I'm slightly annoyed with myself for never noticing before that Manny's surname is Bianco. So Bernard and Manny are named Black and White respectively.
OMG! I’ve loved this show for years and hadn’t noticed “Black and White”. Thanks for clueing me into this. 😊
but manny's parents mentioned it!
Good spot. 🔍
Bernard Black is so relatable in so many ways.
If your an irritable drunk🤗
He's so awkward that's why he's relatable
@@frozengamer3030 Nah, Mark was right lol
Yes.
Cheers😜was joking though.sort of😁dylan Moran live while he's drinking makes him so much funnier.don't know how much he drank during t.v.recording.Jim Jeffries is another that gets funnier & more outrageous, mainly because he speaks the truth.& Sadly, maybe, real life is at times too unbelievable😫🤒
Bilingual bonus: Nick the accountants surname, "Voleur" is French for "thief". I knew that duolingo course would come in useful.
Plus Nick : "may also refer to a prison or a police station, but at the same time it may also mean to steal."
Second Bilingual Bonus: If you can read Katakana it says "lighter" on the boxes with the lighter Fran is fussing over
Back Books is a Dylan Moran show, and he brought in Graham Linehan. He actually had a lot of things done, but had no idea how to write scripts and put together a TV show on paper. Graham Linehan came in and initially helped with that, then carried on as a partner writer for the show.
The one and only time I've ever physically pissed myself laughing is in the episode where they're making wine.
Bill Bailey's Surprise Hair!
That's all I'm gonna say 🤣🤣
my favourite episode by far
Ahh yes but the older it the better it also
@@mitchchandler2336It's like looking into the eyes of a duck and sucking all the fluid from its beak 🥴
This wine needs an Oaky taste.. an oaky taste.. TO THE GARDEN!!
That episode is to Black Books what 'The Work Outing' is to The IT Crowd.
Simon Pegg's character is worth the wait! You will love this show.
He's awesome. My personal favourite guest is Peter Serafinowicz. I'm with Fran about his voice.
@@Missy-24 I can still hear it now; "Frraaaann?!"
@@Kyutu07 🥰
Evan the disturbed proprietor of Goliath Books and his "Stepford" style staff...
Tasmin is in Green wing, also surreal.
As is mark heap, get it reacted to guys!
@@pts1971 I don't know, I can see them going into a Death Spiral of "Why?!" for every episode xD
@@pts1971Mark Heap also appears with Dylan in a series called "How Do You Want Me?" featuring the gorgeous & much missed Charlotte Coleman (Scarlet in Four Weddings & a Funeral) & Emma Chambers (Notting Hill).
Dylan shows up in Notting Hill, ironically as a book thief..
Bill Bailey was in Hot Fuzz as a policeman
Nobody tells me nothin'
Two policemen.
Dylan Moran is David aka Daffs in Shaun of the Dead
King Boomer does mention that to
The whole thing about Graham Linehan always having an Irishman in his shows....it was his intention NOT to have an Irishman in The IT Crowd, but when Chris O'Dowd auditioned for the role of Roy, he was so perfect for it that Graham felt he would be guilty of discrimination if he DIDN'T give him the part.
I was told that Bernard was based on a real comic book shop owner in Edinburgh. I had to go see for myself, wasn't disappointed.
Dead Head comics? The reviews and owner responses are spot on. ETA the reviews for Dead Head are spot on Black Books.
@@JennaPitcherTHX1138 Don't know why people like you feel the need to make up tall tales for the likes, but lets be honest - you didn't go to a specific shop in Edinburgh just to find this out...

Yes I did.
*Laughter* I'M REALLY ANGRY NOW!!

King boomer, please please please react to Garth Merenghi’s Dark Place, great surreal one off mini series with Matt Berry (Douglas Reynholm) and Richard Ayoade (Maurice Moss) amongst others- an underrated comedic gem which I think would be right up your alley!
Definitely, one to do with QB
King Boomer has an uncanny ability to not be able to identify accents. yet is brilliant at recognising faces impressive stuff .
There's 0 American in any of the accents and yet he finds it. Maybe he thinks all Brits have to have a really distinctive accent?
Remember that to most Americans, we have only Cockney or very posh accents.
And they only have about three accents: General American, New York (Eastern US), and Southern US. So they don't have the ear for different accents like we have in the UK, where if you go ten miles down the road it's like entering a different country.
@@TheSimCaptainthat's all understandable but the bloke in this who KB thought was American just had a really standard posh accent that you hear all over any kind of British TV.
@brendanm6921 You're saying the same thing that I am. I'm just saying WHY he thought it was an American accent. English accents in the central region of England can sound similar to American but without the rhotic "R" sound. If a short sentence is spoken without those words that have that sound, an American could think it is an American accent.
