It was my Dads funeral today, this video was the only thing thats made me smile all day when i saw the thumbnail, and ive had 30mins of not thinking about it, so thank you, great video as always.
Do a proper repair job on the rusty sill. Blend the paint as best as possible into the rear quarter panel. Someone else has already suggested decals to help hide the (hopefully) subtle paint colour difference. Be honest when selling it. Lots of pics of the work carried out showing rust removed, and area rebuilt. Won't get top price for it, but if done well it should still be worth a good amount.
I agree on this. Aim for the best blend as achievable. Cat D unfortunately and doesn't warrant the full respray. If it looks a bit off you can live with it. At least the sills will be rock solid
Make a detailed video of the quality repairs you always do. It will be peace of mind to the buyer and hopefully sell easier. When is the next video of it.
I'd replace the sill and just paint the repair and blend in as best you can with a good mop and polish 👌let the next owner decide if they want a full respray or not. Hard work of the rust repair is done 👍
You should always wear a mask 😷 and my advice is spray white vinegar with water mix 80-30 mix all over the car and on the carpets and then on the carpet and headliner with mould killer and to wet-vac the carpets after.
I’d say the same, as a painter, blowing it in up to the rub strip would be a good enough job. That and the wing, and call it a day. It’s cat D, it’s not an investment car (well not as much), someone will buy it to drive and they likely won’t be as fussy as the man looking for the low mileage high dollar car.
We ran one of these for about 12 years. Was a terrific car. What did we do.....normal maintenance, also dsg and haldex service....couple of batteries, ( in boot, under a hatch, bit of a pain to get to) Suspension bits, couple of window regulators. That was about it. Very reliable engine. So much so, i bought an r36 for myself ( golf was the wifes car) and i still have it, after a good ten years. Great sounds.
First time watching the channel, just up to the oil change and thought ‘you’ve bought 6l of oil and are emptying into a 5l container’… the mess and honesty deserves a subscribe, I’m in. 👍👍👍
I was super impressed with all the work done. You are one good guy and a good mechanic... that last bit was a bummer. That is totally fixable. I say fix it and keep it.
It's worth fixing, I'm an R32 fan had a MK4 R32 wish I still had mine 😢. Just love the VR6 engine not a fan of the four banger popcorn 🍿 fart maker's! Cheers 🍻 🇺🇸
Fix the rusted sil. Paint match as best you can the bit you've repaired. Then place a funky decal or wide vynal wrap down the sil and doors both sides to cover the repair and give it a sporty look. David from OZ
That was going so well too! Can't wait to see what you decide to do with it - Another brilliant and informative video. Great skills and you have a brilliant workshop too - Looking forward to your next video.
I think everyone would like to see it fixed properly, but just blend the paint the best you can to keep the cost down, so when you sell it at least the new owner has a solid bass to work on, good luck, great video content, 👍👏👏👏👍
Brilliant video, just what we want, in depth from the very start. Personally id put the running gear in a mk1 or a caddy, sell whats left of the golf and stick a bit of money in the back pocket. We all get bit every now and again, never nice, but turn it in to something positive. R32 Caddy and sell it to DCG
Absolutely gutted for you when that rust showed up. I love the amount of care you give to these old cars and really wanted to see it gleaming at the end, massive shame.
Great video, great work, such a shame about the rust, such a brilliant golf to drive,i would do the rust and keep it for a daily, its a future classic 👍👌😀
I had a Mk4 R32 and expected to see rusty Cills as mine were rotten. Luckily I replaced them and the skirts covered the repair…definitely worth doing the Cills and try to match any paint needed…but a full re-spray will eat the profit 😩
The R32 is the car that i always wanted and never had. The value will most defintelt increase, and i m sure decent examples wikk go for north of 10 grand in a year if 2. The VR6 has so much character, i doubt we.will ever see something of its ilk again. I would love to see you do a full restoration, fix the rusty sills, ice blast and rust proof the underside and give it a full respray. Youd be over budget, but youd have a nice R32 that in a couple of years would give you your money back. Wrapping is a thing for heavily modified cars, but in my opinion a respray in the same blue would be the best bet for this classic.
