Nuclear Test Film Highlights - Restored Footage, New Films, Epic Explosions

- This five-minute video showcases a handful of the 1,054 (official) United States nuclear tests that have taken place since 5:29 a.m. on July 16th, 1945. Much of the first half of this video is newly declassified material, recently released. The second half progresses toward lesser-known sequences, finishing off with footage that has been in the hands of the original videographer for decades. Many of these films were scratched, dusty, and exhibited significant color fading. Those have been restored to the best of my (admittedly novice) ability.

Something cool: If you pause the video at ~:26 and watch the first second or two of Tumbler-Snapper Able at 1/4 speed, you can actually see the air-dropped device falling before it detonates.

Holy fuck you are right..... only now did i see the palm trees in front of IT and that really gives you idea of the scale of the Fireball.....another good ones were where they showed tanks/vehicles on the ground near ground Zero as well as that underwater "Baker" shot where you could see ships near ground zero

I have been an atomic footage freak ever since trinity and beyond came out, but this far and away the best atomic bomb footage I've ever seen, and I've seen damn near every film declassified. DAMN GOOD STUFF

Peter, I completely agree. I don't find the Bomb fascinating because it can kill everyody. I find is fascinating because it's just GOOD PHYSICS. The H Bomb program, in particular, has been responsible for many technological advances we now take for granted. Color film, for one, as developed by EG&G to better help understand the visual phenomena of the detonations. Digital computers are another one. The M.A.N.I.A.C. computer used by Los Alamos was one of the, if not the actual, very first digital computers, used in this case to run massively complicated calculations to determine fission and fusion reaction cross sections and the likelihood that the liquid deuterium or lithium deuteride would react to the primary's radiation pulse. Teflon is another, invented to protect the thermal diffusion cascades from uranium hexafluoride gas used in HEU production at Oak Ridge in Tennessee.. There are many others, as well.

I did not know half of those were related to Nukes but then we didn’t learn much in High School. There was always some jackass disrupting the class. The only think I learned that was useful was how to type.
3:17 is my favourite because due to being able to see the coastline I could appreciate the scale of the weapon. This is something I struggle to do with most videos like this.

Castle Bravo must have been sheer terror to witness first hand. The oops factor is off the charts.
A man I worked for named Allen Winslow actually witness The Castle bravo test. He said everybody on that boat was scared shitless. If that footage is from the observation boat realize that the boat (a Navy destroyer) is 40 miles from the detonation point. He said it felt like somebody had a heat lamp right in front of his face and he had to squint even though he was wearing a mask. He said then the control room started counting back as the pressure wave came across the ocean. He said you could actually see it as it was coming. After that he said the whole boat was blown completely over and back and that is ears popped from the vacuum difference. I can't imagine anything more terrifying or thrilling...
I knew a Naval officer who saw the same from 600 miles away. He said it looked like the sun rose in the west for a full 20 seconds.

Those aren't tanks, those are full size navy ships sitting on the water. The scale and size of those mushroom clouds are sometimes incomprehensible, unless you have a frame of reference, once you realize those are navy ships, you start of get a grasp.

1. The only way you are right on this is if Los Alamos is wrong. You're welcome to look into it further. The specific source information you would need is: The EG&G Scientific Film Collection at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Operation Upshot-Knothole, Annie, Film No. 17082 titled "House #1 - Blast," 16 KT Tower, March 17, 1953.

Possibly you're correct on No. 1. I'm going by AtomCentral/VCE visually, which matches up to Apple II 1955. Kuran did state in 2015 that many film cans from LM and elsewhere were labeled in error, Dr. Spriggs over at Livermore also implied the same or one of his assistants did. The only video I know of Knothole-Annie 1953 where it contains the audio of a before/during/after of the shot. It's good that all those old films are getting sorted out over time, though. It's a lot further in it's corrections compared to just a few years ago.
3:20 is almost certainly Greenhouse Dog. I did some research a few months back when people were arguing over it on another video. Here is my copy/pasted response from those comments:
It's Greenhouse Dog, not George. Dog was detonated at the north end of Runit island. The camera is south of Runit looking north across the island to ground zero. Search for Runit on Google Maps and you'll see the exact shape of the island in the video, with that little sweeping bay. You can see the fireball sweep over the far tip of Runit, just like it looks on Google maps. George was detonated on Ebiriru which does not look like anything like what we see in the video.
If the second one really IS Greenhouse Easy, thats very interesting. GE was the proof test of the TX-5D bomb, a major advance in weight reduction for implosion bombs. Weight was 2700 lb with a 40 inch diameter, compared to 10,000 lb and a 60 inch diameter for earlier designs. It used the 92 point (92 lens) implosion system and a composite (plutonium/oralloy) core. This design was used as the primary in Ivy Mike.

Castle Bravo is the most impressive test ever staged,you could make any nation think twice just by sending them the footage, wether they would admit it or not.
I love Grable's explosion at 3:33 starts off stellar blue and once it cools markedly, it dims to white and then yellow followed by orange and red as it continues to cool.
I hope they get these colors right in the Oppenheimer movie and not just do the typical "white flash followed by yellow" deal
@@Chris11249 Many cameras use red filters to dim the blue light. Otherwise, you'd not be able to see anything, the whole screen would be white as if it were blank. This was especially true with the multi-megaton yield hydrogen tests in the Pacific.

