"Belly savalas" - you kids wouldnt remember Telly Savalas, who was the star of the long running cop tv series, "Kojak". Detective Lieutenant Kojak was always sucking a lollipop and when he would take it out of his mouth he'd always say "who loves ya baby?". Bernard sticks the lollipop in his belly button and does the lollipop line when it comes out.
And cabumbo was a reference to Colombo
@@AduderReviews And also...
The joke about Manny's birthday presents being an espresso machine and a "The Sweeney"boxset:
The Sweeney was a 70s cop show. Manny had binged it whilst drinking espresso all night so he was acting like a 70's detective, even down to the tan leather jacket!
Carter was one of the main characters played by Dennis Waterman.
Yeah sad dem two actors in the show are now brown bread 😢
In the German dubbing, this British crime series, which is unknown here, was replaced with the staid, slow-moving German series "Derrick". Completely inappropriate.
Nice catch on the Police officer being in 2 Nolan Batmans, I never noticed before. You are actually really great at spotting people from shows and movies. haha
I knew him from "The Fast Show" but seems he is a regular voice actor for "Fireman Sam" and "Thomas the Tank Engine" too which I was not aware of.
@@Lones555and Dennis the Menace
"Fell off the chair to some extent" was a mainstay quote in my friend group back in the day :D
The Sweeney was a fast-moving and extremely popular British cop show set in London which first aired in the mid to late 70s. The title came from Cockney rhyming slang: Sweeney Todd, Flying Squad. When Bill Bailey introduces himself as 'Carter' he's referencing the character played by Dennis Waterman.
On this being like Father Ted, it just occurred to me that Bernard Black is essentially Father Jack but still a semi-functional alcoholic who can talk and walk rather than just sleeping and occasionally waking up and yelling 'drink! Girrls! feck!'. This is probably what Jack was like leading up to getting exiled on Craggy Island.
I had that realization too watching this, it would have been interesting to have a series about young father Jack.
Belly Savalas = Telly Savalas - the bloke who played Kojak - NYC cop. Show from the 70's. Famous for always sucking a lollipop.
The wife of Bernard's friend also played Toni in Peep Show
My favourite episode is the one with the Piano. It's absolutely ridiculous but so funny too. Bill Bailey is fantastic in it.
Belly Savalas = Telly Savalas = Kojak. The lollypop sucking US cop show from the 70s.
If you like Telly Savalas you really have to watch "Kelly's Heroes".
And the lolly pop was in the belly button. Combumbo, on the other hand, is Columbo, and guess where the cigar was?
That's Toni from Peep Show at the dinner party
Shame the Cobumbo joke didn't land for you. Was anticipating a big laugh there.
I don't think they understood any of the references of that section.
after the lollipop 'sounding' expectation, the miss on the cigar was funny in itself
So if 'Belly Savalas' is an impression of Telly savalas using his belly button, it follows that 'CoBUMbo' is an impression of the detective Columbo, with the cigar being held somewhere else 😁
"You're my hero" So sweet and just how I feel about my wife too
!That's just what 'Steve' would say
Having a hard time in life is made much easier by laughing along with you! Watching you laugh at bizarre British humour makes me laugh out loud!
Carry on, please 😂
Love catching a glimpse of Princess Boomer playing with her toy. Reminds me of mine at that age 50 years ago. I made their crib mobiles.
Yeah, both commissioners and batman were British.
Edit: And Ra's Al Ghul, Bane, and several others (though not Scarecrow).
I think a lot of the Dark Knight Trilogy was filmed in the UK, so I imagine that's probably why a few British actors popped up in some of the smaller roles.
Scarecrow was Irish so close enough.
@@Turalcar No, Cillian Murphy corrected an interviewer who called him British, he's Irish and not British.
good batman spot! I remember that guy from the fast show etc in the 90s, so I was blown away when he appeared in a damn hollywood blockbuster!
The sweeney was a 70’s cop show. Not only is manny dressed like a character but is talking like them
Good spot with Colin Mcfarlane as the policeman, but you missed that Sarah (Gerald's wife) is Elizabeth Marmur aka Toni from Peep Show!
Your Daughter is hilarious! She's having a riot! 😂
Aww Princess Boomer is so cute! It's lovely hearing her rustling around and playing in the background ☺💛
Also, I think you just missed out on a fun joke when Bernard is introduced to Jimbo (the son) - "Ah, you remember Jimbo, don't you?" - "I'm not sure. What do you do?" - "Well, he's our son..." - "OH! Thank God! Haha! I thought you had a disease... ah, this is a child!"
