WOW WOW WOW....Now I get all the hype behind this one! Thanks so much for watching. I wonder how different the Pompeii version is? Guess I'm about to find out! I'm interested to hear what specific journey this song takes you on. Let me know below. At the moment I'm seeing the funky section as a "Welcome to hell" party of vices and indulgences...then I'm forced out the back door into the chilling reality of it all, left all alone to wander amongst the wailing souls, begging for salvation as I do the same...before luckily being whisked away to the next place...😬 😂 🥰

David Gilmour is lead guitar and co main vocalist of Pink Floyd from 67-ish forward through to the present. (They never officially disbanded). All of their classic albums through the 70s features David Gilmour's legendary guitar and iconic voice. The Pompeii live version of this is great, but if you really like that last section, I would highly recommend 'Echoes live in Gdansk' version performed in 2006 in its entirety with Gilmour and Wright - the keyboardist and co-vocalist with Gilmour here. The emotion brought to bare after all those years is amazing. Especially the extended end part where the guitar and keyboard are truly speaking to each other. The fact that this would be one of Richard Wright's last performances of the piece before his death a couple of years later, makes it all the more heart-wrenching.

I've never seen a reaction video where I could see the tears running down someone's (your) face, it was incredible moving. There are very many great bands and artists out there, but I think, in the annals of time, there will not have ever been a band quite like Floyd. If the world as we know it ends, I hope a recording of Pink Floyd's music would be included in the time capsule to ullustrate what the human race was capable of, if only it could have overcome its more destructive tendencies...

Echoes was my first introduction to Pink Floyd, the year this Album (Meddle), came out, in 1971.

Helene here. You mentioned Suppers Ready and if it’s similar. No. Prog bands like Genesis and Yes have some incredible pieces…but very honestly, there is nothing else in music, to my knowledge, that is anything like Pink Floyd’s work. They are, to me, their own genre. Most people I’ve interacted with on reaction channels agree. They are deep, often dark, sometimes ethereal, sometimes intense……but to me, it speaks to my heart and I FEEL it in my soul. Bands like Genesis and Yes……I appreciate it with my mind. Big difference. I know others think differently.
Other music that makes me feel somewhat like this are some tracks from Massive Attack, some Zeppelin tracks…Alvin Lee’s Bluest Blue….anything that is hypnotic and mesmerizing.
I think You would love trip-hop genre because it often has a dark vibe..and very hypnotic.

Hi Helene, going to point out 2 comparible pieces sort of at around the same level as Echos.
1st - "Bett'r Days" - an independant tribute to Syd Barrett, the missing PF band member, which "could" have dropped in the same timeframe as Meddle or Dark Side - by Radio Masscare International from the album Rain Falls in Grey. There is a short version onYT but the full version is (I forget!) about 40 mins??
2nd - Porcupine Tree's "Sky Moves Sideways" double album.
Both of these need a peaceful room, headphones, your time and are very rewarding. But are they PF clones? Nope; very creative original works with a similar sonic pallet (and aware of what PF have done).
Could have mentioned Osric Tentacles "Spirals in Hyperspace" too...
Hope you find some time to listen and enjoy!

The song Started with Richard Wright sitting at his organ and running one Keynote backwards through Leslie speaker and it came out sounding like a sonar ping and everyone in the band kind of perked up when they heard that and it was the start of this song. Over time they would work on bits and pieces of music and attach it to previous pieces and they ended up with what they originally called 26 pieces of nothing. Then they sat down and put this song together through those 26 pieces and it became echoes. My kids buy me these old fashioned things called "books" and they've bought me numerous ones about Pink Floyd which is where I get this information.

    • @ScottyKirk1
      @ScottyKirk1 Год назад

I think the "backwards" of the story was the middle section of Dave's guitar getting the seagull (or whale if you prefer) sounds by running his guitar thru a wah wah pedal backwards. Running the organ thru the Leslie just had a resonance when Rick hit that one particular note. So they decided to make the ping the opening note of the entire song. Dave said it was pure accident, as the Leslie didn't vibrate like that on any other note. Man I would sure love to hear all of the "Nothing" demos they did to create each section! That would be a treat.

