I remember when you could go buy a new basic bare bones work truck from a dealership for 15k. The fact that trucks went into the luxury market and then became the focus is absurd. The used market for 20 year old trucks has skyrocketed because people need a truck to get things done but can't afford these new ones. It isn't just Chevy either but all the manufacturers.

trucks also. And you can work on them yourself. I wouldn't
even know where to begin working on one of these new trucks...

There are many high net worth people out there buying vehicles for cash...Just because you are a low wage earner and have no liquidity and drive a 1989 truck doesn't mean these trucks aren't moving...there are millions of high wage professional people and business owners who do have the $ ...my dad used to buy all his vehicles cash ....and purchased several six figure vehicles for cash ,,,and he taught me to do the same....if you don't have the money to buy just earn more and save more ..or just buy what u can afford...don't waste ur time coming on here saying "evil dealers...greedy...no one can afford these prices..." y'all just sound bitter and jealous...

However they can't just come in and shut them down because dealerships are franchisees so that makes it tricky.
Only a fool would spend that much money for something to get around in. I'll stick to my 97' GMC dually. It's paid for, easy to work on, extremely cheap to work on for a diesel and it's reliable as long as it's taken care of.

So yeah you can't just get rid of them, but then if you did you would end up like tesla who will raise and lower prices whenever they so choose and completely rip off their customers. So, thanks for this, bud. GEEEEEEZ! $100K for a Chevy truck?? I had no idea it's gotten that insane over there. Unbelievable. As a comparison, here in the Philippines, you can buy a fully-loaded, brand new, 4x4 extended cab TOYOTA HI-LUX for under $36K! Did I mention it's a Hi-Lux? The world's best pick-up truck? (Americans might disagree with that--- but the rest of the world arrived at that conclusion decades ago.) At the lower end of the spectrum are the Ford Rangers' WildTrak and "Raptor" (not exactly a Raptor, though) which you can purchase brand new for a whopping----TADA!--- $24K. I live in Western Canada, home of the 100k vehicle not just the 100k truck. Drove by a large dealer with my girlfriend the other day and I pointed out the rows upon rows of 100k trucks. She asked me what I would pay for one I said about $35,000. She laughed and said, "that's a big difference." I responded with, "that's just how out of hand this has gotten."
I don't need an economics degree (even though I have one) to see that this is NOT sustainable.

That "USED" scheme you were talking about, I know a little about. The demand in the US was so high there for a while that you could buy a brand new truck here in Canada and drive them around for a while and then sell them back to the dealer, who would then export it to the US as a used vehicle. You would loose almost no money and get set up to buy another right away. Not many people get to take advantage of that though, as it's kind of an insider system.

And here I thought it was crazy that I was walking away from a 2016 Chevy Silverado z71 Off-Road Package at $37k pre-pandemic in Austin TX to purchase one with lower mileage and one year older for $20k in Georgetown TX. No haggle almost all the same features the big difference being the apple play interface and computer. I still have the truck it's been about 4 years and I have put 110k miles on the 2015 chevy Silverado z71 off-road package all the bells and whistles for that model in that year with bed liners and tint with side steps and 4wd. Here is the thing for me, I know many of these trucks to be made in Mexico even if many parts are imported from China. That insight for me was specific to my background in policy and business elevated by my Masters degrees and just growing up in a border state. You could never convince me to pay that much for a truck. I live in Southside Chicago now and my truck is all beat up from my work in the natural resources and energy industry specifically industrial and mining. However, the trucks I see around here are what many truck folks would consider street queens and that is what they are driven by folks in the city who want to be truck people without the need for a truck. I received many offers during the pandemic to sell my truck and I still receive offers, so there is still a demand but I won't sell with these prices and likely will keep it till the wheels fall off. Actually been looking at buying another but direct from a seller. It is a risk but with these prices if you know vehicles then you can spot the lemons and find the peach. I keep it running strong keep up with maintenance like my grandfather a (Master Mechanic and 32 year US Army Engineer Retired) taught me and it will last me a long time. It's driven across this land from the mines nestled in the Colorado Rockies to the Deserts of West Texas and all across the West and Dixie and everywhere in between through all the elements. With minor rust because I always keep up with it and lined the undercarriage in Colorado.

trucks are so profitable, but the real issue is when you buy a rocky ridge or any other upgraded trucks is they are regular trucks with aftermarket extra. when you total this $95K truck the insurance sees a work truck and your check will be less than original sticker without the add ons. so maybe after a few months it will only be worth 40k to the insurance and all the extras are lost. I had a customer get a check from his 100K truck 4 months old was just over 42K. he lost the difference.

Then GM announced the E Silverado work truck at a competitive price in the $40’s. I reserved one only to find out that price would not stick for long, even before they made a single one. I just found me a ten year old Escalade EXT (mid 20’s) instead and have been completely content. At my age I can remember when the avg cost of a home was about 125K and now that’s the cost of a truck! Go figure.

These truck prices are insane today. I am 63 years old and I bought a special order 1987 Ford F-150 XLT with every option in the book, 4WD, dual gas tanks, the best engine, and on and on. I even ordered it with special colors, metal flake silver and metal flake blue. The salesman I got it from said it was the best and highest price truck they ever sold.
I paid a total of $15,200 for it, and the extra $200 was for a 6 year unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. Yes it was $15,200, for the best truck you could get. I worked at a union printing factory with 300 employees and every guy there who had a truck was jealous of my truck.
Today no truck should ever be more than $60,000, at the most. I sure would not pay $80,000, to $100,000 for a truck, ever.

I agree with other commenters, build some base level trucks. Thing is they don't want to because they make huge profit off the extra trim models. I bought a base level truck, the next trim level up was $5-$8 K more and all it had for that money was some decals and different wheels, next trim up for another $8k was a back up camera and Navi. I put a camera and navi on for $200, don't need bigger wheels cause that's just more money when I need new tires. Like you said, when they can't sell them they will crush them and get a government bail out at our expense. The world's gone mad with greed.
