I don't know if it's the first time you've done that intro on the recorders Dave, but it's the first time I've heard it. Wonderful. Make that your go to!
Sometimes the right tool for the right job just doesn't work. But where there is a will there's a way. It's always gratifying to see you achieve success. Makes us repairman out in the world of gootch smile. We need more of that. ✌
I've had success in removing bushings by putting a short slug in the bottom, short enough to start a few turns of the post then using an old post or a bolt that threads in, screw the bolt in until the bushing gets pushed up.
One of my band mates who plays guitar owns a Ripper bass. He inherited it from his grandfather. I as the bass player get to play it often in place of my Getty Lee signature Jazz Bass. The 4 way switch only works in 1 and 4 position. The bass is noticeably heavy... a long night of jamming will wear your back out. But it is the deepest and “bassiest” bass I ever played. It has amazing tone. I put a set of cobalt flat wounds on it which are extremely playable and virtually friction free. It’s a quirky and odd bass... but one I enjoy playing very much.👍🥃
So many tone options. I had one of these for a little while back in the day (1977). Fiddled with it until I found a sound I liked and only touched the volume knob thereafter. Ended up in a pawn shop.
Hey Dave there is a website with data for all major string brands on actual ball to taper/silk for each stated scale length. I'm not sure if tube will let me post link but it'll be the first result in search if you enter 'fretnation bass string lengths by manufacturer'. They seem to update the list on occasion if they get corrections or new information as well. The data puts a fine point on the lack of standardization on this. For instance, 'long scale' varies by as much as 1.5" between brands!
I ingested some special chocolate, if you know what I mean, before watching this and the audio of the intro had me laughing out loud. Thanks for these videos !!! Awesome job as always !!! Have a great weekend buddy. Carry on young man !!!
I’ve never come across a bushing that my puller wouldn’t pull....I just use a claw hammer and a piece of plywood. Be careful....you can damage the top surface
Hey Dave just an FYI ... i just set up a Warwick 35" scale neck bass and DR (Pure Blues) standard Long scale bass strings are actually as long as most other brands "extra/super long scale" sets... the ball to taper length (38") is much longer than E Ball/Daddario/Elixir ling scale ... should be great on the Ripper?
That's good information, actually, I have a five string Rob Allen 35" scale string through body bass, and I've been using these LaBella Five String super longs that cost sixty three dollars shipped. I might look at the DR Blues as an alternative..
Yeah, DRs seem to be super long by default. How do you like the pure blues? I've grown quite fond of em. I swear they still sound the same as they did like 4-5 months ago when I put them on. Like they didn't have to break-in. Maybe a little zing has gone...idk
@@dickr9345 yeah so far so good ... they've got a bit more tension too than average which is nice for guys that detune ... a lot of my giys into heavier music/pick heavy right hand said its one of the few brands they dont break easily ...
good stuff. First concert, LZ Houses, Kezar Next, indoor, SF Civic, ELP BSS. Greg Lake playing a Ripper not only there but a GP cover story then. He was also good guitar player and singer.
Putting a Jazzcaster with parts from Warmoth and Solo. Roasted ash body and roasted maple neck. Neck doesn’t need finish. Beeswax on the body though. Fine wool to smooth out the Beeswax finish. Turned out real nice. Even I’m surprised. Admittedly that does not take much. 🤣🎸✌️🍻
After watching you work on Bass guitars for years I believe that I’ve come to the conclusion one is best off going with an American or Mexican made Fender. Thanks!
Provided the wood isn't too soft, you can drop a small screw into the bushing (head down) so it touches the wood through the hole at the bottom. Then screw the stud in. The stud hits the screw and pushes the bushing up out of the body. Unless of course someone decided to glue or epoxy it in there. Then you're pretty much stuck.
It’s not two volumes Dave. The knobs are: master volume, passive mid choke, master tone. The switch positions are: both in parallel, bridge only; both in series; both out-of-phase. Bill Lawrence designed unique pickups and an equally unique harness for the Ripper. There’s nothing else like it out there.
Dave, research how to do the "solo neck pickup" mod on these basses. MUCH more useful compared to the out of phase two pickup setting. It sounds like a good P-Bass.
Specifics escape me rn but it's basically removing a jumper wire on the 4-way rotary switch and moving the neck pickup positive wire. I've done it in the past for clients and they love it.
I had a Ripper Fretless in black with an ebony fingerboard. The neck was as big around as a telephone pole. It hurt my hand and forearms to play it and I'm a big/tall guy. My memory of the multi-position switch was that each setting sounded all muddy. I only owned it about 5 - 6 months and traded it and money for another fretless made of warmoth parts that I had custom built
I may have gooched my guitar. Was wondering if anyone could help me. This is kind of embarrassing(I’m willing to take any flack) but I recently got an Ibanez with an edge tremolo. I’ve only ever played hard tail guitars. So my dumb ass is tuning the b string to hell, with the locking nuts at the top still attached before I realize you have to take them off to tune .Felt very stupid, but can someone please tell me I didn’t screw up my guitar?
Dave you just butchered a rare fretted Tobacco Ripper, why not buying a set of original electronics off eBay (they're there all the time) instead of routing the body? Bah. Also it's preferable to use a tiny drop of oil to get the bridge studs off instead of forcing them.
I don't know if it's the first time you've done that intro on the recorders Dave, but it's the first time I've heard it. Wonderful. Make that your go to!
That's the first time you've heard "Shitty Flute"? Welcome to the internet.
He rotates the intro’s. But you do need to watch more Dave, it rotates in quite a lot.
I admire your patience, Dave. 👍
Thanks for a moment of sanity!
Hope everything is going well for you. Thanks for the diversion.
Grim Ripper bass... beer for pickups🍺 sounds like a good deal to me! Does he have some Fishman Fluence for my Schecter for a case or two? 😎

