You are my fish tank hero lol. My son has Autism and he was able to stay in the room and watch the whole video so thank-you for that. His interest is his fish so this is perfect
This is so informative!! I have three nearly perfect tanks (2 of which have been in storage for about a year) and with my final college fish having passed it’s time for me to get some more fishes!!! Thank you so much for this information! I can’t wait to clean my tanks and set them up for some new beautiful fish!
I ran across this video while looking for something totally different, but pertaining to aquariums. I already know everything in his video, but he's so funny and fun to watch, I watched it all the way through. His son his a cutie! Keep up sharing your knowledge...you have a natural way about you that makes people want to learn from you. Like my 8th grade science teacher, Mr Barnes. I'm 51 years old and I still remember Mr Barnes! Every student he ever had would probly agree. You are a Mr Barnes!!! Teaching is your calling...
When you hilariously chose to clean the filter before the tank, I yelled at my screen. Your magnetic personality forced me to watch the filter part without skipping through 😂
Thank you this is great! Am setting up a used second hand tank that looks really clean but you never know. Great tips with the cleaning and use of bleach, which is what concerned me. I don’t want to lose my lovely fish! He’s only a goldfish called Bob but I love him to bits and he’s outgrown his old tank. Hoping to get him a new mate once the tank and Bob are settled. 😃
Yea! All my tanks are second hand so thanks for the advice. I didn’t know about the bleach treatment so I’ll be able to sort out the plastic plants from my Mbuna tanks. 👍
I have been in the hobby for 60 years and the only new tank I've ever owned was the first one, which I got as a birthday present when I was a kid. And at one time I had 2-125 gallons, 2-50s, 3-30s, 1-20, 4-15s, 1-10, and various 1 to 5 gallons for quarantine, breeding, hospital, whatever, going at once. That was a lot for me.
I am new to the hobby and just bought my 1st used tank yesterday. Thanks you for the great in depth video you are very entertaining and informative. BTW love the socks!!!
This video is excellent! I just scored a 90 gallon aquarium (and unfortunately, a trip to urgent care for my husband when the lid bit him - NOT ANYONE’S FAULT!) from a group on facebook. Your reminders on how to clean it are much appreciated.😊
Another great master-your-basics video! I always learn something from you, Thomas, keep 'em coming. "If you film them, we will watch." ;-) Yeah, I really did just do that, haha.
Thomas and Brian have gotten me back into the hobby I enjoy watching their channel glad I decided to find them after no more posting on that other channel keep up with the great work you'll have 100000 subscribers in no time
Your channel popped up on my feed as I was looking for how to clean a tank. I realised how much I missed you guys, and the way you present content. Please let us know how you're doing, even if it's a hello/goodbye video.
This is a good video to have in the catalog. My parents have a really old (probably 30+ years old) 180 that they're giving me once I'm in a position to do something with it. I have no idea what shape it's in but this'll be useful once I get to that point
I am new to the hobby and I needed to see that filter cleaning. Thank you! I need that shirt and uhm........your socks....I’m gonna need them too....yeah
Thank you so much! Do you have any tips on how to clean a heater? I imagine pretty similar to how you've handled everything else but wanted to ask just in case!
If its covered in white lime scale / calcium buildup like the inside of a teapot, you can put it in a shallow container of warm tap water and a few tablespoons of vinegar or citric acid. :)
Hi Thomas, you were the one who got me into the hobby 7 months ago. Your videos are great and informative. Just a quick two questions, can I put wood in that bleach solution? Also what would be the best way to thoroughly clean the gravel after using a syphon. Thanks Thomas, Nathan
I'd avoid putting wood in bleach; would can act like a sponge and absorb anything it's in which can be problematic. For wood a firm bristle brush and peroxide are a great combo.
Hi there! Thanks for the video! I bought a used 280 liters fish tank, with sand, plants and lot of other internal accessories. I'm going to clean and disinfect the tank and everything before running the tank because I don't know if it was infected or smth. Do I need to disinfect sand as well or it's better to not use it at all? If so how do I do that?
Haven't seen u for a very long time. Glad to see u back. New channel, huh? It was very informative. I've tried buying one sided scrubbing sponges at different stores and they all say "not for aquarium use". What's up with that s**t?
Dude i love this but ......Wont use an abrasive sponge but Whips out a Hard Bristle Brush 1sec later LMAO ,......The quick second you even thought about it HAHAHAHAHA.... Just was funny that's all my dude you earned my sub
Can I use full strength cleaning vinegar on stubborn lime scale? I have standard vinegar but it doesn’t seem to be cutting it. Somehow it got on the lids of the tank I’m working on
We are moving cross country. We have found homes for our fish and now we are using this tutorial to prepare our tank and stuff to pack and move. Any recommendations for drying out the rocks and plants?
I just bought a used 55 gallon drained it and cleaned out very well ect. Been sitting there for 2 weeks now the filter is a 75 gallon. It's wet inside yet. I didn't clean it or anything yet. I'm just wondering what to do about the filter if I should clean it and if so how? Or if I just throw it on and let it do its thing?
Thank you for this - but what about round tanks? We have a huge old round tank that's been sitting in our shed for probably over 7 years now - it's not in terrible shape but still needs a good clean! xxx
Any tips on cleaning inside glass of brand new tank??.....lots of fingerprints and glue residue from the advertisement sticker. I just want to use something fish safe since it's on the inside. Thanks and great channel.
Excellent video!! I was wondering, is it also possible to clean used driftwood? If so, how do ya do it? One of my parents has a really nifty looking piece of old wood and I want to put it in my axie tank!
PS: Harbor Freight sells lots of special little brushes for extremely low prices! They also have a huge pack of razor blades for much less $ per blade than the dollar store
@Valeria Clinch. I have one acrylic tank, blades will scratch them and an ordinary scouring pad will as well. There are special pads at the pet store or on Amazon for acrylic tanks. Hopefully Thomas could do an acrylic tank clean up in the future. 🙂
What would the ratio be if I were to use water and vinegar instead of water and bleach? We have a tank that had goldfish in it and they died, think they were sick. And we are ready to clean the tank and get new fish.
I’ve been trying for days to clean a secondhand aquarium. Using white vinegar; several different methods. Every time I think it’s gotten clean...it dries and, surprise surprise, the glass is still cloudy. 😩 Any advice?
Just need a stronger acid. I've used muriatic (pool) acid for really stubborn buildup, but it's dangerous stuff to work with so you have to be super careful. Full PPE and it needs to be diluted dramatically. I dont recommend it to your average hobbyist, but it sure does work.
Can use this chemical to clean carnister filter from another tank??? Fill carnister filter with water and only sponges and keeep it runing with a bucket on table??? How long to keep it runing????
Thomas, any tips or methods you can share for removing hard water stains from the glass. I've tried white vinegar & baking soda with little effect. Very reluctant to use Bar Keepers Friend as the tank is too heavy to lift for rinsing afterwards... Currently I'm just hoping those stains won't show when I finally fill it with RO/DI water. Any thoughts? Thanks :-)
One of the best tools for that job is muriatic (pool) acid. You have to be extremely careful working with it, use the proper PPE, and it does need to be diluted in water as it's an extremely corrosive acid. Before going down that road, I usually give the razor blade a try. Getting a handle for the flat razor can give you a better purchase on it for scraping off stubborn limescale.
I was cruising around the Patreon account looking for how to leave a question that will get answered in the next live stream, and I'm a little confused on where to leave it. I was hoping for some guidance on where to go. Also, a small recommendation, y'all, should put your Patreon link in the About section of your Channel. Thomas is entertaining enough that I just watched this whole thing, even though I've been in the hobby 10+ years, lol.

