How to Clean Your Fish Tank - NEED to Know

  • You should clean your fish aquarium using a gravel, vacuum or water changer. You can start by cleaning the algae off the walls of the glass, followed by the decorations. You can then start the siphon using the gravel vacuum and start to clean the substrate in the aquarium. The gravel vacuum is used to siphon water through it as it picks up debris on the bottom of your sand or gravel.
    Products:
    ➡ Live Plants - amzn.to/3VwMqFZ
    ➡ Popular Aquariums - amzn.to/3VNuPLu
    ➡ Rock & Wood - amzn.to/4emMp0d
    ➡ Best Lighting - amzn.to/3KNx8Yz
    Use the aquarium, gravel vacuum to start a siphon to start pulling water into the bucket. As the water is being pulled into the siphon, you can then clean the gravel with the end. While you are sucking water out of the aquarium, this is considered as your water change. All fish aquariums need water changes because fish give off nitrates and that needs to be removed from the tank.
    When cleaning your aquarium filter, you should gently rinse the pad out of the filter in your sink. Do you wanna be careful not to overly clean the filter pad because it holds bacteria which keeps your cycle stable in your aquarium. So just lightly rinse it under a faucet or give it a couple squeezes in a bucket of water. The chlorine from your city water supply will kill the bacteria so you don’t want to overly clean it in that water. It’s always a safe route to take a bucket of water from your fish aquarium and squeeze the filter pad in that water.
    Lots of fish keepers find it beneficial to buy a aquarium water changer. This hooks up to your faucet and allows you to pull water from your fish tank and also add water from the faucet. It’s a helpful device that saves you from hauling buckets of water from the sink to the aquarium to fill it. You don’t necessarily need an aquarium water changer. It just helps you from hauling the buckets of water to the tank.
    When cleaning your aquarium, you should never remove the fish from the tank itself. This is a common misunderstanding that you need to remove the fish from the tank so that they don’t get stressed out. This is completely untrue and removing the fish gives them more stress than just leaving them in the tank. When you clean your aquarium what you do is you just clean around the fish while they’re still in the fish tank.
    When doing aquarium water changes, you do not want to remove more than 30% off of water at one setting. If you remove too much of the water that new water you add put stress on the fishes breathing system. The new water added to the fish tank puts the fish in a bit of a shock and that’s why we don’t want too much water at once. That new water is what the fish have to get used to versus the water they were in already.
    Every fish aquarium has nitrate in the water and this is the byproduct of keeping fish. We need to remove this nitrate from the water and there’s only two ways to do this. You can utilize live plants to feed a nitrates or you’re going to have to manually remove the water and add new water that has zero nitrates. The whole idea with a fish aquarium is the keep the nitrates level down below 40 ppm.
    One figuring out when we have to do a water change and clean the tank we are going to test the nitrate levels. This is going to depict when we do the cleaning. If the nitrate levels are over 40 ppm and that’s when we are going to do a water change and cleaning. you’re going to want to get yourself in aquarium testing kit or test strips. Learning how to test your aquarium water for nitrate levels is fairly simple.

    You're one of the best informers in the hobby I've found. Keep up the great work! You actually didn't answer the question I came here to find out though in regards to cleaning. I have two paludariums with frogs and between splashings and mistings, I get quite a build up on the glass (calcium I think). I've found several people who recommend vinegar and scrape, or some other product, but the tanks are otherwise miniature ecosystems and I don't want to add foreign products into the system. I know it's a stretch, but might you have some advice?

    I wondered why I was cleaning my 2.5 gallon tank for my red betta. He’s turning white which is supposedly bad, I was doing a 75% water change every Friday, adding dechlorinator, and also changing the decor every time. I have colored gravel so that makes it a little easier. Poor guy, it’s my fault 😞 I watched other videos and did what they said. I’ll try the 30% less water changes and see if he comes back with colors

