Get ready for something special! The commander of the Mackinaw invited me onboard the ship to go on an icebreaking mission! You will not believe it! Check it out here! ruclips.net/video/A82Ops8Q8gE/видео.html
Boat Friends, I have some incredible news to share with you about this ship. It was truly an honor and privilege to receive an email last night from none other than the commanding officer of the Mackinaw, CDR Jeannette Greene, PE. She has extended an invitation for me and the Boat Friends to join her and the crew during an icebreaking operation in Duluth and Superior, before they head back to Michigan. This remarkable opportunity will allow me, and all of you, to see firsthand what it’s like to be on a this ship breaking through ice. CDR Greene shared that you can really hear the powerful sounds of the ice breaking while onboard, something she wants to showcase for all of the Boat Friends. This is an amazing chance to learn more about this extraordinary ship and the icebreaking process, and I am absolutely taking her up on the invitation. This experience wouldn’t be complete without recognizing the incredible leadership of CDR Greene, who commands one of the most remarkable vessels out there. I will be sharing the video of this unforgettable experience very soon. Please take a moment in this comment section to thank CDR Jeannette Greene, PE, and her crew for their service and for granting the Boat Friends this incredible opportunity. She will be reading these comments, so let’s make sure she knows how much we respect and appreciate everything she and her crew do each day, proudly wearing the uniform and providing vital service and protection on our waterways. ⛴️👍
Thank you so much Commander for inviting Mike to experience first hand what it is like to perform your incredibly valuable work! I can't wait to learn more.
@@vibewithmike They sacrifice a great deal to keep shipping open and safe. You have a golden opportunity to bring to light what they do. Your almost 50,000 subscribers will be in for a very special treat!
I worked on private yachts for 20 years and lived on the seas. I can say that our Coast Guard definitely does not get the recognition they so deserve. Many thanks to the coast guard for keeping our seas safe. ❤

tina - Small course correction ... ? "keeping our seas safe ..." might be 'safer' ? Cuz they are just sorta safe ... As a former harbormaster, I heard many people go out on the water saying, "Nothing is going to go wrong." Sailed across the Pacific 1909 square-rigger. Went thru a hurricane on 36' trimaran sailboat. Still here !
What a great job from the coast guard. My nephew was on the Spar for three years Now stationed in Ft Lauderdale The Mackinaw has-helped my grandson when he was captain on the Joe Thompson. Headed for Escanaba Now he is a pilot out of Port Huron to Niagara. Which is very exciting. His house is on the St Claire and last May got to go on the pilot boat to pick him up. Most exciting thing I ever did at my young age of 84 Thank you for filling this. And a great job. Besides protecting us the Coast guard helps in so many ways. I live on Grand Travelers Bay and we have them flying out of Traverse City Always enjoy your films than you 10:04

I was expecting the coast guard sailors to drop a boat down and tow the shelter back in!!! To see them walking over and collapsing the ice fishing hut still has me amazed at how little I know of frozen waterways, much less ice fishing! Thank you so much Mike.
I live in Sarnia, ON, our emergency responders used to do ice rescue training. However, they stopped because multiple people died, multiple times... So I was kind of surprised to see them go out onto the ice with no harness or anything to immediately cling to in case the ice breaks
@@ajcook7777 The ice presently in Duluth harbor is between 17" and 30" so they are quite safe except near the ship where the ice is freshly broken but if there was any worry they would have had life jackets , safety lines and used a sled , boat , canoe or rubber dingy