The wire brushing on the caliper had my bum hole puckering 😱 what a horrible noise! I really like the mk4 R32's, would of liked to have owned one, not so sure now.
Love the show, my opinion dnt waste time fixing the rust, there are to many mk5 r32's in the world. There is no need to restore it. Here's a plan. Which I am sure most would agree😅. Get yourself a clean vw mk2 shell, yup here we go😂. Full transfer of everything from the mk5 to the mk2. Man, now we talking. Full 4 wheel drive, Dsg, The works. That would be something to watch now.🤤
I’d definitely repair it and get it smart repaired it’s definitely worth it after all the work you put into it. Still got a lot of profit in it if done right.
I feel your pain, i also flip cheap cars and the latest one (broken cambelt, head off and new valves job) was booked in for MOT and i thought i would clean up the sills and put some fresh Shutz body coating on, well my hand went straight through the sill, it was quite well disguised by the original thick rubbery factory coating, both the sills are rotted about 60cm long in the same place as yours, not impressed, cancelled the MOT and retired to the house for a brew and a sulk. Lesson of the day, get right under the car and have a damn good look at the underside and not just a quick glance.
When you fix the rust you could paint the rocker covers black and if you can cut and weld close enough to where the cover sits you could paint it black as well just above and around the cover area in the same design the cover is so it looks like it blends in with the cover. Sort of hard to describe it. 😅
Repair the rust and only paint the repaired area as good as possible. Maybe it is not 100 % perfect but 95 %. It is a really great car the V6 R32 engine, worth to have fun with it a long time. Great looking car with the best R32 color! Make it shining!
And I thought Italian cars were just the worst for rust and random wear issues. I'm actually surprised this came through that amount of neglect and still was a car. Thanks for demonstrating that buying a car, as a punt, on doing a bit of a flip and building your funds into going higher, is really a risky gamble at time. And when it starts to go wrong, how to ethically try and handle it. Respect for not hiding its faults and making someone else's life a nightmare. I like surprises, but only the good ones...
What a bummer, ive been there, it stings. I would strip it and sell all the good bits, try to make the most of your money back. You could attempt to sell it as is and cut your losses. Like your vids, entertaining and good to watch. Take care.
Great content as always, thats a given. After all the wk put in I would repair the sill, tart the paint wk up and sell it. With the engine strong and the bodywork solid I'd stick to your guns pick a price and stick to it. Every other 06 plate will be in the same state or worse and run into the ground or worse, eg poss gearbox shagged etc. Best of luck.👏👏👏👍
Great film 👌 Yeas I just waited too se what you wold find under there! 😅 I bought a MK5 GTI 2006 and yes I did the same mistake, did not take my hand under their😩 1 month of rust work! Now I bought me a MK5 R32 2007 , this time I did tjek it and did find rust in the left side, the prise dropped on the care 👌 Pleas fix the care, these cars are icons 👌👌 they will goo up and be a god investment 👍 Thanks for a great show Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Was looking forward to new content and wasn’t disappointed! You don’t see many 3 doors around now. In my opinion, repair the rust and maybe wrap the car or blend as best possible to trim line. Should find a home once finished.
One thing regarding interior smells/odours. Had an issue where I couldn’t get a smell out of car. Tried everything including using a vapour machine and the only thing that worked and has kept the smell away is Autoglym Odour Eliminator. I swear by it now. It’s got something in it that reactivates the pleasant smell of the eliminator even when things get warm inside the car. Not expensive either.
If nothing else wrong (engine/gear box OK) repair sill and do minimal paint job. Paint doesn't need to be perfect... I like the black sill idea below! Nice vid ta.
Love the flip videos, but ouch, that rust hurt! Was going to suggest 2 tone paint scheme like previous comments. Would look smart for less cost. In too deep to stop now, hopefully still a few quid in it. Thanks for the great content 👌👍🏻
What I would do is paint it with some stone chip under the sill once replaced then rattle can try and blend or even better if you have your own spraygun and stick a livery on the rear quarters if you can’t get a great finish
You’ve got to weld in the sill repair panels. Alternative solution for paint cost would be Two Tone the paint finish. Grey on the bottom and leave the top half blue. It’s an idea anyway.
