I also tried to contact Sony on twitter but no response... I checked with an old blu-ray I had and the old blu-ray was correct. The 'few seconds of footage repeated' fault has been an issues with a few 4K releases recently - I know that The Beatles A Hard Days Night Criterion 4HK was briefly recalled for the same issue. I wonder if the mistake is created at a stage of the manufacturing process or by human error?
Both movies got scanned from the OCNs. A Hard Day’s Night was a digital error that occurred when they were editing the restored footage together to create the finished transfer, whereas the error on 12 Monkeys was actually in the negative, that error is physically present in the negative. How exactly that kind of error occurs is a mystery to me.

I certainly agree that people are blowing the video issue out of proportion. It's gone what, 4 years since the bluray and nobody noticed the issue until now? It's incredibly insignificant and sounds like they had no way of knowing as it was somehow edited that way on the camera negative they scanned. How it happened is strange, but if you look up the side by side comparison barely anyone would notice.
The glitch in the first Blu-ray release of Matrix Revolutions was lesser than this and yet people were outraged and of course Warner Bros. issued a replacement program, I did get my replacement disc.
Seriously curious if most of the people complaining about the edit mistake if no one had pointed it out. Four years of no one catching it and the director approved so I'm not sure what people were expecting Arrow to do - the source material they received apparently matches the edit exactly

After watching this video last night I put in my 4K disc and looked at the film from just before 41 minutes onwards. There does appear to be repeated shots of Cole and two of the scientists, but the audio seems to match the shots as It cuts to Cole when he speaks. I can certainly see how this could’ve been missed when they were remastering the Blu-ray four years ago. The question is, will it be worth returning the disc for a replacement?

About half the time I disable the HDR on my player and play 4K discs through my Epson projector using the same color mode I use for 1080p. To my taste HDR looks off as often as it looks spot on. Turning it off allows me to appreciate the 4K upgrade on my 115” screen without dealing with the HDR ping ponging.
What is it with Arrow 4k releases! I bought Donnie Darko last month and it still has issues with the Theactrical version first reported over 10 months ago. What makes it worse is that they refused to replace the disc with their replacement program as I didn’t buy the collectors edition. Poor customer service!
So many questions to ask your self after watching this movie. Did he go to study or did he give the idea to start the 12 monkey's. Watch in on laserdisc
Just on the 4K for the first film; all the others look like they have previously and the blu-rays have the original look. Lionsgate released a 4K of the proper colors but no original audio only new mixes. He also liked the lord of the rings trilogy in 4K which is also worse when it comes to changing the color of scenes and whole sections of the films. If you’re looking for something that matches the original theatrical experience I’d buy the laserdisc it looks very rough like how Indiana Jones use to look before it became Disney clear and redited for less scary scenes.
Shout! anticipated that, and put a 1080p Blu-ray in there with the original color timing. A 4K Blu-ray would’ve been nice, but it’s not an awful release without one. I don’t think either color timing was right in my opinion, even though Dean Cundey approved both of them.
As for The Lord Of The Rings and Indiana Jones, they had cleaned-up effects and altered color timing, so I steered clear of them. I haven’t heard the soundtracks on Indiana Jones yet, but I know the soundtracks on LOTR are stunners, with the battle in The Return Of The King being one of the greatest Atmos/DTS:X scenes ever, if not the best ever. I’d rip my arm off and best myself with it for the old picture transfers, with the new Atmos tracks (which are not edited, unlike the picture), both cuts of all movies, and every special feature ever all in the same box. That would be an instant sale for me.
@@TackJorrance I’d buy now when cheap, got my copy for $15, and just have arrow ship you a replacement disc; When these get back on shelves it will be months before you get a decent price and than it might not have the booklet of slipcover if you care about those.
Arrow mistake is really disappointing, especially when people pay extra$ to upgrade to it! Glad I didn't dispose of my Universal Blu-ray (even though it was encoded in inferior VC-1). I compared the 2 Blu-ray and yes, at 40:52 mark, footage of 3 doctors interrogating Bruce Willis appeared twice (including the 12 monkeys logo). Universal Blu-ray didn't have such problem. The same kind of problem happened to Warner Bros. Victor/Victoria Blu-ray a few years ago. Warner Bros. did a fantastic job of sending me a replacement (I'm from Singapore). I don't think it will happen for Arrow. Glad I didn't upgrade to 4K Blu-ray - even after they correct it!
I never watched this movie before yet but honestly specifically the blown out scenes they are not intentional. Nobody in their right mind would intentionally overblown so amateurly for cinema grading. It looks exactly as either poor transfer to home formats or just lack of expertise to balance and optimize high grade recordings to the home formats and quite possibly as some mentioned the formats were pretty lacking in order to retain such scenes. It just doesn't look right for the cinematographic level and HDR definitely corrects, doesn't fix but corrects as it still looks quite overblown.
Terry Gilliam did intentionally alter many scenes like this. It was intentionally blown out as a flashback sequence. The question is whether it not it was intended to come across as bright as it did.

