We chose Iloilo as our retirement home. I agree that what really set it apart from the other top contenders was how pedestrian and bike friendly it is, as well with how clean it is.

The recent recognition of culinary achievements and a smoke-free environment seem to reinforce that broader institutional awareness of the efforts here. IMHO, the rapid growth and rise in prices/demand must be followed by associated improvements in support and services, but these are typical growing pains of a city on the rise. @@HappyinJapan358 when we decided on the Philippines my wife made it clear small town/province life was not for her and Manila, Cebu, Davao were just too big for us. I did not want to be in an expat dominated town (Dumaguete, Subic, Angeles). So we started looking at the 2nd tier cities. Started with crime stats, natural disasters, transportation, medical options..... We narrowed the list pretty quickly to Tagum, Bacolod, Iloio, Puerto Princesa and CDO. After traveling to them the clear choice for us was Iloilo. We found Bacolod and CDO dirty, Puerto Princessa a bit too remote. We liked Tagum but the military check points around Mindanao kind of scared me off. We enjoy walking, biking and pickle ball and Iloilo is by far the best city we have seen for the first two and a growing population of pickle ball courts to play on. As far as the location in Iloilo, we travel a lot so we did not want a house to have to take care of so we opted for a condo. One of the main items we wanted in a condo was a two-bed, two bath and we did not want to be in mega world(this limited our search by a lot). Mega World is nice but we did not want to go downstairs to a Starbucks and McDonalds. We were looking for a more local feeling. We ended up at a condo a mile or so away from Megaworld called WV Towers. It hit all the boxes on our checklist. The biggest concern we have is that they have just completed tower 2(ours) of 8 so there will be ongoing construction for some time, but so far the sounds of construction just blend in with the dogs and roosters.

Wowowee! The new red brick sidewalks of this new esplanade at Sunset Boulevard are twice wider than the already wide sidewalks of the beautiful Diversion Road. And Goodness! I've never before seen sidewalks anywhere in the Philippines that are as wide as these!

That's about 5 km for the main section from IBP to Pakiad Road in Oton. Another 2 km for the extension will connect it to the Radial Road 1(R1) Bypass, which is also under construction now.

I have mixed feelings that word will continue to spread even more rapidly and resulting growth will spur an uncontrollable increase in traffic and local prices... Part of the equation is still unknown as the ultimate destination will also need to consider my young Filipina daughter's choice of university and employment destination. This is the case since the home will ultimately be hers in the long run. Everything is in flux at the moment but if I had to make a choice today, I think it would be either Iloilo or Bacolod.