USCG patrols South American shores for drug tramp steamers and narco subs, USCG runs logistics to Antarctica, USCG captures real pirates in the Bering Sea (who hold-up legal fishing boats from various countries), USCG tries to save lives but sometimes the sea wins in the North Pacifc, USCG tends to all the nation's waterway buoys in the water and on land, USCG has it's own air force: planes & choppers with guns to kill engines on narco fastboats, USCG does intelligence, USCG does humane animal transfers, You name it... USCG has done it and will continue to do so. Very exciting career! Soon to be 80 and missing the action... me.
Really appreciate the good things you said about the Coast Guard. I retired from the Coast Guard at the age of 40 after 22 years of service. I'm now 81. The last sea duty I had was in 1975 on a ATF (USCGC Cherokee) built during World War 2. Things have changed so much! I really appreciate the good job you do with this channel and I watch everything you post. Bravo Zulu! (CDR Greene will explain that to you if you don't already know.)
DITTO ! Also retired USCG...at age 42 after 20 years. Coasties truly are good people. If it's USCG, it gets done. Spent 6.5 years in Alaska, did the Bering Sea, North Pacific and all of the Aleutian Island on a buoy tender in the mid 70s. Was the Radioman in Charge and we used Morse Code.... just like the movies! It was great!
@@brassslowhand3680 Wow! Another Sparky! Had 12 years as a radioman and made RM1 with no delays. But chief froze up and I kept taking the servicewide, applied for Warrant and OCS. OCS finally came through. Two interesting notes on my OCS class - we were the first coasties to be issued the new Coast Guard blue uniform and we also had in our class, in my platoon, a future Vice Commandant - Vivian Crea.
Your work is of the highest quality Mike. Steady cam, great zoom. Great composition. No irritating background noise [ music ] really enjoy your videos.
Thank you for taking the time to let me know you enjoy the content! I’ve never been a big fan of the background, noise or music. What a very nice comment for you to leave. I really appreciate you saying that. I really appreciate you being part of this channel too.
Very interesting. Thank you so much Mike for capturing this. Never even knew something like this could happen. Thank you to CDR Jeannette Greene, PE, for reaching out and also thankful for her crew for keeping the waterways safe.
What critical service the Mackinaw provides to keep the shipping industry moving safely. I am so favorably impressed with the US Coast Guard members and it vital missions. CDR Greene must realize what a huge public service you provide, Mike, showcasing the maritime operations in Duluth-Superior ports no matter the time, day or weather. Thank you all!
I don’t think they even saw me onshore. I believe that salute was for the person that gave them that radio information thinking there’s no person in that shelter. It was really cool to record all of this.
My many thanks to you for covering this story. I spent almost 22 years in the Coast Guard, spending 3 years in St. Louis on the Mississippi river, tending the the aids to navigation equipment on buoy tenders. Most people are not aware of what we do. When some shares just one of the many jobs we, as a service does, it give me a great sense pride,. Thank you so much and remember our motto, Semper Paratus, Always Ready.

This was so interesting, and it gives people not familiar with the Port Cities of Duluth/Superior a good idea of the layout of the borders and lake. My dad was a Park Point kid born in 1920 and on Thanksgiving night of 2000 he wanted to go for a drive down Park Point, as we drove along he talked about his childhood and life on the Point, I think my favorite memory was of the fact that their skates were these long blades that strapped to their boots and they would take sails (a very easy to come by thing around there) and 2 to 4 of them would grab ropes and let the wind catch them and para-skate across the bay or along the point depending on the wind. Once they got out past the Sky Harbor point and had to lose the sail because a strong wind came up... Not such a fun night as it was a long skate back to the bridge area where they started! He also mortified me by telling my fiancée of the time as we went past the Coast Guard base that he hated the G'damn Coast Guard because when the local guys were off in WWII slogging through islands and jungles or trenching and marching endlessly in Europe those a@@holes were stateside knocking up wives (not my mom). My fiancée was a Coast Guard guy. 😂🤣
Jen, what an unbelievably great comment. That was so cool to read. Take a look at the very top comment pinned for the video. I think you’ll be very interested to hear about that.
They only thought that was what the Coasties were doing. Been a rumor about them for forever! In reality, the other services are unaware that most of our counter intelligence is obtained by the coast guard during war and something like 40% of their people go to work for the CIA after WWII. Many go into intelligence and no one ever knows because they have a regular job. Their vacations in far flung places can be for pleasure, but they might also be delivering or picking up important papers for embassies and our government.
CDR Greene, thank you very much for affording us this awesome opportunity to see you, your crew and you amazing ship up close. This is fantasitc! Thank you again!