Top baby action sequence at the end there! Accompanied by similar baby next door noises over here! WOOoooiiiiooowaaaawoooiiii!!!!!!
We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had our dinner!
20:20 and "two pints of lager and a packet of crisps" series 6 episodes 4&5
The cop that also was in the Batman films was in the 'B cast' of The Fast Show ... which you must have heard of by now,
I love that your daughter is in on Black Books. She just needs Garth Merenghi next and she'll be set for life!
Brian your ability to spot and recognise actors from other things is like a superpower.
King Boomer is right. Bill Bailey does look like Daniel Arias from Embrace The Suck.
Gillian Anderson. X Files - Scully. Born in London.
In the uk we take SATS twice…one in year 6 end of junior school so at 10 years of age…..then in year 9 before GCSEs and exams at the summer every year.
"That's all I can say about it... ".. Ah, so it was the police. ;-)
"Get the shooters George"
"Roight guv"
So, funny story, when I was training for a job we had to watch some security training videos, scenarios acted out etc. The main actor and narrator was the same guy from the Batman films, and even though this was in the UK and all the characters in the video we English, this guy still spoke with his banging American accent, no idea why lol
Complete set of the Sweeny and an espresso machine 😅
I loved The Sweeny 😊
I had to check out that actor who played the policeman, cos I thought you must be mistaken, but you were right. His name is Colin McFarlane and he was in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Don't forget that Gary Oldman, who played Gordon in those movies, is also British.
And Gary oldman’s sister is in eastenders 😀 (and currently having a thing with bricktop from snatch! Who is also in eastenders atm)
I thought every American dad breast fed? Is that not how spray cheese was invented? 😁
As someone who doesn't know how to speak to children I'm glad others can find amusement in my ineptitude. A woman once showed me her baby and I gave it a Karl Plilkington style "Alright" followed by a casual salute. The woman looked very confused and then politely said "Well, nice to meet you".
I was wondering/waiting to see if you would spot the police commissioner from the dark knight!! Great job
You should absolutely watched Spaced of you get a slot in your schedule
5:11 Can you imagine how hung over you have to be to react like that at the first instance of consciousness
Yes I can
I have been there before, had my fair share of Disco Elysium super cop benders before. The ancient reptilian brain moments of consciousness are bad times indeed.
TELLY SAVALAS WAS ACTOR, IN "DIRTY DOZEN" AND TV SERIES, WHERE HE ATE LOLLIPOPS AS HE WAS QUITTING SMOKING.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Robbery is with a weapon, theft without.
@RandomShart Sorry, agreed yes. Force or threat not necc weapon. Poor Callie. I hope they charged him.
Thank you so much King. You really get this comedy.
Love this episode - Manny is the worst good cop😂😂😂
For some unknown reason Kojak (starring Telly Savalas) was insanely popular for a while in the UK.
24:27 Boomer doesn't know Kojak? You must know Columbo
Will have to change his name to King Gen Z.
@@amcgowan1970 Kojak has fallen into obscurity over the decades so I can understand that but I really thought columbo was timeless.
29:40 Pay attention to the Missing Persons pictures in the background, it's actually foreshadowing a later episode!
14:05 I love this show, but Only Fools and Horses did that gag so much better, with Rodney chasing down some muggers 😁
I love it that you guys are in complete sync with Black Books, your own dialogue mirrors the show, even the completely random stuff like when King Boomer fondles his own boob and kind of wishes he could breast feed.
Best yet!
Glad you're enjoying Black Books!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My favorite episode is "THE LOCKOUT" HILARIOUS😄😅😃😆😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fun thought: Maybe they wrote him as a young Father Jack... 😉
Coupling
Mischief Theater
Absolutely, Coupling. Not really random, but Boomer sure will love Jeff. The wife of Bernard´s friend in this Black Books episode played Jill, the vegetarian therapist of Jane in Coupling.
"Is THIS yours?" :)
ENJOY HER AS BABY...IT FLIES BY!!!❤❤❤❤
Black books is hilarious great actors great script...
Told you last episode you needed to have a basic grip of 'The Sweeney' to appreciate the genius of this episode. By far my favourite.
