Hey, Nathan. You could make a fortune cutting wood for turners. Not only bowl blanks, but pieces like 3x3x12 or 18" for us spindle guys. Black Walnut is also the most common and treasured wood for ceremonial gavels, like those you'd see at the president's podium at meeting halls. Just a thought...
Happy New Year 2025 everyone. I hope this is the year OTW breaks 200k subscribers. Let’s all tell a friend that may enjoy the channel and lend Nathan a helping hand.
Some pretty nice Poplar boards there at the first of the video. Some nice Walnut also. The side that has the bigger void in it might also make some nice rifle stock blanks as well. Those can fetch a nice price some times if the color and grain are as good as it shows in the video. They need to be 3" minimum thickness to 5."
As an alternative to bowl blanks, you might consider some table leg blanks. 8 & 12 quarter walnut is hard to find when I look for table and desk leg blanks.
Black walnut was one of the three woods that I was thinking of using when I made my kitchen cabinets, but I ended up using Hickory as I was having a hard time finding black walnut definitely has a beautiful grain to it…. Stay Safe 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼🔨🪚
I can really appreciate the frustration of hitting nails, especially when working with such beautiful walnut timber, it must be disheartening to say the least, just would like to wish you and family all the best for the New Year going forward, absolutley love the music you select to go with your videos, regards from Auckland New Zealand.
@ I appreciate it! I know that log is super valuable for you, so I know you have to do what gets you a good return, and that won’t always be bowl blanks.
What an absolutely beautiful Walnut. It's a real pity about the nails, but as you say, they are not the end of the world. What is even more disappointing is that void right through the log as far as slabbing is concerned. What positive does come out of that void is that wood turners will be 'licking their lips' because of the potential bowl blanks that might come out of it. Absolutely stunning grain in this log. Thanks for sharing this one mate. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
At 9:42 on the video looking at the end of the slab you just cut nearest the engine. What do you do with pieces 4/4-8/4” thick. Do you just burn them? I was wondering is it possible to get something like this in black walnut to make some handles. Figured if I didn’t ask I’d never know and Dad always said if you have a question ask. Appreciate your time and your channel very much.
Totally off of the subject... I think you should take one piece of something like Black Walnut and slip it in with the poplar for your wall. It would stand out and look nice. I say that because I did the same thing with a wall in a house I had a long time ago and everybody had good comments about it. We also used Red Cedar fencing boards in a wall in the living room as accents to some dark gray rough paneling. I had a lot of fun doing the interior of that house with raw wood and smooth paneling and the person who bought the place from me did so because of the way we had done everything. Take care, jack
Even with the voids thats beautiful wood. Someone would love the character of the void and resin it up for a table or island top. Guess whatever brings jn the $$
Wow, that’s some nice walnut! Seems there would be a good amount of dimensional lumber (4/4 and 8/4,) in the sections that can’t be slabs, that furniture makers would love. I guess it’s a matter of how to sell it though. Bowl blanks ship a lot easier.
@ I could spend all day driving to hardwood suppliers and sawmills in my area and not find anything that good. And what I could find in wide, premium black walnut would go for at least $20/BF
It's a shame about the metal and the void in that log 😔 Nice looking wood. We had a gallon jar that we collected metal that we pulled over the years, we called it our swear jar.
Seeing your woodmizer console there for a second made me think it would be nice to see that console and have you explain some sawing as it happens with what your you are thinking and how you use the console as you are sawing up a log. Kind of a look into your brain and how you choose what cuts to make and why. Like when you were getting the walmut loginto place what were you considering when you chose how you would open it up. I know that would slow you down ALLOT though, as well as open up a can of worms with negative people criticizing your every move. You strike me as someone with think skin though. I am excited to see you make all that poplar into shiplap and get it put up. I bet it is going to look great.
OUCH, that hurt some and you ain't done yet. MO blades Joe!!! You are getting some great looking wood out of that Walnut log and will do alright selling every bit of the cuttings. Stay safe and keep up the great videos. Fred and family.
It would be interesting to see where your wood is used. E.g. maybe someone can send a picture of their bowl from one of your bowl blanks? who else uses your wood? cabinet makers, door and stairs?, interior panelling?
I know nothing about saw milling. I often wonder how you decide the thickness of the first cut. Often it seems there is a lot of waste on these 1st cuts; firewood, bowls, garden beds, wood chips, or burn pile? I enjoy your videos with explanations of daily events, why, when, how, etc.
Here's a free idea for Wood-Mizer. What if you made a triple head metal detector that rides just ahead of the blade? Give it a cut off switch that stops the forward movement when metal is detected. (with a bypass in case forward is your only or best choice) The detector heads could be configured 3 across or in a curved configuration by the user. If Wood-Mizer could access low cost detector heads, it might be a blade and sanity saver. I would start off with the detector heads of metal detecting wands.
Been watching your channel for a while now years actually, and I always wondered about that arm that comes up and rotates the log on the mill. That thing chews up some wood and can't you put rubber feet on it or something and reduce the damage to your cut boards?
*- At 9:05: Why did you not turn the log so the holes were horizontal? *- Then cut off top slabs and stop before any voids showed up, cut a slab for bowl turning that would leave the rest without voids for clear slams.*
90% of BIG black walnut trees are going to be in a yard. How old is a tree that big, 100 years? So ya, chances are there’s been plenty of “yard sale” and “lemonade stand” signs attached to that tree in the past. Three blades+ is not fun, but you’ll make more off of that tree than 10 trees of a different species. Keep fighting the good fight Nathan. Excellent video, beautiful wood.
Happy New year🎉. I enjoy watching your videos BUT it would be great if you did obtain a metal detector and use it on your videos. I am a metal detectorist. Other sawmills use one before cutting. Just a suggestion that might save some grief. Thanks and keep on keeping on.

