  • Remastered Nuclear testing video
In 1958, during the Cold War, the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union was intensifying. The United States conducted a series of nuclear tests in the Pacific Marshall Islands under the codename "Operation Hardtack I." This test series included 35 nuclear tests, aimed at examining various nuclear weapon designs and explosion conditions. Among these tests was one named "Umbrella," a notable underwater nuclear test.
    Test Details
Test Name: Operation Hardtack I - Umbrella
    Test Date: June 8, 1958
    Location: Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands
    Yield: 8 kilotons of TNT
Explosion Depth: Approximately 150 meters underwater
    Test Objectives
The primary objective of the Umbrella test was to study the effects of an underwater nuclear explosion on naval ships and the marine environment. This included understanding the propagation of shock waves in water, radiation dispersion.
    Test Results
The Umbrella test successfully detonated a nuclear device with a yield of 8 kilotons of TNT. The explosion created a massive water column, and the shock wave propagated through the water, causing significant damage to nearby ship structures and equipment. Unlike above-ground nuclear explosions, no mushroom cloud was observed due to the underwater detonation.
    Tsunami Potential
The Umbrella test did not trigger a tsunami. Although underwater nuclear explosions generate intense shock waves and water disturbances, they do not typically cause the conditions necessary for a large-scale tsunami. Tsunamis are usually triggered by earthquakes or large-scale underwater landslides that result in massive water displacement. While nuclear explosions are powerful, their energy release is relatively localized and insufficient to cause the extensive water movement needed to form a tsunami.
    Impact and Assessment
The Umbrella test provided substantial data on the effects of underwater nuclear explosions, which were crucial for the U.S. Navy’s research on protection and combat strategies in a nuclear warfare scenario.
In summary, the Umbrella test of Operation Hardtack I was a significant military experiment, offering valuable insights into the effects of underwater nuclear explosions. This test played an important role in advancing the understanding of underwater detonations and their implications for naval operations and defense strategies.

There is a ship just under the channels annotation on screen. Looks like it's sitting right over the bomb, but could be behind it also.
Somewhere in the 31 second mark a flash of light can be seen (1 frame only) on the ship. I'm guessing this is the science ship and showing detonation zero time. [Pause the video (space bar) and use the (,) or (.) to step frames forward or back]

Crazy to think there's still hundreds of test videos out there that haven't been released to the public yet. Or the film has been damaged.

This is a relatively low yield shot. Puts things in perspective when compared to the 2011 Japanese tsunami. The amount of energy released by that quake and the ensuing rush of water makes this explosion/transfer of energy look like a bug fart.

Hey ATC ! At roughly 31.8 seconds, frame 955, right before the explosion, there is a small ball of light on the ocean surface. You can even see it in the old footage you uploaded 8 years ago. Do you know if it is the actual detonation or is it some device on the boat that blew up ?
    Incredible footage, as always !