After this maybe you should try Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a 90s comedy show). Would be fascinating to see how shocked you would be.
Black books is hilariously funny :)
You need to check out upstart crow
Sweet, another Black Books reaction.
Looking at you 2, it's a bit looking into the "life of Brian"😂
Love this show, there's not many UK shows I love but Black Books Is absolutely hilarious as you've found out.
If you love this then give Spaced a go if you haven't already, same nuts humour.
"That might work - 'Don't flirt with me!!'" made me think of Jason Spencer on Who Is America... If you haven't reacted to that you *definitely* should...
I think British actor David Harewood does a pretty good American accent, Opinion? He plays David Estes in Homeland and The Martian Hunter in Supergirl and also the crossovers.
Also if you are a gamer he played Staff Sgt in COD Infinite Warfare. (his sorta likeness too)
Green wings mannerisms will have boomer flying off his chair
20:19 wow what a great spot.
Callie is a welcome sight, nice to see these two as a pair ✌️❤️🇬🇧
hmmm "The curtains flappin'"
Belly Savalas after Telly Savalas the actor who played Kojak.
Also played Blofeld in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."
Well done for recognising Colin McFarlane. If you get into the Fast Show, you will see him again.
Ask anyone who plays cricket if they have heard the story of someone who got something stuck somewhere.....
Ball + box = 🥴
I have been watching these British sitcoms for years now and it seems that they use about the same one hundred actors.
Brilliant episode one of my favourites
Fun fact: Princess boomer wasn't actually playing with the toy, she was using it to cheer for Black Books. She is truly a child of culture
I can’t sit on myself because luckily they are incredibly small.
Just got fired today so this is great timing to get my mind off it for a bit 💯 Cheers
Sorry to hear that. Dont worry. I got fired 8 years ago after a disagreement with my partners. Started my own business. Never looked back. All the best to you.
@@tileux Cheers buddy. Good to hear :)
@TCO-Peace-harmony-man Thanks man. I used to work in office jobs. This was my first warehouse job and I loved it. Was the best colleagues so I was looking forward to coming to work almost every day. I'm not too worried about finding another job but it sucks because I liked it there so much
you’re now free to do anything
You should have been better at your job then 😂
Good spot with Colin McFarlane!!!
Hi king and queen hope you're keeping well and greetings from Vinnie and Val from Dublin city Ireland
I use to love this show all time classic have you watched 2 pints of lager and a packet of chrisps
Please review - Garth marenghi's darkplace! You will love it. It's got cast from IT CROWD in it.
The Sweeney is a classic UK cop show
Dude- you might like Green Wing too. Slightly less family friendly, at least with some of the topics, but plenty of familiar actors. Tamsin Grieg a main character. I guess you’d describe it as quirky. Oh, also features a pre-Oscar Olivia Colman in a not Oscar winning role.
Also you’ve watched Spaced? Kind of the first Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg/Nick Frost venture…
I love black books its so good xD
I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU MEN WALK AROUND EVERY DAY WITH THOSE THINGS!!!!?????😂😆😂
Thanks
Have you checked out Coupling. Absolutely funny show. So well written. I think youll like it.
My dad had boobs but luckily I was never breast fed by them, that would be a traumatic experience if ever there was one
Baby Boomer is delightful.
You missed that Toni from Peepshow was on this episode, the wife.
Shame you guys dont get half the references...even the American ones like, "Belly Savalas" (Kojak) and "Cobumbo" (Colombo). Some say British comedy is wasted on Americans...Not me!...but some
Belly Savarlus as in Loyal Telly Savarlus. Ignore the spelling.
AWWWW, PRINCESS BOOMER❤❤❤❤❤
Regarding the english actress with the bad british accent a possible other explanation than the commentator just being wrong is that it does happen that you get some London based actors and singers who naturally have posh accents but who fake more working class or ambiguous London accents and some are more successful at that than others
Nice one boomsters, hope you're good....please react to green wing soon 🤞
Take care ✌
Every time they mention how random a joke is, I always think 'wait until you see Green Wing'.
That show had me crying with laughter. A lot. I really hope they get to it eventually.
Are you guys to young for the reference to Telly Savalas as "Kojak"? He always had a lolly pop in his mouth 🙂
Brilliant performance by Princess Boomer. More entertaining than Black Books. So cute!
A hero is a guy... Heroine is female
I love yoos its like you are brits born living in the US. ❤❤