In almost all cases, they were nowhere near the detonations/cameras. They were operated remotely.

@0:28 Tumbler-Snapper is only 1kt. It's truly a "baby-nuke". Also extremely rare to actually see one fly in on a missile instead of being mounted to some kind of platform.
Even at that small yield it's something to see how different the action of atomic weapons are compared to actually detonating 1K of traditional TNT.
These Restored Detonations are incredible and beautiful to watch. The only knoxk, was tge ending of Titles describing Test Name and Yield.
What these retouched footage reveals is not simply the massive scale of the size of fireballs, but the incomprehensible amount of energy that is released. The Dominic footage reveals this where ball of plasma comes seemingly out of nowhere and is so insanely hot, expanding under such an incredible pressure differential with the surrounding air, and elevating as fast as it can make its way through the ever thinning atmosphere, that it’s hitting multiple physical limits by simply being on planet Earth. amazing.

Why are atomic/nuclear detonations so damn hypnotic?
I found watching this video to be a real "blast."
Compared to other RUclips uploads, this one's the "bomb!"
One certainly gets a "bang" for their buck.
Start to finish, this film "radiates" interest.
Simply put, it just "blew" me away.
My neighbours surely heard my "outbursts" of awe.
Half way through, i realized, subconsciously, I was holding my breath, had to pause, and allow the "discharge" of air, so I could continue breathing.
From me, the "fallout" will be nothing but positive, when recommending this film to others, because compared to most YT videos, this one, is
"ground zero," by countless
"shock wave-lengths."
Seriously, though, Jesus! Some of these look like they've been trapped for 1000's of yrs. and they're breathing life back into themselves, especially the last 3 or 4. The very last one, seemingly in b/w, if you stare at it long enough, as it billows it seems to reveal the identities of every victim it has ever vaporized.
.......and that's the oxymoron: a scene of total destruction and one step beyond death: anything that was a victim, now, is non-existent. Yet, somehow, one of the most beautiful and engaging sights, the eye will ever see.

I love the music in and of itself, and to revel in the power of this weaponry in reference to no target. But in reference to targets, the music is at best ironic, showing how some people excessively glorify the bomb and inflate it’s deterrent power. Overestimating the deterrent power of nuclear weapons could lead to their use. This would be well placed in some kind of anthropology study. But yeah next time, I’d recommend somber, terrifying music, like ‘Running to the Rain’ or something else that wouldn’t attract a copyright strike.
At 2:45 the shock wave temporarily erases the clouds via compressive heating, then the rarefaction behind it makes the cloud chamber effect.

Best weapons are those that are never used as they say....well ofc in case of nuclear weapons that it is not entirely true, but they are true as far as Cold War is considered. Thanks to them Cold War stayed cold.

@@TheHadi545 The Cold War _itself_ didn't take millions of lives, but proxy wars of that era, such as Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan _et al_ were the cause of massive casualties. Even back in the early 60's, there were safeguards that prevented the accidental and/or uninformed launch of nuclear ICBM's/SLBM's.

The explosion at 3:00 was of a device in a tower. When it detonates you can actually see the fireball racing down the tower support towers towards the ground. Almost looks like the fireball is sprouting legs

Interesting affect. Those were from xrays that proceeded the blast and traveled through the hold down guy wires on the tower that held the bomb.

Pretty simple answer here: When I put this together I hadn't yet identified most of the tests in the second half.
Some info I've since figured out : The shot around 2:55 is likely Operation Greenhouse Shot Item, 45.5 kt and the first boosted fusion weapon. The fireball at 3:00 is probably Operation Greenhouse Shot Easy, 47 kt. The awesome shot at 3:20 is almost certainly Operation Greenhouse Shot Dog, 81 kt.

What are the multiple columnar smoke trails - sometimes vertical-ish, sometimes angled, off to the sides, that can be seen to accompany some of the nuclear explosions?
I noticed that the video started with all the names and stats of the bombs. But by the end there were no more names left... just explosions. It struck me that if all the bombs explode, no one will be left to name anything anymore. The world will keep turning, but nothing will have a name.

Okay... well... I love the stuff ! I used it for my Navy destroyer's forward engine room's gas turbine electric engine's rubber boot, when we had the wrong size boot.
I was a GSM supervisor and got a medal for that repair, because I saved the captain 12 days of traveling back to Norfolk to get the correct part and it cured for me in 2 days... so it just works great for me.

I disagree, those were built as weapons yes, but what is actually happening is a true triumph of human knowledge.. Thats the sort of understanding of how the universe works that we can realize with a pen and paper.. Its truly one of, if not the most incredible thing we as a species have ever done.
Like every single thing in the universe, its just another tool of understanding, if we choose to use such tools to harm each other, is a completely different side of the conversation. But honestly, this tool might have been used to kill less people then most any other created which in itself is another amazing triumph.
Nuclear reactions are down right incredible and the only way we can even get a grasp of it is to release it in all its glory as shown.. And just watch..
