This song is about Bloody Harlan, part of the Coal Wars fought between 1931-39, but mostly between 31-32. While not to the extent of Blair Mountain it was a major labour fight, with the Kentucky National Guard being called multiple times to bring scabs (non-union workers) and guarding them. The counties the coal companies controlled, like Harlan, were the worst anti-union counties in the US; where the police would beat you to death for no reason. The violence primarily ended after 1935 with the Wagner Act, in which yellow-dog contracts, company unions, blacklists, and discrimination on basis of union activity were all outlawed. The coal companies in control of Harlan County were resistant to the new laws too, the coal unwilling to give control and follow the law. On July 7 a group of deputies beat several miners for celebrating the passing of the act, and the National Guard were deployed to maintain order three times. But on September 29, troops fought on behalf of the miners for the first time. The control by the coal companies was called "the worst reign of terror in the history of the county" by Governor Ruby Laffoon, who protected the miners, despite the car bomb that had killed the Harlan County Attorney Elmon Middleton a few weeks before. The song is based on the song by the same name written by Florence Reece, one of the union organizers for the UMW in Harlan in 1931.
carlospercevallol It’s possible that the song was also sung by UK coal miners. Coal miners in the UK could have been inspired by their fellow miners across the Atlantic.

The Second American Civil War was a deeply bloody affair, just like the first one that raged in American history, but this was one claimed more lives than ever thought possible. We were all young boys who had only suffered through a few winters of life and we all thought that, with this Civil War, we would find the things we wanted most. Things like adventure, action, excitement and the chance to prove to ourselves that we were strong men like our forefathers. We thought that, even though there were three sides raging against each other, we would use our moral high ground to drive out the enemy and secure the future of the land that had raised us in its sweet nurturing embrace. Little did we realize that the other two sides thought the same thing. The Civil War raged and bloody battle after bloody battle we lost a little piece of our childhood with every step through the amber waves of grain. Now the war is over and millions of Americans who only years before were neighbors, brothers, cousins, and friends lay dead, their blood soaked deep into the soil of every inch of the country. They were cut down in the springtime of their life and now rest below side by side, regardless of the side they fought for. I had lost so much in the war and the singular hope that kept me moving forward after years of calamitous bloodshed was the thought of returning home to my ma and paw. But now, walking down the remains of main street, I realize that returning to the warm embrace of home is just another childhood dream turned to ash.

What you say carries no truth in facts. Long received MASSIVE support from the lower-classes in Lousiana. The reason he is quoted as saying "A man is not a dictator when he is given a commission from the people and carries it out" is because of his incredible support in Louisiana alone, not to mention other Southern states. He built half the highways in Louisiana and fought the large corporations which 'garnered' him massive support throughout the state from the predominantly poor and working-class people, who vastly outweighed the people who held disdain for him in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. He absolutely did shady things that few people, outside of academia, are willing to talk about. His consistent work to line his own pockets with the graft he was taking from people proved to be one of his greatest downfalls. Furthermore, there's a reason they tried to impeach him so many times, but that doesn't mean he didn't have support or "fucked over" Louisiana, infact the failure to Impeach him so many times is evidence of that. He was immensely popular, enjoyed massive public support, and died before he could be turned into a villain.