In this episode of Black Books, the "evangelists" spoke short sentences. What also threw Boomer was the fact that one of them said "Jeeesus" like they do in America.
@@TheSimCaptain LOL, no. That _is_ basically the only accents you'll hear in movies, though. We have dozens; just not a different accent for nearly every town/two per county minimum, like the UK does. It's sort of making the same assumption about American accents (which mostly comes from media exposure) as Americans do about UK accents. 😅
If you "have an ear" for American accents then you'd be able to tell the difference between Texas, Louisiana, and the Carolinas, rather than just "Southern". Or New England, New York, and the Phillie/South Jersey accents. "General American" is apparently originally associated with Ohio, and newsreaders and actors were often coached in it because it sounds the most neutral, and over time it just got spread by media exposure. I don't have my region's accent in part because of it.
Black Books gets better & better. 'Green Wing' has to be your next uk series to watch...set in a hospital..dysfunctional, dystopian & hilarious. Another Tamsyn series❤.
Green Wing is brilliant, off the wall fabulousa 👌
Also another great "Mark Heap" charecter👍
Darkplace is also set in a hospital though… only 6 episodes
@@jessiechen279 The Best! In my view, he should have got a BAFTA for it. Up there with Sellars for physical comedy.
wow. this is such a subtly deep show. you guys gona love this one. Bill Bailey is Epic in this.
YES! FINALLY BLACK BOOKS! So happy you've picked this 😊
I saw Bill Bailey live in Nottingham, UK in May 2019, during his 'Larks In Transit' tour. Every inch as brilliantly funny as I thought he would be. An incredible range of topics in his act from his love of wildlife to politics and weirdly far-out, surreal observations on life. This is laced with comedic musical genius, such as performing Deep Purple's 'Smoke On The Water' on finely-tuned cowbells. The range of musical instruments he can play is mind-blowing. He does a fantastic routine about Stephen Hawking's 'Brief History Of Time' from his 'Bewilderness' tour!
One of the best evening's-worth of entertainment I've ever been to!
Black Books is such a brilliantly written comedy, one of my favourites ever…❤❤❤
One of my all-time favourite series. Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, and Tamsin Greig - three great comedians/comic actors. Keep an eye out for guest appearances by other well-known British comedians in several of the episodes. Tamsin was also in another weird sitcom set in a hospital, called Green Wing. And I hadn't noticed it, but yes, there is a similarity between Bill and Daniel!
"Green Wing" is a unique, goofy-charming hospital-based comedy featurung Tamsin Greig and Mark Heap (Jim in "Friday Night Dinner") it is similar style to the "The IT Crowd"and "Black Books". Available on "Absolute Jokes" YT channel. Would be another great series for you both to react to.
You can actually guess what Fran's weird object is early if you can read the katakana on the boxes, ライター = raitaa = lighter
This show just gets better and better when you learn the characters
It has a similar model as IT Crowd and Father Ted, where some episodes have a pretty consistent story and are enjoyable throughout, while other episodes are a little slow and convoluted for the first half because it's setting up something big for the second half.
Toast is good too.
Nathan Barley had the random style too.
This one can get fantastically dark. So many great episodes, the wine for the pope is a personal favourite of mine.
Dosn't that episode also have the "cleaner" in it too? i'ts been a while since I watched it.
The Jehovah's Witnesses sounded to me like Irish actors playing English. Bill Bailey was Sean Locke's best friend in comedy. They used to go on holidays together
Tasmin Greig (GREEG) which reminds me you must watch Green Wing - absolute genius series
Yes, yes, yes! NO one reacts to Green Wing - it's the Best!
The middle skinhead guy was also in Game of Thrones, he was Janos Slynt
I was first introduced to Black Books in 2004.
I was living in Spain and was lent the DVD.
I still find every episode hilarious, 20 years later!
Try Green Wing sometime. Tamsin is also in that and it’s bonkers.
So is the landlord from Plebs
And Jim
We all need to get a 'Green Wing' juggernaut of a campaign going, as no one seems to react to it. King and Queen Boomer could be the first YT Reactors to do it - be the first!
"Gordon Brittas's long suffering wife" Pippa Heywood and obviously a future Oscar winning Olivia Coleman...
Don't know if it was the same in the US, but The Little Book Of Calm was a huge thing around the turn of the Millennium. No idea why, but everyone seemed to have a copy of it.
When you google it now most of the results are about this episode of Black Books. I guess one of these things outlasted the other.
True, it was always one of the impulse buys at Waterstone's just as you're about to make your purchase at the tills, it costing £2.50 at that time is quite accurate too.
Tiny books in general were very in then
@@danielhewson4132 It wasn't that tiny, it's a bigger than the prop in the show.