She is running an unbelievably talented and professional team of crew members on that ship. It’s really cool knowing they are out there helping and protecting.
Everyone tends to overlook the Coast Guard because they are more rescue and water way safety based, than the Navy whose more combat based... (Yeah I kinda paraphrased a couple lines from the movie "Guardian").... As a Public Safety Diver and team leader, I've had a few interactions with a couple sectors out on the Great Lakes, and I am glad that they train as hard as the do, and what they are capable of... These guys are pretty damn important and people don't realize it. They are the keepers of America's navigable water ways, and make sure that those water ways are safe to travel and bring goods in and out of. They are the Police, Fire, and EMS departments combined out on the water... Thanks for making this video and giving these guys credit for what they do..... From Lansing, Michigan. Wishing everyone a great week.

Hello my friend! It’s nice hearing from you. It was really cool to record this Coast Guard ship and crew. I know you love the ships just like me. There’s a special treat coming. Take a look at that comment that I pinned at the very top for this video.
Yes, the Coast Guard is a great service. They have been there for us through the worst time of our life, when Jeannette Greene’s sister Molly was killed in DC. Jeannette has followed in her sister’s path and has become a huge force in her own right, becoming an Old Salt to boot. So glad you all will get to meet her and her hard working crew. Sincerely, Marian and Bob West.😢
Today, I had the honor of spending a full day with your daughter, Commander Greene, aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. While witnessing the icebreaking operation and exploring such an impressive ship was unforgettable, what truly left a lasting impression on me was something much deeper. The camaraderie and positive environment your daughter fosters on that vessel is truly remarkable. It felt like being among a family of brothers and cousins, where everyone respected and genuinely cared for one another. This was not for show, but entirely real, and it was inspiring to see. Bob and Marian, I told your daughter that leadership of this caliber starts at the top, and it is clear she exemplifies this in every way. Her passion, intelligence, and capable leadership are evident in everything she does. The crew reflects her energy and belief in them, creating a culture where everyone feels valued and motivated to give their best. It is no exaggeration to say that this atmosphere of respect and unity is a direct result of her exceptional leadership. The day was filled with moments I will never forget, from watching the ship break through the ice in Duluth and Superior to venturing out onto Lake Superior. One of the most memorable parts of the day was having the opportunity to sound the ship’s horn to salute the bridge as we returned to Duluth. The Mackinaw itself is an incredible vessel, like a floating city, but what stood out the most was the dedication and professionalism of the crew. They truly embody the spirit of teamwork, and their pride in serving under your daughter’s command was unmistakable. You know, seeing the flag flying proudly on the Mackinaw filled me with immense pride in our country and in the people who serve to protect it. From now on, whenever I see the American flag, I will think of that ship, your daughter, and her amazing crew. She has created something special aboard the Mackinaw, and it is a testament to her extraordinary character and leadership abilities. Finally, I want to emphasize what I told her during the day. Leaders like your daughter are not shaped by accident. Bob and Marian, it is clear that the values, guidance, and support you have given her have been the foundation of her success. You should be so proud of the incredible leader she has become. Spending the day with Commander Greene was a true privilege, and I will carry the experience with me for a lifetime. 👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Mike, what a lovely and heart warming collection of your thoughts and emotions. Thanks for sharing with all us Boat Friends. I couldn't feel prouder of the men and woman on the Mackinaw.@@vibewithmike
@ Hello again! Thank you so much for your most kind and generous thoughts and words. We are so glad you were able to take a ride upon the Mighty Mack and hang out with her crew and good Captain , Jeannie. Indeed, we are very proud of Jeannie’s accomplishments. Mostly, she achieved those through her own volition. We feel lucky and blessed every time we think of the paths our children chose. Her crew is something else! All fantastic people in their own right. I often think of the sacrifices they make to their own lives and the lives of their families without complaints and a steadfast sense of duty. It always does my heart good to think about these young people being the cornerstone of the Nation’s future. As for that mighty and good ship, Mackinaw…… I too got the honor of traveling aboard with Jeannie and crew during the Christmas Tree Ship event of 2023. It was truly one of the most awesome experiences of my life. All the systems and abilities of the platform herself, were over the top, especially I loved the maneuverability when the crew did man overboard drills, albeit with a dummy. Jeannie would not allow her mother to plunge into Lake Michigan in November, as much as I’d have done it in a heartbeat. The other thing that struck me was the way she could inch sideways to the pier in Chicago with utmost control via GPS. Mostly I loved the throaty sound her stacks made as she was working or sitting. It made standing out on the decks a treat in any kind of weather and gave me a sense of pure appreciation. So glad you are doing all these great stories! I have subscribed and look forward to listening and seeing them all. Best to you and your endeavors!