You should watch the Echoes video sync with the end part of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a big thing around the time of the Wizard of Oz sync with DSOTM. It is an incredible sync that even caused people to beleive it was intentional bcuz it is EXACTLY the same length as that section of the movie! And it is a trip and a half to say the least... Also further speculation was that the original lyrics were "Planets meeting face to face" instead of "Overhead the albatross". There are a few early live versions with the other lyrics. If memory serves the Berlin live 1971 has those lyrics.

I want to second what a commenter said about the whole Meddle album being what I also consider their best. And the second song on the album, 'A Pillow of Winds' affects me as much as this song, just differently- different frequency.
    More sublime and serene.

You must, MUST react to “Echoes, Live at Pompeii.” Live, yes, but to an empty colosseum. As great as this version you reacted to here is, it pales in comparison. Just the 4 Dudes, big speakers and the ghosts, and Nick Mason’s god-like drumming. You must!👍

Listen to David Gilmour and friends performing this live in Gdansk. it was the last time he and Richard Wright played it before Richard passed away. David will never play it again out of respect for his friend. It makes trending call and response between guitar and keyboard even more sad than it already was.

I love how the 'spooky' breakdown is so open to interpretation. Some people visualize a trip through the cosmos, others feel trapped in a nightmare hellscape, and yet others feel like they're floating serenely in the twilight zone of an ocean. While the song's opening lyrics and album cover art, and the fact that the band themselves often referred to it as "the whale section" points to some specific intentionality, they were always careful to encourage the listener to take what they will/need from their music.

If you happen to have seen the Jennifer Lopez movie The Cell, that part reminds me of the scene where Vince Vaughn's character wakes up in the serial killer's warped mind. I guess you did!! The night just got better. Thanks man. Off to listen...to an old fave. Ping!
Ping! You will get to see Dave making his guitar scream and Roger make his bass go thump when you catch Pompeii, which I saw in Charlotte at a Drive-in theatre in the '70s. Believe you me...it sounds way better on headphone. I had the album when it came out, and was in high school. I played it for all the house to hear and never got complaints. Mom even became a fan of Dark Side. Ummagumma I had to play in my room, as it was tres outre.

Boy did I! OMG they played it on a big screen? That must have been amazing! I'm a little confused...is Pompeii this full version plus additional section? Because the full video I found of Pompeii on RUclips seems about the same length as the original song...So I'm assuming you vote that I react to the entire Meddle?..Thanks so much for watching!

@Retro Reactions - the Pompeii '72 version is what you just heard but split into two halves to bookend the film. I think they felt it read better that way rather than close the film with something not tied to the start of it. Either way, doing both halves us a must. Also, as you should with every Pink Floyd album, do the them in their entirety. Even the ones that aren't necessarily a concept album. Loving these reactions, man! Keep 'em coming!

To me, The beginning lyrics refer to the unity of humankind….if he should exchange a glance with a stranger on the street…and he could see that “he was me”….they were the same. I’m paraphrasing of course…..but read those first lyrics again from that perspective and see if it fits for you.

I strongly recommend that you try as well Echoes performed by David Gilmour at Gdansk. It was the last time that song was played as Richard Wright passed away some time after that last performance. That version has a moment when Gilmour and Wright go into a dialoge through their instruments that is so intense and unique that os even more special knowing that Wright will die soon.

That section where you said they were pulling on your soul? I’ve always heard that as whale song…which echoes through the ocean. They sing of “coral caves” and how everything is “aquamarine”…and sing of the “albatross hanging motionless in the air”….so to me, this takes place under the surface of the ocean….and these are sounds you would hear there. Others hear it as outer space ……..or inner space. Best stoner music ever. ✌️

Helene here Brandon…have you ever delved into the band Low? Look them up. Experimental…dark….pushing the boundary between genius and acoustic chaos. Where does that boundary lay? To each listener, it’s different. Pretty unknown band, although they got some traction in Britain. Won’t help your channel stats, but you might like them for yourself. Check out the song Tonight, The Monkey Dies.