12:12 lolol 13:10 oh dear, nothing worse than trying to be ultra careful and then making a complete mess. 24:10 Ratatouille's house!! Green mould is a nightmare I'm amazed you didn't wear a mask. It was all going so well until 31:36. Defo use it as a track car and have some fun. Great content.
Was rather sad seeing an .:R32 left sat there in this condition but I’m glad you took it in to hopefully getting it singing on the road again! The VR6 deserves to roar once again!
How have I only just found your channel! Love it. I'd go new metal, paint the bare minimum and some vinyl graphics is a great shout. Mechanically sorted, solid and presentable it'll be a great car to enjoy and have fun in
Get rid of the rust and do a respray with three light coats of Killrust or something similar that is not automotove paint and then three coast of automotve clear and then sell it
I’d repair the sills both sides (assuming its the same the other side)😢 then probably wrap it a Matt colour, maybe the same blue. Much cheaper than paint and wont stand out too badly on inner parts of the doors etc? Great video as always! Love the content and keep up these flipping videos! My dream to do what you do in my own garage so you’re inspiring me!
6 months ago I got an A3 8P 2.0tfsi Quattro. For 5.5k since then I’ve spent 2k on brake discs pads full engine service, all filters changed. I Just need another 4/500£ for gear box and haldex service from Audi. Ready for a tune
The other side may be the same. I'd repair both sides and paint/blend below the side protectors. One of my wifes cars is a mk5 GTI, I hope it doesn't have the same issue.
My first time watching your channel. I appreciate the honesty and no nonsense presenting style. That rotten sill was a bit of a sucker punch. Up until that point I was thinking it was a good car in need of a good clean and some basic mechanicals sorted. I would fix it mechanically but not do the paint. There will be a buyer out there who will want it and they can decide to restore it to factory or turn it into a track / modded car knowing it is mechanically sound. They can commit to how much they want to spend on it and you get onto another project.
The way it sounds and drives, I'll bet it's worth keeping. Slightly different colours on the rear won't worry you all that much - fixing it would be the way to go!
Another brilliant video Paul. Such a shame about the rust, being in that headge hasn't helped! In my opinion you should weld it, treat it and spray the rear quarter and make it presentable and functional. Not everyone can afford a mint R32, and I reckon a lot of people would be interested at the right price. It's never going to be a museum piece, so whoever buys it will have a really nice R32 for £5k+! Looking forward to the next video mate. One of the most underrated channels on RUclips!!!
If it were me, I'd do the sill repairs, keep the repair area as low as possible & fit a vinyl side graphic over the blend line. Or wrap the lower half in a contrasting colour.. Or possibly a rally type livery in vinyl graphics. Vinyl has gotta be your friend in this instance.
Depending on the milage a good example is still fetching strong money. You also have gained a good name for your self for delivering high quality cars. I reckon do it to your usually high standard and it will fetch the north of what these are going for. Failing that fall back onto a raffle or see if dream cars will have it off you. I'd certainly get a couple of tickets if there at a good price. It's an appreciating classic. 🤟
Great video, I have owned multiple R32's over the years. You should most definately restore this example, even with it being a CAT D, if you put some effort into this, you will see a return.
It's still worth saving, some welding it's a vag car they all rust, what about a wrap and it would be nice to have seen how you serviced the dsg and other work done like instead of just saying that's all that done or fixed , love the channel ❤
That made me laugh. As a r32 owner and DIY mechanic I could relate to the oil spill. I once dropped the slump plug into the oil and panicked, forgot it the hot and put my hand in it. Luckily wearing gloves which saved me.
Great video If possible , fix the rust part and just paint black strip on the bottom for the both side, 🤔 So you don’t have to worry about blending the paint.