Marianwest, you must be incredibly proud to have a daughter who is so professional and such an extraordinary leader, in command of one of the most iconic ships on the Great Lakes. I also want to say this, someone who becomes a leader like she is must have had amazing role models to guide her along the way, and it is clear you played a big part in shaping her journey. What are you typically going for when you’re out there ice fishing? Again, thank you for taking time out of your Sunday to drop a positive comment, my friend. All the best to you and yours.🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
I attended Veteran's Day at my granddaughter's school a few months back. About 150 G-Is were in attendance, most of whom were retired. As the kids sang each military song, that group would stand up. Only one active person stood up when it came time for the U.S. Coast Guard to stand up. He looked around, and his smile got the biggest applause. We all had smiles on our faces! I grew up in the U.P. Michigan. Did you know that Michigan is the only state surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes? Which Great Lake is not touching Michigan? How do we remember the Great Lakes? Use mnemonics HOMES. Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior.

I worked with a woman whose military husband had them stationed in Duluth just before SoCal. What a change for them. She had some crazy weather stories about life in Duluth. Frozen river - we've finally got low 20s in a swift drop. Cheers for the Coast Guard, can't remember seeing any since the late 60s in VN! Big surprise there.

My aunt evelin ryan had ryans cafe on park point south of eddy bartells barko loader shop next to the saratoga club back in the day. Eddy had a pursuit boat like the pt boats of ww2. Only bigger and faster. Before the coast gaurd had a boat to use at there station he would lend it to them for training and rescues. He help start the yacht club and ne of the lift bridge is a spiral flag pole he desighned and built and donated to the city. To this day it flies our country and states flag. God bless america😊
Really great video Mike showing the work of the Coastguard ship and her crew keeping the shipping lane clear and maybe saving someone’s life ( if there were anyone in that shelter ). Looking forward to the video onboard that superb vessel, and seeing her crew at work, nice one again Mike cheers.
My best friend sails with the Canadian Coast Guard. One winter, he did a month long tour on an icebreaker, stating that being in your bunk was like trying to sleep in a drum that someone was hammering on. He also said that around the locks and canals it was nothing to encounter 15 feet of slush. Boggles the mind and kudos to any sailor than do this year in and year out.
Here’s the legal part of those ice fishing tents in Minnesota. What a great episode - and WOW - Thank you to CDR Jeannette Greene, PE and her crew for extending an invitation to ALL of us!! Mike gets to see, Hear and FEEL the power of this great vessel and I can't wait for the video once produced. What a kind and generous gesture - sort of goes with the concept of the Coast Guard doesn't it. (No wonder Sal Mecogliano of WGOWS speaks so highly of the Coast Guard!)
It was really cool to record something different to give us a change of pace. Well, still keeping the ship as the theme. It was really interesting. Seeing people walk on the ice from an ice breaking ship.
I can't wait to learn more.

tina - Small course correction ... ? "keeping our seas safe ..." might be 'safer' ? Cuz they are just sorta safe ...
As a former harbormaster, I heard many people go out on the water saying, "Nothing is going to go wrong."
Sailed across the Pacific 1909 square-rigger. Went thru a hurricane on 36' trimaran sailboat. Still here !
Never seen the coast guard hop off the ship and walk across the ice. Cool thing to record happening.
Thank you so much for taking time to watch another video, my friend
I know right 😂❤
This could make for a movie: "Grumpy Old Men III, where the hell's my fish house".
What a great job from the coast guard. My nephew was on the Spar for three years Now stationed in Ft Lauderdale
The Mackinaw has-helped my grandson when he was captain on the Joe Thompson. Headed for Escanaba Now he is a pilot out of Port Huron to Niagara. Which is very exciting. His house is on the St Claire and last May got to go on the pilot boat to pick him up. Most exciting thing I ever did at my young age of 84
Thank you for filling this. And a great job. Besides protecting us the Coast guard helps in so many ways. I live on Grand Travelers Bay and we have them flying out of Traverse City

Thank you so much Commander for allowing Mike and us Boat friends to join you on your vessel, thank you again
It’s one of those situations where you’re like wow, I’m watching something new.

