation in HGiG looks great. Thank you for these HDR settings videos, Vincent.
I've been waiting for this video, thanks :)
Great guide. With these settings game finally stop being oversaturated.
I know it's a little late, but I would like to have Vincent's take on Ghost of Tsushima's HDR presentation. I have everything set correctly, but whenever I go inside a house, the black crush is insane.
Could be your TV settings because I don't have that issue at all and I have brightness in game set 1 click lower than default
Again, we need a colaboration of you and DF about HDR games visuals 🛐
one thing which i don't get is way you allways presume that everyone has an lg tv -oled...when most of us (18% of total tv sales) own a samsung tv-lcd tv
For me, thermal seems VERY bright, the minimap is so bright I can barely see my out of sight radius and when I look at the player character list everyone's character looks as if there is zero contrast.
Now, those issues aside, my game Looks beautiful outside of therm. This leaves me stumped.
Just got my C1 and as an avid GTA player this was excellent.
Thank god this channel exists, cheers Vincent
I always like going down till I find the right spot 😉
Found these settings on my x900e made the game look more realistic. I had it on 80 contrast, 200 paper white, 750 peak and I though it looked natural but when I revert back to them it looked more like a video game.
Hey, why you had 750 peak brightness? i have that Tv too ( along with the x90j ) , and the x90e have around 800 nits, you can go to 850 without much problem on the image.
Can i ask the settings you use now? same as Vicent?
I think this game is extremely bright to the point of hurting my eyes even on 200 paper white
@@miguelsanto8123 I used 750 because that's what most game calibrations lead me to use. I now use Vincent's settings. 100 contrast, 130-140 Paper white and 800 peak. Paper white and contrast are more important than peak brightness in this game from what I've seen. Use those settings and your game will look so much more natural. Looks more realistic to me. If you have trouble calibrating, I'd suggest you keep peak brightness at 700-800 and then just mess with contrast and paper white accordingly keeping contrast at 80-100 and paper white at 130-200 rasing contrast as you lower paper white .
Omg thank you so much the game doesn’t look to bright or to dark just on point thank you so much
I did it. I finally caved in and bought a new tv. Sony X90J 55" for $925. I watched the first race of F1 on Sunday running on the X90J and my 11 year old 43" faux 120hz 1080p Westinghouse simultaneously and all I have to say is... 😱🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🥴😵💫😵💫. I spent countless and countless and countless of times calibrating the picture on the Westinghouse for soooo long and the default setting on the Sony just destroyed it. Just... wow!!! It reminds me of that Simpson episode where Millhouse buys that video game and turned out to be the most awesome game ever.. and all he did was just enter his name. It's that same feeling.
Vincent always showing the truth with clarity. Thank you sir!
Back at it again with solid content that we need , thank you brother 🙏
Thanks! Everything in this game is blown out with the default hdr
Thank you for this, I've not played this game since 2012, thoroughly enjoying it in Performance RT mode!
😂 This game came out in 2013 and you haven't played it since 2012? Whaaat! 😂
Great video you should do more games, Mass Effect Legendary Edition would be great, the HDR/lighting etc. looks off so unsure what settings are best.
For sony XF90 i find settings 80-200-1000 is the sweet spot for HDR pop.
When paper white is on 130 it feels muted as if there is always some thick but still transparent cloud letting some of the sunrays through and thus the map making it "bright" but quite "muted" while on 180-200 looks very dynamic where there are specular highlights all over the place and then there is this vibrant average brightness level while dark spots still being as dark.
I have xf90 and have set 85,140,1000 looks nice
It's also personal preference
@@jtPrime yes I settled on 80,180,1000

So 130 paper white for 800 nits in GTA V. What’s the proper paper white for other games@800nits? Does it vary wildly from game to game?
204 but a lot of games have quirks so that's not always the case. 100 to 230 is usually fine

HDR settings are all broken over all the places in the gaming industry.
Now we know how bad they actually are thanks to HDRVTest.
Vincent, does that 130 paper white setting only work for that 800nits?
If i up the X90H to 1000nits will i have to raise that paper white setting?
Or just stick everything like you did and adjust the overall nits?
Edit.
Is 1000 appropriate for the X90H?
Or closer to 950 which i think is 15 clicks on the PS5 calibration.
I have the X900H and tried the 100 contrast, 130 paper white and 1000 peak brightness and the image looks much better now, but i still confuse🤔

Vincent what about Dolby vision engaged? Do I just set it to 1000nits, 130 paper white and 100 contrast on a LG CX?
No, 800 nits. Dolby Vision doesn't matter.
@@kiisseli1337 Of course it matters. In many games you have to set it to 1000nits in Dolby instead of 800nits on regular HDR on LG Oleds.

we need another look at you on Destiny 2 HDR...it looks horrible washed out since the latest Witchqueen expansion and no one seems to be able to make the picture look right
Paperwhite I can never get right. I have an older LG c7 that doesn't support either hgig or dynamic tone mapping. But 1000 peak brightness always seems to be the optimum setting in every game. But I find paperwhite varies a lot game to game. I understand a lower value is better to achieve a better contrast and brighter specular highlights on oleds. Seems between 150-200 is optimum on my set for this game
So my monitor has a brightness of 300 nits does that mean I adjust peak brightness to 0?
I would love a quick confirmation for this…
I would personally just disable* HDR in that case
i just started playing gta online last week and it does look amazing but i did realize HDR was off a bit. i just left it at default hoping this video would come out soon
