This super high action also affects intonation. One may get it okay at the 12th fret, but at the 5th and 18th fret it'll be like sh!t. Have a happy, healthy and musical 2021. ✨
Over a half of an hour of a New Years treat of Dave fixing up a bass that has been g00ched. Nice. Hope you, and your family have a happy (and safe) New Year, Dave!
I love these videos. I'm trying to learn how to do basic set ups and every video of Dave's that I watch, I pick up another little nugget of knowledge. I think I'm more impressed with his handling of instruments than I am of musicians using the instruments.
Dave used a power tool Yipee!Rules and Guidelines:-"Hey boss,I fixed that bad wiring you told me to." "YOU SURE YOU GOT IT RIGHT?" "Yeah boss it's near enough." "NEAR ENOUGH AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH,GO BACK AND GET IT SPOT ON!!"OK boss, sorry." "Hey boss,I did it again and it's spot on." "WELL OK,THAT'LL BE NEAR ENOUGH."
Maybe it's a lap steel dobro slide bass. 😲 But seriously, every instrument I get to set up is a banana neck , drive thru action job.. Thanks to your teaching over many years I've been able to sort them all .. Thank you Dave , peace and Love brother. 👍🏻☮❤
I guarantee he'll like it I learned everything I learned from you Dave and I setup my own shorty bass and it plays like butta so doesn't all three of my stratocasters and my Les Paul junior all play like butter and I learned it all from you Dave thank you very much Happy New Year
New to bass after 30 years of guitar, finally learning this setup knowledge I should’ve learned way back, love your style Dave, no bullsh*t! Listened to an excellent interview with Gail Ann Dorsey, who describes her playing style as very light, and getting lighter - and at nearly age 60 she’s still one of the most kick-ass rock players ever, her hands have survived 40+ years as a session legend. “Digging in?” Nah, she just knows how to play...
That pre-adjustment string height looked like something you'd find on an upright bass. Holy crap that looked like it would be awful to play for any length of time.
Apparently James Jamerson's P-bass' action was unusually high, but if you're a legend, hey, do whatever you want. Jamerson stated it helped him transition from the upright to electric.
Dave, just wanted to let you know I'm trying to do my part; liking every new video, watching all the way until the end, (even suffering thru ads), and commenting on each :) Love your channel, please give us a heads up if you decide to jump ship!
The only person that could ever get away playing with a high action like that was probably James Jamerson. Only because he came from double bass and liked to dig in a bit.
But if you set up *correctly* to dig, that's fine. If your action is a ¼" on the the 17th fret and using a regular nut, you just have no idea what you're doing :)
Good explanation about the effects of string height being too high. Did not expect it to get into carpal tunnel or practicing bad habits. Words of wisdom right there not just a rant..
Nice way to end the year from hell I set my bass up as low as it will go without buzzing. Just a smidgeon of relief. Then I can get the dug-in sound without a lot of effort. Dave is right about future tendon and carpel problems. I got them from typing. Now I HAVE to play without a lot of effort. Cheers Dave, and thanks.
I've been in the studio when the bass player was playing the strings soo hard that the strings were hitting the pickup. didn't notice until playback. There was 2 hours worth of work down the tubes. had to adjust the bass and I redid the bass lines without him. Listen to what Dave's saying.
In th early-mid 90s I heard Tony Franklin at a bass clinic at the old Bass Centre in Hollywood. He told us that he loves high action on his fretless and plays it hard and loud. He had been playing with the Firm at that point.
I'm currently working on a Squier Classic Vibe 70s neck for my Squier Infinity bass body and your videos are the most helpful I've found so far. Keep up the good work, and be kind to others - especially US ;-) Cheers!
I love Dave but I'm a player with some weird setups and I make it all work because I set up all of my personal guitars. It's very easy to DIY because of people like Dave that has shared his knowledge and talent on RUclips. There's no rules, only guidelines. I've learned this from watching Dave. Thank you Dave🤗
Im a diesel mechanic and half assed musician. This video was excellent man. Thanks for sharing your knowlege and skill. Ive made this way more difficult than i had to in the past. Im going to go dig out a couple i gave up on and try this.
Dave for what it’s worth I’ve plugged your channel on some other channels. Hey you’ve saved me a lot of cash over the years. Thanks! I haven’t used my power tool in awhile. Somewhere south of Chit-cago
I love watching dave work. Lol. He would HATE my bass. Ibanez gio from the mid 80's. Using 184, 136, 102, 76. Tuned (from bottom) f#, b, e, a. I use my fingers, and a pick, depending on what the song I'm playing needs. I've learned how to set up watching his vids, I set it up his way. Thanks Dave!
drunk af rn. regardlessi love ypur videos, ive learned a lot and been inspired a ;lot so thank you i geniunily love your chasrisma you youre a great guy,, happy new year and i wsh you th best
I've been meeting customers in my garage for a quick play-through before handing off the instruments... Dual masks, plenty of hand sanitizer, etc. etc... It's weird, but its working... Just trying to keep guys playing their favorite instruments! Take care Dave.
I think someone is about to rediscover the joy of playing bass. A whole new dimension is about to open up...it probably all started with compensating for that backbow.
My first bass was an old Rogue P bass which had/has such a weak truss rod that I can't get the neck straight with 100-45's. Goodness am I thankful for my LTD.
American Deluxe Series. I remember the Bass Player article on these when they came out in the mid 90s. I don’t remember these coming from the factory with EMGs but I’ve been wrong before and I’ll be wrong again.
I'm digging in on all the knowledge I got from you the only thing I haven't done yet is got customers and made any money from it but I'm good at it and that's because of you I traded a PA speaker for squire bullet it's nice but it needed a nut so I got a blank and built a nut for it I built it like a pro and it plays beautiful and the nut looks like a pro did it set the neck set the action set the floating tremolo it plays like butta😎
I just loosen the truss rod a bit to get the height and sound. BTW James Jamerson (who also played upright)is quoted as saying, "You gots to fight the bass". Just sayin.. Happy Neu Yeer Dave. Thanks for the videos.
It's a 95, it's also an anniversary year bass, that's why it's got the sticker. At the 60th anniversary they had these silver badges on the back of the headstock.
@@Joe-mz6dc I understand the point of your comment, but this is just what they did starting in 95. I worked on a 95 American Telecaster with the same deal. Sticker on the back of the headstock, badge on the chainsaw case.
I have a friend who plays P basses strung with .55-.110 strings or something like that primarily. He also plays with fairly high action. He's a damn good player, too, but damn it's a lot of work to play his basses.
"I like my action high."
Translated
"I've never had a proper set-up."
"I prefer my string action to be similar to the suspension cables on the Golden Gate Bridge."
- Jazz Bass Owner, most definitely.
Because 'fuck intonation, I'm a JAZZ guy...'
I enjoy your "no nonsense" attitude towards repairs/set-up.
Give Dave some credit, there's *just enough* nonsense, a bit of honest gibberish, but very little actual blather and flapdoodle.
This super high action also affects intonation. One may get it okay at the 12th fret, but at the 5th and 18th fret it'll be like sh!t.
Have a happy, healthy and musical 2021. ✨
You tell 'em, Dave! And keep telling them. Here's to a much better 2021...
He must`ve had it set up to play slide
🤣
Sounds like my back in the morning... Omg