Thanks to the Coasties for clearing the ship channel. They do a lot of important work that most people never realize!
It is so true, and thank you for recognizing that
Everyone tends to forget about the Coast Guard. Great group of guys! Probably one the toughest job on the planet dealing with the extremes they do.
Don't forget the gals. The Commander of the Mackinaw is a highly qualified woman.
We respect the Coast Guard so much
USCG patrols South American shores for drug tramp steamers and narco subs, USCG runs logistics to Antarctica, USCG captures real pirates in the Bering Sea (who hold-up legal fishing boats from various countries), USCG tries to save lives but sometimes the sea wins in the North Pacifc, USCG tends to all the nation's waterway buoys in the water and on land, USCG has it's own air force: planes & choppers with guns to kill engines on narco fastboats, USCG does intelligence, USCG does humane animal transfers, You name it... USCG has done it
and will continue to do so. Very exciting career! Soon to be 80 and missing the action... me.
Thank you CDR Greene, and all those serving in the Coast Guard. God bless and stay safe.
It means a lot to me to have people like you thanking and supporting the Coast Guard.
Thanks for all your service. I enjoyed reading your comment.
Thank you for your service to our country, you are one of the reasons we are able to make these videos.
These comments are awesome! I love reading about the Coast Guard members!

Mike that salute was for you. Your famous around the globe now. Stay safe and warm.
We’ve been on the Mackinaw Ice Breaker. The windows up where the crew sits, is 5 stories above the water line. It’s an awesome ship.
It’s a really powerful ship, take a look at the very top comment pinned in this video, section. Wait until you see the adventure ahead.

Thank you Mike for this documentary about the Service of the icebreaker Mackinaw and the Crew
@marianwest3525 You absolutely have to see this post from today. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx5WQphI6WYET6WrxNTN92fu2p5RxdjJnz?si=t5JvRfg6oK8MwbWv
Wow Mike this is going to be a real treat for all of us Boat Friends, but especially for you to be onboard!
We are gonna have a wonderful time together. It’s going to be educational and just a wonderful time all for us
Glad to see the Mighty Mack still in use. Its the one ice breaker that can really do the job!
I have some really exciting news to share with you about the ship. The Mack is unbelievable. Check this out. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx5WQphI6WYET6WrxNTN92fu2p5RxdjJnz?si=7ZwtqaJq8u78haPB
Ya! That’s my daughter Jeannette Greene!!
On behalf of all of us in the Boat Friends community, thank you for raising such a remarkable daughter who is giving back to our country in such a meaningful way. We truly appreciate your comment and look forward to chatting with you again.
I ditto everything you said Mike!@@vibewithmike
Congrats to you!
She's beautiful.
Oh thank you for your kind and generous words. Not sure what we did to deserve good kids as we did but feel very fortunate.
My dad was in the coast guard in WWII. Wish here was still here, he would love this. I have the greatest respect for Coasties and all they do.
Huge respect to your father! He put the uniform on and served. We will always have respect for him and everybody else that did so. Thank you so much for checking out this wonderful Coast Guard ship! I hope that you subscribe (totally free) and come back to this channel for more ship adventures! ⛴️👍👋
Thank you @Vibe with Mike ⚓ for braving the cold to get that video for us. You couldn't pay me to go out on that ice! I want to see pick up trucks driving around first. Lol.
That's a special privilege to be able to video onboard the Mackinaw. That's going to be great! Don't forget the snowman ☃️⛄☃️⛄☃️! How about a mic over the bow to capture the sound of the ice breaking? Lol. Maybe after you set sail you could do a livestream onboard. Thank you for sharing @Vibe with Mike ⚓. Have a fantastic day everyone!
Robert! Thank you so much for the nice comment. I really would consider doing a live stream, but they have a lot of communication equipment on that vessel and as a possibility that the connection will not work as strong. It’s really nice seeing you on the Soo locks cam. I hope you will be on it a little later today. We will chat again, brother.
@vibewithmike I can see the radio interference issue. It's still going to be a really fantastic video. Thank you @Vibe with Mike ⚓.
We are going to have fun
Thank you CDR Greene!
Fascinating shack removal…
What an unbelievable commander! Here’s a little more information ruclips.net/user/postUgkx5WQphI6WYET6WrxNTN92fu2p5RxdjJnz?si=FrtUvoJ7feJoxKYM
Happy New Year Everyone ! Thanks to Mike and The USCG Commander and crew. Glad the Ice was solid enough for the crew to retrieve the shack.
It really was a great effort by the crew and the ship. It was really something to see! Happy New Year to you too!
Great zoom in on the action. Love our Coasties!!! Thank you for bringing us all the action while we sit snuggly in our warm living room, Mike. We are in for a lot of snow here and high winds so we battened down our hatches in the yard. Again, thank you, Mike!
Thanks for the kind words, appreciate you checking in!
@@vibewithmike You are welcome, Mike. We appreciate watching what you bring to us. We have such a great time. Thanks again.
Always learn something new. No ice shelters here!! Love from Arizona.
I agree, I don’t think the Mackinaw and I will be heading towards Arizona! 😂😂😂😂⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Wow!! Thank you for this amazing opportunity, CDR Greene!! Your ship and crew play such an important and sometimes invisible role that this will show many of us just what you do and how completely imperative that you are out there!!! I am very much looking forward to this video and learning and meeting you!!
I am very much looking forward to showing you what we do.
@@vibewithmike 😄
It’ll be fun
I saw that fish house there from the freeway and thought it looked in the way. Cool video, thanks
I’m glad they got it out of the way. What if 1000 foot ship was going through at night. They would have to stop because they can’t just plow into it.
The crew was brave walking out on the ice. Didn’t think it would be that thick. Thanks Mike
Doesn’t the temperature and the necessity of using an ice breaking ship suggest that the ice is likely thick enough to hold a person?
You just never know the thickness of ice. I’ve seen situations where the ice is thick in one place and you walk 5 feet away and for whatever reason it’s not thick.
Another great video. Can not wait to see the onboard Mackinaw video. Heart felt thanks to CDR Greene for the invite !
Thank you, she is a great commander!
I’m proud to have a son crewing on the Mack, and it’s been great to read all the kind words here from you folks!
Tom, I want to thank you on behalf of all of the Boat Friends for raising a son that is serving our country and part of our beloved Coast Guard! Big high five to you, brother! 👍⛴️👋
In Seattle, wishing the Midwest all the best! Stay warm and safe
Thanks Penny all the best to you, my friend. I hope everything is great there in Seattle. Go check out my favorite place when I’m there in Seattle. The West Point lighthouse.
Thank you for sharing, bizarre situation, and BRAVO to the Coast Guard for putting themselves at risk

