Controller did a great job of declaring an emergency for the pilot, something the pilot was clearly reluctant todo. Note how, once he declared, the controller did everything he could to get him on the ground safely.
yeah the controllers did a great job I thought
Perhaps is a cultural difference.
I wouldnt have done an overhead break pattern if I was truly emergency fuel.
Not at all. Many pilots (including students) refuse to declare emergencies even if the situation is dire because of possible punishments, costs, fear and paperwork.@@Boodieman72
Landed a Cessna 150 at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station once after declaring and emergency and Squawking 7700 after a mag failure. Not once was their any resistance or refusal from ATC or the military. The issue here was an initial failure to declare an emergency.
Military won't turn you away if you declare an emergency (with caveats). The issue here I believe is more cultural than anything else. In Asia the idea of admitting to any perceived failure is the worst. Even though it's gotten better over the years, it still pervades the culture. I'm sure that they drum that out of the commercial pilots, but I don't know how much it's emphasized with GA.
@@ryoukosan11 well id imagine they go through the hazardus attitudes but I didn't know that they tend to have that in their culture.
Yep. When you declare an emergency, it opens a lot of doors, and people will bend over backwards to help you.
Once an emergency is declared all airports are available to land. I did that once in the mid 197o's at Louisville military base after they gave me a PAR approach. Very nasty weather. Very strict and stern instructions once on the ground. The fuel was verified as critically low, they fuelled the aircraft. Still remember the warning, do not step out of the yellow lines or leave this office. My men are authorized to use lethal force and if you disobey these orders you will be shot. Don't know what was scarier the fuel emergency in un-forecast shit weather, or the officers warning. Still they treated us very well and without a doubt saved my ass. Thanks guys.
you could tell the controller is like, just say emergency and we can land you anywhere
Once you declare an emergency up there, you can fly at any speed, any altitude, fly through any airspace.
You basically own the sky at that point, and any runway is yours for landing, be it military or civilian.
A lot of paperwork after though. If flying commercial prepare a lengthy report to your chief pilot..
Try that at Area 51
Not in many other countries
@@Chat562 Even Area 51 is fair game in an emergency... However if you look at an airway map with airports you will quickly realize that the odds for Area 51 airbase being your best bet for a safe landing is very slim.
It can happen, but you are better punching and winning the lottery 10 times in a row before you get an event that will make Area 51 your best spot for landing.
And yes, any airspace in any country that follows ICAO rules, of course currently, Russia is a bit up for debate here though, especially with their latest actions.
As for paperwork, most likely none, unless you were acting in bad faith obviously, and this is set up this way deliberately to avoid having pilots not declare a mayday and have issues where they crash and get killed rather than declaring an emergency and landing on the military airfield.
Now in a commercial setting, there will be a lot of additional extra work and logistics due to aircraft size, fuel, passengers, cargo, repairs, certification, accomodation, transport etc.
Usually though, that is not the responsibility of the pilot, you just get that bird down and let the airline sort the rest of the mess out, and then talk to the investigators afterwards.
@@Chat562 Just tell them your tail number is NCC1701-A
I used to fly out of Osan AB's Aero Club. The club shut down a while back though. They had mogas at the time which is almost straight motor vehicle fuel. I doubt either they or Desiderio still have that fuel. Maybe he borrowed some regular car gas to get home.
I flew out of Osan AB Aero Club in 2005-2006. CFI was a crazy F-15E driver. Can't remember his name though.
@@ryoukosan11 My first trip there was 04-05. I flew with a former F-111 driver for a while in the club. I forget his name though.
Nice job on the subtitles and audio.
Thank you,sir!
The controller hides his Korean accent extraordinarily well.
I believe he is a USFK Personnel. Osan is USAF base and Pyeongtaek is US army base.
The controller is a USAF airman. Osan is a USAF military base.
How is that for a post war commie conspiracy to infect our precious bodily fluids?
@@ryoukosan11 You are obviously not very bright!!!
@@ryoukosan11 whooooooooosh
Well he isn't getting 100LL at a military field unless they have an aero club with small planes.
