Olivia was a hit maker long before Grease. An English-Australian singer who made it big in the U.S. in 1971 with "If Not For You". Soon to follow were "Have You Never Been Mellow", "I Honestly Love You", "Let Me Be There", and two duets with Andy Gibb, "Rest Your Love on Me" and "I Can't Help It". She was the image of love and light in the 70s. RIP Lovely Olivia🌹

Magic is from the movie she did after Greace called Xanadu which was a bomb of a movie with a fantastic soundtrack. One side is ONJ and the other side of the soundtrack is ELO. She and ELO combine on a song that is the epic theme to the move called Xanadu that was a big hit as well. She started in music before her acting career.

'A Little More Love' was released the same year as "Grease". I know it was a huge hit for her and it might be my favorite song of hers. My mom had her first hit album in the house when I was 3-4 years old and when I looked at it I was really taken by her beauty on the cover, just standing in a green pasteur.....wow, the 70's were fun.

"A Little More Love" was quite a big hit single in 1978, as was the album it came from, the aptly-titled, Totally Hot. The 2010 digital HD Japanese remaster of that album, sounds incredible. Her voice, esp. on that song, sounds crisp, clear, and powerful. Between that single and "You're The One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You", the woman was GOLD in 1978 and onward...

Born 1948 in England. Emigrated to Australia 1954. Started singing at 14. Won a talent contest in 1965 and coincidentally the prize was a trip to Great Britain. So yes was an established singer with hits before Grease in 1978. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺

The feeling I get from her when she performs songs like this is this weird approach to sexuality without ever being blatantly sexual. It's like when you're in the 3rd grade and you have a crush on your teacher but you're still too young to experience all the aspects of what "attraction" might entail. There is a free innocence that overrides the rest of your chemistry, so that all you really feel most is the swelling and contraction of your heart. Whatever it is, she mastered it like no other. What a legend.

Olivia was already famous by the time Grease came about. I think she had already recorded 7 albums when she got the role of Sandy on Grease. She is a 4 time Grammy winner (with at least 2 of them before Grease). Her music style changed after Grease as she became a pop superstar! Her first hit single was 1971s 'If Not For You.' Her 1981 hit 'Physical' was number 1 for 10 weeks and became the number 1 song of the 1980's decade!!

It’s been a month since her passing and I am still carrying a very heavy heart. Thank you for this reaction. It hurts me that you did not know she was a singer and that you may have even considered that she wasn’t singing in “Grease”. She has sold over 100 million albums and between 1978 and 1984, she was the biggest female pop star in the world. She was the biggest selling female recording artist of the 1970’s and the second biggest selling female recording artist of the 1980’s. I became a huge fan in 1973 when I was around 8 years old and heard her first major hit in the US called “Let Me Be There”. Before “Grease” in 1978, she already had 3 Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music and American Music Awards, several top 10 hits, two #1 hits. She actually released her first greatest hits album in late 1977. She never considered herself “an actress”. She was also the first female recording artist to re-invent herself. “Grease” gave her the opportunity to expand her music into a more soft rock / rock / pop sound. And with her vocal ability, she could sing in any genre. She is a true ICON! Many of my generation adore her. She battled breast cancer for 30 years and spent those years raising awareness and raising funds to fight and research cancer. She helped build the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center (in conjunction with the Austin Hospital) in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia. And tirelessly devoted herself to raising funds to support this endeavor. She was truly an amazing human being and no one ever had a bad thing to say about her.

She mostly did country music in the 70s. Post Grease she did another movie, Xanadu, with a soundtrack of some of her biggest hits (and songs by ELO). Her Physical album came out the following year and was a new sound for her in 1981. The title track is also the biggest song of the 1980s and was actually banned in some places. Seems tame by today’s standard.

