Speaking as a life long Godzilla fan, I hated this movie BUT I liked this scene. THIS captured the mystique and godlike quality of Godzilla better than anything else they did in the movie.
+NYG4LIFE123 My parents had this movie in Betamax and I watched it several times when I was a little kid. This is literally the only scene I recall from it. Kind of weird.
+NYG4LIFE123 Honestly I'd have to say that this movie isn't as bad as people say but rather "So Bad, It's Good". Besides I still say that no matter what people think of the movie they've got to admit that the cartoon based off it was pretty darn awesome. And I'm talking about "Godzilla: The Series (1998-2000)" by the way not the Godzilla animated series from 1978-79.
🤣🤣🤣 20 plus years from me. And I'm here because my gf let out a huge fart while sitting on the pot that I heard and I was like, was that godzilla? And this old man is how I now say godzilla 🐲 🍻🤘🏻
Haha same, I’ll randomly say this to myself and I don’t think I’ve watched this movie since the first time I watched when it came out years ago. Clearly the only scene that stuck with me...
The way i like to see this scene is as a case of misidentification. They saw a giant creature that obviously wasn't actually Godzilla, but they already seem to know about him. That means that the true Godzilla was still out there...
So that makes this movie unofficially part of the monsterverse and Zilla was just an iguana mutated by a combination of radiation and exposure to Godzilla's DNA in the attempts to kill Gojira in the 50's. It would also possibly explain why Zilla Jr. seemed to have more of Godzilla's abilities and personality then his mother/father did.
At the very least, GMK makes use of this by saying the events of '54 was mostly covered up (minus the rumors and rumblings of those who refused to forget about the attacks.) and that '98 happened afterwards.
I like Phillipe's expression as the man answers. Increasing concern as if recognized the name. If recognized, it means not so much that Gojira exists, but that he realizes this man a colossal creatures he believes was the legend. That's not good news either way.
The first part of the movie had so much promise as being a cool Godzilla movie. They made Godzilla out to be an ominous force who's destroying ships and is actually kind of creepy. Then they had him chase a taxi for the climax and get shot down by missiles.
considering toho made this movie Canon; in GMK they said that the Americans reported zilla to be Godzilla, while Japan said no it wasn't Godzilla; also GMK was a sequel to the original gojira movie. Combine these three movies, which means the old man must have been in Japan when he was younger during Godzilla's first attack in 1954, after Godzilla was killed by the oxygen destroyer cut to 1998 where he worked on that ship when zilla attacked the ship; the old man must have mistaken zilla to be Godzilla coming back for revenge after 1954, only for the real Godzilla to come back in gmk
Maybe...but I always thought of the real Godzilla attacking the ship the old man was in just that Zilla attacked NY. However that is a good point you made.
The Godzilla canon is NOT A MESS. If the Godzilla movie is made by the Japanese (Toho) Its canon. If it's made by an American movie co. it is not...period. Just like the 2 Japanese King Kong movies are not canon because Kong is an American creation.
Richard The Lionheart no they have different canons the showa is the only era that's messy. All the classics like Gojira and the other monster introductory films were very solid and after Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster the lore wasn't exactly messy but just not as tightly knit with the original and it's understandable that those later movies would seem to stand on their own because TOHO wanted the more child friendly movies to be distanced from the darker origins of the character. The Heisei era were all connected and was a sequel to the 1954 Goji and the millenial era was like an anthology but each film on its own was a sequel to 1954. In this instance what he said was true. 1954, 1998 and gmk are canon with eachother
mecha gojira69 so you don’t consider the Monsterverse Godzilla movies canon, even though Toho is letting America having the rights for Godzilla which makes those Godzilla movies canon, just because another country did it differently than the ones who gave them the rights, doesn’t mean it is not canon, that is stupid logic, the other Kong movies made by Toho are also canon, its still King Kong movie since Toho bought the rights to Kong to use him in other movies, your logic is literally dumb.
Because it was called Godzilla and the Godzilla that we got in the movie is nothing like the Godzilla that had been established for the 40+ years prior to this movie (and the sentiment does have validity when you actually look into Godzilla, his character and his overall history).
Because this movie deviated so far from the core of Godzilla itself that it doesn't even resemble its titular character-- it's a completely different monster that just happens to have the same name.
The guy in charge of this movie was an absolute ahole. As much as i want to like this movie more than it deserves, people behind it didn't enjoy working on it and it shows. Just look at videos of the making, they really had much better ideas even at the eyes of TOHO but Roland Emmerich ruined it. (Holy sh*t the comment is 11 years old)
This was one of the BEST scenes from this film. From listening to how the Japanese survivor utters the monsters' name, and the look on his face, you can tell that he is GENUINELY TRAUMATIZED. I would be too if a giant, radioactively-mutated marine iguana sank the ship I was on and killed almost the whole crew.
Brayant Martinez Dude, I've heard enough 'Zilla's not Godzilla' explanations from other Godzilla fans to last me a thousand lifetimes. It's seriously getting old for me already. But it's nice to know you like Zilla. He was always one of my favorites.

So I'm leaving this conversation here for now.
I wish they'd gone more into the fact that the Japanese in this universe seemed to have encountered the actual Godzilla and this fisherman was mistaking Zilla for the Big G.
The only good thing about this movie was probably this scene, which was still odd since it hardly makes sense, and the cg used to make Godzilla, which was only impressive for a good 1 or 2 scenes, and that's for 1998. The idea of the eggs was alright, but they fucked that up 110%