Your love of the wood is inspirational . I wish more city people felt the way that you do .
Yes well said.....

I hope you're right!
Ase usual Nathan, you nailed it. Really enjoy your channel, Calgary
Appreciate you watching!
Man Walnut is so very beautiful to look at.......Thank you Nathan......
Old Shoe🇺🇸
Best metal detector ever is a brand new Joe Maine Silvertip! Walnuts are nail magnets.
Happy New Year! That is some nice looking wood.
I love milling old logs. Milled a cherry last year that looked like trash and the inside was spectacular. Hate hitting metal, though. Great video!
The slabs with the voids would make a good river table blank.
Happy New Year Nathan and family. Look forward to another year of great videos.
Same to you!
I do love Black Walnut ❤️🏴.

Jim Kibler was looking for good walnut for stocks.
When Nathan said bowl blanks I also thought gun stocks.
@@robertmalmgren4640 The smaller cutoffs would make some really nice knife scales, too.
there is obviously so much science and experience that goes into taking a raw tree and getting the most out of it ... much respect
My heartfelt condolences on the nails in that beautiful tree. As usual, great video work and editiing. That last shot had to be in near darkness.
Appreciate the kind words!
I haven't watched your channel for a long time. It has improved. I may come back to it.
That's a nice walnut log Nathan I would really like to buy a few bowl blanks if that's what you decide to do. 👍
Beautiful wood grain.
Thanks 👍
Great gun stocks in that log!
You're pumping out the videos lately!
If you would use cobalt blades from Timberwolf you could hit 2-3 nails and just keep going. Their blades can handle a few nails.
Yes, I would like some bowl blanks from that slab.
Happy New Year to your wife, Bruno, and to you Nathan. May God continue to bless you, your family, and your business in 2025!

You already know I want some bowl blanks! That is some gorgeous walnut. Thanks Nathan!
Thanks, I will keep you in mind.
@ I appreciate it! I know that log is super valuable for you, so I know you have to do what gets you a good return, and that won’t always be bowl blanks.
Walnut bowl blanks would be wonderful.
Walnut is so lovely to see and to work. I feel your aggravation at the metal bits
Yes sir, it is!

Very beautiful black walnut log 🪵 !!