Daniel’s face with Spencer’s hair
You should definitely watch derry girls, possibly the best show ive watched
ABOUT TIME 🤣 it’s also Dylan Moran pronounced More-An rather than more_annnnn I asked for this 20 times so I’m glad you gave in. Can’t wait for more
The christians who he invited in had slight Irish accents, and that's what you're hearing. I've noticed when Irish accents mix with English accents they sound slightly American sometimes.
I thought the guy sounded Welsh.
Me too 😂 @@heteroclitus
Taimsin should have been a Doctor Who.
Hurraaahhhhhhh! Let the hilarity commence. Great choice for a new series!
"Coupling" and "Black Books" are my favorite shows (not just "comedy"). something about british humor also: Pratchett for books
Bill Baiey is an excellent muscian too. lots of videos of him on yt.
Yes! Black books is amazing...enjoy!
Yes!
Love black books.
Now on to Garth Marenghi's Dark Place 😁👍
Beardy and baldy? I thought I was the only one! And yes, Darkplace for the next set of reactions, please
You and he were... buddies weren't you?
100% this !!!
Bill has always been one of my favourite musicians actors and comedians his goofy self deprecating comedy often hides just how talented he is. He sadly never got the fame he deserves because his comedy requires a level of intelligence and focus few people are interested in.
Omid Djalili was the perfect casting as a pimp in a later episode.
He hosts a game show on BBC1 now! 🤣
His desynced jaw laughter (I don't know how else to describe it) during the montage in that episode always sends me xD
I mean, this is a spoiler. This is revealed over the episode not known from the moment he appears, and the comedy comes with the reveal.
Unless he is far ahead recorded already, but I didn't think he was.
Dylan Moran was also in "Notting Hill" (the failed book thief...)
Newsflash! Not all religious door steppers are American
Not all American steppers are door religious.
The original religious door steppers were the Europeans who went to North America
This entire episode's Little Book of Calm stuff was a riff on the whole "calm" industry and how blinking useless platitude are. Bill Bailey is wonderful. So are Dylan and Tamsin (who is also seen in the series Episodes with Friends' actor Matt LeBlanc).
it is not about keeping the books. it is about finding ever more imaginative ways to fcuk with people who decide to enter his shop.
*who DARE to enter his shop
So excited for this! This was my favourite show for years.
One of the few comedy box sets i bought on DVD back in the day. Brilliant. Great two see you two watching this together🤩. It's a rare diamond
Lenahan appears in a lot of his series,in this he is a customer with an "I love books" T-shirt..look out for him
13:30 ....I think I know what she whispered to him 😆
He said CALM ! 😀
Hyped you are watching this, as with most series it gets better once it finds it's footing.
One of my go to series.
YAYYYYYY!!!! SO glad you’re doing this series! Thank you so much from sunny Cumbria 🙏😁🤗
Dylan Moran is great, enjoy !
Black Books? I'm on board!
One of the best things ever coming out of British TV.
Keep 'em coming!
Oh you are gonna love this series! Bernard Black is a great character, Bill Bailey is awesome too as is Tamsin Greg! But Dylan Moran steals it as Bernard, although all 3 are great foils for each other :D
YOU GUYS FINALLY DID IT 😁!! Man! I requested this with you on IG & you didn't ignore us! Fantastic!
Dylan Moran excellent comedian, vastly underated in UK. You should watch all his stand ups.
The observation about toddlers being just midget drunks..😂😂😂😂
I love Dylan Morans character. He’s brilliant 🤩. Bill Bailey does look a bit like Daniel
Goatee, that’s all.
This show was casted so perfectly, excited to see what you think
Omg yeah Daniel looks like Bill Bailey 😂 it's mainly the eyes!
Excellent, very happy you moved on to Black Books! The last sitcom of the Father Ted/IT Crowd lot is Count Arthur Strong, and fortunately it's fantastic.
i can't watch strong, too corny, i'd go back to big train.
OMG Black Books!!!! Finally. Black Books is great. Now you need to do Green Wing as well, also with Tamsin Grieg.
Yes, love green wing
Green wing is a delightful mess
@@Nicholas-fw1id if you have Audible - there are 6 eps of a reboot called GREEN WING RESUSCITATED which came out recently with the original cast and characters!
@@yzolakitchiI did not know that, but I'm working my way through the original again just now, so there's a treat to look forward to.
Definitely.
Not a weak element in that cast.
The middle skinhead is Janos Slint in Game of Thrones
I'm so glad you've gotten round to this. Happy days!
Bill Bailey was the Desk Sergeant in Hot Fuzz and a Stoner in Saving Grace (a movie about a elderly lady gardener who grows pot to supplement her income)
First time ever hearing about this series as a brit and I LOVE it and your reactions, thanks so much :) definitely watching them all. Much love & peace to you both
So excited to follow you guys through this series
YAAAS. So glad you are doing this show. You will love it!