I was a member of the Osan Club when I was stationed in ROK. They have 100LL available.
@@ryoukosan11 At the base I hang out at the aero club is the only place LL100 is available but many bases don't have aero clubs. Generally they won't sell to other planes but in an emergency situation, especially to get the plane off the base, they probably would.
I want rest of the story:)
same here!
What I recall from reading a comment on another video of this
He landed on the runway, there was some discussion about what had happened but I don't have the details
After that i believe (again going off memory) they fueled up the plane and then had to push the plane back into a position where it could take off again
After that they departed, not sure of there was follow up or not
Hope this helps!!
Happened way back in March 2019
yes sir...as mentioned in the very beginning of the video
Terrible radio work and flight planning by 1004.🤨
What can you expect? They're in their own country speaking to foreign military controllers.
@@PikalaxALT radio phraseology is the same throughout the world and so is flight planning.🤷🏻
@@wallabybob3020No, its not. Especially American controllers are know for horrible phraseology.
@@EmotionalWeather I’m sorry, but it is. Every pilot knows to repeat his call sign in every call so the controller knows exactly who he’s talking to. This guy didn’t even know to get PPR into a military base!
@@wallabybob3020 Check who I replied to.
I can imagine the welcoming committee.
Haha yeah
Placed at the end of the runway and runway shutdown.
I bet he got more that he was bargaining for.
If I was low on fuel, I would not be asking for a specific field but instead asking for the nearest field with the required length. I would not be doing low passes over the field (and probably taking pictures) but instead would be landing immediately. Looked more like military reconnaissance flight from a civilian aircraft rather than an emergency.
You dont think they searched his butthole once he landed?
Yeah, he is a North Korean spy. They should check his fuel level to verify he was actually low. Either way, he was likely detained by the Army's military police. Had he landed at Osan the Air Force Security Forces would have face planted him, lol. AF SecFo don't mess around due to the aircraft assets.
If you aren't routinely aware of your next available site for an emergency landing, suggest you go back to the second week of flight school. The pilot should absolutely know what's coming up.
Given he already knows where a safe landing site is, it would be foolish to ask ATC to waste time figuring that out. The limited time available needs to be spent getting cleared to land and making the flight to that runway, while getting other traffic clear.
First thought in my mind when he asked to do a fly over. Recon
The circling was for height.
You can bet they were going over that aircraft with close scrutiny afterwards.
private Cessna was clearing the rwy.....and twr chases his own jets away anyway..........; was that a real need to do so ?
This happened quite a long while ago didn't it?
yes sir..as mentioned in the very beginning of the video...
What a total cluster fxxx. Low approach with minutes of fuel left??? Are you kidding?? I would land no matter what!
apparently he was too high to land on finals
@@Flight_Follower One time I was soo high I never made it to my finals. 😁
This doesn’t make sense. Why a military airfield? A military airfield probably won’t have 100LL. A civilian airport would be much better suited to meet his needs.
Look at a map of South Korea and look for airports in that area. There's next to nothing. Super sparse.
Not many civ airports in the area. And Osan operates an Aero Club. Many of the airfields do have 100LL on hand.
Better to be safely on the ground trying to find gas that crashed and dead after running out of gas. Certainly poor planning on the pilot's part but once the condition was established the safe outcome of the flight was highly dependent on having a place to land within the range of distance the remaining fuel permitted.
As far as I know, near airfields of that Cessna's position are at Cheongju, and west end of Seosan(you can find them on the map of video). thinking of its heading, Pyeongtaek was its best option.
HAving never been there, you've constructed a story out of loose bits of watery shit, and then pasted your mess into the comments section.
U s controllers in Korea?
US military bases
Would love to know how he was punished for doing this. Suspect the Koreans aren’t as forgiving for screwing up and having to land at a military base. Unless he had a major leak in flight, piss poor planning.
What's wrong with military bases? They have runways for aircraft, don't they? So what's the problem of using them? 🤷🏻♂️
@@DrzewieckiDesign Nothing if you get the PPR
Punished ? So severely the next pilot would rather get himself killed instead of diverting ?
@@101jtag Exactly. Unless this is North Korea ;)
