“I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow?,” “If You Love Me, Let Me Know,” “Please, Mister, Please.” She’s Australian and started with country-ish and pop in the 70’s, and then some unremarkable 80’s stuff.

Our Livvy ( yes, I'm an Aussie ! ) is a national treasure .. Such a talented and successful singer, and a beautiful person ( inside and out ) too .. A personal favourite of mine is her 1971 cover of the Bob Dylan classic "If Not For You" .. But her biggest hit was "Physical" from 1981, which stayed at No.1 in the US for 10 weeks .. It has an iconic video that was released with it .. Check it out .. Wayne

@@isotopia7681 You're right .. She certainly was unique .. You can tell it's ONJ as soon as you hear one of her songs .. And yes, she sure did have a melodic voice .. So pretty and enchanting .. Just like Livvy herself !

This is part of the soundtrack to "Xanadu ". She appeared in the film as a muse. The soundtrack is killer. All the songs were pinned/arranged by Jeff Lynne of ELO. The film didn't do well but the songs from the film were Uber successful. It was 1980

    • @jilliantaylor5122

No, half the songs were written and arranged by Jeff Lynn, the other half of the soundtrack was written, arranged, and produced by John Farrar, her long time song writer and producer. He wrote Magic, Suddenly (both hits), Whenever You’re Away From Me, Fool Country, and Suspended In Time. The film more than broke even, and the soundtrack went multi platinum.

ONJ started at 15 years old on TV in Australia in the 60's. She won a local talent contest and won a trip to England, which she took at age 17. She worked with a friend, Pat Carroll, as a duet called Pat and Olivia. When Olivia was 19, her friend's Visa expired and had to return to Australia. Olivia was born in England, so had no issue in staying, where she pursued her solo work. She had the same manager as Cliff Richard and ended up working with Cliff Richard and did lots of TV there as well. Her early music was pop, folk and country pop. Her first solo album release was in 1971, which was a covers album. Her album released in 1973 contained the song "Let Me Be There" which started her major US chart hits. She was still living in the UK at the time. In 1974, she was selected to represent the UK at Eurovision. At the time, she was having chart success in the US. Thankfully, she did not win Eurovision, which made the decision easy for her to move to the US, where audiences embraced her music. As a matter of fact, ABBA's first prime time appearance on US TV was on Olivia Newton-John's TV special in early 1978, as she invited them. Her catalog of music is varied and extensive and I think her huge pop hits tend to overshadow her enormous talent. Barry Gibb has often said that he considers ONJ the best female vocalist of her generation. She is not a belter, but her ability as a vocalist to interpret a song is absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, not many reactors are showing her much respect. I only know of one reactor who is embracing this amazing artist. I hope you react to more of her music. Thanks!😀

Hey Fabian!!! Thanks for playing this. I'm remembering just how much I was in love with this gorgeous singer with the breathy, soft voice. Guess I still am. Hard to really get a good idea about her, watching blurry uploads that seem to be the rule online. I have some of her albums, and there was always a big picture of her beautiful face, replete with the hair. I was always reluctant to put the album back in the stack. (Same reaction with Sheena Easton.) You're catching her late. Mike I, below, mentioned two of her really big early hits, "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow," in which she showed off her very sexy, soft voice.
I love that you found "Magic," because it draws me in with its unexpected chord progressions. From the movie, Xanadu, this song and another, "Suddenly," were refreshing to my ears. John Farrar wrote both songs, which have unexpected transitions. Farrar doesn't do I-IV-V-I, rinse and repeat. For example, with Magic, they're in D, so the first two beats are D Major, but then 3 and 4 are D7b5. I've never written that progression in anything. Farrar is a brilliant and inventive writer, which lent a kind of mysterious sound to the pieces in that movie.
Olivia had a very effortless vibrato and sang on-pitch and could go very high, extremely feminine; and, again, was gorgeous. Did you know she was good friends with Karen Carpenter? Here's a video you might get a kick out of, what with your penchant to really get to know the artists you play on your channel: ruclips.net/video/Tvtb63u96xY/видео.html On Merv Griffen, they recall a boating incident.

Some of her earlier tunes are I Honestly Love You, Let Me Be There, Have You Never Been Mellow, Physical, Please Mr. Please, If Not For You, Come On Over, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), A Little More Love, Make A Move On Me, and Heart Attack.

This song was written for her second film, "Xanadu" which co-starred Michael Beck ('The Warriors') and the legendary Gene Kelly ('Singing In The Rain', 'An American In Paris') in his final film role. The movie tanked at the box office and critically and is considered a cult movie. It's actually one of my favorites. The movie however had a soundtrack that had a lot of hits..."Magic", "Xanadu" (with Electric Light Orchestra), and a few others...the entire film, which was a musical, had songs by Olivia (written for her by John Farrar) and ELO (written by Jeff Lynne, including "Xanadu").
As for hits..."Have You Never Been Mellow", "Physical", "Twist Of Fate", ""Take A Chance On Me", "A Little More Love", "Hopelessly Devoted To You" (from 'Grease', her big solo number), and "Make A Move On Me". Her sixties career, I don't really know. I was a fan in the 80s, as she was my first "star-crush", and 'Xanadu' was my introduction to her.