Black Books lives near me, I've walked past him on a few different days recently
Black books is the name of the book shop which couldn't ever walk past you 🤷🏼♂️.
The character is called Bernard Black, and the actor is Dylan Moran, which is who I assume you mean
Dylan apparently lives somewhere in Edinburgh
Nice to see you finally discovering black books😂 great series
Should definately give Green Wing a go if you like the sound of Tamsin Greig (Jackie) in an incredibly fun and zany British hosptial show.
The little book of calm actually exists in real life.
king boomer getting round to the good uk stuff i see black books and had Jam on other day. u should try Spaced thats also very good
Yes to Spaced - and of course Green Wing! 🥰
I agree, Spaced is excellent, i think you'd definitely like it
Guys, I love you so much! Just finished my work and was thinking about you maybe watching another terrific British show. And here we are!
I am very much onboard for this. Possibly my favourite show ever. X
Finally!!! Happy days. Much love to you both. Can’t wait to watch this.
Btw. Moran is pronounced mor’un with the emphasis on Mor. Like talon.
Bailey's character in this one should be nicknamed 'motion sensor', as he only works when someone goes by.
Love this show. I watched one of the episodes being filmed, then saw Dylan doing live stand-up and Bill live.
Whoohoo! Soooo glad Black Books is up for reaction, its a wonderful series i found really addictive, another one of my favourite UK comedies 💖
Good to see you watching Black Books. Several other reactors have done this series too, so it will be fun to see what you both make of the show as it goes on, and what your highlights are.
For me, Bill Bailey is my favourite character but I've loved him from before this show, with his stand-up material, his TV series and his appearances on radio comedy shows. All worth checking out if you like his quirky humour and musical talents!
Apart from Martin Freeman, lots of other well-known faces from British comedy make guest appearances as the show goes on, like Rob Brydon, Johnny Vegas, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Olivia Colman, Kevin Eldon, Sam Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and writer Graham Linehan himself makes a cameo appearance too.
The face Bernard makes when Manny says he can have a pickle on his ham sandwich makes me laugh so hard
I've not watched black books for ages. Looking forward to watching it all again with the king and queen.
Lololol u do what I do I'm always watching stuff and going "that guys was in thrones" and I always recognise them. This guy's voice is unmistakable
25:33 That was a surprisingly good impression of Matt Berry!
I'm so happy you're watching this! Also that lighter realization "AAAAA!" gets me every time lol
If you miss Douglas, check out Toast of London. Or what we do in the shadows - even tho its set in USA I dont consider it an american comedy. Based on New Zealand movie of the same name its the Brain child of Taika Waitit (Thor Ragnarok) and Jermanie Clemment (one half of flight of the concords)
The set up episode. That's why you should re-visit Still Game; the pilot ep was far from great, just an intro to the characters really. Hope you do the Chris Morris trilogy too. The Day Today -- Brass Eye -- Jam. The Day Today is also a segue into Alan Partridge, starting with Knowing Me, Knowing You.
Hurray! Black Books! My Fave! My wife actually found and bought me a Little Book of Calm
Bernard black is the best funniest character in any show ever. Hands down the best comedy show ever written. Followed closely by Green Wing.
Love that you guys chose this series to do next. I have other suggestions for future BBC shows to check out later (like the IT Crowd, this show is fairly short, only 3 six episode seasons) - There's also Coupling (which has Jack Davenport who you might recognize from Pirates of the Caribbean) , Spaced (which was I believe the earliest collaboration of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick frost of Shaun of the Dead fame) and one of my personal truly deranged favorites, Green Wing, which is like a version of scrubs with the comedy turned way up and the health care basically turned OFF.
But in the meantime, looking forward to seeing how much you guys enjoy Black Books, which I admit when I first watched it I had NO idea what it was going to be about, which I kinda think is the right way to get into it.
Never watched black books when it was on, i like these actors and comedians, i think im gonna enjoy these
Bill Bailey is one of the greatest comedians ever to live
Episode 3 of Black Books is my favourite episode, I'm really looking forward to you guys getting to that one.
Finally got round to my bookshop owning spirit animal I see! Cracking!
This show is legendary! Glad your getting to see it together
Yaaaay.
You hero.
You started. 😂 👏🏻
Good call.
No point watching Father Ted and the IT Crowd, and then NOT watching Black Books.
I have - no exaggeration at all - watched every episode of Black Books at least 40 or 50 times. One of my all time favourite things.
Half of the things I say are Black Books quotes. Thats not far off not being an exaggeration too.
I was honestly just about to recommend this to you. I genuinely cannot wait until your reaction to episode 3. It’s unequivocally one of the finest moments in British comedy history!
*edited* I meant episode three!!
Brilliant this is such a funny program and I actually recommend this over a month ago 👏😀