    Great video! Ive persnally never had an issue with removing the fish or large water changes. As long as the tank is cycled and you know what your doing.
    I dont always remove the fish. It depends on whats going on.
    I generally do anywhere from a 50% to 95% water change maybe once a month.
    Due to a temporary situation my fish are at my wifes grandparents. They have well water. Normally well water isnt bad.
    Unless like most well water its kinda fizzy at first. Then it settles.
    The fizzyness from th gases in the water will kill your fish very quickly. Called bubble disease.
    I killed half my fish over 2 water changes before i learned what it was.
    To remedy this i have 2 options. I can either do smaller water change. Up to 50% but has to be refilled by bucket. (if your water changer hose is connected to the sink, the gases in the water are still there as the tank refills and puts it in your tank)
    Filling buckets and allowing a few minutes for th gases to escape then add the water.
    Option 2
    Remove the fish, put in bucket with bubbler an covered with towel to prevent escapees.
    Do the water change but because its such a large volume of water (55gal)
    It taks up to 30+ minutes for those bubbles to subside enough to put fish back.
    When i was using City water i would change as much as i wanted, leaving fish in, as long as i added dechlorinator during filling i was fine.
    This video shows a much safer way of doing things especially if your starting out.
    When i was new to this i made plenty of mistakes it happens to us all when learning the hobby. Even experienced keepers can sometimes make dumb misakes. As long as you have your order of operations down and you understand the nitrogen cycle and listen to other experienced keepers who can offer new perspectives your aquarium keeping should be fun

    I now feel terrible. I'm new to owning fish, and I wish I educated myself better on how to clean their tank. I would take them out, completely rinse everything changes 100% of their water and add that bacteria and dechlorination syrup wait an hour and then put them back in. I had a handful of fish die because I didn't realise such a drastic water change shocks them.

    Hi, I hope this question doesn’t come across as stupid, but when you change the water, do you add enough drchlorinator for the tank? Or for the amount of water being changed? Say, if you are changing a 20 gal tank, would you then dechlorinate for the entire 20 gal or for the 25% water that’s being added to the tank? New to this whole thing. Thanks!

      We also had this problem once. It could be a problem with an over amount inbreeding if you had those fish for some generations already. Try adding some new guppies in there, male and female. There is probably no way to solve the problem of your current guppies but once they breed the next generations should lose the deformation. I am just speaking from experience here, so maybe double check my suggestion before you try it.

      If it's just one beta in a 10 gal tank you should be good cleaning it once every week. If you don't hv live plants and if you don't feed the beta too much, you can consider cleaning once every 2 weeks.

      @@piratharsana thanks to be clear cleaning is not the same as some water change, just cleaning the filter rinse and glass clean?

    • @piratharsana
      @piratharsana 11 месяцев назад

      Yw! I would do a water change and clean the tank on the same day but thats up to you. Even if you just set up the tank you would still hv to do the water change once a week or so, but cleaning the tank (as in algae) can be done once a week or whenever your tank looks dirty to you.@@tracymicheal2096

    My water is always green can I fix this with minimal money? I have blue decorative gravel. Can I fix this without removing the fish? I have no live plants. It's 10 gallons. I have a filter for a 10 gallon tank. I have one goldfish and 1 snail. I have no thermometer and I have an ammonia filter but I haven't used chemicals in the tank.

    I thought nitrates were good and that it was the ammonia and nitrites that need to be removed? How often would you say aquariums need water changes?

    • @terezastochlova5594
      @terezastochlova5594 Год назад

      Nitrates just aren’t as toxic as the other two - but they are harmful in higher concentrations. They accumulate in the water over time, so that’s why you have to change the water - how often depends on the conditions of your aquarium, but I think usually it’s around once in 1-2 weeks.

    You don't rinse your filter in old aquarium water? I heard u can squeeze it into old aquarium water to keep the bacteria

      Yes, that is correct.That's how I always do it. That's how I learned it, to keep as much of the good bacteria in the tank as possible.

    Im New to all this, what is the purpose of having a light over your tank?

    • @marinvanz.1924
      @marinvanz.1924 10 дней назад

      @drsatan The light replaces the daylight that plants and fish needs to grow and Living healthy and staying healthy. Just like people, we also has regularity day and night.. I always switch the light off in the evening. I always do 12/12 so 12 hours the lights on and 12 hours the lights. Greets from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
