Just addressing your comment about these filters having gotten better. I read that marineland bought out aquatech and they’re the one currently manufacturing these brand of filters. Not sure about the veracity of it all.
A couple of points, that is the aqua-tech 20-40 filter not the 30- 60 model, the closest marineland comparison would be the marineland penguin 200. Realistically both filters provide adequate filtration for a 20-gallon tank with a turnover rate of 8-10 times per hour. Both filters are made by the same company; matter-a-fact that red bio-grid panel slides into the slots in a marineland penguin 200 just like the Aqua-Tech. In my opinion, the bio-grid provides better filtration than the paper bio-wheel that has a tendency to slow down and stop spinning when it gets dirty or water logged.
It's hilarious that a comparable Biowheel 350 is cheaper at Walmart. The only reason I went and looked it up was I wanted a quiet cheap HOB without the dang wheel that gets stuck. I hear that Marineland builds Aquatech as well.
Hi Chris, I been a hobby aquarist for 10 years and I'm actually used a aqua tech 20-40. I agree with you that the old filter models are garbage. The new bio insert is a big improvement. In my opinion it a good filter just be mindful of the fish population and species. It does poorly with large species like koi. Trust me, my first was two koi and a shubmukin. It was high maintenance with 75% water changes and a new cartridge ever 1-2 weeks. The shubmukin lived and did well for a lifespan of 8 years. The koi were a bad idea. They live for 3 years. I'm now on female Bettas. I tried two different tetra filters as well after my first aqua tech The HOB tetra overflow all the time. The internal tetra whisper was good but hard to clean. So I bought a new Aqua tech 20-40 for my female Bettas. Tetras were low flow then the aqua tech. To reduce the flow I took the crappy old bio filter from the old aqua tech and pinched it into filter and slump it over the outlet so the water trickles back into the water without creating a current but able to maintain the same flow rate. I can get 2-3 weeks a cartridge with the Bettas. Also I only do 25% water changes now. You stated in the video, the course material should be first in the filter system. I was wondering if a pre filter would make this aqua tech filter a significantly better system because of course sponge that would be put over the filter intake?
These are good filters the new ones do 375gph. I have 2 on each of my tanks one is 55 gall and other is 75 gallon and both also have sponge filters in them water stays crystal clear. For the price u can't beat them
I like these because I cut the black tube in half and it shows less ..I like my aquarium to look as natural as possible don't like big box filters siting in the corner of the tank looks bad
love to watch your videos . They are so honest and so explanatory . I have learned a lot from you . I have a question for you can i redo my planted 10 gallon tank with the fish inside? my tank is 10 gallon . i will do the 55 gallon tank later this year thank you
Chris I have an emperor 400 and I bought the foam from one of your videos. I just installed but water is coming out the overflow. I just cut to size but I didn’t cut the foams thickness. Am I doing something wrong? Also should I put pinky floss before or after the foam?
Hey i have the aqutech 30-60 for my 35 gallon tank will that work good for me i set the tank up about 6 days ago but my water still isnt crystal clear do i have to wait a few weeks to get super clear water since its only been running less then a week
I use aquatech as well and when I want my water to be crystal clear in my tanks, I use activated carbon pellets (follow instructions on the bottle/jar on how much to use) in a small filter media bag. As for will that 30-60 work for your tank, it should work fine. But on my aquatech (20-40), when the filter media gets dirty , the water flow rate drops alot. So that may hinder how much water is gonna be cycled per hour if the filter cartridge is not maintained. (I have a 20 gallon tanks)
I have a 30g tank. I’ve had this aqua tech filter with only snails for 2 weeks. Every few day’s the right side is overflowing.. meaning the filter is too dirty?. According to aqua tech that means you need to change the filter. Lol. PS I never got a red filter with it :/. Id like to get away from the hang on back filter.
I just bought a 5-15 I have a coarse filter from my old filter & a pre-input filter around the tube also... Can I use that with the stuff that was included until I get better for media ?
I am currently using a cheap 5-15 Aquatech, & also a Terta internal filter both from Wal-Mart 😂 I have now been using a coarse sponge, a carbon filters pad & the plastic thing that you showed but, mine is yellow lol Also, I'm using that poly-fill (or water polishing pad).. Now, I'm using this for an aquatic turtle 🐢 The water stays crystal clear & is not smelly at all with my regular water changed & filter cleaning (which is really easy now that I'm using reusable stuff 👍🏻 Thanks for the help again🙏🏻
I do not recommend this filter, it literally sucked up my fish and killed it and nearly killed another. The input tube's suction is way too strong! I wish I'd have never seen this thing!
That happen to me as well. Some of my fish got stuck on the side of the glass and the side of the intake tube and they died. So what I did was I added a coarse sponge on the intake inlet and things are better now.

came here to say that was the 20-40

Yeah the aqua tech filters work good

Chris it filters 160 gallons per hr and that filter is for a 20 to 40. I have one. Great video, Ty!
Thank you I finally know that red part is important. Almost threw it out. Cleaned tank and cleaned it almost too much. Hope I didn't crash my tank.
Breathe Chris! 😄
Great review on filter. I never get tired of videos on filtration. What's your opinion of Biohome Ultimate media?
Susan Briggs - for costing $35 a pound.. I’m not on board 😆 my experience leads me to believe all those fancy ceramics aren’t worth that crazy cost
👍 Great point! Water changes are cheap and reduce nitrates probably as efficiently as Biohome.

I got aqua tech 20 40 but didn't come with the red part???
The aqua 5-15 does 100gph
The aqua 20-40 does 160gph
The aqua 30-60 does 360gph
The aqau 10-20 does 120gph. It says on the top of the box of mine.

Mine didn’t have that red media!
The Petco brand filter cartridges fit in the aquatech filters. At least the large ones that fit into the 30gal filters.
Can I buy that red insert anywhere? I got one with my tank and it didn’t have that
It's me again I don't have any problem with the filters it's when it pours out not on the sides . Just in the middle .Thank you .

Does anyone know where I can purchase the bio-filter by itself? Thanks
My filter is making a loud noise and no water goes thru it...?
Mine didn't came with the red grid. Does anyone knows where can I get I??
your tank shouldn't cycle by filter media change. Least not with saltwater
I need help getting it primed.. help

@@joycegill9593 Sorry what's a Hut ?
How do you put it together.
Can you adjust the water flow in this filter?
Nope! None of them have flow adjustments sadly :(
can this filter handle salt water?
Buy a cartridge and just put more of the chemical that it has in it
Lavastone bro!!!
You honestly didn't tell me anything about set up
Can someone help me n try to send me a message about this ????
Gls per hour is waaay overated once you load filter up with media☝🏽