I think this song tells the tale of almost every faction in the Second American Civil War. No longer do you have the superiority of one or the other. Every side has their heroes and villains, idealists and crooks, every side thinking they are the hero of their story: 1) The Federal Government has allowed this long period of instability and poverty to remain without fixing anything or trying to find a compromise. McArthur may think himself a savior, yet to achieve this it will come at a price of millions of his fellow men and women. While the Democrats/Republicans utterly refuse to work with either the AFP or Socialists - forcing either side into becoming the tyrant that they accuse them of. 2) The AFP has the most open crooks and villains - lead by a charismatic man, whom might be considered a hero or tyrant - depending on who you ask. In my opinion, a man forced to work with the ultranationalists and fundamentalists - to achieve some sort of 'American' Dream and aid the people, without completely destroying the system that had been created. 3) The Socialists are like the AFP - albeit more tame. As they seek to fix the system by changing it completely. Since it has been evident, that the current system has failed and doesn't care about the average man - the Federal Government isn't doing anything to end the Great Depression. Depending on which way you slide - it is still a tragedy, as those most open and willing to actual political, economic and cultural change are forced to achieve it by taking up the gun, to prevent themselves from being gunned down. 4) The PSA - could be considered perhaps the only good people in the United States. Fighting against fascists, socialists and an authoritarian dictator - although a cost that will still force them to kill millions of their fellow Americans. --- Which side are you on? It don't matter, as everyone' hands are dirty and you are ultimately part of a whirlwind, that won't stop until a million are dead and those left are to realize what they had just done.
Outside Kaiserreich, this song was the song of the American workers movement. It created unions, United workers, launched strikes, and even advanced civil rights. Please people, remember this song again. It’s so important to our country.

The context and tonal differences between this cover and the original really ups the scale of the conflict in this cover. It’s much more somber and union referring to THE Union. I love it
chilling. really gives a more appropriate vibe for the civil war than the typically upbeat songs currently used. solidarity forever, every man a king, and the battle hymn of the republic are simply to happy for one of the largest nations on earth coming apart at the seams in the fires of cataclysmic fraternal war. kind of like those curtis ghost memes being posted on the subreddit.

@@Meshakhad me too, though it was seeing frostpunk that sealed the deal. Easy to see the colective bargaining power when the greatest industrial project in history gets ground to a halt by a single collective strike. Unfortunately, what those workers didn't know was that that effort wasn't a vanity project, but last ditch apocalyptic preparations that the royal family was so desperate to complete they put the crown jewels and other national treasures for auction, and bankrupted Victoria's Brittish Empire. Oops? Maybe they shouldn't have censored the news.
Absolutely beautiful, give it up for Kaiser Cat Cinema, the piano player, and the singer, what a song! The song is essentially the hopes, dreams, and sorrows of Syndicalism in form. There's a feeling of optimism in the song, optimism for a more equal world, which makes sense since the original song was made about real life events in Harlan (look it up). But most of all, there's sorrow and sadness. I think the song gives off this feeling because of the sadness that Syndicalists feel for how long the workers have been abused, been treated like slaves. There's sadness in the song because of the families who had lost their sons and fathers because of poor working conditions, or because they wanted a union and so got shot dead. This is just my interpretation of it though. Whatever the song actually represents, it's still VERY good and Kaiser Cat Cinema has earned a new subscriber.

Genuinely confused why paradox hasn't contacted these people and offered them some sort of deal to make their mod into an official game/or huge expansion pack for hoi4
There are a couple of reasons. If Paradox brought them in they would have to pay them to work on kaiserreich which they are already doing for free. If Paradox did do that and then sold the expansion the fanbase would rightly complain about a free mod being monetized. Then there is the legal problem of the kaiserreich intellectual property, there does not seem to be any kind of formal organization or agreement about who owns kaiserreich meaning everyone who worked on it has a claim to the parts they contributed to and there have been a lot of people who have contributed over the years. It is all around better the way it is.
@@FakeSchrodingersCat There are people who have been drawn to Hearts of Iron 4 specifically so they can play Kaiserreich. That's a pretty good deal for Paradox.
This is the coolest thing I've ever heard and has made me want to download Kaiserreich. (never played with mods). This isn't just a historical union song, but one that many american activists sing together, sometimes with slightly adjusted lyrics for their own purpose, but still the same purpose: take a stand with us or be on the side of rich and powerful.