Arrow have made multiple errors across many of their releases and they don't care. Their QC is terrible. They've barely fixed any of their issues. I think Donnie Darko was one of the few times.

@@JeffRauseo Is this possibly a player issue, switching from the first layer to the second layer? The laser has to move back to the center, and it takes a second. Maybe some machines don't have enough buffer memory to change layers seamlessly on every 4K disc. Or maybe there's something unusual about the disc that forces the machine to take longer to lock onto the second layer, and the buffer runs out.
The error was physically present on the negative, which is the source used here. All I can imagine is that it was around the reel change, and for whatever reason the same footage is at the end of R2 and the beginning of R3. Reels are roughly 20 minutes, so 41 minutes would put it right at the reel change. Either way, this is a large and embarrassing problem for Arrow. They now have millions of customers on both sides of the Atlantic to answer to. Guaranteed some people are going to lose their jobs over this.
If you can give jaws a positive review on 4K you can give this a positive review lol Compared to the laserdisc this is an breathtaking upgrade. The flashback scenes were always more blown out on the universal blu-ray more than what they were in theaters or laserdisc/vhs so I’m fine with my laserdisc and 4K now for this not so minor issue, that is ridiculous! Fan or not, no film needs to have an error like this allowed especially on a previous release that’s been rereleased multiple times is completely ridiculous to say is ok to have allowed to have happened. All you need to do was buy a laserdisc, dvd or vhs copy to compare the new transfer to especially if the film print is what had this error or due to a miss alignment of the scan. Lazy work brew error riddled results. Universal also has been the ones to have done all the transfers for this film; arrow only did the HDR grades and looked over the audio to make sure noise, static & pops/hiss were removed while not affecting the mixes integrity. It’s to the usual universal standard of 4K transfers but it’s a shame no one saw the error til now. Arrow unlike shout factory with their Halloween 4ks will actually fix their issues made.
Well yeah it is great compared to all other releases. I mentioned that in the review. It’s not a huge difference between this and the Arrow 1080p release. And Jaws is an excellent 4K
@@JeffRauseo that jaws 4K is riddled with digital alterations and done at what was the start of 4K but meant for HD aka blu-rays. The transfer isn’t up too 4k standards and it shows on that 4K disc. The transfer is visibly lower quality as compared to the evil dead or even pet semtary which both digitally edited their films the same as jaws with infinitely better results that actually look naturally blended in the film. The uss Indianapolis scene is horribly retouched and the lighting is just nonsense due to the alterations; the cover up of Robert at the beginning of the evil dead looks about the same. The grain isn’t uniform, you have slight smearing & the lighting looking like spy kids 3D are all dead give aways for both films that things were altered. If jaws is an excellent 4K than I’m Mickey Mouse 😂 I will give universal credit for the opening of jaws as the multiple wire/ rope removals are done extremely well but like I said with the other instances of this new construction of jaws added a lot of new problems the film never had. When you factor in this was the master they used for the blu-ray of jaws you understand why the work was allowed to be finished at such quality since the resolution wasn’t going to see all these edits blown up to full 4K clarity, but alas when they did the new hdr grades they didn’t tweak the transfer for it to be true 4K ready like arrow does for their 4K releases of old blu-ray masters. The dvd when compared to the 4K is obviously less clear but the authentic look you get that the 4K butchers is enough for me to use it only has the glorified bonus features disc it is. At least the mono audio sounds nice in 4K but if you want the best sounding release the laserdisc is the only way to go.
As for Jaws, my only gripe with that otherwise amazing 4K was how they fixed some of the colors, for instance one scene in the boat where the light outside changes from day to night and back again several times in one conversation. That admittedly did irritate me, but otherwise it was a damn good disc. As for the Shout! Factory Halloween discs, what errors are on them? I haven’t noticed anything wrong with them.
Terry Gilliam has such a unique filmography. Always an experience.

Reels are roughly 20 minutes, so 41 minutes would put it right at the reel change. Either way, this is a large and embarrassing problem for Arrow. They now have millions of customers on both sides of the Atlantic to answer to. Guaranteed some people are going to lose their jobs over this.
If you can give jaws a positive review on 4K you can give this a positive review lol
Compared to the laserdisc this is an breathtaking upgrade.
If jaws is an excellent 4K than I’m Mickey Mouse 😂
I will give universal credit for the opening of jaws as the multiple wire/ rope removals are done extremely well but like I said with the other instances of this new construction of jaws added a lot of new problems the film never had.
@@Thecatdrums3 What utter rubbish.
Not like Arrow :( they usually hit the spot every time!!! not that I care that much in this one, I think the movie is shit anyway 😂
Maybe I'm crazy but with the side by side of the Universal Blu-Ray and 4k, I preferred the Blu-Ray every single time.