It was a hit in 1980, #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, and 5 weeks at #1 on the AC Chart. She doesn’t have big hits from the 60s, she did more tv variety shows then. Her first big international hit was in 1971 with If Not For You (a cover of a Bob Dylan song). Her first top ten in the US was Let Me Be There in 1973, that’s what really put her on a global radar. Then she had her first international #1 hit for her song I Honestly Love You in 1974, for which she won two Grammy’s. She then had two smash hits from her stellar album Have You Never Been Mellow in 1975 (the album went to #1), the title track hit #1, and Please Mr. Please which peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 (and stayed in the top 40 for 12 weeks the summer of 75), she went onto have gold albums back to back (the didn’t have platinum certification back then), and then released her Greatest Hits album in 1977, which went double platinum. 1977 was the year platinum status was recognized in the US. She was the big star of Grease, without her it would have been a flop. Hopelessly Devoted To You was nominated for an Oscar, which she performed live at the Academy Awards in 1979 to a standing ovation. She then released her Totally Hot album in 1978, which went platinum, and spawned two more huge hits for her, A Little More Love #3, and Deeper Than The Night. Then Magic, Xanadu (title track of the movie), and Suddenly. Then came her biggest commercial success with her Physical album. The title track was the biggest hit of the entire 80s, TEN weeks at #1, beating out MJ, Madonna, Prince, etc. The album is multi platinum and also gave her another top ten hit with Make A Move On Me. Then her second Greatest Hits was released at the end of 1982, giving her another top ten with Heart Attack, and the album went double platinum. Then she did another movie with John Travolta, the film did not fair well at the box office, but the soundtrack went multi platinum, and gave her another top ten hit with Twist Of Fate. According to Billboard Magazine she was #1, charting the most weeks in the 70s, beating out all of her contemporaries by a Landslide (ONJ reference there), and was ranked #4 for the 80s. She was the highest paid and most successful female solo artist from 1974 to 1984. That video is from 1980, it’s just a misprint. It was on The Midnight Special promoting her film Xanadu, (I watched it live) best musical soundtrack ever in my opinion, another multi platinum album. Magic is my second favorite of her big hits right after A Little More Love. Give her more respect. She has a 3.5 octave range and has sold over a 100 million records worldwide, and those are low estimates, making her in the top 50 musical artists of all time. Show her love. She is an amazing person who I have had the honor of meeting over a dozen times. Oh, and her and her daughter Chloe had a #1 on the Dance Chart in 2015 (yes, she still records music). The list of her awards and accolades is a mile long globally. Grease was only a part of her career, but people are obsessed with that film. My second favorite musical after Xanadu. Yes, clearly I am a fan. Try listening to her Totally Hot album and her Physical album, also Have You Never Been Mellow.

The earliest music I know of from ONJ was in the early to mid 70's. She actually leaned more country than pop with songs like Let Me Be There, If You Love Me Let Me Know, and Come On Over. In about 74 or 75 she crossed over to pop with Have You Never Been Mellow. She had a number of other hits as well before starring in Greese. Then she did several musicals. Magic was in the movie Xanadu where she starred with Gene Kelley and did several collaborations on songs for that movie with ELO on the song Xanadu and on Suddenly as a duet with Cliff Richard.

My opinion- Her main-stream hits started in about 1973 and ran through about 1983, while she gradually shed her ‘good girl’ image to something more... naughty. Also, it seems like any kind of movie soundtrack she touched turned to gold (Grease and Xanadu). “Physical” was pretty controversial back in the early 80s and I recommend you watching the video. Starting in about 1979, there was a huge shift in music anyway, but that’s a long discussion for another time. Peace!

I saw this when it originally broadcast on the Midnight Special, a weekly, highly successful music show, back in the 1970's & 80's,. This broadcast was from July 1980. She hosted the show that night and was promoting her upcoming movie & it's music, "Xanadu". (The crowd was a studio audience so that may be why they weren't as "active" as maybe an actual concert audience would be). It is 1980, not 1978 as the graphic says along the bottom. The summer & fall of 1980 were huge for Olivia Newton-John & the Electric Light Orchestra with their songs from "Xanadu" (pronounced Zan-uh-doo). Their music was being played a lot! She has an incredible library of hits including the #1 song of the whole decade of the '80s, "Physical". Was at the #1 spot on Billboard for TEN sensational weeks!! From November 1981 through January 1982. No small feat. Please check out some of her other stuff! BY the way, I'm subscribing to you! :)

Crowds were silent and not engaging during the televised audiences in the 1970’s and early 1980’s BEFORE MTV. Once MTV arrived, that’s when the crowds got hyped

There's actually a video clip on RUclips (sorry I don't have the link) of ONJ, ABBA, and Andy Gibb (younger brother of The Bee Gees) from a TV show they did together. They may have been competing for the same audience, but they seemed to be friendly with each other.

I recommend checking out the rest of the xanadu soundtrack especially Suspended in Time. Soul Kiss is definitely a song worth checking out as well. other songs I suggest are I Need Love, I Honestly Love You, A Little More Love, and I could go on and on. Also her song Physical spent 10 weeks at number 1 on the charts and is the number one single of the entire 80's.

Olivia Newton John and Linda Ronstadt were my favorite female singers way back then. I really liked Let's Get Physical and her earlier country music leaning material.

Olivia, pretty, sweet, talented, beautiful, but strong voice. She still looks great, and is living so healthy these days, even with fighting cancer . Classy, and sexy always. ♡

Before she hit big in Grease she mainly was on the light country side of music in the U.S. Often doing covers.of course here in Australia she was big before that.

Olivia Newton-John was huge and her single physical was the top song of the decade in the 1980s surpassing even Michael Jackson. Although I do like magic much better.

...man... if that video and song by this babe doesn't give you a bone... you ain't alive... although if I was in the audience back in time...I'd be sitting there stunned... she was in a weird British sci-fi comedy musical thing...kind of a Monkey's style nutty 1960-early '70's movie... called Toomorrow