Do a proper job. Like you always do mate..... Got me waiting to see the finished R32. I've always wanted one like the one you've got..... Keep up the brilliant work and cannot wait to see the end result 👍👍👍👍
Tip top content , looks like you’ll be getting the welder out then yourself.😬 if able to save cut below the body kit line so it’s not seen when kit fitted back on . Keep em coming 🏴
A 3 door R32 will be a future classic for sure! We all know someone who says “I once had one of those, I should never have sold it” You have come this far, get the sill sorted and a nice paid job and keep it for a while. It’s always nice to see a project through! What would Matt Armstrong 🤔 Great to see more content from Odd Autos 👍
Just came across the channel and I love it already!! The fact you post a video with actual progress instead of just an over edited video of you buying the car and doing 1 bit per week is very good it’s much better than most other peoples content form hate 20 minute videos with no progress myself. My mate lives on a farm and leaves full bird feeder in boot for this exact reason so if mice get in they don’t eat anything else! Lovely car, great job. Repair sills and just paint the car yourself, wrap it or half and half it. Graphics would work too, make it a race car livery😜
Nice garage matt only thing i think is expensive is the YFOOD bought a box online well expensive found the same type of food drink in morrisons half the price
My mark 4 golf cill was toast I managed just to blend it up the quarter didn’t need to go to,the door . Was magic black but that’s what I would try to do
I would repair the body and use two tone color, not painting but wrapping the lower side with a lighter color. I think you can end up with a much cooler paint job. I really hope you will have profit and carry on with your videos. Nice work on this one too 👍
Do the mechanical repairs yourself, get the repairs into primer and do the best you can with spray cans to paint it. I’m sure it’ll still be worth at least £4k even with the not perfect paint.
Another great video Paul 👍 shame about the corrosion 😢 seen same thing with Focus ST's hiding rusted out sills. Worth repairing and selling on as a paint work project if you want out of car cheaply 🤷
Steering wheel a few hundred, shift boot a chunk. Any r32 specific trim they had a different Siler trim then other mk5 worth some money. If you pick it right. If you had to break it for 500. You're in the GREEN
Just getting to the interior portion... r32 leathers worth some money. Whether you keep or break down its a win. But with what you have into it at this point RUN IT
And after seeing the rust... grind off rust, use por15 with fiber mesh to seal it back up doesn't have yo be perfect and out side skirt back in lol, while you're under there rid any surface rust and Just por15 the whole sill
You're exactly the sort of guy everyone want to work on their car. No half measures, everything done to a high standards. Whixh unfortunately means you'll have to do the full sill replacements here!
It was my Dads funeral today, this video was the only thing thats made me smile all day when i saw the thumbnail, and ive had 30mins of not thinking about it, so thank you, great video as always.
Aww no way!. Hope you got someone with you to keep you company mate, that’s a rough time 😢.
Condolences to you and your family, it was my Moms funeral on Tuesday as well😢….remember the good times.
@@jasonshaw4957 Bless you, yes all we can do is remember the good time Hope you ok. X
Stay strong brother, they’re always watching

Do a proper repair job on the rusty sill. Blend the paint as best as possible into the rear quarter panel. Lots of pics of the work carried out showing rust removed, and area rebuilt. Won't get top price for it, but if done well it should still be worth a good amount.
Yer I think it’s worth a go 👍👍

When is the next video of it.
Instead of painting it to match the rest of the car, just wrap it.
I'd replace the sill and just paint the repair and blend in as best you can with a good mop and polish 👌let the next owner decide if they want a full respray or not. Hard work of the rust repair is done 👍
Nice video and to think that here in the Netherlands a MK5 R32 costs at least €10,000
You should always wear a mask 😷 and my advice is spray white vinegar with water mix 80-30 mix all over the car and on the carpets and then on the carpet and headliner with mould killer and to wet-vac the carpets after.

We ran one of these for about 12 years. Was a terrific car.

@@ODDAutos brilliant as always. Shame about this hidden sill. Cage and track it.. wouldn’t spend the money fixing it.
Fix the sill and wrap the full car. Brilliant content

It's never going to be a museum piece, so whoever buys it will have a really nice R32 for £5k+!