Thanks for making a last video for 2020. Next year will be whatever it will be.
I've been waiting for this episode. I have a 95 USA jazz. I love it so much. I'm glad you're back.
It's New Years Eve,... time to binge watch "Crusty Dave" videos. ;)
Dave... You are truly one in a billion...
Bass videos are my favorite because you can tell he mains the instrument
Happy New Year, Dave! May 2021 bring you many delicious sandwiches. \m/
Love your honesty Dave! You run a proper shop!

Dave you took the words out of my keyboard- that thing is gonna play like butter. No way the dude won't appreciate the way it plays now.
Glad to see you rolling again, David! Happy new year!

Prior to setup, that bass looked like it was fitted with ski-lift wires. Excellent video, Dave.
a lot of well-being and health to you and the whole family until the new year, maybe it won't be as much for shit as this year
Happy New Year🎉

Happy New Year, Dave. Fuck off, 2020.

Happy new year brother
Keep on keeping on mang.
Happy New Year Dave.
Happy new year dave. Keep doing what you are doing the way you do it...Thanx Mate
I think someone is about to rediscover the joy of playing bass. A whole new dimension is about to open up...it probably all started with compensating for that backbow.
It does my heart good to see a poorly cared for bass resurrected from the grave. Nice job Dave 🤘

Another great video!!!
High action beats up on the frets, too.
Have a Happy New Years day, be safe too Dave. Peace.
Great job on this Dave. Happy new year! Hey, I played a couple of Taylor's at Tom Lee music in Richmond yesterday. Phenomenal guitars! 😁

I’m here for crusty Dave.
Quick question Dave, can you raise my action? Bahahahahaha!! Merry New Year!!!!
I like Dave when he is crusty.
When is Dave not crusty?
I'm the first like?? Happy New year, Dave. Hope this one is better.
I just loosen the truss rod a bit to get the height and sound. BTW James Jamerson (who also played upright)is quoted as saying, "You gots to fight the bass". Just sayin..
Happy Neu Yeer Dave. Thanks for the videos.
Jokes on you, my headphones signal is compressed
The 50th anniversary sticker on the headstock was a big clue as to age. 1946 + 50= 1996
It's a 95, it's also an anniversary year bass, that's why it's got the sticker. At the 60th anniversary they had these silver badges on the back of the headstock.
They used 1996 necks on 1995 models?
@@Joe-mz6dc I understand the point of your comment, but this is just what they did starting in 95. I worked on a 95 American Telecaster with the same deal. Sticker on the back of the headstock, badge on the chainsaw case.
The Don Cherry of guitars and i loved Don Cherry . i am from michigan hockey along with kid rock is the best entertainment
If u like to dig in, add a little more relief, great tip dave!!
I have a friend who plays P basses strung with .55-.110 strings or something like that primarily. He also plays with fairly high action. He's a damn good player, too, but damn it's a lot of work to play his basses.
I am surprised you didn't check the intonation after all of those adjustments!
Ever hear of a John East Active Passive J Bass set up? I bought a Jazz Bass at a pawn shop and it has one on it.
It was a Carpaltunnelcaster 😆
Wait, did you clip the strings before you were finished?
Is there an App that you can use (via your phones camera) to check if you’ve matched the color correctly before applying it to the guitar???