Simply beautiful slabs!!
Get some carbide blades and they will make life easier.
Happy new year to you and family.
Cheers,
Lee
Amazing coloration on that log.
It's a shame about the metal and the void in that log 😔 Nice looking wood. We had a gallon jar that we collected metal that we pulled over the years, we called it our swear jar.
That's one of those hybrid trees ,walnut and and iron wood
Yes, I would love a couple bowl blanks from your black walnut nail-infested slab.
I'd like to get the top an bottom 1st cut lol I seen few small projects could be done 😂

The clear walnut looked furniture grade...love black walnut.

Hi Nathan & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Nathan & Friends Randy
small battery blower save scraping the dust off the logs
For bowl blanks they should be at least 16 quarter, 12 quarter is not quite deep enough. Thanks for thinking of us turners.
Shop looks great.
Hey Nathan - that is some nice Black Walnut. Hopefully you will make your money back for all the blades you went through. Stay safe.
You're lucky to get black walnut that big. Here in N.W. Ga. about 18 in. is as big as we can get.
Agreed 👍
It would be interesting to see where your wood is used. E.g. maybe someone can send a picture of their bowl from one of your bowl blanks? who else uses your wood? cabinet makers, door and stairs?, interior panelling?
Gorgeous slabs
Yes, I’m very happy with them.
beautiful color
Thanks, I was surprised!
Beautiful walnut. Nails ... just part of it.
Will make some gorgeous bowls!
I could use some Bowl blanks.
Happy New year Nathen and family
Thanks!

Nice
Beautiful wood!
That’s the colors and grain of concrete you need in the wood shed.
Happy New Year Nathan to you and your family. I have to hang on in 2025 to get past 85
Yep it stuck through
Happy New Year!! That black walnut is absolutely gorgeous looking wood
ty
Hope you’re having a great New Year.
I need to get one of those nail pullers. Looks like it works good!
Nathan, what would a kiln dried slab go for?
Beautiful walnut.
Been watching your channel for a while now years actually, and I always wondered about that arm that comes up and rotates the log on the mill. That thing chews up some wood and can't you put rubber feet on it or something and reduce the damage to your cut boards?
Happy New Year! Thanks for sharing. Love that walnut!
Happy new year!
Nice walnut .
Yes, it is 👍
*- At 9:05: Why did you not turn the log so the holes were horizontal?
*- Then cut off top slabs and stop before any voids showed up, cut a slab for bowl turning that would leave the rest without voids for clear slams.*
can you epoxy fill the holes or will the complete board be broken in two? would be good to see how you continue to mill this.

It's such a shame that walnut has so many nails in it, it's some gorgeous wood. I hope the rest of the slabs are much smoother sailing.
Thanks for the great video! Hope you have a fantastic 2025!
Thanks, you too!
Nathan what do you charge for your bowl blanks including post to the UK Please
Could you use the sawdust from the walnut to fill holes and voids?
Yes
Great video, very pretty wood. Sorry about the nails❤
Thank you
That is some fine-looking lumber, Awesome, To bad about the yard tree metal, Why is it the best looking slabs come from yard trees?
I would love a blank from that log
Soon
Fine operation! Glad to see your wearing a non John Deere hat 🧢 😂
Happy New year🎉. I enjoy watching your videos BUT it would be great if you did obtain a metal detector and use it on your videos. I am a metal detectorist. Other sawmills use one before cutting. Just a suggestion that might save some grief. Thanks and keep on keeping on.
Do you ever save the sawdust from specific cuts/woods so that potential customers can use it to fill (nail) holes like on this log?
I do not
I noticed you blowing the sawdust between the layers of the stack of boards. Will that help with the drying of the boards?
You've got a 15ft hole in an 8ft log.
How much pressure are you umping into the blade tensioner on the sawmill?
Is it worth using a metal detector to do a quick scan?
Great video today God bless
Thank you! You too!
Black Beauty
Pretty pretty wood. Too bad about the nails, but you had an inkling of that when you started.
Ty
Thats some beautiful black walnut. I bet those nails are a pain