A switch plate screw dropped in head first also works.

Ripper and Grabber models are both neck and body maple which is heavier than most of the common tone woods
I hope you do a follow-up with the finished sound. I am not a Gibson bass fan but it isn't mine and I hope it is glorious!
There’s a site/store that specialises in the Gibson Varitone setup and sells all parts. If I find the link I’ll post back.
Always good to see the variety of 'toys' that you make better ...
Keep up the great work Dave 🙂
Flutes give a flashback to Bob & Doug MacKenzie
I think that was a recorder. Those things are damn fun to play. Everyone should have one. Or one of those little Irish flute things. The metal ones
That hole to the insert is conductive. I put a piece of brass in there and soldered the ground to it. :)
So many tone options. I had one of these for a little while back in the day (1977). Fiddled with it until I found a sound I liked and only touched the volume knob thereafter. Ended up in a pawn shop.
Love the recorder in the new intro music. Bravo!
I LOVE the old Ripper! 1 of the best sounding basses Gibson ever made!

I use a soldering iron down in the insert when they get stubborn like that. Hasn’t let me down yet.
I love these basses/ Grabber and ripper are the best Gibson ever made
THAT is the best intro of all
Most times I’m really chopped watching these and those intros make me forget what video I clicked on lmao

I have the same bushing puller. Someone may have glued in the bushing, I had to recently heat one up with a soldering iron in order to pull it out.

Dave said he pooped a little...as I was eating milk duds. Thank's Dave...LMAO
The reason you had a problem with the bridge studs is because they are threaded bushings....they screw in, not pressed in.
After watching you work on Bass guitars for years I believe that I’ve come to the conclusion one is best off going with an American or Mexican made Fender. Thanks!
Don't overlook Japan. And sometimes South Korea.
"things are turning, but nothing is moving". It really sucks when this happens. Whatever you're doing.

Epic work on this one by all concerned.
Cool looking bass.
I only watched it to see what the bridge looked like, and how it attached.
Intro is FIIIRE!!!!
Best intro ever, Dave!
All this heartache for a Gibson bass. That sucker better truly rip, I can't wait to hear its tone to see if it's worth it.

yeah what a mess and why routing the body instead of buying original electronics...
Looks pretty snazzy with the red tortoise shell pick guard I must say.
Where did you find that electronics package? My internet search keep taking me to Talkbass and Gibson.
I'm in Michigan if you guys need anything from the states man matt is your man

I love "The Pickup-Tapping Tune". I think David Reaume should release it as a single on iTunes.
I would have also replaced the "mother of bacon" pickguard. That is horrendous!
I normally like tortoise pickguards, but that one looks funky on there.

Is it me or is the finger rest in like the worst spot?
Greta job. FYI I pull my knob all the time, it's great.
