I dont get some people who laugh at Elvis and write him off as a joke. Sure some of his fashions were over the top especially Vegas onwards but thats just fashion its not important - you measure a person by his/her achievements not what they wore...& with Elvis a dirt poor kid from a dirt poor family from Nowheres-Ville you have someone who arguably had more impact on the 20th century than anyone else and whose massive influence is still on us in so many ways....you may think you hate elvis you may think you are cool laughing at elvis but your life and so much around you every day right now is the result of Elvis Presley one way or another...so you too whether you know it or not have been influenced directly or indirectly by the life of that dirt poor kid named elvis - and he did all that not by having connections or starting a war - he did all that by sheer talent by sheer charisma and by sheer breath taking originality. As john lennon said "before elvis there was nothing". Unlike Micheal Jackson who had to promote himself as the King of Pop and pay people to promote that name...Elvis did not have to have to promote himself as the King or hire a PR agency to promote him as the King and buy himself that title - & nobody had to even say he was the King - everyone "just" knew he was and was without question the King , it was simply an acknowleged fact that everyone knew like they knew the sky was blue and the oceans were filled with water.. By just leading his life and being who he was & creating the original music of rock n roll Elvis was the best weapon democracy has ever had against fascism, communism, and totalitarianism. No kid in any communist or fascist country could ever believe in that type of politics after hearing an elvis presley album just once. They were forever changed and forever on the side of freedom. What Elvis achieved in his lifetime and how his originality changed the world has filled many books.And all those books just are scraping the tip of the iceberg of his influence on our lives.How one dirt poor kid did all that is something that mere mortals like you and I cannot even get our minds around it is so immense. All Hail the King!

I think it's pretty great that he never lost touches with his roots. Lets face it those movie soundtracks and bubble gum pop stuff RCA had him do wasn't all hit makers. And I'm sure it frustrated the hell out of Elvis...so when asked, what do you wanna play? He goes straight for the Blues. Somewhere on RUclips there's a video of Robert Plant talking about the time Led Zepplin meet Elvis in his suite in Vegas and they got to talking music... Who there influences where.. Robert started name dropping blues guys like Jimmie Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson..Lowell Fulson. And so on and Elvis was familiar with every artist and name dropped a few of his own. Robert said you could tell he knew his stuff.. Never lost his love for the blues.
