Thanks Dave, I always appreciate and learn from your actual hands on guitar set up videos. And you have a great, friendly presence that invites friendship with your viewers.
A bad wire, a loose pot , a loose Jack, neck with no tension, action a mile high, and 2 loose strap buttons. All in a day's work!! Thanks Dave for showing us how its done! You are the man!!
@@donnix768 There is a Fender recommended string action of 7/64" to 5 /64" of an inch. You are correct, that different players prefer different action.
I’m new to your channel dave, but i’m so glad i found it. you’re a master at your craft and your sense of humor puts a smile on my face. i hope this new year treats you well.
I have a jazz bass that exact color scheme. Ot started off as a fretted jazz bass DIY kit. Replaced the neck with a Mexican Fender jazz neck and noiseless pickups. Real Carbon Fiber pickguard. Gloss black pickguard plate. Babikz high mass bridge. Hipshot tuners. And i painted it pretty much that same blue. Watching this video was a complete must for me!

Over the years I've had several honest LOL moments watchin' this channel, but this was the 1st time I've yelled "FUCK YEAH!" (approximately 3 notes into the Alice song). Almost din' even watch this one as I have zero love for Fender basses, but I figgered "Why not? I'm watchin' Dave, not 'is patient". HNY Dave!
I'm with you Dave on hating those tube jack sockets. Any trouble with the contacts inside and you're stuffed. No access. Only choice is to replace. First came across them on an 80s Ibanez and I've hated them ever since.
Thanks, Dave! I just got a 2002 Squier P-Bass "Standard" that has the J bridge p'up, too. Needs a neck shim and strings big-time, though. Thanks for taking the time to teach us!
Hi Dave, happy New Year! I spent new years day resoldering a Fender Squire PJ. Everything was going well, till I accidentally clipped the hot wire on the P-Bass pickup a little short. So I spliced another wire to it and now that pickup doesn't work. So I think I got a bad connection on the splice. So I get to clip it and try again....hurray! But this is my first big bass solder job, and I think I'm doing pretty well. Most of what I know, I've learned from watching your videos, so thank you for all the tips and explanations!
That bridge looks like one of those "high mass" no name made-in-China jobbies ($15-20 I think). I got a couple and they look/feel solid, but I've read that they will actually bend inwards a bit over time (at the chunky right-angle part) - some batches are cast with softer metal. Something to keep in mind if you ever encounter a guitar that shows mysterious tuning/intonation issues over time. The string tension actually deforms the bridge. No problems with mine (yet).
Happy New Year, Dave! Here’s to a better 2021 … well, it couldn’t get much worse, could it? 😀 I think the reason that the Squier bass’s bridge was imperial and the rest was metric is that it looks like an aftermarket hi-mass bridge, replacing the usual skinny Fender/Squier “vintage” bridge. Looking forward to more fun stuff!

Good to see you unhacked , undaunted, and well in the new year. I replace all those round jacks with mojotone jacks that actually screw into the body of the guitar they never get loose or back out.
As soon as I saw the title and thumbnail I clicked the video quick sharp! Does this bass have a bendy neck and truss rod adjustment that won't hold...? I'm 2 minutes in and Dave is making comments about the truss rod! I wonder how this will pan out?! I've got three of these (lefty models) and two have necks that won't stay straight.
As always, Dave, your channel delivers the goods. I just picked up this exact bass (w. sunburst), set it up, but, I have a query. My bass is very neck heavy, and I would appreciate any suggestions to 'balance' it somewhat. Great to see your channel, is "Back in Black and Rockin' in the Free World"! Cheers and HNYD!!!, Mike from Fernwood, BC
purposely wired in reverse to stop the volume drop you get with both pickups full on with the normal Phase wiring on a P/J I'm guessing. Looks like they retrofitted a US modern "high mass" bridge that comes with the newer US P basses - that would be why its imperial not metric.
nice one Dave . Got any cds or plecks left just hear with my new bass first in over 20 years looks like tomorrow the trussrod gets a tweek action is a little high but neck looks straight, maybe a shim ? as bridge is on the deck Hmmmmm but first a sandwich
While there is indeed no use in getting all excited about a pretty guitar unless it works the way it’s supposed to, and if ya can’t be handsome then at least be handy, you can’t judge a book by its cover and beauty’s only skin deep, damn that’s a good lookin’ bass! And now it works too! Perfect!
Hey dave , hope u r well, i have a question im in a sabbath tribute band so obviously we,re in drop tuning , c sharp , so does the 5 64ths string height still apply, cos my bass players action seems a tad high to me your thoughts would be appreiciated ,..
I would never imagine that there's specific tools for jacks. Edit: 12:06 I knew I was not alone. In always protect things when I'm soldering, because I'm clumsy and sh*t always happens.
15:40 that to me sounds more like a transmission of the spiders from Mars than a J at the bridge, lol (I think some copper shielding would do some good too, but that's just my guess)
I wondered that as well so I went to Fender's website and checked to see if they make Squires that come with the high mass bridge. Turns out some Squire models do indeed. So it may very well be a metric/imperial mismatch straight out of the factory. Not the first time I have seen that. My Yamaha BB (also made in Indonesia) has the same mismatch; metric truss rod/imperial bridge saddle screws.
@@stoutlager6325 , I believe you, my knowledge of Squire basses is not that in depth. Guitars is more my thing, just I've been building a lot of basses for someone lately.