@@vibewithmike Thanks for the update. Bravo on the Shout Out. Did not know the harbor was a protected area. January - no shipping and it's iced over
@@vibewithmike should have hovercraft or an airboat
Hovercraft, now that would be a video!
Thank you
Deb! I hope you are doing great my friend. Take a look at the very top, that I pinned in the section. We are about to go on a wonderful ride, my friend
@ awesomeness
That's incredible news on the invite out with the Coast Guard, that's gonna be epic!!!
Thank you CDR Green and all your crew for this opportunity to or is all to see.
It’ll be wonderful to show everybody firsthand the professionalism of these wonderful people, the Coast Guard
The total disregard for rules never ceases to amaze me.
I really thought somebody would be in there fishing
@vibewithmike It's no different than having a picnic on an airport runway.
That is literally the perfect example that compares the situation
@@vibewithmike So what do you mean, " Thankfully no one was inside ? " That was put there illegally, disrupted the ice breaking and put people at risk to remove it. I wish the guy was in there to pay a hefty fine. Anyway, Thanks for the great videos.
I’m guessing the ice cracked and they got out of there as fast as they could
I was a contractor in Northern Michigan and was able to do work on the old cutter and the new cutter Mackinaw. The service work is performed in the summer and I enjoyed working with the crew members, who all had a variety of backgrounds. It was interesting to see them get off the ship to remove the ice shanty as I wasn’t expecting that. I figured they would use the overhead crane and pick it like they do a booy I enjoyed the video.

Always great content! Thanks Mike!
Thanks friend! It was really cool having a change of pace type of video showing a ship with people on ice
Thank you, Mike, I had no idea the ice was that thick that they could walk on it already! How very interesting--Thankful for the Coast Guard.

