Couldn’t you just remove the filter and add a sponge at the bottom of the tube where it sucks to act as a pre filter?
I put a pre filter on mine and a aqua clear sponge inside also I put ceramic rings in there and with a sponge filter in the tank works awesome 👌
That’s what I did to mine. A tubular sponge pre-filter - just remove the basket filter. Add some ceramic rings, take out the replaceable filter and put in a sponge filter cut to size. I haven’t had any big issues after the modding.

Dude, very informal but I have to say that I was a little discouraged at the end with the turbulence part because that's what the part that was really annoying me. The old Aqua Tech filter has a directional tunnel that pushes the water to the left of the container which eliminates the turbulence. That is one reason why I like the old one. I had my old one for over 5 years and still have it. But I decide to buy this new one because of the the little I guess you would call it a little pipe screen that goes at the tip of the tube that goes in the water was old in start decaying. I got this filter on clearance for $17 brand new it's very powerful , but I agree with you with the filters but here's my question. What did you use to cut down the turbulence. What are those white things that you have in there that you did not say in your video.

Me personally I use aqua clear foam for 50 gallon like $3 on Amazon for a 3 pack

I'm not a rookie to fish keeping....I loved my tanks for about 15 years.....but have been out of the hobby for the last 10 years. Had 3 tanks at the time.....Central and South Americans, Africans and a simple community tank with Barbs, tetras, Mollies...etc. Successfully kept and bred Mbuna and Haps in the same tank. I now know this is frowned upon but didn't know at the time. Just got lucky I guess. We once had a breeding pair Electric Blue Johannis and Electric Blue Ahlis at exact same time. Anyways I have dragged my tanks out and getting ready to cycle. But after reading articles and brushing up with RUclips I'm finding stuff I didn't know....ie....NO HAPS IN MY MBUNA tank. So I ask about your dislike of charcoal in case there is something about using charcoal I didn't know????? Sorry I got long winded.
