- Final video, engine assembly of my friend's Equinox. All the prep is done, putting it all back together. I did slow down to show the head torque sequence.
I am not a mechanic. If you choose to attempt these repairs set much time aside and contact a professional if you run into issues. Always follow safe shop practices.
Excellent tutorial. Something that was not noted in the video that is crucial to success is that the push rods are slightly different lengths and easy for the DIYer to overlook during reassembly. The Intake push rod measures 5.75", the exhaust push rod measures 6.0" inches. The 1/4 inch difference will result in a bent intake valve if they are accidentally swapped.
that's a good catch, I just made sure each one went back in the exact spot it came out of.
Let everyone know, this job was done about a year ago and the Equinox is still running strong and no leaks...Tattoo did a great job on this one.

TattooPyramidHead Please help...I did everything by watching the video..all went well but I am still getting overheated... putting new gasket change them all... can you tell me what could be the next step/problem, I was reading that I need to drop something into the radiator to stop leaks or change the cap...Thank u
We started this project with an overheating issue. verified the electric fans were working, changed out the thermostat, and made sure there was no external leaks. After doing that we burped the system a couple times, but the air kept returning and that is the reason the head gasket needed to be changed.
I would caution against using any kind of stop leak as they normally just plug up radiators and other things you don't want to clog.

I just completed this task on a 2008 equinox. Your set of three videos I think are the best ones for this work. I had never been that deep into a modern engine, so took a lot of photos and marked parts with tape and magic marker to get them reinstalled in right place and right order. One comment I have would be to loosen and remove the coolant tube in the lower intake manifold, driver side, before pulling the intake off. I tried to wiggle intake and pull forward like you did. The pipe came out, but the mounting bracket got bent a lot in process, and had to be straightened out during reassembly.

Dear TPH,
One trick that helps alot is to number the bolts and their bolt holes as you take the bolts out. So when you have your hardware set out, bolts can be easily matched to the holes if you have a problem.
I completed this job over the weekend and this video helped immensely. It took about 15 hours total but I made the mistake of trying to drop the oil pan because the oil was very thick but the pan can't be dropped because the frame is in the way (lesson learned). My 2005 runs like a 2006 now haha

Thank you for taking the time to make this video series. I've done a head gasket on a 94 Saturn, but this thing looks a bit more intimidating. I've watched it twice now with my 14 y/o son who is going to be getting his hands dirty on this one. We've just gotten started and going slowly. I am stumped right now on getting the metal coolant pipe off that covers the back bolts to the upper intake. Your vid quality in part 1 on that section wasn't able to show that. We'll figure it out though. Either way, expect several more views before we are done.
It just pops out once you get the retaining bolt off.
This 3 part video was excellent. Just finished mine tonight. I only did the front. You can crack the tappet cover on the back to get your intake off. No alternator removal required.
Great videos. I like to have the heads pressure tested for small cracks- the shop also cleans up the valves and installs new valve stem oil seals. I think that it is good value when the heads are off.
For sure a good idea when you have no clear indication of where the leak is. In this case it was very clear the gaskets were just destroyed, and the heads looked great
Now I understand why my mechanic guy wants to charge me a ton of money for my own car head gaskets replacement...truly is a pain in the ass job. There's no way I can do this sort of thing on my backyard. I got no tools, lack the skills, the patience and besides, I suffer from panic attacks!! I pretty much will set the damn car on fire if one stupid bolt ever gets, stubbornly stuck. My psychiatrist forbids me to get that much stress.Thanks for this eye opener video!!😂😂😂
I have been fiddling with cars for over 20 years now, and many projects were done rolling around in the dirt. If you do want to work on your own cars, start with the little things like oil changes and brakes. It requires minimal tools most of the time, and it's one less thing to pay a shop for.

Should use acetone to wipe down the engine surface and also the head to remove any residual oil
THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST PUSH RODS ARE A DIFFERENT LENGTH SO IT IS IMPARATIVE THAT YOU PUT BACK IN THEI R ORIGINAL LOCATION OR AT LEAST VERIFY THAT THE LENGTH IS CORRECT .
Have to tear down my wife’s 09 next week I do the same with the torque specs on the head bolts ….half, half and 90
I have an 2005 Equinox. got told today that my coolant leak/overheat is likely the upper and lower intake manifold gasket. I think the mechanic said intake cylinder gasket. Here in 2020, assuming he doesn't have to go down to the head gasket, what should be the cost of this job with labor and parts?
How important is it for me to ask for metal core replacement gaskets versus the plastic ones being replaced? thanks if ur still out there. from st louis area
if it's just the intake I imagine it would be 2 or 3 hours of labor (at whatever the shop rate is) and maybe $100 for gaskets and fluids. But I could be way off there as most shops quote based on book time. As for the gaskets, I remember his were just really crusty and brittle from age. I always try to get gaskets from reputable manufacturers or go full OEM. Hope that answers your questions.