This is such a handy video for anyone interested in setting up a used tank! I know my first tank was given to me :)
OMG your child is SO cute!!!! What a little gem! ❤

Great question! Safe to assume it is acrylic?
@@NaturalAquaria I think it is - what is the best solution to clean that? Thank you so much x
I use the small brushes that come with silicone straws

How do you wash hand towels? I have many but I keep hearing not use detergent. Do think hot water and vinegar will be ok?

Since this was 3 years ago, hopefully you found someone who answered this for you. Shame on this channel for not doing it back then.
will bleaching ornaments remove any nitrates they have soaked up?
Not sure; sounds like a good experiment!
A few hours of converting tanks to lipless made me a lot less nervous about nicking the silicone with a blade.
Awesome video
Can I add more silicon to ensure it is safe to use?
U could probably use pipe cleaners in the tube because pipe cleaners bend. They are also called chenille stems and they have them at dollar tree
PS: Harbor Freight sells lots of special little brushes for extremely low prices! They also have a huge pack of razor blades for much less $ per blade than the dollar store
I wish Thomas had a youtube channel
Great video!
What if the silicone has mold on it? How do I clean that off? Or would it be best to cut the silicone off and reseal it?
I got a 27 year old 109 gallon tank for free thank you for the video
Thanks J
Can you use blades on acrylic tanks?

Any tips on removing salt creep from a used tank?
Warm water will dissolve salt but not the calcium carbonate buildup. Citric acid, cleaning vinegar, etc. Will work well. :)