I've been ice fishing this year and see a lot more of the ships more and more this year up close and personal
Allen, I hope you’re doing good my friend. I hope you’ve had some good luck with fishing so far this year. I’ve watched a few RUclips videos showing guys that are ice fishing. It’s really interesting. Some guys have real elaborate set ups with the cameras down below. There’s really good fishing in Duluth with walleye and everything else.
What an amazing awesome story! George, I almost felt like I was there with you. Thank you so much for checking out this wonderful Coast Guard ship! I hope that you subscribe (totally free) and come back to this channel for more ship adventures! ⛴️👍👋
Looking forward to the vid on board the Mackinaw. Love your vids, Mike.
Thank You CDR Jeanette Greene. This is spectacular to see. Thanks for allowing first hand view of the Coast Guard breaking out shipping lanes. (If I could be young again, my goal in life would be to be part of the Coast Guard.)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The Coast Guard's work is important and sometimes very challenging.

That is so cool! It was a great time to be in the shipping business, wasn't it? So many awesome ships back then that I’ve watched videos of.
Greetings to all Boat Friends and Mike. Fantastic video. You really wandered off the beaten path to bring us that remarkable piece. Many thanks to the USCG for allowing you to observe and share the experience with us.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I felt like I was in the right place at the right time.
Thank you, Commander Greene and Crew for keeping our waters safe, for the time spent away from family and friends. Know your sacrifices and hard work are vastly appreciated!! THANK YOU!🙏
Well said! We totally support the Coast Guard
CDR Greene, from one Captain to another, Job well done keeping the waterways safe and free of hazards to navigation / illicit activity! BZ!
What a nice comment. From one Commander to another. Respect at the highest levels. Makes me feel very proud to be an American.
She has a much harder job. We stay away from the ice and she charges right into it to clear the way. I can only imagine the the banging and groaning of her hull.
@redwingsinca1318 I have so much respect for our military. It’s such an honor being able to even touch one of these vessels, let alone, go on one.
@@redwingsinca1318 Boat Friends, BZ is a naval term for Bravo Zulu meaning job well done.

I know Park point very well! It’s such a beautiful place. So unique. It is such a gym. What an amazing connection. Thank you so much, Leslie.
Great idea
My best friend sails with the Canadian Coast Guard. One winter, he did a month long tour on an icebreaker, stating that being in your bunk was like trying to sleep in a drum that someone was hammering on. He also said that around the locks and canals it was nothing to encounter 15 feet of slush. Boggles the mind and kudos to any sailor than do this year in and year out.
Wow! Now that puts things in perspective. I can actually imagine that drum beating as though ice is getting hit. That’s crazy.
Here’s the legal part of those ice fishing tents in Minnesota.
According to Minnesota statute 97C.355, here are the key requirements for leaving an ice shelter overnight:
Identification Requirements
• The shelter must display at least one of the following in 2-inch high characters:
• Owner’s name and address
• Owner’s driver’s license number
• MDNR license identification number
Overnight Rules
• Portable shelters left unattended between midnight and sunrise require:
• The owner must stay within 200 feet of the shelter
• The shelter must be licensed if left unattended
• At least 2 square inches of reflective material on each side
Licensing
• All non-portable shelters must be licensed
• License costs $15 for residents, $37 for non-residents
• License is valid from March 1 through April 30 of the following year
Additional Requirements
• Shelters must be placed at least 10 feet apart from other structures
• Doors must be constructed to open from the outside
• Cannot be placed directly on public access points
Removal Deadlines
For inland waters:
• South of Highway 10 line: March 4, 2024
• North of Highway 10 line: March 18, 2024
Very interesting, thank you. Coast Guard, unsung heroes.

What a great episode - and WOW - Thank you to CDR Jeannette Greene, PE and her crew for extending an invitation to ALL of us!! Mike gets to see, Hear and FEEL the power of this great vessel and I can't wait for the video once produced. It's a very kind and generous gesture from the Coast Guard, and a great example of their service.
Such a cool video Mike!
It was really cool to record something different to give us a change of pace. Well, still keeping the ship as the theme. It was really interesting. Seeing people walk on the ice from an ice breaking ship.
@ yes indeed! I was amazed that they got out and walked up to the abandoned shack.