Hello Tattoo, I have been watching your videos while working on my equinox. While scraping the old head gasket off, my blade slipped and fell into one of the water water ports. I tried fishing it out with a magnet but no luck. Where can it be and what should be my next move?
Great video. I wish I had found this series before I took my Equinox apart! What grit is your honing block and where did you get it? Also a friend gave me a parts washer, if i decide to clean the heads in it, is there a cleaner i can use that would not damage the valve stem seals? I had the same problem with broken exhaust manifold studs for the rear head. Luckily they both came out. Thanks for taking the time to post the series.
The stem seals should be fine to wash, most things that tolerate being covered in oil put up with cleaners very good. I used the same wet/dry stone for the block and heads, the course side seemed to cut the nasty stuff off well and leave a nice finish.
What is the torque of the screwdriver?
Went to check the oil level as these burn oil and found that tell tell sign of water mixing with oil. Only thing is that it not over heating. So would it have to over heat for it to truly be a head gasket or it just hasn’t got there yet
They can fail in different ways. Somewhere it sounds like your engine has a blown gasket. It could be something like the timing cover, or something deeper. It is very hard on an engine to get driven like that, best to get it looked at sooner than later.

Putting the head bolts back on where do the long ones go and the short ones... Only noticed on my 09 equinox on the rear head it was 3 short and one long on the back and 3 long and one short on top.
If I remember correct they should all stick out the same amount when just dropped in the holes before you start threading them in (around 1/2"). That should tell you if one is in the wrong spot.

I was wondering what torque you used for the rocker arms? Mine is clicking and running a bit rough but kicks over great.
I honestly don't remember, at the time I just looked it up online.
Perhaps you can answer some of my questions. I am wondering if 1) it's necessary to remove all the spark plugs and 2) did you have to set/mess-around-with Top Dead Center to do this job?
no and no. I changed the plugs because the rear ones are hard to reach with the engine fully assembled and I wanted it to run great for my friend over the long haul. if they are in good shape no need to change them. For top dead center, as long as you don't mess with the timing set (no need on this engine) the 2 sensors will figure out the position for you.
I figured the second pass on head bolts was 70 ft/lbs because soon as you got to the outside the inners had loosed up.
That sounds about right. I normally 1/2 the first torque spec for a snugging pass.
I did 65 as that was what they came off at. Fyi the rocker bolts wont take 45 without stripping. I had to helicoil one. 40 to 42 was what they could take.

i just wanna ask where did u buy the studs and bolts for exhaust manifold coz mine broke off...
I picked them up at a local place, Tacoma Screw (you can order from them). However the one I got from them needed the threads extended, and you need a good Die to cut the threads. you could get around that by adding some washers, but I would rather have the stud be correct.

What's the best method to get the belt back on without unbolting the engine mount and jacking the engine up? I'm just about finished going through this process but need to get the belt back on.
If i remember correctly, you can feed it over the difficult pulleys under the mount first, then work your way up.
@@SRMWorkshop I ended up feeding around all but the top idler pulley, and then tied a nylon rope around the tensioner pulley assembly, then tied other end to a shovel handle. Then I was able to put the shovel tip in the ground in front of the car and push it out with one hand which loosened the tension pulley enough for me to pull the belt over the last pulley without tearing the engine mount apart. My head gasket replacement and upper engine rebuild went well and the car is running well.
I know you put the push rods off to the side in order that you took em out but if you didn’t do that is there anyway you can tell which ones go where
odds are they will interchange in the different spots just fine, I keep them in order and in the same direction so they will match back up with the existing wear in the engine.

Did you reuse the same rocker arm bolts ?
DId you use any anti seize, oil or lube on the Head Bolt threads, or you put them in dry?
I put them in clean and dry. unless your bolts require lube, don't use it as you may over tighten the bolts.

Thought it was 25 ft lbs on rockers? 18 on intake bolts?
It might be, I don't do this kind of work often so I look it up. Also some gasket companies will issue revised torque specs to work with their products.

After completing the head gasket replacement, I have valve chatter/ tapping coming from the rear valve cover. Any insight as to what may be the cause ? Thanks for the video, helped a TON.

Yes, put the push rods in the wrong hole and they will bend. Earlier in theses conversations it states one push rod will be 5 3/4 inch and the other is 6 inches. I suggest you read all comments they are very educational
does the RTV gasket go at the ends of the valley at the ends of the s curved rubber gasket

I find it's easier if you do, less chance of cross contaminating stuff.
If it blew hard you prob wont since it all boiled off.

I would have to look it up, I just did a search for the sequence. The correct one for the head should be a 3 step sequence, 2 torque steps and then like 90 deg. The rockers are a single torque number.
Thank but I have a doubt in the 13:40 min of tour video you show 2 steps for the rockers, in the case of the head whats is the torque for the 1 step and what for the 2 step ?
I think I added an extra step for the rockers, put them to about half the final torque to make sure everything was seated nicely before final torque.

What is the orange silicone down in the valley at 12:22?
Those came as part of the intake gasket kit, have no idea why they were orange. If you get the heads resurfaced it's best to ditch that gasket and run a fat bead of silicone instead, as the gasket will be too thick for the change in head height.

Don't think that's the same set, but it looks like a pretty good one. You do need to pick up a set of head bolts cause they are one use only. We bought all of our stuff online as well.

what's the problem when you start it up how did u correct it?
It was a mistake I made in the firing order, I thought #1 cylinder was on the other side of the engine and did all the wires wrong. Just had to unplug them all and put them on the correct coil terminals.

Just take your time, most of the stuff will only go together one way so not too hard to figure out.

We found it on ebay, company out of Florida sold it. It was about half the price of a local auto parts store.

no adjustment on this engine, the lifters control the lash.