As we'd walk the streets of each city, we'd seen bodies of children, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, shot down, or still burning, I could feel a piece of my soul and childhood slipping away, I thought that it isn't worth it, I should desert from the PSA, but, a sudden realization hit me, If I abandon, democracy may never return, I could feel my mind losing itself, with each Enemy KIA, I knew I was killing my Brothers, as I walked through the streets, I was left to myself my own mind, smelling burning Houses, Tanks, and bodies everywhere, the gunshot sounds rippling through the air, sounding like thunder, I wasn't paying attention just thinking as a slowly walked, I was separated from my squad, and in that moment, I felt something burning in my shoulder, I knew what it was, in shock I still jumped from cover, I'd landed by a burning tank, I'd put my hand over the burning and only see dark red on my hand. "No no no no no no please god no" I as the minutes turned into an hour, I had to play dead as enemy soldiers and tanks walked/rolled by, but I was starting to feel dizzy, I knew I was bleeding out, I had to do something, anything. after two hours the hostiles passed, I took a deep breath, then I realized, I couldn't move my arm, I got up, barely able to walk, and I made my way to a house nearby, but the door was locked, so I banged on the door for a good twenty minutes, then I was greeted by a family, they had a shotgun, and were scared, but they saw my wound and let me in, they did everything they could to treat my wound and gave me food and water, I would repay that family, but as I was in another room, and rouge rocket crashed through the wall, they were all killed in the end, and I was launched out the second floor window, into an alleyway and knocked out, we managed to win that battle, but barely, and I survived, ready to fight another, one thing I learned is that War is hell. (war, war never changes, the war never changes part was a joke, by the way.)

There are Kaiserreich novels, as in collection of stories that sometimes expand. There is no one big/main novel as it is pretty difficult to get it all in a single book (it is just too damn large). That is why a bunch of short stories is all you can hope for. One could make a story centered in a certain location of the world, but it would be a disservice to the franchise. I mean, think of Lord of the Rings with all of it being told from the point of, say, Rohan. It does not work really. That is why the series of short novels is all that you can really hope for. And there are some of them online, usually on forums. Some grow out of AARs (after action reports) of the Kaiserreich when the player has good writing skills and good imagination.

---
Which side are you on? It don't matter, as everyone' hands are dirty and you are ultimately part of a whirlwind, that won't stop until a million are dead and those left are to realize what they had just done.

Y’all know the battle of Blair mountain happened irl and this is a real life song about it
This song is about the Harlan County war, not Blair Mountain.
Such a pity it has so few views. It's truly beautiful song
Lyrics to this version:
They say in Harlan County,
There are no neutrals there.
You'll either be a Union man or a thug for J.H. Blair.
I'm a miner's daughter,
And a miner bows to none.
We'll be with you fellow workers,
'Till every battle's won.
Tell me...
Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?
Come of all you good workers
,
Good news to you I'll tell
.
Of how that good old union
,
Has come in here to dwell.
Tell me which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?
Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can

Will you be a lousy scab
,
Or will you be a man?
Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?
Which... side are you on boys?
Which side are you?
Don't scab for the bosses
,
Don't listen to their lies

That's a pretty good deal for Paradox.

i got chills listen to this
As we'd walk the streets of each city, we'd seen bodies of children, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, shot down, or still burning, I could feel a piece of my soul and childhood slipping away, I thought that it isn't worth it, I should desert from the PSA, but, a sudden realization hit me, If I abandon, democracy may never return, I could feel my mind losing itself, with each Enemy KIA, I knew I was killing my Brothers, as I walked through the streets, I was left to myself my own mind, smelling burning Houses, Tanks, and bodies everywhere, the gunshot sounds rippling through the air, sounding like thunder, I wasn't paying attention just thinking as a slowly walked, I was separated from my squad, and in that moment, I felt something burning in my shoulder, I knew what it was, in shock I still jumped from cover, I'd landed by a burning tank, I'd put my hand over the burning and only see dark red on my hand.

We should have a Kaiserreich show/movie, which is like darkest hour, saving private ryan, or dunkirk but alt history
Kaiserreich/Empire of Ohio the problem is that it would give some cannonality to specific timelines, in which the developers try to avoid that
Well they don't have to state the geopolitical situation, other than the stuff that happens all the time in the lore(like stuff before 1936 and the second American civil war) all they need to do is have something about someone on the front lines on some war that always is triggered in kaiserreich, like the civil war.
