  • Today is definitely a day that will go down in watchmaking history since it has been more than 300 years that the Huygens principles of regulation remained unchallenged and this day has finally come!!!
The genius Guy Semon, CEO of the LVMH Science Institute, and his team have been secretly working on a totally disruptive approach to the most important element of any mechanical watches: the regulating organ. This has been achieved through creative thinking and some very clever transfer of technology and the result is a monobloc silicon oscillator beating at 15Hz and super precise.
This is will what you will find out in the above video report, as we were privileged to meet this incredible team a few days prior to the official launch and are delighted to share on this very day this massive breakthrough.

It reduces complexity, greatly improves accuracy, enhances power reserve, consumes less energy, even has a nice style! Congratulations to the team. I remember when Mr. Jean-Claude Biver said he had in his office a magical novelty. He was not joking.

As always you have presented us with the best report about this very intricate new technology in watchmaking. I had the pleasure to hear about it in early May at a Collectors Dinner with Mr. Biver and Anish, but it has exceeded my wildest expectations. This as you said will surely prolong the live of mechanical watchmaking and the possibilities within. Cheers from Olten, Giacomo

Now this is what I would call a new caliber! So many of the so called new calibers coming out of the watch companies these days are not new at all. They are just minor variations on existing mechanical designs and do nothing new in terms of accuracy, efficiency, etc. This is truly an innovative mechanical movement design. It will be exciting to see it evolve.

I was heartbroken when I found out this was already 3 years old.
But I agree; traditional watchmaking combined with new technology is pure magic.
    Compliant mechanical design,
    Topology optimisation and generative design
    Additive manufacturing.
These will be key elements in future mechanical engineering and design, regardless of discipline.

    • @alabrrmrbmmr
      @alabrrmrbmmr 2 года назад

I feel the same way but now it is 4 years old. I'm fascinated by compliant mechanics and here I thought, wow! A product! But is there? 4 years later, Zenith has not employed this movement in any new watches. Why?
Sometimes I wonder if the theory of compliant mech has only very narrow practical use case. I mean, otherwise, we would have so many consumer products that use this material science. But we don't. And here we see what looks like an amazing implementation but 4 years later and it is completely forgotten.

I would have liked to have heard a bit more about the Hubolt's involvement with the Zenith Defy Lab, in particular the crazy case made for it (only Hubolt could make cases like this ha ha!), but perhaps a follow up video to talk about the timepiece as a whole?

Thank you so much for sharing with us.There are still some inspiration for those who seek new ideas but they have exercised and put thru trial which innovation and persistent out of the box thinking can equal breakthroughs such as this Gentleman here.So cheers to you Sir! My ancestors on the onset of the industrial revolution were inspired to improve time keeping and it was then the challenge was accomplished. When inspired x challenged x persistence = success.keep up your good work The clock is no longer ticking its floating.Charles.E Huggins Jr

"Silicon Valley meets the mountains" - Steve Jobs meets Heidi! LOL. You have an amazing way with words (and your not even a native speaker). Very impressive! It's always a pleasure listening to your presentations. Thank you.

WOW ! .. this beats even the Breguet's Transatlantique's 10hz..... which I thought it's crazy to achieve !!! Wondering if the low energy of the oscillator will limit the number of complications ? This is crazy!
Thanks for the awesome video Mark !

Marc, this is truly a great video and an amazing technological breakthrough. When the IsoSpring movement is fitted in a wristwatch in the future (hopefully), I can't wait for your take on it!

This seems like a phenomenal development. Would this allowed for watches to be thinner or a lighter?

This is scientifically incredibly interesting. Do you know if the oscillating component recovers its energy in the same way as a traditional mechanism?
On the other hand I can't help feeling conflicted, as the biggest thing that attracts me to watchmaking is the romanticism and classic feel of this beautiful art, whereas this is more like futuristic technology. This is simply my personal preference, though, since I always preferred classically designed watches as well.

But I don't think it's incompatible and just proves that it's still a dynamic art and science. Just love this idea!

It just doesn't have the hand-made, time, effort and love of a handmade watch. It looks like a production watch, but if you're appreciating watches, only for their accuracy and power reserve, then this watch can be your cup of tea! :)

Prof Moriarty Seiko Spring Drive is still the most precise movement. So stay with Seiko for the time being.

+Martin R. Krause I agree. I was being somewhat flippant. However, the Seiko Spring Drive is very complex and uses electromagtism, an IC and quartz -- all very intricate. What amazes me about this new technology is that it is purely mechanical, incredibly accurate and uses so few moving parts!