She was a big big star. She had a number 1 hit in I think 1974 with I honestly love you. She was famous before Grease. Grease was my first album at 6 years old. I had the 8 track of Totally Hot! Yes, 8 track. Xanadu was my thing at around 8 years old. I was obsessed with the movie and soundtrack. After that her greatest hits vol 2 came out and Physical. She would win every female singer award. Rick Springfield would win every male singer award. I had all his albums too. Soul Kiss in 1985. She walked away after that album to have her daughter. She never had a number one after Physical in 1981. It was number 1 for 10 weeks so she's like number 11 or 12 on the singles chart of songs at number 1 for the most weeks. That's for all songs ever. Losing her was hard. She was my favorite. She was such a light in this world and did so much good with her cancer center. The world is a bit darker without her in it. She was my whole childhood and that feels much further away now too. RIP.

This song was Olivia Newton-John's first #1 hit song of the 1980s. The song spend a total of 4 weeks at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the summer of 1980. This song was an awesome song indeed!!!

This is my favorite song by Olivia. She started out as mainly a country artist in 1970, and had many top hits and albums WAY before she did Grease. In the late 70's she transitioned to more of a pop singer.

Wow - it's so sad that Olivia was so underrated. I am a big fan - she was a great singer, actress, and philanthropist , down-to-earth with a demure manner. She was gorgeous - beautiful voice, body, face, hair.

In the beginning of her solo career she didn’t perform live….she was informed if she wanted to be popular with her audience she needed to tour world wide….and she did…

She had many live performances early in the US on television shows like the Tonight Show, Merv Griffin and some shows in the UK. When she first arrived in the US, she embarked on live performances at colleges. She was still new in the US, so that made sense.

Love love love you Olivia Newton John. Her style morphed after Grease from the Girl Next Door type to a bit racier sexier rocker girl. It went along with my transition into puberty perfectly. Needless to say I have loved ONJ practically my whole life and for me this is my favorite song of hers and of course she had boatloads of hits. We will not the like of her again. Such talent beauty grace poise . RIP Angel

... a stellar recording artist many years before "Grease" and long after "Grease". Her biggest hit, "Physical" stayed at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks. Her first movie role was in the movie "Toomorrow" in 1970. The song you just played, "Magic", is from the 1980 movie "Xanadu" and it was a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In fact, the soundtrack albums for "Grease" and "Xanadu" were both chart topping albums. John Travolta and Olivia starred in another movie together in 1983 called "Two of a Kind".

So happy you did this song reaction. Wish more people would review this song. Been a fan from the 70's although she was performing from the 60's onwards on Australian TV. She had a phenomenal music career since she started at age 14 performing with Sol Four, a short-lived all-girl group in a coffee shop owned by her brother-in-law. She started to appear on Oz [Australian] TV in the early 60's. If you want to know a bit about Olivia’s journey, here's a link worth watching ruclips.net/video/91pBZdSGVGc/видео.html
Anyhoo, thanks for enjoying & reacting to her music. We will miss her greatly in Oz xo

Magic is a good first choice. I see a lot of reactions doing Hopelessly Devoted to You off of Grease, which is great, but Magic represents Olivia Newton John's very successful singing career outside of Grease. While this version was a dubbed version, I don't mind that at all because the recorded version brings out the best in this great song.

Olivia started singing in the 60's and had a huge career, then 2 huge musical movies, Grease and Zanadu. This song is from Zanadu. Whereas John Travolta is an actor, comedy actor and can sing.John's huge tv series hit was Welcome Back, Kotter. he was fabulous in that...Vinnie Barbarino...so funny...

I saw Grease in a theater when it first came out. On the same day I went and bought the soundtrack on vinyl still own it today. I make it a point to watch the movie every so many years.. Because it's awesome my favorite character was frenchy. Stockard Chaning who played Rizzo should of won an academy award for that role. She played the character to perfection.
BTW My brother had a huge crush on Olivia, She passed on his birthday

ONJ was and always was a SINGER first! Her abilities landed her on Grease. Then came Xanadu which was the movie that made a young kid like me fall for her hard! Plus Xanadu also introduced me to Electric Light Orchestra and the collaboration led to my first rock album and most played ever!

Olivia was a childhood crush..another movie that Olivia and John Travolta were in was Two of A Kind -- has a pretty good soundtrack. If you want to hear their voices, they had a duet there, "Take A Chance". Other notable Olivia tracks in that film were her "Twist Of Fate" and "Living In Desperate Times".