Looking forward to the next video mate. One of the most underrated channels on RUclips!!!
Timing chains I suspect, get early and save engine
If it were me, I'd do the sill repairs, keep the repair area as low as possible & fit a vinyl side graphic over the blend line. Or wrap the lower half in a contrasting colour..
Or possibly a rally type livery in vinyl graphics.
Vinyl has gotta be your friend in this instance.
Definitely worth getting it back up to 100% ..these are earning good £ and you've come this far already!
It’ll be chain rattle check the chain tension length using vcds.
Great video, I have owned multiple R32's over the years. You should most definately restore this example, even with it being a CAT D, if you put some effort into this, you will see a return.
Maybe weld in the new sill and diy respray the area. Its low down so even if not blended perfectly it might be ok.
It's still worth saving, some welding it's a vag car they all rust, what about a wrap and it would be nice to have seen how you serviced the dsg and other work done like instead of just saying that's all that done or fixed , love the channel ❤
A cheap wrap would do the job nicely! Such a sorry ending to a fantastic video. Nice work mate 👍🏻
spray it white under the body line across the door and wings or even a satin black fade from the repair up, no full respray needed
Loving this series keep them coming!
Oil incident cracked me up,very relatable!
That made me laugh. As a r32 owner and DIY mechanic I could relate to the oil spill. I once dropped the slump plug into the oil and panicked, forgot it the hot and put my hand in it. Luckily wearing gloves which saved me.
my dream car was a astra h vxr then i seen one of these go past me. The noise these make and amazing.
Call me racist or whatever but this guy is the only british guy i can watch his videos and enjoy lol, you got a new subscriber ODD Autos 🤣🤣
It'll be worth doing the sills and blending the paint as best you (or someone!) can - these MK5 R32's are going up in value. Well done.
Great video
If possible , fix the rust part and just paint black strip on the bottom for the both side, 🤔
So you don’t have to worry about blending the paint.
My heart goes out to you after finding that rot in the sills, especially after the money already spent.
A 3 door R32 will be a future classic for sure! We all know someone who says “I once had one of those, I should never have sold it”
You have come this far, get the sill sorted and a nice paid job and keep it for a while. It’s always nice to see a project through! What would Matt Armstrong 🤔
Great to see more content from Odd Autos 👍
Love the content! I’d repair the sills and get the sides blown in. It is what it is, just means you have to make more on the next project.
I really don’t like the Golf 5 ..
however love the VR6 ..
Maybe one day you could put this engine In a Mk2 Escort??? 😅
Nice garage matt only thing i think is expensive is the YFOOD bought a box online well expensive found the same type of food drink in morrisons half the price
I'd replace the sills and paint upto the bump strips on the rear quarter's.
Nice work on this one too 👍
The DSG box I understand to be fundamentally a pre selector box as in the fifties !
Yes same idea, they had these in 1980’s rally cars too. 👍
I think a repair could be localised behind the side skirt 👍 still on course to a profit, but would have to check otherside too.... Cracking project 😁
Bumpers worth a good chunk, side skirts worth a good chunk as well!! Same with headlights.
The grill alone is 150 to 300 in the states..
Steering wheel a few hundred, shift boot a chunk. Any r32 specific trim they had a different Siler trim then other mk5 worth some money. If you pick it right.
If you had to break it for 500. You're in the GREEN
I'd still keep it though if you can do it all yourself, which shouldn't be sn issue, parts shouldn't be bad. And it would be a fun csr to have
Just getting to the interior portion... r32 leathers worth some money.
2:12. "really bang em up the box". That's my quote of the day
I´ll second doing the rust repair properly then wrapping it. Bound to be a petrol head out there with 4000 spare for a track day beast.
That’s awesome of you guys to do that. I almost got teary eyed. I said almost!
You're exactly the sort of guy everyone want to work on their car. No half measures, everything done to a high standards. Whixh unfortunately means you'll have to do the full sill replacements here!
I think you could do the sill and blend to the lower trim line.
