In the 1970s I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home (parents had split up, mother had custody of us kids. She was a mentally ill, abusive monster). As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery. The Carol Burnett show was one of many tv shows I watched regularly in daily syndicated reruns. More than just entertained me, it really helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed happiness, laughter and joy in an otherwise joyless existence. The Carol Burnett show was the one and only tv show whose sketches had me and my sister literally rolling on the floor, clutching our sides with laughter (especially if the sketch had Tim Conway in it. He was the best). EXCEPT for these "The Family" sketches. When Eunice yelled and/or scrunched up her face in anger, she was the exact spitting image of our mother. It was just too painful. The part where Eunice screams at Mama over the peppermill is all too familiar to me. Countless times at the drop of a hat, Mother unjustifiably screamed at the top of her lungs at us kids over various inanimate objects in our place, practically on a daily basis. My sister and I would sit completely stone faced through these "Family" sketches. I don't recall them eliciting a single laugh from either one of us (not even the occasional presence of Tim Conway helped).
I never saw this one. 😅 I love it when Eunice tells Ed something and really means it and he backs right down. Like when he says he doesn’t want to pay for Mama’s dinner. These sketches are a very different kind of comedy than I Love Lucy, but just as memorable.
So-called sister and my father were the drama queens in my family. Certain friends didn't know how to act in a restaurant setting. Glad those days are over! LOL
When I was a little girl, watching these with my parents as they originally aired, I thought these skits were so funny. Now, as a middle-aged woman, I see how multi-layered they were.
This has a LOT of extra footage I never saw. It's unbelievable how much is cut out of sitcoms or skits like this, just to get more commercials in! FIVE minutes of this was cut for years in syndicated reruns!!
Absolutely! This version is a million times better than the cut version and it answered so many loose ends that the cut version had. Most times, they should leave the deleted scenes in!!
Thank you! I have been wanting to see the unedited clip of this for years! My Mom always got the biggest kick out of Eunice and she got really tickled when Mama pulled the toilet paper out of her purse! 😂😂 My Mom had the most beautiful laugh and these skits always kept her laughing!
Wonderful! Always great to watch a misadventure with The Family. Poor Eunice gets a taste of sophistication here, only to be thrown out. I am subscribing. Maybe we will see the rare Eunice sketch entitled _Overnight Guest_ (S11 E04). That'd be good. Thanks much!
@@Mister_Listener No, I don't mean that one. That isn't "Overnight Guest", that's the "Visit from Dan" sketch with Dick (and also featuring Tim Conway as Mickey). Dick plays an old pal of Ed's who drops by out of the blue at the house but Ed isn't home, then Ed phones Eunice there from the airport and breaks up the marriage over the phone; he left her for another woman. Dick Van Dyke basically replaced Harvey Korman in season 11 on Carol's show in the last season they made, if I'm not mistaken. The one I'm eager to watch is the sketch that aired between Dan's visit and the Password game sketch (the latter being notorious for Tim's "siamese elephants" story/ routine and the blooper). The rare one, "Overnight Guest", apparently involves Mama dropping in on a newly divorced Eunice. I have not seen that skit anywhere on the web.
Laughing out loud moment 10:15, “L’chayim,” as if redneck Ed would ever know that word! Carol is momentarily nonplused, but she rolls with it. Vicki looks like she’s about to burst out laughing.
Oh, that one. I feel like there's dark fic out there somewhere in which Eunice finally snaps and "does something" about Mama following that debacle. It's a good one.
Wow, I used to record the 'family' sketches on my cassette recorder when they originally aired, I KNOW I never heard/saw this whole version. I've always wondered if Mama went up to that lady beforehand and asked her what she had on her plate, and what she said after tasting the Pink Lady. That's a LOT of footage that was cut out - 13 clips equaling about 4.4 minutes edited out. THANKS!!
I did that too and memorized most of them :) I think these were the best bits the Carol Burnett show ever did. More than sketch comedy, these are superb one-act plays.
@@LannieLord Lots of her skits like Mrs. Wiggins, Eunice, and a couple others I recorded, theme songs like C.H.I.P.'S, Three's Company, Electro Woman and Dyna Girl, and movies like Earthquake.
@@LannieLord I still have my cassette recorder and all of my cassette tapes. I do not care about what everyone else is doing or buying I refuse to get rid of my memories.
I completely agree. I have never seen the full version of this skit before and this full version is a million times better. The cut version removed so much context; I always wondered why that "Chocolate Mousse" lady was so rude to mama, what went on when they were fighting over who sits on the outside, or why mama seemed to be in the bathroom for such a brief amount of time. The cut version seems very choppy. This episode is an absolute gem!
She'd never get the chance. Ellen would never deign to dine out with Mama. Never invites Mama to her fancy parties, either. Mean, selfish Mama raised a mean, selfish daughter.
@@sistagirllondon Now that I think about it, I can picture Ellen and her "pipsqueak husband" sitting in a booth off-camera, pointedly ignoring Eunice and the others. Just waiting for them to be removed. lol
Mama wasn't looking into a mirror with Ellen like she was with Eunice... besides Ellen had been trying to escape the dysfunction as soon as it was legal to 😂
They way I remember it; after Eunice said a few choice words about the violin player, I could have sworn that Mama put a quarter in the violin before they were kicked out of the restaurant.
Poor Eunice. For once in her life she was going to enjoy having a nice dinner in an upscale restaurant. Now it's back home to her kitchen fixing meals for Ed when he comes home everyday.
But actually Eunice is the one who got them kicked out. If she had just relaxed and stopped worrying about how Thelma and Ed were acting she could have enjoyed a nice meal.

I am sorry you went through that.
The pepper grinder bit has stuck with me for years. Lol.
The look on Eunice's face as the family leaves is a master study in acting.
Also the look on her face when they first walk in. She’s so awkward and intimidated. I feel her.
Foiled again…
I've been watching this for years and never have seen the original version. Thank you so much for uploading 😊
@kelleylitchford687 Me too, a LOT was cut out for TV reruns!
I'm glad you are posting better versions of these. The Family sketches are like great songs. You can watch them over and over!
They were so realistic!! So talented!! Priceless 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️

Reminds me of every single family dinner I ever had growing up 😂😂😂
Yes…
LOL!! Same level of drama, just different dynamics.

No show like this one. Hilarious 🤣 Pure entertainment with these 3
Eunice's looking back wistfully is a painful reminder the difficulty overcoming environment.
Saturday nights CBS , mom would let us stay up to watch 😢 memories.

I do agree with you. Ed and Mama were enough to get on any persons nerves.
I love Eunice but she was part of the problem that night.

Masterful.
At least at Fat Jack's they got pictures on the menu
Hamburger and fries!! Eunice screaming and singing!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sooooooo very close to my Mother's Family that it's scary

They way I remember it; after Eunice said a few choice words about the violin player, I could have sworn that Mama put a quarter in the violin before they were kicked out of the restaurant.
That was on a Mama's Family episode. The one where Vint won a free dinner for four to a fancy restaurant and he took Mama and Fran and Naomi.

To be fair Ellen would know how to act in a fancy restaurant
Ellen always thought Eunices family was low class and she did not really want to deal with them.
Somehow I always felt a bit sorry for Unice. Her dreams never seemed to work out.
Who was the lady that spoke to Thelma about the trout fillet?
😮! Filet of Sole Almondine
