5.31.24. @ 11:40 before the Rocker Arm bolts are loosened, turn the crankshaft so the intake & exhaust valves are @ TDC on each cylinder’s compression stroke. That way the camshaft is not actuating the valves, thus no tension on the aluminum threads when the Rocker Arm bolts are loosened, to pull the pushrods so the lower intake gaskets can be removed. Also upon reassembly do the same thing, so the aluminum threads don’t get stripped out⚠️ There is another method, and it involves purchasing a tool from Lisle #48300 rocker arm lifting tool, that way you don’t have to loosen any rocker arm bolts at all‼️ RUclips is replete with videos on stripped out threads in the 3100/3400 engines. If you do strip out a thread, the best way to repair them is with Time-Certs Different year engines use different size threads, it will be either 8 mm or 10 mm thread pitch.
Leave exhaust manifolds on with u shaped exhaust still attached. Remove head bolts from both heads and get a buddy to help you lift both heads at same time, then disassemble u pipe and exhaust manifolds on workbench while watching TV. That's the way I do it👍
I have done it a couple times on my wives 05 Nox. If you support the engine and remove the front motor mount you get clear access to the dip stick which is used for measuring and filling the transmission fluid. Make sure you measure how much you take out to you can replace it with the same amount because checking the level on this can be tricky.
There’s a 10mm bolt on the left side of the intake plenum that I can not get to, looking like I need to take the water pump off to get room for the wrench to turn.

To be honest, I don't want to mess with it ether. I got lucky with this one, it could have been a real can of worms. If it had not been a friend's car I wouldn't have touched it.
attempting to do this job at home now, has the car lasted long term after doing the repair? i'm contemplating driving mine into the ground once i fix the head gasket and replace everything that needs some TLC but i'm more curious if its worth keeping after repairing
it lasted for a number of years but failed again. if the head gasket is the only thing wrong it's worth fixing, but these have dropped in value so much they are almost not worth the effort to keep going.
Hi how do you know that there was a bad head gasket? Is there any kind of test that you can perform to make sure it's a bad head gasket before going through all of this surgery to your car?
we did all the normal stuff like replacing the thermostat and carefully bleeding the system first. but no matter what we did it would keep getting a large air pocket in the system and overheating
@@SRMWorkshop I'm getting the same problem every time I bleed it it'll be okay for a day or two but then it gets right back to cold air and overheating. Thank you for responding so quickly thanks for taking the time and uploading this video it was very informative
I have a question about the heater core hose connection. My heater core was bypassed before i got the car, and i am replacing the hose because the y fiiting is cracked. There are 2 prongs on the firewall that i can connect the hose to. A top and a bottom one. If i connect it to the wrong one, it will blow the engine. Do you know which prong it hooks too?
The heater core is a loop just like the radiator, both pipes need to be hooked up. The flow direction doesn't really matter, they just need to be hooked up.
I have more of a question I have an 08 Chevrolet equinox 3.4 basically doing the same thing as you are but my mechanic put the heads on backwards the front head to the rear of the rear head to the front is this a problem and why
I left them in until the very end and then changed them with the engine all back together. Mostly did that so nothing would fall into the engine through the open holes while reassembling.
At the very least they need to be cleaned up the where there is no trace of the old gasket and checked for warpage. Anything past 0.004" and they need to be checked further and maybe resurfaced.
I don't remember it having a lash adjustment, all that is done by the lifters. Just make sure you don't swap the push rods around as they are different length.
My 2005 equinox has been sitting in my driveway for 2 years because i have to replace the head gasket and know nothing about cars. My dad took it apart and thats how its stayed since. Should i just junk it and start fresh?
It really depends on how good the rest of the car is. If it's in great shape I'd say fix it, but if anything else is wrong or the engine will need additional work then it may be time to let it go. Their values have dropped enough that they are just not worth dumping a bunch of money into. I had this same conversation with the owner of this one just a couple weeks ago.
@@SRMWorkshop Thank you! It was a cash car i got 4 years ago. It ran great for a year. If thats the only issue it otherwise was working great. But it may just be time.
@@supersoberguy1 my Jag is in the same boat, value is low and mileage is high so while it runs fine it's just not worth sinking a bunch into it. So I'm going to move on to something else and let my kids drive it till it dies.
Normally a head gasket will not go out, though some engines are more prone to failure. They tend to fail for a couple reasons, an overheat, corrosion from not having proper coolant or from the bolts stretching over time. This one had a lot of corrosion and also overheated.
About to get a 2005 Equinox 3.4 that has overheated, my question is not how to fix it, I'm a partially retired wrench monkey, I know how, but WHAT is causing these to blow gaskets and what is the fix? Any TSBs on this? I read about the gaskets blowing a second, third time, is this poor workmanship, or is there a problem that needs to be corrected for it to stay? I have a Mahle gasket kit with new bolts, and I will machine and resurface the heads myself, valve seats and faces an all, why not since I have it off. Prob will replace the water pump too.
I think it's a number of issues. This one all the original gaskets were crumbling away, but it also had a bad thermostat. Unlike engines from the past, they have removed so much metal that a single good overheat causes things to warp or start leaking. At least it's not that stupid Rover v6 that you look at funny and the gasket blows. If you really want my answer, I would just steer clear of these unless it's nearly free.
@@SRMWorkshop I found out the intake gasket design is prone to coolant leaks, fel-pro makes a re-designed gasket to fix this issue. The one I did was had previous work done on the heads, they did not use the updated gaskets so it leaked, overheated again. Other then that the AWD drive version takes GM versatrac fluid and its a bit pricey, there is no real substitute. Properly maintained these are fantastic vehicles.
@@vernonbosshard9317 I use Fel-pro a lot and have been very happy with their upgraded designs. The only problem I run into now is they don't make many of the gaskets I need for my odd-ball cars.

Doing a 2005 Equinox also, just started actually, and having a problem getting the fuel line removal tool to work because of the little bracket that is welded on right under the quick disconnect. Any suggestions?
I remember it being a pain, not sure how I did it. I may have taken half my tool to get the parts it could and then used a thin pick for the rest. Bad design for sure GM, good luck working around it.
@@SRMWorkshop Actually I did end up getting the quick disconnect removed using the tool, it just took me a few separate attempts to do so. I was getting so frustrated with it after about a half hour, so I took a break from it for a while and then came back once I calmed down, and tried it again and it came right off!
@@SRMWorkshop The next problem I'm dealing with is the heads of the bolts on the exhaust flange down pipe are rusted badly so I can't use a socket on them.
