Flannel is a type of cloth, like linen, which is why you have flannel clothes. We have flannelette pyjamas and sheet sets which are thickish material that keeps you warmer and generally older people use them in winter.
A flannel is a square of cloth maybe half again the size of someones hand with sewn edges usually used in the bathroom, I guess small hand-towel would be the equivalent. I assume they were made of actual flannel at some stage in history.
To British/Australians rag implies a piece waste cloth you might use to mop up some mess then throw away.
Dylan was addressing Bill as characters with beards and long hair, Gandalf, Genghis (Khan), and Ming The Merciless who is a Flash Gordon villain.

Most people dont know this, because Absinthe has an odd history and its not sold or drunk everywhere, but Absinthe is one of the most potent alcoholic drinks you can get. It makes pretty much every other spirit drink look like lemonade in comparison. So, Manny hunkering down with a bottle was bound to be a disaster.
A flannel is a small hand towel which you use for washing your hands or face. Its usually about the size of a handkerchief but its made of.. flannel.

There are many, many videos on YT of people trying absinthe for the first time and just absolutely losing their minds. 75-80% ABV, or 160-180 proof for our American cousins. Supposedly the French impressionists and the Lost Generation living in Paris used to go mad on the stuff. It was banned in the UK/Ireland for a bit, mostly due to some bad press. You drink a very small amount, with water and a sugar cube.

    • @lloydevans2900
      @lloydevans2900 4 месяца назад +3

It is certainly true that not many spirits have a greater alcohol content than Absinthe: The most well-known one is of course "Everclear" at 95%, but this doesn't necessarily count because it is almost always used as a component of other drinks, not drunk on its own. One of the only spirits which is a genuine drink and has a higher alcohol content is an Austrian dark rum product called "Stroh", which is 90% alcohol.
One of the strongest I have personally encountered was a "special reserve" version of Chivas Scotch whiskey, which was 70% alcohol, identical to the alcohol content of the Absinthe shown in this episode of Black Books. Which was probably the strongest whiskey of any type, including Scotch, Irish and American "bourbon". The next strongest contender that I know of is one of the varieties of "Knob Creek" brand bourbon at 60%. Though there may be others which are stronger - does anyone know of any examples?

The little man in his hair is a "Subbuteo" playing piece. A game where the players flick their team pieces against a ball. A net each end of a printed baize football field for the goals.

They said just "civil war". Who knows if it is US civil war, most countries has had em. Which makes the answer to the question "civil war general or communist dictator" to be "yes".... if we are talking about Russian civil war.

The first show I saw Tamzin Greig and Mark Heap (Jim from Friday Night Dinner) in was Green Wing, which is a comedy set in a hospital.
It's a show which I think isn't very well known and is kinda lost to history.
It's full of strange but funny characters with many funny moments.
It's definitely worth looking for, and I think you might really enjoy it.

Joe Pasquale (the Mickey Mouse voice) is an old school hack comedian with an infamously grating voice.
He mostly does Panto now, as far as I know.
It's not actually a cameo from him, as far as I can tell, but an impersonation.

Peter Serafinowicz (pronounced serra-FIN-a-wits). And a flannel is what you probably call a wash cloth. The shipping forecast is a nightly weather and tide forecast for ships - it's simply a list of sea regions and numbers and is surprisingly relaxing. If you like Tamsin Greig, you should also watch the bizarre hospital comedy, Green Wing.

Also speaking of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, you really need to watch "Spaced" After you finish up with Black Books, if you want weird and funny, that has to be the weirdest and funniest of them all.

A flannel can mean a few different things contemporaneously. A flannel is a flannel washcloth or face washer. We tend to call a flannel shirt just that, a flannel shirt. Interestingly in my parents generation a “flannel” Was specifically a type of coarse undershirt.
