    To answer all of you wondering if this was a tsunami or not:
    Tsunami wave is HORIZONTAL wave that moves HORIZONTALLY.
    Regular, every day, "beach" waves are all VERTICAL water movements.
    So, the size DOES NOT determine if a wave is tsunami or not. The MOVEMENT of the water does.

    What is amazing is actually seeing airborne shock waves, not from the explosion itself, but actually BOUNCING off the ships. The overpressure must have been HUGE. And this was NOT a 200k bomb. It was actually quite small; something like 20k, a size mostly used now only as a trigger for much more powerful thermonuclear devices.

And the wave itself....no harm really for a normal swimmer as they were so tiny and it didnt went deep onto the shore.....so literally no power in that wave at all. Even natural, normal waves depending on where it hits the shores, are more dangerous and people surf in them. I would say, that even on a bad day for waves, a hawaii wave just 4 m high has more energy stored in it than this one :) It doesnt even much a natural wave.

    Of note, the "tsunami" did not cause the shoreline water to recede in any noticeable manner prior to the "waves" (ripples) arriving upon shore. This singular fact gives me reason to believe/conclude the body (ocean) absorbed the majority of the force exerted by the detonation without displacing it exponentially upon the nearest land mass. This differs GREATLY from what one might expect when comparing the results of a (relatively) minor subsurface landslide resulting from an earthquake. Cool footage which causes many (errant?) presumptions/conclusions into scientific/mathematical question.

    Awesome and informative video as always. Studying the physics of tsunami waves and earthquakes fascinates me. What amazes me is, even the largest nuclear detonations, while they could create a large wave, cannot even come close to the tsunami waves produced by a large earthquake. It demonstrates how the energy of natural events still dwarf man's most powerful weapons. The amount of water displacement from the 2011 Japan 9.0 Earthquake was truly staggering. The estimated total energy of the earthquake, or moment magnitude was equivalent to about 9 teratons of TNT.

    • @mikebrown614
      @mikebrown614 7 лет назад +9

      Tom, you're overwrought. No one understates the potential hazards of nuclear power, but fossil fuels have caused far more death and destruction than nuclear, to date. Likewise, "green" power solutions cannot be said to have clean hands when it comes to adverse effects on the environment.
      Your allusions to cancer, a "dead Pacific Ocean" and massive animal die-offs from nuclear energy hasn't happened, nor will it, unless you consider the possibility of mass-casualties from nuclear attack a "die-off" of animals.
      If nuclear energy was anywhere near the lethal danger you claim it to be, then both Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have had 100% fatality rates (they did not) and neither city would be habitable today.
      You don't advance your cause by shouting hyperbole in all-caps. Ad hominem doesn't help, either................

    • @storm12weather
      @storm12weather 7 лет назад +12

      Tom Dilex OK first off, chill out. I didn't dump nuclear waste in your backyard. Second, I was talking about it from a science/physics standpoint. Awesome means to inspire awe, I think that fits well here. Nuclear energy is not even close to the most polluting energy source we have either. Please educate yourself before insulting people.

    • @mikebrown614
      @mikebrown614 7 лет назад +3

      Brett, I think Tom might have just been caught up in the propaganda and needs to take some time to study actual science on the subject.
      Too often, people (young people, especially) have been indoctrinated by groups that have ulterior motives and hidden agendas that are arrayed against human development and advancement. When I talk to some of those people from my experience with both nuclear power and nuclear weapons, I find that there is a major knowledge deficit on the part of the debater. Indeed, the anti-nuclear activists appear to be the most ill-informed group of protesters in the western world.
      Once both sides of the issue are fully-informed of the facts and the science, I firmly believe we can have a reasoned discussion of the advantages and pitfalls of nuclear power, as well as the realities of nuclear weapons (a genie out of the bottle) and their potential effects on humanity and the environment at large.........

    • @storm12weather
      @storm12weather 7 лет назад +1

      Tom Dilex I'm not sure what the weight of the little boy device vs the weight of a nuclear reactor has to do with this conversation. The little boy device was a bomb, a nuclear reactor is not built to explode. I'm not implying that nuclear energy doesn't have risks, most energy sources do, but the environmental impact from coal, natural gas, and oil far exceeds that of nuclear energy. There have only been 3 incidents where radiation escaped from a reactor. #1 Chernobyl was a Soviet plant that had nowhere near the safety features of its modern day counterparts. #2 Three Mile Island was a partial meltdown and no radiation escaped the containment dome. #3 Fukushima is the only instance of radiation escaping a modern day nuclear plant and it was due to it being inundated with a massive Tsunami. Even so, the radiation that escaped has nowhere near the environment or human impact that occurs from the buring of fossil fuels. The pollution of which has a profound impact on the climate as well as leads to millions of pollution related deaths a year. Nuclear energy is not the perfect process to create power, but it's a good stepping stone on our path to cleaner, renewable energy.

    • @mikebrown614
      @mikebrown614 7 лет назад +4

      The half-life of a radioactive particle is irrelevant, as is the amount of isotopes released into the environment. At Fukishima both atmospheric and seawater releases are going directly out to sea, where they are immediately diluted to levels near background. As with most things, "Dilution is the Solution".
      Regarding tidal pools in California, the cause of any die-off there is likely de-oxygenation from heat and excessive nutrients (rotting vegetation, sewage and agricultural runoff) The idea that radioactive isotopes from Japan are crossing the Pacific to kill fish in California is preposterous.
      Also, the "explosions" at the Fukishima plant were expanding-vapor releases from the primary and secondary cooling loops. While the vapor carried radioactive isotopes the events were not "nuclear explosions".

    The actual dangerous part of the explosion was the base surge, the white cloud hugging the surface of the water and seen here slowly enveloping the warships. Unlike the earlier Able Shot, the radioactive fallout was not dispersed but concentrated in the sea spray and ended up painting the target fleet. The intensity of radioactivity was greatly underestimated at this point, and attempts to clean and reuse the surviving target vessels continued for some time.

If u do have a source to confirm this, then how come this isnt a known occurence of genocide in US military history?
      Surely, if a casual yt user such as you has the informed credibility to assure folks that that boat u just watched a video of for the first time was actually manned during this routine test blast..SURELY others must know about this shocking historical event.. And if it was knowledge that was readily available enough for you to get a hold of, then there would be no need to share it, because it would be equally accessible by the rest of us too. THAT IS SO BIG!!!!!!!! But, Also..Awesome and informative video as always. Studying the physics of tsunami waves and earthquakes fascinates me. What amazes me is, even the largest nuclear detonations, while they could create a large wave, cannot even come close to the tsunami waves produced by a large earthquake. It demonstrates how the energy natural events still dwarf man's most powerful weapons. The amount of water displacement from the 2011 Japan 9.0 Earthquake was truly staggering.

      Cause Mos as far as I can tell from some cursory research on U.S. copyright law, works created by an employee or officer on behalf of the U.S. government that are created under that officer/employees' official duties are not copyrightable according to 17 USC 105 (barring a few exceptions). As long the creator of a work that contains a work by U.S. government includes their own original content in conjunction with the government work, then the creator may claim copyright on that work.
      I think.

    This is doctored somehow. You can see the top and bottom half of the screen split during detonation. The famous detonation of shot Baker above, and a different beach on the bottom. The rest looks normal, but watch near the ships at the moment of detonation, and you can see the water is still and the closer water is moving with ripples. What's up with that?
